Dark clouds gathered in large billowing masses to blot out the sky overhead the northern Kou region of Kanshou. Almost as if man were mimicking nature, soldiers also gathered in droves, forces from both sides of the war mustering manpower from all across the country. There were rumors flying about that this battle was to be a decisive one that would determine the fate of Kou. Very few among them knew the real reason behind such a large clash of forces after several months of either side limiting their fights to smaller skirmishes. A new development brought forth the potential to end this civil conflagration in a single swoop. Of course, the true intentions of commanding officers rarely reached the ears of the common soldier. Only the rallying battle cries from their direct superiors meant to lead and encourage them to face their deaths with pride and honor.

Several generals and their armies had begun to aggregate in the region for the past week now, their forces spreading out across the mountainous landscape focusing around four major points which were sure to become the locations of four massive battles. It was almost as if everything up til now had merely been phantom whispers of a true war, but now the storm of bloodshed that had been building up all the while was finally ready to be unleashed all at once. Entire forts and farmlands to the south had been abandoned by the troops guarding them all for the sake of bringing the most power to bear possible here in Kanshou. This particular battlefield out of the four would be vitally important however and so the most soldiers from either army were headed here.

[ToM] The Third Battle 8rtwAa9

Past the vast valley and between the mountains is a deep ravine. The terrain is rough and shards of earth stick out from the massive walls that surround it. A shallow, swampy river flows down the endless path. Bright moss covers the rocks, bleeding into the waters below. Vines drape across like tangled ropes, twisting downwards. Trees grow within the mountain side and entwine their thick roots within the rocks and down into the water. The air is thick with moisture and hazed over in a fog. Within it's many crevices lies an abundance of hidden caverns and hiding spots. It is a perfect place for guerilla warfare.

There are small military camps held by forces of Gao Yuan Zu set up between the various natural blockades that the ravine provides. At the beginning of the ravine lies a mass of forces allied to Yoshiro Zu. Their camps rest along the outside, preparing to take siege on the inner channel. Due to the recent surges in the young emperor's popularity, his soliders slightly outnumber those hidden in the ravine. The storming clouds up overhead were beginning to rumble with peals of thunder as if the rain and lightning could sense the growing tension between the two sides below. Soon a terrible fight would take place here and soak the land in the blood of its own people…

The battle will begin after three rounds of posting, during that time, the NPC leaders of each side will be introduced, player locations on the battlefield will be established, and the battle plan will be laid out. Please use your first posts to show how your characters prepared before the battle and end your posts with them just arriving at their respective sides forces.

Remember, you must post within 48 hours of Solomon's Proxy. This round is due by August 19th, 11:59 PM EST.

If anything could truly be said about the path that Lagi has taken, it has been completely based on following the will of his heirloom. The Rukh compass only spun occasionally, and only with reason. With the direction that it pointed at, it played a significant part in Lagi's future and fate. At this point, what was the fate of a criminal that had nothing more than revenge on the mind?

"I shouldn't be too far now...."

Getting a good "Hand" on heliohapt wasn't necessarily enough for Lagi,  they still had yet to give the country a good squeeze in order put them in an unbearable choke-hold that was supposed to shake the foundation of their livelihood. That was the fate of those who chose to use slavery as a means to help the country progress,  it was nothing more than a boiling kettle that was waiting to topple over at a moments notice. However, was it within his right to bring it upon himself to punish them? Was the entire country at fault for the transgressions that the country seemed to be involved in when the alchemists harassed his family and his people during his rule?

"Oh, I actually heard about the problems that Kou was having. A war of some kind, that bastard managed to bring himself back to life somehow. "

Lagi shrugged it off, he knew the young King of Kou personally. He was a man of integrity and justice, using that time during the insurgence to rip the command of Kou out of the clutches of his father. Lagi thought that the country would be better for it, unlike him, Yoshiro was a true heir.  With the many names  Lagi bore, the Dragon Emperor, the rogue hero of Reim, it's a shame that his current transition was that of a finger of the Dark Hand.   Either way, Lagi wished to maintain the alliance of the Reim empire and Kou, even if it meant giving Yoshiro a hand in secret.

"Jynx...... we might be closer...."

A feminine voice graced Lagi's ears, it was none other than Orie's. His eternal companion broke Lagi's concentration for a brief moment, allowing him to refocus. "Be on your guard Orie, even the greatest beast master in the world could lose his life in a place like this."

The one thing about the world that Lagi liked was that all things were possible. Even the end of gods was possible,  a possibility that was less of a constant than his own.  Arriving at the beginning of the ravine, along with a new face and set of Dark Hand tattoos, Lagi would look as if he was nothing more than one of the hired mercenaries on Yoshiro's side. He was inconspicuous and quiet, bearing no desire to showcase what he could truly do unless he absolutely had to.

Vardreth

Vardreth

Vadreth sat upon his horse's back, at the center of his troops formation. His elite guard, forces from his family's mercenary company, were in his immediate vicinity. The rest of the troops, which were hired after he took on the job from Emperor Gao Yuan Zu, were arranged in an orderly fashion. Very few of the troops had mounts with them, considering the location they were about to be buckling down in was not a very ideal place for such movement. Even so it paid to bring them along, if for nothing else than to use as scouts during the travel there.

Already Vardreth's mounted scouts had encountered several skirmishes during their trips out.

With their deligence and the intelligence they brought back, Vardreth was able to steer clear of most of the combat. His plan was to conserve his forces until they reached the terrain that was favorable for them; a fortress created by nature. With caverns, trees and winding passages it created a difficult terrain to fight within. With Vardreth's allies having set up camp first and seizing the location, he knew they would have a favorable setup for the battle.

The procession of soldiers moved in a practiced manner, and while they seemed to walk casually their strides were in step with one another. Vardreth was not idle during this march. He slowly moved his way towards the back where a supply caravan was following in tow. There were jerkies and grain to last them a few days, rations that may be needed depending on the upcoming battle. Dismounting from his horse, Vardreth stepped into one of the caravan's carriages. The interior was lined with a number of crates that were black, white and red. The scent of nature was particularly strong within the enclosed area, with a focus on something bitter. An old man was fiddling with a cauldron and a number of herbs, but looked up when he heard a disturbance. His face brightened up when he saw it was Vardreth that entered.

"Fang, good, good. Here to learn more then?" During the trip, Vardreth spent some time of each day continuing to learn the trade of an alchemist. Poisons, healing salves and stimulants were all topics that were covered by the tutoring.

Shaking his head, Vardreth refuted this. "Old man Xiang Li, I'm just here to prepare. I need that batch we worked on the other day." Vardreth pointed to one of the boxes that were painted black.

Xiang Li grunted dispiritedly; his focus was ever on alchemy itself, and nothing else.

Vardreth pulled the box out and began taking each individual bottle and coating all of his weapons. It was a crate of the tactical venom. Vardreth carefully put away the weapons and grabbed the remaining vials, storing them within his voluminous clothing as well. With his task done, Vardreth returned to the center of the formation.

During this entire time he maintained distance from Yoshiro's forces. Approaching from another route, Vardreth's group finally made it to one of the entrances of the defended location. It was at this point that Vardreth's elite soldiers made their way forward, heading the company of mercenaries, and prepared to provide any necessary credentials in order to get access to the camps. He was prepared to follow any designated individuals in order to pick up orders from leadership deeper within the complex maze.

The first thing that struck him was the enclosed quarters of the place, immediately followed by the fog. Vardreth's mind was already racing with tactical insights in using the terrain to his advantage, but also kept in mind the downsides of such an area as well. Narrowing his eyes, Vardreth contemplated a few particular ideas before a cruel smile played across his face.

Zadi

"Ugh, this place is just awful...my clothing will inevitably become dirtied and soaked in muddy water by the end of this campaign. Well, whatever helps our side win this war."

Zadi lamented the future state of his pink kimono and Balbadd style, baggy pants, wishing they wouldn't get dirty during this swampy war campaign. Zadi's trusty soldiers didn't like the change in scenary either, but for different, more important reasons than their blonde commander; disease, venomous animals, and hidden predators were associated with swamps, all of which could mean the demise of an entire army, regardless of the number of battles survived. Sure Zadi knew of these deadly obstacles, but complaining about something as mundane as dirt on pink clothing might amuse the troops and raise their morale. If not, then Zadi would continue to complain for his own sake.

"Hm, well, better interrogate one of the prisoners again, just in case I missed anything."

Zadi got up from his chair and made his way to the courtyard of the swamp fortress. The courtyard held most everything deemed important, including the former residence of this not-so-fine establishment, now prisoners due to the blonde commander's swift occupation. Anyway, the handful of prisoners were each had their hands tied behind their backs and guarded in a square formation by four troops in order to cover all angles efficiently. Zadi didn't have many troops to spare given they hadn't been given reinforcements after occupying the swamp fortress. However, Zadi was expecting someone to show up, so in the meantime Zadi decided to use his magic ring, Dark Blood, to interrogate the prisoners.

"Alright, so which of you have I not interrogated yet?"

