Spoiler:

Creeping slowly into the den of the Slurvian Ticks, Ayero makes sure that her movements are slow and deliberate. The young woman had experience taking down different types of beast thanks to the various bouts of trouble they’d caused in Heliohapt and Reim alike, but she can’t say that she’s too fond of dealing with them. At least human bandits and thieves were predictable in their nature, a beast’s abilities and movements could be dangerously unpredictable. Fortunately Ayero had been previously warned by the El Nagi clan of the tick’s poisonous abilities when she inquired about the job.

”These giant bugs can’t be as bad as those things in the sewers…” The halfling mumbles as she treks further into the cave, keeping an eye and an ear out for any movement. Kabu trills softly in agreement, keeping his own lookout on Ayero’s shoulders for their next opponent. After a short while Ayero figures that they must be nearing the nest, or at least she hoped so. The cramped cave reminded her of the dark sewers in which she slayed the two chimeras, dragging her broken body back to the surface while she tried to push thoughts of the nauseating creatures from her mind. The memory of the recent battle makes her shiver, wondering from where or whom the monsters had come from.

Her thoughts are interrupted by what sounds like the skittering of many feet upon the cave walls. Moving with careful steps, Ayero slowly approaches the sound which increases in volume until it rounds the corner. She jumps back in surprise at how fast the Sluvian ticks were. Stopping several meters away, the giant bugs observe the strange humanoid intruder in their cave. Clenching her jaw during the standstill, Ayero breaths out slowly between her teeth. Letting out a screech, the tick closest to her scuttles forward, the other three following suit.

Not wasting time in drawing her sword, Ayero springs into the air and brings her leg down on the closest giant bug, feeling the satisfying crack of its shell against the heel of her foot. As the tick cries out in pain and drops to the ground, the half-Fanalis is relieved that it doesn’t seem to take much to fell these creatures.

”Looks like you—hey, ouch!” One of the ticks had made its way into her immediate vicinity and latched itself onto her right arm, hissing as she shook the affected appendage wildly in an effort to loosen the creature from her flesh ”Hey, get off of me! I’m not your snack, you filthy bug!” With an annoyed grunt and a vicious flail of her arm she sends the large insect flying toward the wall. The tick trills weakly in pain after making contact with the side of the cave, slowly attempting to flex his damaged legs as his body rests at the cave floor.

”Hmph, serves you right. That bite didn’t even hur—“ A look of pure shock plasters her face as a tingling sensation slowly radiates from the spot on her arm that had been bitten. ”Wha—“ As it turned out, the tick’s bite had paralytic properties as evidenced by the growing numbness in her arm. ”Shit…” She mutters as the Paralyzing Hormone pumps through her system, thankfully stopping at her shoulder. With her right arm now hanging uselessly at her side, she turns to face the remaining two ticks with a keen eye, intending to go at this more carefully lest she risk paralysis to her remaining arm or legs.

With an appropriate battle cry to accompany her technique, Ayero slams her right foot into the ground, causing the floor of the cave to fracture under the Fanalis enhanced strength of her attack. The ensuing shockwave from her Battle Stomp knocks the remaining two bugs back 10 meters, crying out in high pitched whines as they’re pushed away from their target. Following shortly behind the shockwave on her feet, Ayero swings a foot at the closest tick while he scrambles to regain his bearings after being tossed backwards by the halfling’s attack. The time she spends kicking the tick while he’s down allows the last remaining bug to skitter to his feet, intent on fighting this red headed invader.

Rearing on his hind legs, the giant bug screeches out a warning before lunging forward, lashing out with a bite and gnashing his teeth. Moving to the side, Ayero dodges the assault. Again the tick lurches for her with another intended chomp, aiming for the woman’s non-paralyzed arm in desperation. They continue their dance for a short while, each time Ayero swiftly dodging the attacks as the bug’s valiant effort to defend his next forces the halfling to slowly move back toward the entrance of the cave.

