After her talk with the Elder, Lexi was concerned for the safety of the tribe. While nature was known for retaking what belonged to it over time, it was not usually known for being aggressive. The only way to find out the truth of the matter, though, was to investigate herself. It was entirely possible that the tribe members had simply become spooked and let the rumors build to a point where anyone else way simply too frightened to view things objectively. She prepared for her trip carefully, making sure her quiver was full and Onyxia was sharpened, tucking her new throwing knives into their sheathe and wrapping the chained dagger around her waist. It had been wonderful of Ariella to give her the new weapons and she intended to put them to good use.

Once she had everything in place, she borrowed a horse and began riding out towards the forest, following the directions provided from the Elder. It was not hard to locate, the forest spanning a massive chunk to the north of the village. As she approached, it was easy to see why it had a reputation for things less than human, the aura emanating from the forest screaming of doom and gloom. A kind of darkness seemed to shroud the forest in a haze that had a clear message that anything entering was unwelcome. Her horse refused to get near the tree line and she was forced to unmount and tied the mare to a tree, not wanting to force it to go into the dismal conditions of the forest.

She shivered as she edged into the forest, able to feel the ominous aura pressing in around her and making her uncomfortable. She steadied her hand on her bow, refusing to let the creepy sensations scare her off. The forest was devoid of the normal chirping of birds and scampering of creatures and that alone worried Lexi. A forest was a place of life and nature, there should be sounds all around. Her steps were too quiet to have silenced the forest so why was there not the sound of rabbits, birds, or even the rustling of leaves? Even the creek she carefully stepped across did not seem to be making splashing sounds as it hit the banks.

At the edge of her vision something moved and she was immediately alert, as it was the first movement she had seen in the forest but when she turned to look, nothing was there. Everything about this forest seemed… wrong, odd and just off in some way. Again, in the periphery of her vision, something moved and she whipped her head to the side, her blond locks flying as her head turned, her bow raised and ready for battle. Nothing was there and her eyes narrowed. Nothing was that good, to escape her careful eyeing. An idea popped into her head and instead of looking away, she instead looked closer at the rock and tree filled terrain, paying close attention to the patterns she found. There! The harder she looked, she began to notice an anomaly in the features of a section of mossy rock, the shape seeming wrong, just slightly. The longer she stared, the more she noticed that it was not, in fact, a rock. Rather, it was something hovering just over the ground, but it was disguised well. The moss covering whatever it was made it blend seamlessly into the surroundings. She pulled back the string on her bow, releasing an arrow at the oddity and it flew true, striking into something that gave a mighty screech, the creature collapsing to the ground.

Lexi approached it carefully, the body crumpling to the ground. She nudged it with her foot and the creature did not respond so she knelt down to examine it more closely. It appeared to be a floating creature of some type, the skin the same shade of grey that the rocks in the area had and the moss growing from it was real. In the middle of the creature’s body was what appeared to be a large eye, which was where her arrow had struck. Now that she knew what she was looking for, she straightened and kept a careful eye out. To her left, she barely caught movement before rocks were launched at her. The creature was far enough away that she was able to duck to the side to avoid the stones, another arrow leaving her bow to bury itself in the creature’s eye.

Two down. How many more?

Her steps were softer than a whisper as she looked around. She crouched down as she scanned the area, waiting for something else to move. There, a mere 20 meters away, two more odd creatures hovered, seeming to watch her, waiting for her to do something. She did not give them a chance to react, using Multi-Shot, two arrows flying towards each of them and making them drop to the ground with an unnatural screech that echoed through the forest. With four of the creatures down, she wondered how many more there would be. Behind her, too close to dodge, a fifth creature appeared and used Slam, the jarring earth knocking her to the ground and bruising her rump as she fell. She was dazed for a moment, allowing the creature to spit a rock at her and striking her arm.

She shook off the sting of the rock, the force almost enough to break her bone. The creature began to hover closer to her and she feigned greater injury than she truly felt, her right hand discreetly pulling Onyxia from its sheathe. As soon as it was in range, Lexi lunged forward, burying the blade in the creature’s eye and watching it collapse to the ground. Her eyes were sharp as she looked around, waiting for another to make its presence known. She rolled to her feet, nursing her hurt arm as she waited for another attack. She stayed tensed like that, prepared and waiting for what felt like an eternity. It was not until she was certain she would not be attacked that she began to relax, but she kept her alertness about her as she left the forest to report to the Elder what she had found.