Scanning the herd of prisoners, Zadi inevitably chose himself due to the silence said prisoners gave their blonde captor. The prisoners obviously didn't want to cooperate given their loyalty to Emperor Yoshiro, but they also knew their silent resistance didn't matter whatsoever! After all, Zadi's ring was able to look into an individual's memory five days prior using little to no effort. Anyway, Zadi chose the prisoner he believed to hold the last remaining information he believed would help secure this fortress. Zadi walked up to the chosen prisoner, put his Dark Ring hand on said prisoner's forehead, and used the ring's superb memory-reading abilities.

"Nope, also nothing of interest. We may have captured this fortress a little too late. Oh well, not like we can't defend this place, RIGHT MEN!?"

"HOOOAAAH!"

Upon hearing his forces cheer in agreement, Zadi was informed of reinforcements coming 'to the rescue', as it were. The blonde commander did need more troops, but knowing he'd have to share command of this fortress or even lose command altogether bothered Zadi a little. Well, whoever takes command better not get my lovely troops killed. I've lost enough as is... Indeed, Zadi had already lost too many men to the swamp alone plus the fortress' forced occupation. Seeing the reinforcements coming through the gates filled Zadi with mixed emotions, but he set the negative emotions aside and attempted to greet his compatriot...or superior.

"Welcome to this god awful fortress! May your clothes be ruined and your nostrils assaulted! My name is Zadi Medmar, current or former commander of this swampy fortress. Up to you how you need my assistance, commanderrr..? Sorry, I don't know your name."

Zadi greeted the incoming commander who's name Zadi did not know. With open arms, Zadi tried to be humorous, again for amusement's sake, and opened his body and soul up to whatever physical or mental beating this incoming commander might have ready for the fashionably dressed, blonde commander. Getting some sort of reaction from the new commander would help Zadi position himself properly so as not to upset anyone; so far the eyes of the new commander seemed to be fixed on the location, probably scanning the area for strengths and weaknesses. The new commander's horse and troops looked fierce, trained, and therefore elite, unlike Zadi's troops whom have gotten used to Zadi's lax attitude. However, most of all, the new commander looked younger than the already young Zadi. The baby-faced commander didn't look battle-hardened from where Zadi was standing, but anything is possible; If Zadi had decided to wear a shirt underneath his kimono, then you'd be unable to see his prominent scar across his chest and abdomen.

Ugh, just great...he looks younger than me. He's probably some noble's child or something. Oh well, he was sent for a good reason, right?

Aside from the prominent scar, Zadi would look odd with the assortment of magic weapon, mundane weapons, and other magic and non-magic items on his person. The rings looked natural enough, but the shield and crossbow layered upon Zadi's back looked very cumbersome, not to mention the two swords at Zadi's left hip. Having opened his kimono up to the new commander meant Zadi also relieved his other small items such as a bottle of slime and a spool of string. Hopefully Zadi looked professional, stylish, both, or at least not dumb. However, what wasn't showing was Zadi's golden fan, tucked away in one of the blonde's kimono sleeves.

‘Eris, a goddess who existed with a hatred filled inside her heart, bore a lot of painful things; hardship, forgetfulness, starvations, pains and many more. They said it was her fault for fostering evil war and battle, causing discord in the world and that because of that, no man would love her, nor mortal nor the gods. She was a little thing at the first, but after she grew until she strides the earth with her head striking the heaven. Eris then—‘

The black haired girl closed the book that she was reading before putting it on the table and closed her eyes, wondering if a hand from above might be the cause of the war that was happening in Kou as well. It was an interesting book, something that she bought at Reim a long time ago and she just had the time to read it now. However, it was not the time to lose in thoughts thinking about theories and fantasizing about that. Noir stood up from her seat, noting that she should get ready soon and head out to the camp. Although she didn’t wish for the war to happen, but for now helping to end it sooner would be better and she could only hope that she could protect the current emperor.

Now that she thought about it, was it really the fate that led her here and let her to reach this far. It was Shousui who kidnapped her at first when she was staying in Reim, bringing her to Kou and after that, her life changed. A lot of thing happened and finally she ended up participating in a war between father and son, an unfortunate thing but they might need to settle something in the end. She wondered again about what might happen in her battle, it seemed like she might meet Lady Shousui and Yakutetsu again because if she did a little bit overthinking for this matter, it might have been the former noblewoman intention all along for her to be participating in a battle. Everything was so strange… but the black haired girl decided to just walk in the path that she already chose.

“Haku, are you ready?” She would ask her beast gently and after the liger growled with a determination, Noir would nod at him and soon she would glance at her fox before speaking again, “Kuzunoha, I will need you to take care of yourself for a little bit. I will be back as soon as I can, I promise.” The little fox frowned, worried about her master. She would leap onto Noir’s chest though and nuzzling her master lovingly as if she wanted to cheer on Noir. After giving the fox several pets, she would let Kuzunoha to leap towards Haku while she would continue to prepare everything that she needs.

A sigh would escape her lips and she walked alongside Haku to the camp, gripping tight the staff of storm that she took from Yakuroro instead of letting it hang on her back. “It will be my first time to participate in a war, Haku. I wonder… if I need to end someone’s life with this hand later…” Noir looked up to the sky but soon she closed her eyes, a pained expression was carved on her face. ‘I’ve killed some men before… although they deserved it… but I’ve tainted my hands once so tainting them more shouldn’t be a problem… yet…’ She could feel Haku nuzzles her leg and she would smile at her liger, petting his thick fur before continue to walk towards the camp until they arrived at the beginning of the ravine.

Rolling in along with the storm was thew massive whale. Merrze stood atop the flying beast with a strong and demanding presence. Coming over the mountains she looked down to see the enemy army. The two armies were amassing. The last time the fanalis had seen a battle of this size was many years ago. The excitement, the fear, anticipation but concern filled her as she remembered what war was like. Below her besides the kou troops were those who followed her. Raising a red flag to signify that they were following the fanalis. Hopefully they would be prepared to face the horrors of a real battle.

A stern look was on her face, keeping a strong look. On the whale she slowly lowered among her troops. Hovering slightly above them. As they marched she would have the whale give out a bellowing noise, similar to that of thunder. The great beast would be one that would strike fear into those unknowing. She would hop off the whale as it was close to the ground. Joining her troops she would at the moment send the whale to the sky. For now it would be out of reach. She would have the creature take the skies. and flap its wings to bring in the biggest storm it possibly could. The rain beat against the ground, as the winds howled and the lightning tore the sky.

She would be amongst them ready to lead the troops into battle. Turning around she would give them a small talk. Many seem concerned, others a facade on their faces to hide fear, others having an expression of emptiness as if they were used to it. With a strong and confident phrase she would speak.

"Wars like this is how legends are born.
But there is no glory in war. We are here to fight for what is right, and to shake the world. We will show them that we fought and died on the right side of history. Go out there and do what you can, because together we can conquer the dark.

NOIR ECRYOLA ||| MERRZE ||| LAGI

A soft pattering of steps lingered behind the beautiful figure of the raven-haired sorceress. The quiet watched as the woman gripped her staff, as if she were holding it tightly to grant her some courage. War was upon them, all of them, and it seemed there would be no fairy tale ending for these people. Death was written in the cards, it was written in the sky--even the ground smelled of putrid, rotting flesh. Visions of carved up enemy soldiers haunted the battleground as the swampland around them unearthed foul, deathly smells.

“E-excuse me, miss…” A voice asked, its volume and pitch just as soft as the steps she took. The voice would come from a meek looking girl, just barely one that has hit maturity, there on the battlefield. An odd sight indeed, but it would be no surprise if she was there for other means. “I...I was forced to come here...could...would...may I please ask for your help?” Everything about the woman was pitiful--her hair a messy, greasy black, her outfit ragged and torn, as if she was plucked from slavery and placed into the enemy encampment. It was hard not to feel sympathy for her, her very existence was something to be concerned about--a walking cry for help. The young woman would walk closer to the raven-haired sorceress and kneel at her feet, as if she turned to genuflect and praise the very ground this woman walked upon.

“You...you seem strong! Your eyes...they...they are kind,” The woman stammered, her eyes welling up with tears as she went to grab for the hand of the sorceress, “My brother...I have walked so far...please you must help!” The young woman would look Noir in the eyes, filled with sadness and regret. There was something familiar about the girl’s eyes, something that would resonate with the raven-haired magician. Should she follow her, it would take her on an interesting path, diverging from the heat of battle and into unknown territory...though, who knows what would become of the girl and her brother should Noir refuse her impassioned request.

The soldiers being led by the Fanalis had many thoughts running through each of their individual minds, but there were some common thoughts that crossed each of their minds as they marched behind their commander, such as 'Will we win, will I survive?' and even questioning thoughts about the whale that the white lioness so gallantly lead their forces with. As she brought herself down to join the earth-bound soldiers they looked at her with awe. None of them had known her personally, but from the rumors they heard, and the sight of her sky-beast they became enamored with their commander. Despite the imposing figure she was in their minds, they still held the fear of death and  failure in the back of their minds eating away at their hope and growing from whatever anxiety they felt.

Despite the hidden fears amongst the majority of the masses there were those whose demeanor was cold, and detached, the face of veterans. They held a higher chance of survival compared to the greenhorns who had yet to spill blood, or have their blood spilled in the name of their country. Of course there were those who were neither the battle-scarred, or the newly recruited, there were those who've fought in a few large scale battles, and held a respectable fear, something that separates the brave from the foolhardy.