Finally having enough of this game, Ayero digs her heel into the ground behind her and pushes forward with a fist aimed at the last remaining tick soldier. Screeching in surprise, the big bug rears in its back legs once more and spits out a blob of Spitting Stench goo when the woman is only a few feet away. ”Ugh!” Taken by surprised despite the fact that she was warned, the slime stops Ayero in mid-air. Stumbling to the ground, the Fanalis woman assumes a wide stance with her arms cast out to the side and a disgusted look on her face. ”This is even worse than the sewer! Ugh, I think it’s in my hair!” Frantically shaking the goo from her body, she lunges at the tick and delivers a swift kick to its shell, cracking the exoskeleton and turning away from the beast to let it writhe in pain alone. ”Hrm…at least the feeling in my arm’s back.” Flexing her right hand, she’s pleased that at least she’s regained feeling in the limb.

”Why does this always happen to me?” She begins to remove the slime from her body while grumbling irately. After clearing away the last large blob of muck from her body, the halfling casts a glance at the fallen soldiers to ensure that they indeed remain fallen before continuing on her way.

She only makes it a few steps before the effects of the poisonous goo begin to manifest themselves. Even though she had cleaned the majority of it from her body, the toxins had already sunk into her skin. ”Nng…” Holding her head in her hand she massages at her temple while wincing and takes slow steps forward. It was beginning to get more difficult for her to concentrate with the increasingly painful headache, but Ayero still had a job to do. The snake who had remained quiet and out of the way for the duration of the battle hissed gently in her ear in an expression of concern. When no snide comment accompanied this act, the beast began to worry.

After what seemed like forever in her current state, the pair finally crept their way upon the Sluvian tick nest. Cringing through the pain in her head, Ayero leans heavily against the mouth of the cave which lets out into a larger opening where the Mother sits upon her nest. ”Alright, looks like all we…need to do is…” A violent gurgle of her stomach drowns out whatever she was going to say and she quickly bends her head down, vomiting the contents of her lunch onto the cave floor.

Panting and grunting from her sudden upchuck, Ayero slowly raises her head while squinting from the pain in her head. ”Nng… … …shit.” Her outburst had apparently attracted the attention of the Sluvian Tick Mother who didn’t look too pleased at seeing the humanoid woman deep within her nest. With a roar that displays her great jowls, Ayero freezes in her spot, the pain in her body and generally feeling of being unwell causing her reactions to be a bit slow.

In a drive of fury to protect his poisoned master, Kabu opens his mouth and lets out an enraged hiss right back at the massive tick, following up shortly with a Poison Shot of his own, sending the venomous projectile the Mother’s way. The snake’s poison hits its mark and sinks into the tick’s body. A low roar is emitted from the giant bug as she thrashes from the surprise and eventual pain, her movements gradually slowing.

”Good…good snake, Kabu.” She breathes, trying to come up with a proper plan for taking down the alpha tick. Figuring she should take advantage of her opponent’s decreased speed, her blade is unsheathed and she takes slow steps out into the open. Fighting back the urge to become ill again, the Fanalis woman clenches her teeth and pushes off of her heels into the air, arm raised above her head and her sword tilted back in preparation for a slash. But the Sluvian Tick Mother sees the attacking woman and swings her great clawed arms in Ayero’s direction with a loud roar.

Twin slashes are dealt across her body from the Double Claw, leaving bloody claw marks across the front of her abdomen and hips. The attack knocks the woman from the air, causing her to land with a thud to the dusty ground below. As she picks herself up, the unrest in her stomach begins to subside and the headache slowly ebbs away, with a few lingering traces of pain. Her mind began to clear as the poison is cleared from her system, grateful that the tick’s venom didn’t last too long.

Clambering into a steady standing position, Ayero watches the tick mother carefully for a few seconds before drawing her sword back once more and swiftly moving to the side of the creature. She seemed to be distracted from the pain of Kabu’s venom as she herself was earlier from the tick’s toxins. Taking advantage of this, Ayero delivers two clean slashes to the mother’s belly, easily dodging any of her slowed movements of retaliation with her enhanced Fanalis speed. As the tick brings a giant arm down in an attempt to crush the girl, Ayero leaps into the air and onto the appendage, using it as a stepping stone to give herself more leverage. Pushing off of the mother’s arm, she aims for the tick’s face with her fist, swinging her arm into the beast’s face.

A cry of pain bounces off of the cave walls as the mother thrashes from the attack, Ayero landing safely on the ground. Letting out the breath she didn’t know she was holding in, the Fanalis woman straightens herself as the Sluvian Tick Mother emits a few dying moans. Not wanting to stick around any longer than necessary, Ayero sheaths her talwar and hurries to make her way out of the cramped environment that was the Sluvian Tick’s nest.
