Job Details:

With Kou inching their way into Reim territory, Ayero had been sent out to evaluate some of the port towns along the coast of Reim. They were smaller towns that didn’t have much, subsisting off of fishing and occasionally trade. Most of the towns appeared to be doing well for the time being, but one in particular had fallen on tough times. Most of the people had been friendly towards her in the others town, but in this particular one the people seemed skittish. No one stayed out past dark either, hurrying towards their homes with nervous steps when the sun would begin to set.

While it wasn’t exactly odd for a small town to slow down at night, this place was different. Not even the local tavern would stay open past dark, and the inn was nearly empty. ”Strange…it’s almost like people here are afraid of something?” While she understood the looming threat of Kou, the eastern country had not yet reached their borders an there was no need to be in this much of a panic yet. Curiosity got the best of her as she headed back to the inn after surveying the town for the day. The sun dipped beyond the horizon as she walked, children kicking up dust on the dirt roads as they hurried to get indoors before it became dark, lest they be scolded by their mothers.

”Hey, kid. What’s going on? Why is everyone staying indoors at night?” The Fanalis woman had grabbed one of the kids by the shoulder as he attempted to speed past her, her hold firm enough to get his attention but not hard enough to cause pain. Startled, the child looked up at her with apprehension in his eye. He glanced around nervously, afraid that his mother would yell at him again for staying out past dark. ”It’s that, miss.” the boy pointed exaggeratedly towards a small cluster of caves in the distance near the shore. ”People go in, but they don’t come back out…if you get too close, you can hear ‘em screamin’. My mom says I’m not supposed to be out at night or else the ghosts that live in the cave will come an’ get me, so could you please let me go before I get into trouble?” The boy seemed understandably hurried, and Ayero nodded before letting him go back on his way. Turning her eyes to the network of caves near the shore, she narrowed her eyes and made her way towards them.

Bahir

Bahir was sitting alone in a tavern outside of Remano. The fanalis wanted to take a break from the constant training and preparation for the skirmishes with Kou soldiers and figured this quiet town would be the ideal place to get it. Unfortunately, he couldn't have been more wrong. Although there wasn't a threat from a foreign enemy of across the sea, there was a foreign threat present... one of another realm it seemed. The land of the dead. Although, Bahir didn't know of these terrors yet. He stayed and enjoyed his warm cup of tea. He received a few weird looks when he ordered it, but he didn't pay them any mind. Instead, he sat there with his hood drawn to cover most of his face. The cloth of his cloak raised enough to cover the lower half of his face, as well. Tonight, he wasn't Bahir. He was a fictional being that was created, the creator just-so-happened to be himself.

The young fanalis's ears perked as he heard a light set of footsteps heading towards him. Just great... He mentally scorned as he turned his head to look over his shoulder, his crimson eyes seeming to bore into the person's soul. Bahir quickly looked the person over and acknowledged that his presence wasn't hostile. Once he was assured of this, Bahir turned his head back around and took another sip of his tea. "Can I help you?" his hushed voice seemed to travel into the man's ears and was immediately followed by a quick movement for the man to sit across from Bahir.

Bahir looked up at the man and raised an intrigued eyebrow. Before he could speak again, the man spoke up and reached out to the Fanalis. "Sir. You fit the description. Are you the man known as Shadow?" Bahir stayed silent. His eyes continuing to bear down upon the man. After a moment of silence, Bahir nodded his head slowly and the man let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness! Your eyes are needed by my village. There has been happenings lately that have us all worried for our lives! There have been multiple people who have gone into the cave and haven't come back out. Please go and check it out..." The man's face reflected his pleading. Desperation was written all over it. Bahir tried his best to retain his cold exterior and looked back to his cup of tea and drank a bit more of it. Shadow... Shadow is a man of business. A few tears isn't enough to sway him.. He reminded himself. Without even looking back at the man, Bahir spoke up: "I can traverse this cave of yours... for a price."

Bahir didn't have to say much before the man dug into his pocket and pulled out a stack of Huang. Bahir's eyebrow arched and he tilted his head, seeing the stack. "Impressive. Very well. I'll check out your cave tomorrow... now leave." The man nodded and walked out of the tavern, meeting some family and somewhat celebrating. What in the world am I getting myself in to... Bahir pondered as he stuffed the Huang into his bag.