As her small speech was ending an adolescent boy, holding a small letter in his hands. The boy was obviously new to this considering how he stood there shifting his legs for a moment before realizing that he still held the letter enclosed in both hands, the edges becoming crumbled by his grasp. As he realized what he had been doing he would simply bow and hand the letter over  to the fanalis before running off, most likely to get away from the war-zone wishing to be in a place of safety when the clash of forces would ensue.

The contents of the letter were straight forward, it stated that Nerrze was going to be joined by Lieutenant Baozhai, current commander of the 5th cavalry regiment. They were a little low on supplies, and numbers after a recent ambush, so they were assigned to join the fanalis and aid her in the battle to come. In the second half of the letter Lieutenant BaoZhai requested that a medical tent be set up for some of the wounded soldiers, and if they had any mounts, or soldiers they could spare for the cavalry to make them more formidable for the fight to come. The last part of the letter was a simple statement asking for Merrze to set up a command tent if possible so they could meet, discuss strategy, and possible send out some scouts to get a grasp for what they'd be dealing with

The growing storm overhead surged as an ominous bellow of a thunderclap echoed across the skies. While the wind screamed, flashes of lightning would streak across the dark heavens. The jungle would grow bright, followed by a shaking tremble of thunder before growing dark once more. Buckets of rain poured down among the already soaked men, pelting them and beating against the swampland in an offbeat tempo.

The army of Yoshirou's men scrambled around like ants in their nests. Last-minute preparations for their forthcoming monumental battle were made as messenger boys ran about, delivering information between the different overseeing commanders. Despite the tantrum of a storm that raged overhead, they moved with their sense of organized chaos. Soldiers were gathered and then sent to a commander’s camp with a quick scan. It was in this way that Lagi's fate was chosen, with a sour-faced soldier directing him to a one such area.

There was no elegance in the way the master beast-tamer was led towards the camp, his body pushed forwards by the herd of men that followed behind him. Within the grouping of tents, Lagi would see others like him. Men dressed in the role of a mercenary, many carrying their own tattoos and scars. Occasionally there would be a proper soldier dressed in Yoshirou’s uniform armor, but this particular camp was mostly filled with hired help and “reformed” criminals.

Lagi would catch sight of a tall man standing with his hands clasped behind him while beneath the canopy of an open tent. He was clad in emerald and golden armor, his black eyes narrowed in thought as he spoke in a tone of calm authority. Even with the squall that thundered above their heads, the commander held the face of aloofness, his mask never wavering in front of his men. Each blunt word that was muttered by him was carefully calculated as he tied up the finishing parts of business into a neat bow.

Fortunately for Lagi, he would spend more time around the lion among hyenas. His “group” was about to be sorted into one of the many squadrons that made up the forces of the camp, however a soldier approached the organizer. Quietly muttering into his ear, the man who was splitting up the men nodded his head.

“Aye, you, you, and you!” The soldier shouted, pointing his finger at his targets, which included one Lagi. With a jerk of his thumb, he gestured to a nearby tent before leading them to the location. It wasn’t set up far from the commander’s location, but due to the positioning of the opening to the tent, Lagi wouldn’t be able to spot the man in question.

“I don’t see why I gotta explain anythin’ to you,” the soldier grumbled as he wiped water off his brow, “but we need some men to scout ahead of us. You’ll be by Commander Xu, and it’ll be yar job to keep an eye out for traps. Make sure that ya don’t trip ‘em. It’ll also do us a real “favor” if your eyes could also watch the caves and vines. Those Gao soldiers are like rats, I tell ya,” he continued in a drawl before nodding his head. Just as he was about to step out of the shelter of the tent, the man paused before reaching a hand into a pocket of the overcoat he was wearing on top of his armor. He withdrew a paper tied up with twine before tossing it at Lagi. “Be helpful for me real quick an’ run that down to Commander Xu while I finish up some other business.”

Around the camp one thing was for sure, everyone hated the murky, and melancholic area that they had been deployed to. The fact that were in a fortress only made things slightly better in the mind of the soldiers. As nothing was going on at the moment around the fortress many of the soldiers were doing their own things to occupy the unknown time limit before battle would begin. Some sat around talking with their brothers-in-arms, sharpening their weapons, or whatever pre-battle rituals made them feel comfortable, or at peace. Though there were those around the fortress who held a grim look on their face, one thing, or another had gotten to them, casting a feeling of impending demise, or other such pessimistic thoughts. The humor of their blonde commander made some of the others feel confident, thinking that if someone as powerful as their commander could stay light of heart that there was a chance for them to make it out of this with few casualties. However, others scoffed at him behind his back thinking that they needed someone better.

While there was mostly nothing going on there was a few small groups who were doing tasks that would be necessary for battle. One solider went to check and take inventory on the fortresses armory where a majority of weapons and supplies for the battle where being held. While another small group of people in light armor, spyglasses, and light weapons were heading out. They were to go on a scouting mission to see what sort of movements the enemies could be making, and if they had anything that they would need to worry about. Then there was simply those who were eating, and resting to make sure that they were in good enough health, and state of mind. Even a growling stomach could lead to your death in battle.

The fortress was quiet, and if it weren't for the armored people with weapons, and the banners of war it would be hard to assume that these people were about to lay down their lives for what they believed to be the right thing. Unfortunately the peace of the fort didn't last for too much longer. In almost a sudden burst of red  pillars in two sides of the camp. After the deafening noise, and the red pillars had faded the only thing that could be seen was two raging fires at two different parts of the base at the exact same time. The people of the base were not prepared for such a thing, and a few of them ran around in panic, and hiding in the case they were being attacked. Others, who were more concerned with the fires would run towards one, or the other.

It wasn't long before a disheveled looking young archer ran towards their blonde commander. His face covered in ash, and his armor partially burned away it being obvious that he had been caught in whatever had happened. He tried to speak, but he was out of breath and had to take a moment to breath, his chest heaving as he coughed a bit. "S-something exploded sir, both the barracks and armory have been hit, we can stop both fires, but we only have the equipment to deal with one at a time." The words fumbling out of his mouth as he tried o explain the situation to his commander.

The cause of the fires were not clear at the moment, and they were spreading quickly causing the conflagrations to rise into the sky a bit as they ate up as much fuel as they could. It was obvious that whichever fire was left to be taken care of second would cause more damage to the area as it would be left burning for longer. A few of the soldiers looking towards him for guidance, for him to make a choice, for him to tell them what they needed to do.

As the boiling tempest bubbled overhead in tune with the growing bloodlust of armies, soldiers scurried around the camp, the soggy ground squishing under their boots which by now were filled with mixed rain and swamp water, making sure the camp’s fortifications were sound in case of enemy attack. Most everyone was so busy preparing, they paid Vardreth and his band no mind, save for one semi-scrawny man in armor standing at six foot ten inches tall. He cleared his throat, hand outstretched for identification papers. His brown eyes shifted uneasily from side to side, scanning the force Vardreth had brought but then focused on Vardreth. “I was told another group was to be arriving. I’m to assume that’s you? You were expected here much earlier.” He shook his head, his eyes now looking at the horses. “However, I can see the reason for your tardiness,” he said, his tone suggesting Vardreth and his men lacked decent knowledge about the environment since they brought horses into a murky mud pond such as the ravine. “Dismount and tie your horses up. You’re already late, so hurry up and go into the main tent. General Chao is waiting for you.”

General Chao:

In the camp’s center was a giant red tent, home to the general in command of the encampment. One Vardreth entered, a big, broad man towering at seven foot would grunt without looking up from the map resting on the central table, his mouth forming a frown. The room was barely lit but still bright enough the read and see another’s face a few feet away. Documents filled barrels alongside the tent; their importance a mystery to anyone who hadn’t sorted through them. “I can’t believe Emperor Gao Yuan Zu would have send in a teenager like you… Assuming he actually believes in you and your little mercenary band… This isn’t some game, kid, and I’m not here to babysit. Just do as you’re told and stay out of my way.” He looked up with narrowed eyes, his jaw clenched. He barely moved, his body rigid like an immovable mountain. “I heard you brought in horses,” he scoffed. “Well, at any rate if we run out of provisions, they can be cooked. Those beasts are useless in this terrain. There’s too much mud, and there’s no telling where they’d sink and get stuck thanks to this god forsaken fog.”

General Chao pointed to a location on the map with on hand while the other pressed down against the table, his palm flat. “This is where we are currently. What few reports we have state that the enemy is stationed somewhere to the north, but this fog has been keeping us from getting a clear view on their fortifications and has been too dense. Most of our scouts have been lost out there, so the only options that are viable is to attack first or wait here until they attack us. We can’t allow them the opportunity to strike first and ambush us, so we’ll be taking the fight to them.” Thunder roared and shook the ground beneath their feet, though the general didn’t stir except to cross his arms over his chest. “This weather will also prove to be troublesome especially if the conditions worsen. However, I’m sure you’ll be fine,” he sneered, his face twisting unnaturally into what was suppose to be a smile but only distorted his face to make him more grotesque. “I’ll be putting you and your men up front. Your job will be to survey the area in front of us as we make our advance. Make sure there’s no traps or ambushes waiting for us. Is that clear? Any questions, boy?”

