On the edge of the great green lands, the mages of David hovered above, eyes scouting for anything that could be a threat. There were all manner of beasts that could do damage to them, rogue explorers and maybe even guerillas that believed that they could trump the orthodoxy. That was a fool's game, despite how the war was shifting to and fro there was no way anyone here could stand up to their might. Still, there was one thing that had kept all of them on edge. They were the forward party to scout ahead, six mages all together to begin the assault. There was something that had to keep an eye out for, the great devourer that slithered around.
No one here had seen it, but the rumors had been spread enough that it had even found its way into their information network. It was said there was a serpent that would try to eat anything that dared cross its path, that dared challenge its hunger. Surely they had to be fine in the air, but with tales, they only seemed to get taller, and taller. The younger members of the church had fun saying that had heard it could lurk over the trees, that it could strangle a red lion. Such things were enjoyable to joke about, but few could approach their power and it was ridiculous to believe that such a thing existed so far out.
On the other side, on the other end of all the flora and fauna, the knights under Jean's command had set up a false canopy. They tried to make the wildlife appear as if it had extended farther, archers would aim so that when they flew by they would be able to pick off those too foolish and filled with hubris to check. There would also be those waiting to pounce on anyone who fell to earth or any magician foolish enough to charge them head-on. It was a battle only a few of them had faced outside of their lands. Now they had to make a stand on home turf, they had that advantage but the firepower that the orthodoxy wielded was not to be scoffed at. Even if they had power on their side, it was the light of Mumurr that kept the people strong enough, and hopeful enough to make a stand.