The next day, Bahir arrived in the town and started to begin his scouting. He spoke with a great variety of people, from simple civilians going about their day on the streets to store vendors who had to close shop earlier nowadays. All of the clues Bahir found, were nowhere near as helpful as he was hoping. Looks like I'll just actually have to go cave diving.. he thought as he headed back to his room in the tavern. He reawoke when night fell. It was time for him to begin the real part of his job.

As he left the tavern, he noticed a woman with red hair stopping a kid. His eyes narrowed as he focused in on the woman's frame and instantly figured out why the image looked so familiar. It was Ayero, the first person he met while in Reim. She also happened to be a soldier of the resistance as well. Maybe this won't be nearly as much of a drag now that she's hear. He stayed in the shadows with his hood pulled up, listening in on the conversation she was having with the younger boy. So... that's what I'm here for.

The fanalis emerged from his hiding spot as the kid ran off and pulled down his hood. He approached the female fanalis from the side and spoke up, sounding a bit excited. "Ayero! Hey is that you?! What are you doing here?" He was a bit surprised with how well his words came out while he was speaking with her. Perhaps he was starting to become comfortable with the woman and was able to speak, MOSTLY, fluidly while around her. The majority of her skin wasn't visible to Bahir at the moment so this was the best he would sound for a while..

Ayero wasn’t aware of the man watching from the shadows, not that she would have had much of a chance to detect his presence otherwise. As the child took off down the street back towards his home, Ayero was nearly startled as a voice called her name. Pivoting on her heel, Ayero’s cloak swished around her body as she turned to face the stranger, hand reflexively moving towards her left hip. Her face reflects cautious surprise before melting into an expression of more amicable surprise when she recognizes the other Fanalis. ”Bahir? Is that you? What are you doing all the way out here…?” She pauses when she realized that he had posed the same question first.

”I came out here after hearing that there was some sort of trouble with people disappearing into caves.” She stops to give the young man a thoughtful once-over, as if assessing his battle ability. ”You wouldn’t happen to be out here for the same reason, would you?” Her voice takes on a more curious lit as she folds her arms over her chest. It had been a while since she had seen the other Fanalis and she recalls their first meeting in the city.

Her reaction was a bit more... accepting than he expected. He could tell from their first encounter that the woman was a very cautious being. He was honestly expecting to be mere centimeters from the tip of her blade when she turned around to face him. However, she drew no weapon and instead gave only a suspicious glance at first. Thank goodness...Uh.. He blinked as the woman's face became more familial and she put her hand on her hip. The young fanalis could feel some word tripping coming in the future, but decided to fight it to the best of his abilities. Knowing his recent amount of luck, she would have full clothing or armor beneath her cloak and he wouldn't be too exposed to cause him to blabber like an idiot.

He nodded quietly and quickly to her question. They were called to this place for the exact same reason. Whether it was a good reason or not was yet to be seen, but rest assured they could work together. "Yes.. I'm here for that cave, as well. Some old man came and hi--" Bahir felt himself start to slip and instantly cut himself off. Dammit... she's gonna notice that. Gotta play it off... I got it! Bahir stared towards the cave as if he heard a strange sound coming from it. Of course, he didn't hear anything. However, he needed to make some sort of distraction for the female warrior in front of him. Even though Ayero was the closest person to Bahir in Reim, he couldn't let her know of his secret life... not yet, anyway. He actually wanted friends and he could only imagine that letting her know that he was an assassin and spy would put a damper on whatever friendship they held.

It was before long that... Bahir started to fool himself into thinking sound was coming from the cave. At least, that's what he had hoped was happening. He accepted the job not believing an ounce of the cave being anything too out of the ordinary. As far as he was concerned, the people in the town were just suspicious and danger prone. However, the slightly muffled screaming that his ears picked up on caused him to second guess himself. "Do... do we want to go and check that noise out? Your ears are as good as mine, so you had to hear it right?"

Ayero turned towards Bahir, giving the other Fanalis her full attention. She hadn’t run into him for quite some time and was truly surprised to see him somewhere so far off the beaten path. As he explained that he’d come to this town for the same reason as she, Ayero nodded in understanding. She didn’t comment when Bahir suddenly cut himself off, quirking a brow in response but otherwise not pressing into it. She wondered what it was that the younger Fanalis did for a living that would bring him here. Perhaps he was somewhat of a mercenary as well? Before her train of thought could get too far, the shrouded Fanalis man began to move towards the cave, posture alert as if he had detected some sort of movement or sound in the cave’s direction.