Today basically had "ominous future" written all over it, how the hell did the sky change its peaceful demeanor as soon as he arrived? Whatever wicked god that took enjoyment in the deaths of men on the battlefield, was this the same as playing fancy music to seduce a beautiful woman in a ballroom? If the dance floor was war, then those with two left feet were probably the most likely individuals to fall face first on their blades. Too bad for them, Lagi was here for more personal reasons.

As he moved forward towards the tent, Lagi would take notice of a Kou general, probably someone that was personally employed by the king to take charge. "The kind of guy whose clothes are actually something worth stealing after a long night of passion in the local whorehouse. " He was joking in his mind, something that made Orie laugh on the inside as well. However, Lagi maintained a neutral posture, seemingly unreadable in a sense of personality.  However, a look of surprise was fixed upon the fallen king's face when he seemed to be picked for something.

"Oh?"

Moving towards the tent, Lagi would slouch as he waited for the man to arrive. Apparently, Lagi was chosen for a scouting mission, being tossed a very important piece of paper to be given to Xu.

"Alright..."

Lagi would hide his smile, moving out of the tent and back into the rain in order to give Xu the message. "Traps, caves, and Gao's men. The perfect holiday hangover, all I need is three bottles of El Ragu to write a trilogy story about it." After a while, moving at basic speeds, Lagi made his way over to Xu to hand the letter.

"I'm assuming your proper title is a commander, this message is for you."

As Noir and her beast were heading toward the camp, Haku halted himself. His ears perked up together as he heard something, a light steps following behind them. With a quick move, the liger maneuvered his body towards where the steps came from and put himself in a defensive mode. The magician would then tap her beast’s head, as if asking him to wait until the girl asked him to attack. But when Haku started to growl, the black haired girl didn’t stop him, wanting to wait until the owner of the steps revealed themselves. The staff that she had on her grip would be always ready to be the medium to cast spells just in case it was an enemy.

The sight before her eyes was a little bit strange, a girl, probably only several years younger than her approaching her with a stuttered words, asking for help. Of course, Noir would observe the girl first, didn’t know if this girl might mean harm or not. Judging from her look, Noir assumed the girl was one of the refugees… although she might be something else, for example a slave. The magician was taken aback when the girl knelt in front of her, something that she didn’t expect at all and at the moment, she was confused as she didn’t know how to react. “Please, stand up. I am not a royalty or anything that require you to kneel in front of me.” Noir said, kneeling down in front of the girl as well as she tried to get on the girl’s eye level. “What is it about your brother? How can I help you? And…” she paused a little bit, knowing that if she decided to help this poor girl then maybe she wouldn’t be able to gather in the camp on time. But she couldn’t just turn down someone’s plea, so after a quick decision making, she decided that she would try to help the girl and come back soon to the camp to give whatever support that would be needed. “…and what is your name?”

As General Chao spoke Vardreth listened with a look of indifference across his face. The sound of thunder and rain beginning in the background did nothing to worry Vardreth; instead he was moderately pleased. Anything that caused the enemy forces to move through more difficult terrain, while they sat back in their fortifications, was a plus to him. Most of Gao Yuan Zu's forces were already stationed in the swampland. There wouldn't be a need for them to traverse through the difficulties of the swampland.

Yoshiro's forces, however, would have to slog through it while getting splattered by rain.

Once he was asked the final question, Vardreth snorted. "Don't forget my forces are mercenaries. My contract with Emperor Gao Yuan Zu has made it clear that while I will fight under his banner, I will not run into suicide missions... With regard to the horses, I naturally understand their limited uses in this environment. But if it comes down to it, it's my forces that benefit from it and not yours." Looking over the map, Vardreth worked to memorize what he could.

"I'll take a look at the routes and have my scouts move ahead, but I have more plans than just disarming any of their forward traps. Give me a copy of this map. If things get rough, I suggest retreating. I can at least cover your retreat with what I have in store. Occupying this land and being able to defend it, this is a valuable terrain to have hold over. The enemy has to fight their way through, but our troops can pass freely..." Vardreth's eyes flashed as he looked back up to General Chao. Who would leave a defensive position in order to strike out at enemies in the open? The man seemed to hunger for battle. Furthermore, when defending a location it was more important to maintain ownership over the land; the enemy needed to push through, whereas they only needed to sit tight. The enemy was on a time frame, but Gao's forces were fine with time passing. He was in the shadows, while his enemies were in the light.

With all of that being said, Vardreth needed to study the map closer in order to determine the best points to put up his own defensive lines. He also wanted to figure out how to most effectively create a kill zone for the enemy once Yoshiro's forces started flowing into the terrain that could only be described as a swampy catacomb.

I've spoken with staff and it was decided to rescind any mention of fortifications, since Yoshiro's forces are mostly gathering on the outside of the ravine since Gao's forces are occupying the ravine/swampland.

The new commander's response let Zadi know exactly how wrong the blonde commander was about all of his assumptions; "You must have me mistaken for someone else. I just guided your reinforcements through the swampland. Good luck, commander." And with Zadi's metaphorical slap in the face having been delivered, the guider left swifter than he came. Zadi could feel the sting of his assumptions and was prepared to retreat into a chair after directing his newly arrived reinforcements, but a sudden turn of events change everything instantly! Zadi noticed both pillars of fire rise from the fort, but only when the archer mentioned exactly where the fort was hit by the fires did Zadi realize how dire this situation truly was.

Ah, dammit! The barracks and armory at the same time! This is obviously some sort of presumptive strike, but thinking about how this happened won't put out the fires...where the soldiers sleep or where the weapons are kept? Well, can't use weapons without rested soldiers.

"Barracks first! I'll try to slow the other fire."

If only Zadi had brought with him his giant gourd; a magical gourd which could convert magoi into water. A priceless magic tool in a situation such as this, but left behind due to its size. An error on Zadi's end, but with his other magic tools in hand, maybe the blonde commander could figure something else out. Zadi used his exceptional speed to race towards the fire blazing through the armory in an attempt to, at the very least, slow down the fire while the barracks were being take care of. The blonde commander arrived to a blazing storm eating up not only the fortress but also the weapons.

Good thing we didn't store any explosives here...not that we have any to begin with...

Scanning his surroundings, Zadi could tell using his magic tools wouldn't help as much as brute force; getting out his tower shield, the blonde commander used a great deal of his might in an attempt to blow out as much of the fire as he could. A Flapping Dragonfly would have to do the trick or make the situation far worse. After all, wind can both put out or escalate a firestorm. Zadi wouldn't put more effort in than the base value, just in case the situation did get worse by blowing wind in the fire's direction.

The young woman analyzed the letter, muttering slightly as she read. She acknowledged the content of the letter. Her troops only had enough mounts for themselves. They did have some supplies that they would be able to spare and had the capabilities to set a medical tent. Some of her followers included healers from villages. With her past and injuries the fanalis also made sure they had medical supplies on hand encase there were those in need. She was fine with working with others but hopefully the person joining her would not be a restriction. The lioness preferred to do thing her way when it came to combat. Plus her troops listened to her, and only her. Hopefully they wouldn't try to take command from her, or else it wouldn't go well.

"Alright, The 5th Cavalry Regiment of the Kou army is on its way over to join us. They have informed us that it would be helpful if we had a medic and command tent. Those with medical experience start setting up the tents, make sure our supplies haven't been touched. I need three or four of you to help set up the command tent. After that be on stand by, make sure to have your weapon nearby, anything can happen As for the others, make sure to have your mounts ready put away. Mounted combat will be hard once we start besieging.".

She would head with her fellow troops and set up her tent. They put up the wood frame, draping a heavy animal skin over it. After a few moments the small structure would be up. Marching in she would stand, pondering The rain crashing against the outside of the tent. She would have to get more information from the officer who would be showing up. Merrze only knew enough about the area they were attacking to command her troops. She would try to work with this Baozhai, they would formulate something, try and find away to surround the fort and take it over. The Original plan was for the young girl to lead the charge, to divide and conquer the enemy forces. Work her way in like a splinter, and then that way they'd have someone on the inside of it. With more forces she could maybe use some for distraction or change up the formation. Other divisions could affect it though. If it was a full on siege attacking blindsides might be more difficult. She gathered her thoughts, he would be here soon and they would have to start discussing immediately.

“My...my brother...he was taken! Taken by those soldiers! They took him! Ripped him from my hands as I tried to save him! I just...I couldn’t save him…” The young woman buried her face into her hands and wept. She quickly recovered and removed her face from her hands, revealing faint traces of makeup smeared against her face. Normally, peasants wouldn’t wear makeup, though it seems the woman was used for other purposes. “My...my name is Fu. I...work...here, with the soldiers, ....those soldiers...and they took my brother! All because…” Before the woman could explain herself, she ceased her explanation, her head darting around to look around the swampy forest around them. As if wracked with insurmountable fear, the woman clutched the raven-haired sorceress’ hand, grasping for anything that would provide comfort to her in this moment.

