Part of a selected among the feudal lords, called Daimyos to actually have the trust of the Emperor and act as their advisors, along with only other two clans. This position of almost infinite privilege had one flaw: they had many unspoken enemies that were hungry for their position and glory. Still, the last head of the clan, the Daimyo, Morisato Matatabi was a fierce warrior, and a man of utmost honor. Unlike most of the daimyos, he had no patience or interest in playing the games of power and politics, and only acted in the best interest of the Emperor, and Kina Kingdom. While a noble choice, it left the Morisato clan blinded to the treat that would eventually destroy it: the betrayal of one of their vassals, the Kawaguchi clan.

As he grew up, he began rising through the ranks of the troops, until he reached the position of captain, at the age of 16. Once he acquired the position, he began training his troops, still under the supervision of his master and uncle, demanding ultimate discipline and honor. Among his underlings, was his brother Yamato, who jokingly gave him the nickname of Demon, which served him well. After one year leading his troops, he was finally recognized as an adult, and, as such, he forfeited his child name and became Shigure.

When all preparations were ready, during one diner to celebrate the upcoming union, Sousuke came rushing through the door and informed Matatabi that the heir of the Nakayama clan was plotting to kill Matahachi and Masumi, thus disposing of the two heirs. That would weaken the Morisato clan and, once he married Mayumi, he would be closer to his goal, which was to take over the Morisato clan lands and status.
Horrified by such claims, Matatabi demanded proof, and Sousuke promptly led them to a hidden place in the woods, where they had plenty of weapons conceiled, all of them engraved with the Nakayama clan symbol.
Angry with such plot, Matatabi gathered with his advisors and sons and decided on that same night to slaughter all of the Nakayamas that were there, including the heir to the clan, a decision that was later supported by Kawaguchi Sousuke. However, when they were ready to attack, the Nakayama had fled the land and kidnapped Matatabi’s daughter, which completely enraged them all.
The Morisato decided to wage war against the Nakayama, but they knew they needed the Emperor’s approval. Kawaguchi Sousuke volunteered to plead their case to the Emperor and so he travelled to the capital. A month later, he came back with the Emperor’s approval and the promise of sending troops to aid them when they reached Nakayama fiefdom. With that in hands, the Morisato army marched to war.
However, when they reached the battlefield, the Nakayama army was ready and, to their surprise, the imperial troops were alongside them, as well as the Kawaguchi’s men. Shocked by that, Matatabi demanded answer and they answered that the Emperor had been informed of the Morisato clan’s plot to take over the Nakayama land by faking a kidnapping. They insulted each other’s honor and a fearsome battle began.
The Morisato clan was outnumbered four to one in this battle, and faced a terrible defeat, leading them to retreat back to their fiefdom and withstand a siege. Still, when they came back, the castle and the land were on fire; the Kawaguchi seized the opportunity and stoke when most of the troops were away. Shigure, who had marched to war was absolutely shocked and angry; his brother Kenshin had been slayed and his body was pinned to a three in the entrance of the walls, where the Kawaguchi army was ready to engage the weakened Morisato army. Still, they fought brave, they fought valiantly, and most of them died.
The fire claimed many lives, and so did the sword and spear. When all hope seemed lost, Masumi, the second brother ordered the surviving to flee to the harbor, where he had ships ready for an emergency. When they were fleeing, a spearman attacked Masumi. Seeing that, Shigure jumped in front of his brother and was nearly killed by the deadly trust and fainted. Masumi managed to save him together with Minato and the three remaining siblings and some troops got themselves into one of the ships and set sail.
Two other ships were sunk with fire, and the ship they were in was in a terrible shape, which led to its destruction before it reached the land of Kou.
Shigure, while still severely injured was lost in the sea for a week and almost died. By some miracle, he was found by some Kou fisherman and taken to the shore. However, being now a criminal of Kina, he was arrested by the Kou soldiers and thrown in a cell, where he rotted for another two years. After that time, without being able to confirm what crimes he committed, he was released, now with a deep hatred towards the members of Kou. The only thing he managed to get back was his set of swords.

Blood and fire everywhere. The screams of pain and suffering of his people were like the song of the demons from hell. Shigure’s violet eyes were wide open with both shock and hatred as he stared at his castle ablaze. He took a deep breath and, by tightening the grip on his sword, he stared at the enemy coming. ”You will pay for this! You dishonored bastards! I may die here, but I will die as a true warrior! I will take you all with me!!” he roared as he charged against the soldiers coming at him. Shigure’s sword was filled with rage, and his fiery determination to take vengeance on his enemies and ensure that his brother Masumi would survive was everything he had left. The cuts he received were superficial, and with the rush of adrenaline, he couldn’t care less about it. After cutting a soldier in half, he stared back to see his surviving brother who was issuing orders for everyone to follow him to the harbor.
”Masumi-sama! I will keep them here! Save yourself! Save as many as you can!” he said, but before Masumi could even dream to answer, Shigure stared at a terrifying view: a spearman was charging against his brother and his attack would surely kill him. The fear made shivers run down the younger’s spine and, without even thinking, he ran towards his brother. ”No! Masumi-sama, get down!!” those were his last words before he jumped in front of his brother, turning his back to protect him from harm. The spear pierced deeply through his armor, and injured his kidney, but it wasn’t strong enough to go out on the other side. Shigure fell to his knees and, with his eye sight fading away, he managed to stare at his brother, who angrily killed the spearman. ”I… W-would gladly die f-for you again… K-kojirou…” his voice was fainting and, due to the loss of blood, he called his brother by his child name, and that was the last thing he remembered before fainting.