”You heard a noise?” A trickle of surprise was present in her tone as she stepped forward, squinting into the distance towards the cave as if it would help sharpen her hearing. She had come to this port town figuring that there were simply bandits running amok in the night causing mischief, the townspeople’s imaginations turning it into something more wild. But so far things had been peaceful. Cocking her head to the side, Ayero strains to pick up the same faint screams Bahir had heard. She frowns, wondering if her own mind had created the sound in desperation to hear something that would make all of the stories she’d heard make sense. ”Only one way to find out.” She jerks her head in the direction of the cave and begins walking, interest now piqued even more.

As the entered the mouth of the cave, Ayero held the lit torch she’d procured earlier from one of the dock hands. ”I haven’t seen you in a while, Bahir. I never got a chance to thank you for the gift.” Ayero recalled the topaz bracelet the young man had left in his wake for her as a gift for showing him around Remano. In truth she didn’t wear that often, as pretty as she thought it was. She didn’t own many nice things, knowing that she’d either break or lose them with her lifestyle. But she still kept the bracelet with her, tucked safely away and out of sight. ”How did you find Remano? You first day was pretty exciting, meeting the King and all…”

A sudden clatter of movement in front of them causes her to pause and swing the torch in front of her, free hand traveling to her left hip where her sword hung. ”What…the hell are those?” Ayero inched closer so that the light of the torch would reach further, revealing the outline of several very tall bodies. Her eyes widened when she grasped that they were men, and a few moments of inspection pass by before she realizes that they had been silent this whole time.

”Who are you? Do you need help?” She glances toward Bahir before moving her gaze back to the men, the scant light obscuring their features. No verbal reply came, only the sound of swords being unsheathed and the scraping sound of dragging feet as the men drew closer. Ayero reflexively took a step back, her eyes widening as the Undead Soldiers came fully into view, their zombie-like features now apparent. Instinctively, the Fanalis woman drew her blade as her eyes hardened in anticipation of the incoming battle.

A feeling of relief washed over the young fanalis as Ayero caught the sound in her ear, as well. The distraction was enough for them to change the subject and move to what they were both here for: the mystery within the cave. He was a bit surprised at her delayed reaction to the sounds though. Perhaps her senses weren't as heightened as Bahir's due to her being only a half-bred Fanalis? The thought puzzled him and almost made his lose track of what was going on. Before he knew it, Ayero was moving towards the cave, snapping Bahir from his thoughts. The young spy caught up with his partner and kept his eyes peeled throughout the cave, looking and listening for any signs of life.

It wasn't long before the silence wore on both of the fanalis' nerves. Ayero spoke up, being the one to break the silence between the two. Bahir's cheeks started to redden a bit at the mention of the gift he bought her his first day in Reim. He had almost forgotten that he purchased that for her. It was a bit more expensive than he thought it would be, and he almost couldn't believe that he could buy that and survive the next few days like he did. "I-it was a problem. I MEAN! It WASN'T a problem!" the young man was doing so good until then. He groaned and smacked himself on the forehead. If she didn't see it, she would sure be able to hear it! He shook off his embarrassment and sighed, getting back on topic. "W-well... meeting the King was interesting... I couldn't understand some of his policies or things he wanted. I was just a little overwhelmed with meeting such an important figure, I suppose.." Bahir tried to play his thoughts of the King off. He didn't agree with the substitution of people doing jobs with beasts. He figured it would make the people of Remano soft and even cause some of the families to sink into a poverty without the income. Either way, he was sure that the plans had more long term balances to keep that from happening. He just knew that what he heard that day wasn't satisfying.

"Oh finding Remano wasn't that difficult. I went there a few times as a child." Another slip. The fanalis told the woman that it was his first day there before, and now this? The war had gotten to him. At least... that's what he could only hope. He was banking on the fact that she wouldn't pay much attention to it, like she did before, until he heard the shuffling of feet and the sound of swords dragging across the ground. The sound drew all of the spy's attention and he halted in his steps. What... what on earth?! The figures came into view slowly. Its eyes held no sign of life, but it was an animated body moving towards them. Their presence didn't sit well with Bahir one bit...