“Please...there’s no time! I think...I think I hear them coming...you must help me! This way! They had me stay at a village not far from here...you...I trust you...there is something about your face, I just, ….I need someone to help me!” The woman was standing now, her hand still firmly grabbing the magician’s free hand, as her face was lit up with newfound confidence and indignation. While most women with her disposition and demeanor would otherwise be frozen or flee in the face of danger, this woman was capable of thinking rationally. The village near the battle camp would surely be caught in the danger, and although there is a good chance it would be kept out of harm’s way, there’s no telling what sort of danger could arise if the battle should go awry. More innocent civilians could be in danger, so perhaps the woman saw an opportunity to save not just her brother, but also her fellow townspeople by enlisting the aid of the beautiful magician and her pet.

“May I ask your name? You have a staff...are you a sorceress? My mother used to speak of them when I was younger...talented women with the ability to use magic...are you like that?” Fu asked, still tense from the thought of the soldiers who took her brother encroaching upon their position.

At first it would take a moment for a few of the newer soldiers she commanded knew which jobs they were doing, and what they needed to do overall. In just a few short moments a few of the soldiers had stepped forward and began to assist the lioness in setting up a command tent for their forces. It wouldn't take long, and they had set it up quickly and soon went about their posts. The people in charge of the medical tent would set up an improvised area so they could preform first aid, and if needed medical work on any of the calvary members when they would arrive. To prepare for this a few scouts spread off in opposite directions to see if there were any enemy forces, or for when the cavalry would be approaching, and they would need to signal them over to their improvised camp at the moment. Though while most went about working, and their posts there were a small few groups who were spending their time relaxing, and just waiting for when the real action would start.

A small rumble began to vibrate through the area as a scout came into the tent,he walked closer to the lioness and saluted briefly before going on to his report. "The cavalry is here, we just lead them to the medical area and it seems that a portion of their forces have been wiped." The words fell coldly from the scout's mouth, as if he didn't care much for the lives of his fellow soldiers, maybe he was just numb to war and reporting the deaths of others. However he would not linger around for long, and soon enough would leave the tent. All around the tent the sound of horses whinnying, and snorting as they were relaxed filled the air for a few moments as the cavalry outside began to settle.  However there was a weird noise made be an unknown animal that let out a chirp like cry that rattled around in the air for a moment before stopping  Soon enough two cavalry soldiers walked inside, and pulled apart the tent before a young looking female walked through standing there with her hands at her side. She was thin, and short with a soft face, and placid demeanor with a small comforting smile. She wore the dress of an official, and even had a medal on her shirt, a medal for cavalry soldiers who provide excellent service to the army.

Lieutenant Baozhai :

The young female saluted before she began to speak towards the other female. "Lieutenant Baozhai, full name Sun Baozhai, and commander of the 5th cavalry regiment, here to provide my service to you." She stepped forward after saluting and soon stood close enough for them to converse and plan together. Baozhai didn't seem to carry any weapons on her, it seemed weird sucha  small young girl would walk around without a weapon during a time of war, especially as a soldier.  She would soon begin to tell the other commander about their situation. "We were coming from the east, meaning to join with a different regiment to aid in another battle, but we soon got ambushed, and we noticed that the troops you'd be attacking might need a little assistance." She said calmly in her sweet, and hanging voice to make sure they were briefed. "It seems that they have bunkered down in the fort, and before we can get close to infiltrate it we will have to get through the troops they have outside to defend from attacks." She said before her chest went down a bit, taking in some air after the long sentence she gave without break. She didn't seem nervous, but she did seem to hold a lot of energy "Besides all that its my pleasure to meet, and I hope I can be of assistance with my troops." [/color]  She said as the mood lightened a bit, and she tried to get along with the ally before her.

While Baozhai and Merr would get time to plan for what they would do involving the fortress and outside defense forces, the rest of the troops were a bit lost on what to do. The cavalry had received no command since Baozhai had immediately went to the command tent in order to discuss plans with the lioness. Some of the cavalry was getting fixed up by the medics, while others were slacking around, or maybe even training as they waited for orders. Some soldiers were lost on what to do and ended up wandering around camp until someone would call out to them. Though among the animals that were feeding, and drinking water the weird chirping noise could still be occasionally heard throughout the camp.

Commander Jiemin Xu always conducted himself with the air of nobility. But not in the sense of someone who was spoiled since birth, expecting each and every man that he encountered to bow. Instead, Xu carried himself with regality and honor. Despite his higher position both in birth and in power, Jiemin had the decency to speak with an undertone of respect. He was well liked among his troops for his no-nonsense attitude and dry wit.

So, it wasn't surprising when Commander Xu nodded his head in thanks to the man in tattoos. Taking the letter, he promptly tore open the seal and read over its contents before rolling it back up. It would seem that the time to move out, something that became obvious to the rest of the men in the tent when he warned them to wrap up whatever they had immediately.

"Thank you..." Commander Xu began after returning his attention to Lagi, pausing for the other to inform him of his name. If he did so or not was of no consequence to Jiemin, and he would say nevertheless, "I advise that you return to your troop. We're moving out shortly. I hope to see you well after the battle. I don't believe I have to warn you, but watch your step. I would not be surprised if Gao had his men litter this ravine with traps, and with the storm... There isn't much to say other than anyone can lose his life here." His gaze wandered to the area outside the tent, his hands moving behind his back. To be entirely honest, Commander Xu had his doubts about the battle. Their forces were split up into four to target Gao's positions, two of which were defensive. And with the storm overhead, it could prove to be an uphill battle if his troops weren't careful.

”Ah, I’m sorry for rambling,” he muttered after a moment once he looked back at Lagi. ”Best of luck to you.”

The effects of the inferno on the fortress were rapidly known from how it bellowed and spread throughout the structures at a staggering rate, but luckily thanks to the choice of the blonde commander the barracks would soon have the aide of the soldiers and their equipment they were able to save the soldiers in the barracks. The fire had destroyed most of the barracks, and started to damage parts of the walls, and the surrounding area, though there was injuries, but no fatalities. However, the danger of the fire Zadi had went to be help still needed to be resolved. The gust of wind that he had sent forward would create an unexpected result, a rare disaster would come about because of this. The immediate effects of the gust caused by the shield would be beneficial, it blew out the weaker parts of the fire, but closer to the base of the explosion the gust would only feed the immolating disaster, but there was another effect of the gust, due to it and the opposite gust of natural wind  would create one small motion into the air. Soon enough the fire started to thin out, but expand upwards at the same time. The spinning winds pulling the blaze from the armory and into the air as a fire whirl!

The sudden outcome of his actions towards the fire would most likely cause some relief in the hearts of the soldiers, and possibly a source of worry for more. The fire whirl would pull away from its source quickly due to the winds influence leaving most of the armory in cinders, while ruins stood with some visible weapons being alright. The whirl suddenly drifting through the fortress, causing small fires which were quickly taken care of by the troops that had come to the nearby area to aide with the armory fire. Some soldiers would help with putting out the small fires caused by the twirling blaze that was soon to leave the fortress.  Quite a few of the hands at the fortress would be helping with the people in the barracks, while others would be assessing damage, or helping with the small fires. None of the men at the fort had time for anything outside of the fort, a bit of chaos had been thrown at them, intentionally it had seemed.

Though while the chaos inside the fort seemed to have lessened at the moment the chaos in nature would only be getting more dire because of the whirl. The fire whirl was quickly able to gain fuel in the form of waste that was left outside of the fort, and would only increase the damage on the swamp. It began to trail a chaotic path through the nature, burning at the fauna, and staying away from the water due to the wind currents.  As it began to burn at fauna it would also begin to burst the natural flammable gas patches throughout the swamp. The gas explosions lighting more parts of the swamp on fire from the side of the armory.  This would be a tactical advantage as a large patch of the landscape had just become engulfed in disaster thus blocking off one of their paths if they needed to move.

Just as the fires had began to calm down within the base a few beat up scouts would limp their way towards the blonde commander. One was holding the other, the slumped solider having....blood on his uniform, someone had injured him in combat. They were barely burned, they must be part of the scout regime that went out earlier! Once the more coherent one gained his breath he panted and looked up at him. "S-sir when we were out scouting we got attacked by an advance team, our leader and us are the only ones out of our regime that survived the advance team." He said quickly, and terrified, obviously new to the scene of war. Soon his pace began to slow down as he explained the rest. "It seems a l-large force is coming to attack us, or siege us, our commander should be back soon, said he had to grab some stuff and then he'd assist you with defending." The scout relayed before he and his companion began to limp towards the medical tents.

General Chou glanced down at the boy. For someone his age, he was pretty snobbish, like a rich noble looking down at the lower class and seeing only disposable trash. The general looked back down at the map, listening vaguely to the boy’s words. When the mention of retreating became up, General Chao’s muscles tightened all over his body as he ground his teeth together. “I’ve never retreated before, and I’ll be damned if I am forced to retreat because anything you plan happens to fail.”

His heavy frame left the table to go to a nearby barrel. From it, he grabbed a rolled up parchment and turned to hand it over to the teenage mercenary. General Chao was not the sort of general to sit back and hold position, but fate seemed to have other plans given his current situation. Yet why did he have to be stuck with this kid? A kid that was old enough to be his son giving him orders on what to do? He’d rather be the one attacking, out of the battlefield surrounded by corpses. If only fate had switched the roles…

“Do what you will, then. Just don’t get in my way or in the way of my men,” growled General Chou. His attention turned back to the map on the table, his eyes focused yet glossed over as he thought good and hard about what to do next.

Meanwhile, outside the main tent, a small brown sparrow sat perched on a crate underneath some shelter. It cleaned itself occasionally, picking at its feathers much like any other bird. It had been there for awhile now, before Vardreth marched in with his company, though with the heavy rain beating down relentlessly, the bird’s intentions seemed to be only in keeping dry from the torrential downpour of the ever growing storm. Little would anyone know, its glassy black eyes were watchful as it cleaned and chirped, its intentions far from staying safe from the tempest.

If anything, the way that Lagi looked at this man was in a way that Lagi would look at a woman. They're assets, their special talents, what they can bring to the table. The tone of their voices, the way that they made eye contact with you, even their posture. Being a part time gigolo had its benefits when it taught you how to get a good feel for a person. From a first perspective, this looked like the real deal.

He let the man talk a little bit more and kept the dialogue short. Lagi wasn't keen on putting his foot in his mouth, and his suspicions about the traps were correct. However, it was in one of many great blessings that were bestowed upon Lagi that would allow him to properly deal with those traps in due time.

"Lady Luck, such a fickle woman. I guess we're just going to have to see if she likes me right now."

Walking back to the person currently in charge, for the time being, Lagi awaited the orders to move out

Everything about the woman was strange, Noir couldn’t tell whether or not this woman was telling the truth although it seemed that the despair that was painted on her face was apparent. But the hint of…make up on her face was something that made the magician doubted this girl who was standing in front of her. Was she a noble who got caught by the soldiers…? Or perhaps an escort…? Not only that, which soldier that she mentioned before? Was it soldier from Gao’s side or was it from Yoshiro’s side? Everything was vague at the moment and she would find out if she agreed to help the girl. With a soft sigh escaped from her lips, Noir nodded as if trying to tell herself that she was more than determined now.

The black haired girl put her hand on Fu’s shoulder, trying to calm her down because even if she was talking to Noir… she kept stammering. “Calm yourself down.” She said as she let the woman to clutch her hand as well, thinking that she might need to do that to ease herself at the moment. Then Fu mentioned about a village, the magician raised an eyebrow, it seemed like the problem could be bigger than she expecting. There was a big chance that the village would be caught in the battle and perhaps… even with her strength, she wouldn’t be able to entirely protect it from the battle. However it would be better than doing nothing and just watch.

Noir didn’t really like how the girl kept mentioning some silly stuff like how kind her eyes looked and about there was something on her face. There was absolutely nothing like those stuff on her, kind was not a word that would be fitting for her and something in her blank expression was not something that could make anyone trusted her. Not only that, she even described a female magician like her as a talented woman… it was not her preferences to receive such title. “My name is Noir, my liger here is Haku.” She said with her usual flat tone, although this one had a hint of colder tone. “You can say I am a sorceress, but I am not as talented as you thought. Also… as you lead the way, tell me more about yourself. What kind of work that you do with the soldier? And why did they took your brother?”

Heading to Benai first, Vardreth spoke. "I need Xiang Li, Zeriken, and each of the squad leaders to assemble immediately. Bring Bai Xue'er and prepare to make nine copies of this map within an hour. I'll need a representative of the regular troops as well." Though they would not be able to copy all of the topographical information, it would certainly be enough to familiarize themselves with the terrain. The more distinct map will be used to brief his officers.

Benai bowed briefly before disappearing. Within ten minutes the rest assembled. They were working from inside a small cave, several oil lamps lighting the interior. Vardreth glanced at the lamps; they had brought quite a bit of materials to help supply the outpost. It was up to a resourceful commander to use them, however. "During the time it took everyone to gather, I've been reviewing the lay of the land. This map is fairly robust - the soldiers around here really have taken their time scouting the area. Take a look around this part here." Vardreth pointed towards the primary entrance of the valley. "This is the area where our scouts found the enemy heading, however it wouldn't take a tactical genius to deduce this as their main point of entry. Traditionally this would be the most logical path through. Emperor Gao's forces have already made preparations for the invasion of those forces. One of the branches leads through our zone."

Vardreth began tracing a route. There were many splits and turns here and there, however the largest pathway already traced by him earlier. "Senior Xiang Li, I will need an insoluble solution concocted that can augment our current fuels. Enough for sixty barrels." Even as he spoke, both Bai Xue'er and Benai were working professionally, copying down the maps to the best degree they could. "Platoons three and four, I will need you to convert to water gear. Squad eight, you'll need to bring arrows and some of the solution, whereas squads five through seven will have the mercenaries each bringing a barrel. You know the drill."

Vardreth turned to Zeriken. "I will need to rely upon yourself and our magician mercenaries in order to provide a smokescreen." Vardreth then turned to the representative of the regulars - the mercenaries not a part of his core team. "Colonel Lu Jiang, I need your troops to gather flammable materials. Some wet, some dry. Ensure they have a dosage of the fuel mentioned before. When need be, we'll have smokescreens available to us." Vardreth pointed at several places on the map, using colored stones to represent their locations. There were several other stones also laying upon the map. Turning to Benai, Vardreth gave instructions. "For the maps for platoons one through eight, ensure they have the maps with everything on it. For our regular army, ensure there are decoys as well in case the map falls into the wrong hands." The Fang army has been a mercenary unit for many years now, and the soldiers were very tight-knit. The troops were also experienced, understanding Vardreth's intentions as he gave out orders.

"I will need these locations sectioned off. The topography in this area is perfect for an ambush, and I expect a battalion to be stationed there, but in order to funnel them into this area we will need to entice them to follow that direction." The location Vardreth pointed towards was one in which the high ground had lots of hidden areas for archers. It wasn't easy to get to, and it had a lot of cover from both ground and air. Magicians wouldn't be able to find it easily, and those from the ground had even less of a chance to notice their position. It would take his mercenary soldiers some time to get in place, so they were the first that would be moving out. "Platoons three and four will be in charge of this. First platoon will be in charge of communications. Your routes are colored in red and green. Ensure that you practice scorched earth tactics during phase two. Second platoon will stick with me at central command. If anything big shows up, make sure to get word to me as soon as possible. Remember, platoons one through four are working auxiliary roles; it will be up to our regular troops to pull the enemy forward through a mix of a slow sting-and-retreat tactics. Now, everyone, familiarize yourselves and get ready to lead your troops. Oh, as for our allies, try not to get them killed in the process. The commander here is bloodthirsty, and thinks it is wise to fight the enemy in a face-to-face confrontation while in terrain perfect for guerrilla warfare... But so long as enemy casualties are double or triple ally casualties, I should be able to cover for that." With that being said, Vardreth hammered out the final details for retreating, should their forces need to, before adjourning the meeting.

After everyone acknowledged their orders they moved out and began preparing the soldiers for the operation.

Merrze would examine the small Lieutenant for a second. She was young, or at least seemed to be. She had no weapon with her, meaning she probably fought with her body, possibly even a beast since she was cavalry. The female official did seem impressive. Her stance and demeanor was that of one who was experienced at leading and combat. Merrze would give a small bow to the young girl. With a strong and kinda voice the fanalis would introduce herself. "Hello I Lieutenant Merrze, Merrze is my only name and I am the commander of these troops."

After the the introduction she would lead them inside of her command tent. The lioness would then inform Bhaozhai of her plan. "The current plan is to flank down from here to attack their forces. We're not many but we move fast and hit hard. We'll be able to stab through their forces hopefully and break through the castle. And even if noticed we can push out from inside their forces diving them up to have to defend two areas."

Taking a slight breath the fanalis would then continue. "If you have any information regarding where we should lead the attack through that would be good. I was waiting for information about our allies positioning and it would be sure for finding the best entry point to invade."

When the fire seemed to spiral out of control, Zadi felt the instinct to run away behind cover. However, in a special turn of events, the fire ended up becoming an ally to a degree; the fire encircled the swamp fortress and created a firewall the likes of which would slow down or even halt any attacking forces! Granted, the firewall was a double edged sword, too. Nothing comes in, nothing comes out. Unfortunately, given the location of this fortress being a swamp, gasses will more than likely escalate the situation towards a negative direction for Zadi in the near future. The size of the fire was simply too large to handle given the fortress' supplies and manpower; if an attack hit the fortress and the men were standing around, aimlessly putting out sections of fire, the fortress would fall as quick as Zadi occupied.

However, the special events for today haven't ended; the scouts returned and brought some troubling news. The blonde commander had too much to deal with now; a runaway saboteur, a firewall, an imminent siege, and swampy conditions. Zadi was having trouble focusing on any single problem and started to feel stress, irritated, and anxious, "Hold on, hold on! One problem at a time..." Zadi thought for a moment what single action could solve as many problems as possible in one fatal swoop, but nothing came to mind unfortunately, "How about...nope...but then, UUUUGH! Fuckin' dammit!" His troops looked towards the outburst made by Zadi; an outburst like this wouldn't bode well for moral and moral seemed to be all that was left. In a quick effort to douse the metaphorical flames of anxiety, Zadi came up with a seemingly brilliant plan.