"Don't be alarmed... I'm still here..." Bahir's words were hushed, meaning them only for Ayero to hear as he stepped backwards and out of the light of her torch. He began to blend into the darkness of his cave using his Shadow Blend and his Feather Foot for good measure to keep from drawing their attention. Thanks to Ayero's torch, the assassin could still make sure that he is not in danger of being hit by Ayero and vice versa, but still able to see a few of the enemies as well. He grinned at such an opportune situation and eyed his first pair of targets. He figured that the "men" weren't going to reason with the two fanalis, so he reached for the handle of his dagger. Instead of drawing the blade, he pulled, from the handle, two throwing spikes and threw them at two of the zombies, aiming between their eyes. The two spikes flew over Ayero's shoulders at 10m/s, hitting true to their targets. He could only hope that Ayero wouldn't be too taken aback by the falling assailants. He was going to be her support in this confrontation..

Ayero suppressed a chuckle as Bahir began mixing his words, not wanting to embarrass the young man further by pointing it out. She nods absently when he recounts their impromptu dinner with the King, understanding his feelings for the situation. When Bahir mentioned that he’d been to Remano as a child, a light of curiosity flickered in Ayero’s eyes. Something about the statement didn’t quite feel right…didn’t he say something about their first meeting being his first time in the city? The thought was quickly brushed away by the appearance of the cave’s inhabitants.

Ayero’s gaze was locked on the approaching enemies, too concentrated on the danger in front of them to notice Bahir sliding back into the shadows. Suddenly, a pair of spikes whizzed over her shoulders at an alarming speed, embedding themselves into the two closest zombies. The pair of undead soldiers didn’t see the attack coming, the force of the metal rocketing into their skulls sending them backwards. This created an opening for Ayero, the Fanalis woman pushing off of her heel and heading for the three remaining soldiers. The two closest to her saw her coming, both soldiers leapt into the air and raised their swords in preparation for dealing Swords of Death. Bringing her own blade to the side, Ayero performed a Pinwheel Blade, spinning in time to catch the two enemy blades. The power behind her attack was far greater than that of the soldier’s, her sword not only blocking their strikes but dealing sharp slice wounds across their chests.

Spinning around, Ayero attempts to deal a slash to the remaining soldier, but her blade clashes with his Sword Block. Grunting as her blade is parried away, Ayero drops her center of gravity and sweeps her leg low to the ground, knocking the undead soldier’s feet out from under him while maintaining her hold on the torch. Wasting no time, the Fanalis woman lurches forward and delivers a quick jab to the man’s stomach, gurgles and grunts of pain emanating from his mouth as she withdrew her blade.

Straightening herself out, Ayero stands and peers around cautiously, her gaze sweeping over the twitching bodies that littered the cave floor. ”Well that was…strange.” Ayero half-turns towards Bahir, about to say something when muffled cries sound in the distance. ”…throwing spikes, huh? Not bad, you’ve got good aim. We should go check that out.” She tilts her head further into the cave, giving the man a look of curiosity.

Bahir watched as the two zombies were struck true by his spikes. He stood back in the shadows and watched in silent awe as Ayero downed the remaining three soldiers that approached them. The assassin was taken aback by how easy it seemed for her. Is there truly THAT big of a gap between Ayero and I? he thought to himself, reflecting on her strength. The fanalis male shook the thoughts from his head as he approached her slowly. As she turned to face him, he stepped into the light of her torch and gave a coy smile. "Th-thanks! I've been working on my aim a little lately. After these last few skirmishes with the Kou soldiers I figured I'd make myself more useful on the battlefield, y'know? But you! You swept through them like they were nothing!"

After he spoke, he heard the muffled cry that had seemed to draw Ayero's attention as well. He nodded to her advising to check out the sound and he started to move in the direction that it came from. He was pretty confident that they wouldn't be taken too far by surprise. However, the possibility of danger caused the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. He wasn't used to this feeling and... in all reality... he relished it. There haven't been many times when the thought of being taken by surprise was something Bahir would have to endure. It was usually the other way around. The darkness of this cave, however, caused him to feel what his "targets" must have felt. It was a truly humbling experience.

As he made a little further into the cave, he noticed a small green light. The fanalis didn't trust it and instinctively put his hand on his sanjiegun, proceeding cautiously. As he expected, the light started getting larger and he stopped in his tracks. Even though his movement ceased, the light was getting larger. The spy didn't know what else to do, other than started to unfold his weapon and use his stick spin. There was no better time for him to do so, either. As soon as his stick started to spin, he felt a bit of momentary resistance and the green light disappeared. It was an Arrow of Death. It wasn't long before there was another green light approaching him, but it was swatted away again by the triple stick. "...I don't think I'll be able to get close..." His words were more towards Ayero than anything.