"WAIT! We hide and wait. Just trust me on this one; we hide ourselves in key locations around and within this fortress, let the attackers come in, and then we strike!"

Zadi waited for some outcries, but given the state of this fortress and the underwhelming manpower, hiding and ambushing seemed like a legitimate strategy. This odd scheme working might not solve more than one problem nor even work to begin with, but this is all Zadi had to work with. Seemingly no outcries graced the silence within the fortress and so the blonde commander did what he felt was best and ordered his troops to hide.

"Alright men! Hide yourselves near the outer wall, the entrance, and within any crates we have available! We'll give our attacks the gift they deserve!"

As for Zadi the blonde commander, he decided against hiding himself; bait was needed to draw in the attackers, and what better bait than a pink kimono wearing, Balbadd native, blonde commander seemingly abandoned by his troops within a flame surrounded, swampy fortress? If the Zadi's troops followed orders and did so well, the fortress would look empty save for Zadi tied up in the middle of the courtyard with his weapons being handed to the nearest, hidden troops in crates. There were obvious flaws with lining the walls with hidden troops and leaving crates all over the place, but that's just how things may turn out if done right.

I hope I'm not picked off by some paranoid archer before anyone comes in...

NOIR ENCRYOLA ||| MERRZE ||| LAGI

Fu released her grip of the raven-haired magician’s hand, her arms now by her side as she stood and faced the woman. The question, that question, “what kind of work do you do with the soldiers?” A cold chill ran through the haggard woman’s spine as she clutched her body in shame.

“I do...I offer my, um, services to the soldiers...for a price…” The woman stammered, turning her gaze away from the woman and her liger. “Haku, that is a pretty name for such a beast...it sounds like the name of someone very dear to me,” There was something ominous in the way Fu relayed these messages. Her fear and anxiety were significantly dissipated, sure, but why? Was it the question? She was never one to answer truthfully about her profession--many years of being run out of towns or vilified as that woman only led her to steel herself to the judgments of others. For now, it was Fu’s duty to lead the magician to her village, that was all she could do, that was all that was possible at this time...her brother’s life depended on it.

“I was born here...this village. It was peaceful, for a time, until greedy noblemen discovered that we were a plentiful resource for young women,” Fu explained, leading the raven-haired magician through the forest. Fu’s clothes were much more apparent, much more noticeable now that she was walking. Her dress was tattered, as if it had seen years of use without any washes or proper stitching. Her hair was black and wet, but not wet from water, wet from natural oils pouring into her hair. It was clear she was kept hidden, a slave, it didn’t seem like she was properly washed either. Just who was this “Fu?” “I was taken years ago, and every month, if I did “my job,” they would let me see my brother. Once a month, I watched him grow and grow...and then those men. They...they took him to fight!” A madness crept into Fu’s expression for but a moment, before she pacified her rage and kept moving, her hands trembling, her skin crawling with tranquil fury.

“Here...we are here...where my brother is…” Fu explained, leading the raven-haired magician to a village, seemingly deserted. It appeared as life did not settle there for a while. “There. In that building. They told me if I didn’t...they told me if I didn’t do what I was told they would kill him…” She explained, pointing toward a building in the center of the village.

The other lieutenant would listen to the white lioness, thinking about her plan and the type of battle that they would soon be facing once their troops would set out. She thought about everything once her ally was done reporting everything she had to say about her plan and questions. She would look over the territory and map once more before she sighed lightly standing as tall as the short girl could and looked at the fanalis. "Well they have a force of Calvary, infantry, and we saw some guy who seemed to be of importance, we think he might be their head honcho." She said somehow full of cheer, but it was soon obvious as she talked, this is just how she was. "I think your plan could work very well though, but we might have to try and get the man we saw who seemed to be of importance, so if you agree we could make a flank, and split the forces, and if one of us takes care of the man it will be easier to attack the fort I believe." She said while rubbing the back of her head while nodding firmly with a pleasant smile, her demeanor was weird, she kept a pleasant smile, and a chipper town, but she did not seem ignorant to the ways of the world.

Once she was done informing her of the forces outside the fort, and the fact that they had no information on if the force was filled with more forces, or if it would be an easy win after they got inside of it. Soon after she made sure that she saw everything and Merrze said anything of importance to the plan to her. "Well we should get the forces ready, I myself am going to make sure that my men have eaten, and eaten and then I'm going to ensure Bongo is all ready, we got something new for him after all that I've been dying to hook up!" She said rather gleefully before taking a quick spin on her heels and beginning to walk out of the tent that they had been in. Outside it could easily be shown that some of the cavalry had began to talk and integrate with the fanalis' soldiers. Maybe this would lead to some higher morale, or better cooperation since they had been given some time to talk with one another, and let everyone get a small grasp of the situation. It was also seen now that some of the other members of the cavalry had their own, personal unique mounts to them. They were probably animals they had tamed before, or obtained because of unique status in the regiment.

Baozhai had done exactly as she had said and after checking in on her men, and socializing with some of the people who were under the command of the lioness that she would have left them all to go to the mock stables where her own mount was on his own. It was a unique creature, large, bipedal, and reptilian creature, it looked much to fearsome to be partnered up with a young female who was as cheerful as she was. Despite his fearsome look Bongo was rather cheerful as her master had approached and helped adjust his armor. Soon after she fed him quite a bit, and went to go look at her saddle for him. She idly spent her time before the battle making sure everything was alright with her beast, and not bothering to talk to anyone in the upcoming battle  Though if anyone would approach her she would interact.

Bongo:

As things were getting close soldiers began to get their equipment, or mounts ready for the fight, They would loosely get into their groups, but in general also staying close to their own allies. They were also waiting to see if their commanders wanted to rearrange them, or make them get into specific orders. They would simply chat, and converse waiting for the moment for them to be commanded and told that they would be going to battle.

From the head of commands of the group came a message to the underlying bosses that were beneath him. The time to plunge head first into their mission was upon them. There was no more waiting nor could they stall by "preparing". They only had one option, and that was to begin their march and infiltrate the ravine. Whether they succeeded or not depended largely on how well Commander Xu led his men and how well his troops fared beneath him.

The groups were organized into the planned formation, horns blasting to mark the beginning of their strike into Gao's territory. Lagi would find himself by the head of the troops, his platoon just yards behind his temporary leader.

Almost immediately, Commander Xu's men found themselves plunged into the shallow river that marked the area. They found themselves wading through green waters that reached their knees and mud that clung to the soles of their boots. The river barely moved, its waters still from the muck that had long turned it into swamp land. Algae would push against the soldiers, sticking to their form while vines that hung from the trees tried to ensnare them.

It only got worse as they crawled deeper. They heard the hissing before they saw the danger. Out from between the vines struck out vipers, their tails tied cruelly to the branches of overhanging trees. They were situated in such a way that it would be easy for them to lunge anything at the eye-level of a human. There was no telling how long they had been stuck to the trees, starving for whatever time they were trapped. One such snake suddenly dropped out, lashing out at Lagi. Its jaws were stretched wide in preparation to stab its long fangs into the man's face. Around him, other men fell victim to the trap, flailing and writhing as those who were left unharmed sought to free them. Even Commander Xu ducked out of the way of a swinging snake, narrowly avoiding its wrath as it swung from the branches. It quickly became apparent that those bitten were falling under the effects of the venom of the snake. An order was given to leave those who were caught behind in order to progress.

Gao's men did not intend to make it easy on the invaders, but that wouldn't mean that Xu would give up. If Lagi avoided the swinging trap, he would be moved to the head of the formation with the rest of the soldiers that made up his squadron. It would only become even more dangerous from there, as he would be the first to encounter any traps laid in their path.

ZADI ||| VARDRETH

At first the sounds that the blonde commander was making had indeed caused a bit of confusion amongst them and made the troops loose a bit faith in him and this situation they were faced with at the time period. They were in confusion and they weren't really sure what to do, especially since there was a spinning whirl of fire that was moving through the greenery of the swamp, and starting to drifting closer towards the areas where there was more pockets of flammable gas, and plenty of flora. Soon enough as the commander finally began to give them some sort of direction they became completely confused for a moment as they began to listen what he had to say. They were still, and silent as they listened to the plan that he had come up with, it definitely being  a unique one that could work  if they were to be raided completely by the forces.

For a few moments after they had listened to everything that he had to say to them, the explanation of his plan made a bit of sense to them all and they began to discuss it for a moment as they had finished taking care of the rest of the internal fortress fire. Their sporadic thoughts began to calm, and become more thought out than they were before. Some of them talked to one another for a small moment before they would began to idly shift about and began to organize themselves. Soon enough they would start to move en masse towards their own individual, and group hiding spots. It wouldn't take too long, but soon enough all the soldiers would be hidden, and waiting to be given a command, or a signal from one of the commanding officers to leave their hiding spots.  It would soon get completely quiet and there wasn't a single sound besides that of the burning swamp, and sounds of the animals that were hiding and scattering about in anguish and fear.