”Ah…” Not expecting the compliment, Ayero rubs the back of her neck with her free hand, a light grin tugging at her lips. ”I’ve had a lot of practice, especially when it comes to taking out other swordsman. But usually my opponents are more…alive?” Ayero trailed as she thought of the strange zombie-like enemies they had faced, unable to exactly pin why they seemed off. There wasn’t much time to consider the Undead Soldiers as the sound of another faint scream pricked Ayero’s ears.

”The fight went well, thanks to your quick thinking and good throwing arm. I don’t recall you mentioning being skilled with a weapon during our last meeting.” Ayero’s tone is more curious than accusatory, though she doesn’t dismiss the thought that Bahir could have simply followed along with her in order to harm her. She wanted to believe that he had no ill intent, but kept her guard up regardless, not for him but for any more potential danger they may cross paths with.

As the pair of Fanalis continue to move deeper into the cave, their keen eyes detect a small green light heading towards them. Ayero instinctively falls into a wider stance, blade raised at the ready to intercept the light. But Bahir beats her to the punch, knocking away the glowing arrow as it came within range. The Fanalis woman keeps her eyes focused forward in the distance where the projectiles had come from as Bahir whispers to her, chewing on her lower lip for a brief moment in contemplation.

”Then I’ll get close and draw their fire. That way you can take them out from the shadows, yes?” Should Bahir agree, Ayero would charge into the darkness with only a brief second thought to keep her sword raised at the ready, her other hand holding the torch. The warrior woman was used to charging headfirst into battle, but usually not towards archers. Despite her speed, ranged weapon users had the upper hand on close combat specialists such as herself. Especially when she couldn’t even see said archers.

Another green glow sailed through the air and Ayero Parried away the Arrow of Death with her blade, grunting as another two were launched at the same time from two different points in the distance. Ayero blocked a second Arrow of Death with her blade, noting that the other arrow seemed to stray towards Bahir. The swordswoman trusted the other Fanalis to be able to deflect or dodge the arrow on his own with his quick, practiced movements. Just as Ayero was close enough to make out the silhouettes of both archers, another figure appeared in between the two undead warriors.

With a Roar of Death, the Undead Captain releases a sound wave from his mouth and forces Ayero back 5 meters, immediately using Flash Step to speed towards the intruder with his sword raised…

Bahir was only able to register what it was that Ayero said to him, when the woman dashed forward. Bahir didn't drop a beat, hooked his triple stick back to his hip, drew his Shadow's Fang, and followed a little ways behind her, just so his person was outside of the glow of her torch. Just then, in the distance, the fanalis was able to see two more green arrowheads rise and stay in one position for a moment. His eyes widened, realizing that they were taking aim at Ayero and he drew four more of his throwing spikes. Make this count! He thought to himself as he launched the first two, timing them to where they would pass Ayero immediately after her first parry. They were aimed for for the Archer's neck and ribs. Bahir had an understanding of how the majority of archers stood when they fired, so he took the sideways stance into account. He proceeded to do the same towards the second light that trailing towards Ayero, timing and aiming his throws just as before, after her parry. He was careful that the redheaded woman wasn't being hit by his darts.

As he was about to relax from the teamwork, Bahir noticed a third light zooming towards him. Quickly lowered his body into a runner's starting position, and almost immediately, he was gone. The fanalis was moving at a ridiculous 25m/s, using his Shadow's Strike Mk. I. Using his great speed boost, Bahir dodged the arrow, passed Ayero, almost causing her torch to go out, and moved towards the spot the dot came from. He held the blade of his knife out as he continued forward until he met a gentle resistance that he recognized as flesh. Once he was met with this, he pushed through it. After hearing the body fall, Bahir turned back around and noticed another creature, that produced a sound that caused Bahir to stumble a few meters backwards from it, even though he was behind it now. When he reopened his eyes, he noticed the creatures moving towards Ayero. Bahir didn't waste any time and took four more spikes, dipping them into his knife's scabbard and then threw them at the creature. The poison soaked throwing spikes would cause the creature to move at half of his previous speed. The creatures was struck in his sword arm once, and in his back twice. The fourth spike hit the ground in front of the creature.