It would stay quiet for a long period of time, no doubt the enemy soldiers were a bit behind because of the swamp and the amount of confusion there must be from the natural disaster that was going on at the moment, despite being a natural disaster that had been caused by the unnatural fire pillar, and Zadi's interactions. As the silence and emptiness began to fill the area, and the soldiers in hiding were either getting comfy, or uncomfortable depending on where they were hiding in the fortress. Soon enough the silence was cut short, by the scout commander who Zadi had already been informed would be coming back. He was handsome, and seemed to be around the same age as Zadi. He looked around for a moment before he saw the blonde commander and ran over to him. He had a few small cuts, but was able to make it back to their base mostly unharmed. He was confused for a moment as he began to run over to the blonde commander. he gave a simple salute before stopping himself. "I'm not sure where everyone is, or what's going on but we need to get ready to defend, or we might get overrun." The scout commander was strong, and would most likely fight along the side of the blonde commander, but he wanted to make sure that the commander had some sort of plan. "Oh and i'm scout commander Liqin."

Commander Liqin:

During the talk with the scout commander the fire whirl had continued along its path as the time had continued, and soon enough the whirl hit a large gas pocket. It was soon that the large bubble of gas bursted and bloomed into a colossal twirling flower of red and orange that burned and made the air crackle a bit. The  explosion would be visible as it went into the sky like a spiral before burning away in the air. The the explosion that went outwards would only continue, and became more treacherous as it expanded outwards and began to consume the foliage that it had became blanketed atop of. Soon enough the fire would began to grow as it started to spread through the swamp and escalate from a small incident to a large scale disaster. The fire was beginning to engulf a part of the swamp, and spread as long as it had gases and foliage to consume. It was a horrifying disaster, but to some it was a situation that could be seen as powerful, terrifying, and beautiful all at the same time.

The small brown sparrow from earlier still cleaned itself, but when another of its kind sung a tune, it responded in turn, followed by a series of more songs echoing faintly through the ravine, through the heavy downpour of rain and claps of thunder all but drowned the singing of the sparrows. The chain of chirping, which lasted a couple of minutes, led through the ravine until it halted with a single brown sparrow perched on a low hanging branch above a hooded figure standing a couple of yards away from a small army.

The person, tall yet lanky, nodded, as if understanding the chirps of the birds. They waved over a couple of men, both muscular, but one was bald and wore shiny silver armor, he had narrow eyes, making his expression stern in contrast with the other man, who wore little armor and had black facial hair. They both looked down at the figure, waiting before she moved. Her hand reached into her sleeve and pulled out a wand and a solitary feather. She then whispered to the rukh, waving her wand in a circular fashion until an image of light appeared.

The figure used clairvoyance magic, light magic, and sound magic to play back a scene from a camp, the very camp where a seemingly uninvolved bird watched with keen eyes as Vardreth gave orders to his men. The scene played fast, and only lasted until the orders had been given before cutting off abruptly. “They’re on the move. Their leader, though young in appearance, is quite the strategist… So young yet commands so many… Eight platoons, each designated with a task. You’ll need to be careful…” The voice was soft, light as a feather and feminine in nature. “Here’s what I suggest…”

-------
A handful of soldiers, comprised of rangers, beast tamers, and magicians, made their way towards Vardreth's ambush position. To Vardreth's men, there would be two black masses approaching, one right above the canopy of the trees and the other on the ground, though Vardreth's men would be unable to tell what the dark blob was until it got closer. There was buzzing, the flapping of wings, and the dimensions shifted ever so slightly, revealing the air mass to be a flock of crows swooping down and the ground mass to be a swarm of mosquitoes, commanded by a few beast tamers, and eventually covered a wide area, buzzing furiously in the canopy as birds dived from above. The mosquito swarm served as a cover and a distraction as rangers positioned themselves in hollowed out fallen trunks and mud holes, magicians used gravity magic to cause the earthy overhangs to crumble away, and beast tamers commanded snakes of all sizes, from black swamp snakes to pythons, to slither up the trees and rocks in search of Vardreth’s men. From there, if any were found, the pythons would wrap themselves around the enemy and squeeze. While Vardreth’s men were preoccupied by the snakes and swarm of mosquitoes, rangers would keep an eye out for movement in the trees and the surrounding area, in case there were any other surprise attacks. Meanwhile, as Vardreth’s ambush group began to see trouble with mother nature’s creatures, the men in charge of disabling any potential traps ran into their own set of problems.

The traps set were many and complex, many of which would activate if another trap were to be deactivated. Yet there, in the shadows, waited magicians and warriors, hiding with the help of illusion magic and ready to ambush. As Vardreth’s men worked, the magician’s cast a spell that caused the fog to be more dense and cast more spells to freeze the water around the enemy's legs and sometimes even arms as they searched the murky water, encasing the lower half of their body in ice or the mud on which they stood to sink, pulling them into the ground.

Meanwhile, the magician from earlier used her clairvoyance magic to keep an eye on Vardreth in the command camp, watching, along with the two other men.

She would continue the discussion "That sounds fine to me, we should make sure our forces are gathered properly. Most of my warriors are close ranged and fast. I have a small group of archers who are good but they will have to probably group with yours. Your most mobile should follow me and we can lead them into battle. The best option is to strike fast and hard." She would stop for a second before switching to a more cheerful tone. "Besides all that its a pleasure to meet you, most of my troops have already eaten and are mostly setting up the medical tents. I have some already gathered and prepared to strike whenever. I hope that you will join me in the front. With this beast of yours I'm sure we can catch them off guard."

The white haired woman would strut out of the tent showing the female general around. Merrze herself would begin gathering the troops for the oncoming onslaught. The majority would be stationed in the lead, while the archers would be near the back and the sides of the forces. She would be going over various formations while they prepared. One of the ones she had practiced the most was the lion. Where her archers hid inside the forces firing arrows while they then open up and close in on the enemies, trapping them in a wave of arrows. The fanalis had hoped that she would get the chance to try it out.

The way that the girl reacted after Noir asked what kind of service that she offered to the soldier made the magician halted herself, her golden eyes were locking themselves to Fu’s eyes. She had been through the worst kind of slavery... and she had no way to defend herself because those wretched men used her brother as the bargaining goods. “I understand.” Noir said to the girl, implying her to not say anything further about what she did with the soldiers, knowing how traumatic her job would be. Noir smiled a little when Fu distracted the topic, mentioning how pretty Haku’s name was. It was the black haired girl herself who gave the name to the beast after they formed a bond, “What a coincidence, because Haku is very dear to me as well.”

Fu’s condition at the moment reminded Noir of her past, she remembered that time where she kept wearing the same clothes over and over again, not having any spare clothes to change into. There was no way to wash it either becuse at the slave ship where she was being kept, she was not allowed to go out from her cabin at all to get clean water. Her hair was also wet from oil and her body was covered with salt. “Miss Fu, I was a slave as well before, perhaps a different kind but... since i dont have anything to defend... I broke my way out from the slavery to start a new life. Perhaps it is fate who brings me to you, so I can help you and give you freedom.” She paused for a bit as she looked down, “Do they make your brother to fight as a gladiator? Gambling their own life?”

When they arrived at the village, Noir would quietly look around and Haku would also be in guard as he sniffed the air, wanting to know if there was someone near. It seemed deserted indeed, as if no life inhabited this place for a long time. “The villagers... are they hiding? And the people who forced you and your brother into this... they are inside that building?” Noir would wait for Fu to answer her question, wanting to know the situation first before she decided to take action. “Haku, stay on your guard...” She would then say to her liger as she put herself on guard as well.

The fire raged on in the background as Zadi and the troops of the swamp fortress executed the blonde commander's Reverse Trojan Horse plan. The actual "Trojan Horse" does not exist within this universe, but the concept certainly exists! Hopefully everything would go smoothly with little to no bloodshed. After all, if this plan did work, the enemy would be surrounded in an instant, unable to leave without sacrificing many of their forces. Surrender in such a situation seemed optimal, in Zadi's perspective at least. However, with Zadi being loosely tied up in the middle of the courtyard of the fortress, the scout commander returning was rather awkward. Nonetheless, the scout commander seemed composed enough to introduce himself and not cause a scene, but Zadi decided to signal a false alarm, just in case some of the other soldiers hiding didn't understand. Moving the loose gag out of his mouth using his tonge and wiggling out of the equally loose ropes keeping his arms tied behind his back, Zadi freed himself and yelled out to his troops.

"FALSE ALARM! KEEP HIDDEN UNTIL I GIVE THE KEY WORD!"

Zadi then stood up asked Liqin some necessary questions, "Welcome back, what news do you have concerning your attackers and Yoshiro's forces? Oh, heheh...I better explain this odd situation to you first." And so Zadi explain what needed to be explain about the Reverse Trojan Horse plan; troops hiding through the fortress while Zadi is used as bait with the hopes of luring in the enemy and catching said enemy off guard. Zadi then informed Liqin of the key word spoken of earlier, "which is surprise. If I use the word surprise in any sort of way, that's the signal to corner the enemy. Upon surrounding the enemy we either force negotiations or attack. So then, ask I asked earlier, what news do you have?" Zadi made sure to whisper the key word so as not to cause the troops to come out early.