Ayero grunted as she was forced back by the Undead Captain’s eerie scream, raising her arms in an X in front of her to try and lessen the effects of the sound wave. Just after the shout was released, the sword wielding zombie dashed at her at an incredible speed at the same time Bahir passed her. The torch she held was almost snuffed by the blinding speeds of both men, and Ayero had already lost track of the other Fanalis. She was focused too focused on her own enemy to worry about Bahir, hoping that he would be able to handle whatever else lurked in the cave.

The Undead Captain charged at Ayero, raising his blade and bringing it down across the Fanalis woman’s sword arm in a Steel of Ice. The rapid attack cause a direct hit on Ayero’s right arm, encasing the limb in ice and leaving it useless. The Fanalis warrior grunted again in irritation at the heavy ice weighing down her arm, annoyed but not deterred. She sent a High Kick upwards into her opponent’s side, causing the Captain to stumble backwards. Suddenly, a green glow engulfed the zombie’s blade and he brought it down on the Fanalis woman in a Green Glisdr.

Reacting quickly, Ayero swept her other leg upwards and met the man’s blade with her Thighs of Steel, effectively blocking the blade from harming her. As soon as the sword met the metal of her armor, the Fanalis woman lunged forward and slammed her fist into the captain’s head using a Dizzy Punch. Howling in pain, the body of the zombie crumpled to the floor in defeat.

Catching her breath, Ayero paused when she realized that she had dropped the torch during their skirmish. For a moment it was silent, the screams and the groans of the zombies had diminished. Frantically picking up the torch from the ground which was thankfully still burning, albeit dimly, Ayero turned back and forth before finally catching sight of Bahir.

The Fanalis woman took in a breath as if to say something then pause, peering around to see the bodies of the three archers Bahir had managed to take out. ”Huh. You’re even more skilled than I thought.” The woman quirked a brow, the gears in her mind beginning to turn causing her to feel a bit more wary of being in such close proximity to someone with such hidden skills. ”Are you alright, Bahir?”

Almost immediately after Bahir threw his spikes at the zombie, he felt his body give out from the strain he put it under to move as quickly as he did. The adrenaline that filled the fanalis assassin started to fade and the strength and energy in him went with it. He found himself on the ground almost immediately. He was lucky enough that he plopped down in a place where his back was against a large rock. He panted heavily as he listened to the sounds of combat between Ayero and the final zombie. I hope everything turns out okay... I feel useless now.. He thought to himself as his legs started to go numb. He closed his eyes slowly, trying to give himself a chance to rest.

Not too much longer, the cave was silent again. But then.. foot steps. Bahir's ears twitched at the sound of someone moving. They were rather slow so he didn't know whether it was Ayero or the zombie... At this point, Bahir could barely lift his arms, let alone get up to defend himself. His heart started to beat harder Fuck fuck... No. No, I'm sure Ayero came out on top. She beat that Decimus guy... it would take much more to knock her down. He assured himself. It wasn't long before his worry was eased. The warmth of the torch could be felt and the sound of Ayero's voice relaxed the fanalis.

When he was complimented, Bahir chuckled a little. "Heh.. my 'skills' are way too rusty. My father would be ashamed that I was worn out so quickly..." The thought of keeping things about himself concealed was far out of his mind now. The young spy was barely able to keep his eyes open, let alone think to keep his secrets. When she asked if he was alright, Bahir lifted his face towards the warmth of the torch and tried to open his eyes to look at her. While his eyes were open, the fanalis could barely see. The whites of his eyes were bloodshot and his vision was fuzzy. "I'm... I'm fine. Are you okay? I didn't hit you did I? Those darts were coated in poison... I hope you didn't get hit... I'd never be able to forgive myself." Bahir's words were almost slurred together. It was almost like he was drugged! The fact that he couldn't keep his eyes open, blinking for prolonged periods, didn't help either.

”Your father?” Her eyes narrowed in thought as she recalled their first meeting, the younger Fanalis mentioning how he was searching for his father. Ayero wondered if the two had a chance to reunite yet or if they were still separated. The woman raised her brows in surprise when Bahir expressed concern over striking her with his needles. ”No, you didn’t hit me. You’ve got pretty good aim, to avoid striking me when I was moving around so much. That or it was just sheer luck.”

Chuckling shortly, Ayero moved the torch closer so that more light could spill over Bahir’s form. Recognizing the telltale signs of exhaustion, she sighed to herself before stopping down to heft the larger body onto her back. ”Here, wrap your arms around my waist if you can.” Ayero balanced the torch and Bahir’s weight for several unsteady moments while getting him settled before starting the walk back.

”I could’ve handled it, anyway. I’m used to poisons.” She spoke in a confident tone in an attempt to brush away his concern and embellish her own strength. The truth was that while Ayero was no stranger from being poisoned by strange beasts as well as her own, she was in no way immune to its effects. She had also only ever experienced mild to moderate poisoning and wasn’t sure how severe the poison Bahir used was.

”So,” Ayero began before grunting as she adjusted Bahir’s weight on her back. ”What is it that you do for a living, again?”

Bahir was a little surprised that he was lifted from his spot on the ground. It was a little embarrassing, but he was gracious at the same time. He knew that he wouldn't have been able to do so on his own in his current state. When instructed, Bahir slowly wrapped his arm around the woman's waist. He had to at least try to keep his pride in check. Despite how level headed he seemed at times, the blood of the fanalis still coursed through his veins and the thought of being carried out of a mission was eating away at him inside. He did know that if he tried to walk on his own, he wouldn't get anywhere. So, he decided to just bite the bullet.

As she spoke about the poisons, Bahir nodded and let out a "Ooo" noise before muttering about Kabu. He had met the snake once before in Reim. Mostly, the snake was looking for her, but he still met the creature! Then the question about what he did for a living came to mind. Before the fanalis could think of a cover story, his mouth opened and his words fell from his lips rather slowly. "I'm kind of an assassin... at least I used to be... Dad was training me, but I lost him. I mostly spy now though! Like for Octavius. He asked me to do work in Portsmouth.. I didn't get caught! So I did pretty good, doncha think?"

Ayero was glad that Bahir was resting against her back so that he could not see the surprised expression on her face. Though she wasn’t entirely shocked by his profession, she hadn’t expected him to be so open about it and chalked it up to his apparent exhaustion. The Fanalis woman tensed slightly when the word assassin came out of Bahir’s mouth, though it was more out of reflex than anything. That would explain his tricky movements…an assassin, and now he’s a spy? For Octavius? Ayero mulled the words over in her mind, wondering if the tired Fanalis spoke the truth and if so, what the scope of his work for the Fanalis General was.

”You seem fairly adept at sneaking around. You’re lucky I’m on good terms with Octavius.” A small chuckle rode on the end of what she intended to be a serious statement, but Ayero just went with it. ”Be careful with that name. It wouldn’t be good for others to find out…” Ayero began to warn Bahir against using Octavius’ name publically, knowing that the General preferred for people to believe that he was still dead for now. Ah, this isn’t good if he gets loose-lipped with exhaustion…I should keep watch over him until he gets better. For Octavius.

Clearing her throat, Ayero tries to change the track of the conversation. ”What do you mean you ‘lost’ your father?”

W-well... I thought it was okay... cause its you! You wouldn't betray, Octavius.." He mumbled into the woman's hair. His senses were still a bit fuzzy, but he wasn't nearly as dizzy as he was before. When the woman asked Bahir about his father, his body stiffened up a bit. He was quiet for a few minutes before letting out a somber sigh. It was a topic that the fanalis didn't like to talk about... even when his inhibitions were affected. His voice became softer as he started to talk, showing a bit of confliction and hesitation. "Well... we were on a job... in Reim. We were spotted and chased. In our flight, we came to a cliff... he pushed me off as our pursuers closed in... and I swam back to our boat and got back to Balbadd. I haven't heard anything else about him sense.."

”Well…” Ayero paused to shift Bahir’s weight. ”…you do have a point. Just be careful who you tell that to.” There was a hint of unease in her tone, but Ayero felt as if Bahir wasn’t the type to be careless in his day-to-day life. Spies and assassins who weren’t careful usually didn’t last long, so Bahir still being employed as one was a testament to his skill in the field, she supposed.

The woman’s lips thinned into a stern expression as Bahir spoke of his father. Though her face was fairly stoic, her eyes shone with sympathy for the young Fanalis’ plight, though he wouldn’t be able to see it. Family was something Ayero held close to her heart. ”I’m sorry to hear that, Bahir.” They were the only fitting words she could offer in this situation, but they were borne out of empathy and the experience of losing one’s family.
