The outskirts of this small town provided excellent training ground, Ayero thought. The topography of the land was hilly and bare of most trees, good for stretching every muscle in her legs. Despite having to swing a blade to earn a living, the Fanalis woman felt the need to keep her body in fighting shape at all times should something unexpected arise. The memories of the chaotic slave auction in Heliohapt fueled this thought, and with tension between Reim and the Kou invaders one could never be too careful.

It happened that a group of shady characters were making their way along the dirt path to the town, not out of the training woman’s line of sight. Pausing in her movements to study them, she notices how they walk carefully, bodies shrouded in dark cloaks. Eyes narrowing slightly in suspicion, she straightens and begins to walk toward them, wary of the way they seem to be turning their heads to survey the area and looking over their shoulders often. When she catches sight of the unmistakable glint of a metallic blade as one of the figures shifts to adjust his covering, she breaks into a fast walk and calls out to them. ”Oi!”

With the bodies of most of the would-be thieves scattered around her, Ayero prepares her final assault on the remaining man. Their apparent leader had sat back for most of the fight while allowing his men to fight and die for him. Fixed on ending this quickly, Ayero leaps into the air and focuses on feeling and then gathering the magoi in her body, willing it into her left arm and extending it around her blade. She could practically feel her energy burning hot against the steel as she swings the weapon down with practiced precision, cutting deeply into her opponent with her diagonal Cross Slash.

The man’s subsequent scream turns into a painful gurgle as he chokes on his own blood, the slash catching him in the throat and extending to his hip at a sharp angle. Landing swiftly on the ground as the man falls, Ayero huffs and flicks a stray locke of hair from her face. Standing there for a moment to regain her bearings and ensure that the danger was over, she realizes that the bodies were blocking the road. ”Oh…” She mutters, scratching at her head. She sets to work quickly, dragging the defeated men to the side of the road, the black snake around her body unwinding himself from his master to help move the roadblocks.

Engrossed in clearing the bodies from the road, neither Ayero nor Kabu notices Jahan approaching until he announces his presence. Turning swiftly to the dark haired young man, the Fanalis woman’s eyes narrow in suspicion at the sudden appearance. She looks the man over, sizing him up. He didn’t appear threatening on sight and had no visible weapons, but by the way he introduced himself she figured he was either very friendly or up to something.

The snake glides back up Ayero’s body, prepared to attack if she gave an order. His large red eyes remain fixed on Jahan the entire time, watching the young man for any aggressive movements. ”What thing?” She takes a step forward, widening her stance slightly with her scimitar in hand.

Sensing his master’s unease, Kabu once again slithers down from her body, heading toward Jahan. Ayero does not reprimand the snake but rather keeps a keen eye on his movements, trusting whatever it was he was about to do. The black snake makes his way over to the half-Fanalis man and slithers up his body, winding around his torso in a similar fashion to how he rested on Ayero. He stops after wrapping around the man’s chest, holding his head just inches away from Jahan’s face and stares into his eyes. Kabu would not wrap around him so tightly that it would be difficult to breathe, and the man would still be able to move as his arms or legs were not bound. Mouth set in a thin line, Ayero watches Jahan to see how he reacts to the snake.

Ayero’s stony expression turns into a comical gawk as Jahan laughs and reaches out to pet Kabu. He’s petting a strange poisonous snake  that is wrapped around his body. This…what’s wrong with this guy?! Ayero closes her open mouth and straightens, a hard look in her eyes as she continues to watch the two interact. In response to Jahan’s reaction, the snake simply tilts his head and flicks out his tongue to tickle the man’s nose.

As he walks over to Ayero, Kabu slithers from the man’s body to take his place around Ayero. She reaches up to place a hand on his head, realizing that the snake had judged this man to be genuine in his interest. However, the stubborn woman still wasn’t entirely convinced. ”What exactly is it that you want me to teach you? Swordplay?” She gives him another once-over and raises a brow seeing that he has no visible weapon.

Pursing her lips in a thin line at the young man, she examines him with a critical eye. She couldn’t tell if he was up to something, or simply curious about her magoi manipulation technique. The latter would make sense, magoi manipulation itself was something she’d never heard of until recently so she doubted that many knew of it.

”So you noticed, huh…”

Still stroking the snake’s scales, she gives Jahan a thoughtful look. He must have a keen eye and some decent skill to know that her final attack and some sort of unorthodox power behind it and not just fueled by her own massive strength. Anyone could plainly see that the slash was stronger, but if this man was asking her to teach him then he could probably tell that the technique didn’t rely on skill alone. Glancing over at the snake on her shoulder, she notes his unconcerned expression and turns back to Jahan. Waving for him to follow, she leads them away from the road and back to where she’d been training. ”Ayero. And this is Kabu.” She tilts her head to the snake as they walk. Her eyes narrow in curiosity as he mentions his guild, wondering if they did mercenary work if he had to be “strong”. ”What kind of guild is this?”

Regardless of Jahan’s answer, Ayero wouldn’t disagree to train him.  Her curiosity about this strange young man had gotten the better of her, and part of her wanted to see if he’d be able to perform magoi manipulation.

”I’m not sure if you’re aware, but all living things have this…sort of energy called “magoi” inside of them. I myself don’t know much about it, but if I concentrate I can feel it moving in my own body.” Brandishing her scimitar in front of her, she continues her explanation. ”I’ve learned to gather this energy and focus it into my arm, and eventually around my sword. By manipulating the magoi that flows through my body, I am able to wield it as if it’s an extension of my arm.”

Giving Jahan a pointed look, she sheaths her sword and stands before him with her hands on her hips. ”Try it. Try feeling the “magoi” in your body.”

She doesn’t speak as Jahan lapses into silence, closing his eyes and attempting to concentrate. She watches him with mild interest, wondering if he’d be able to feel the flow of his own magoi for himself. Her mind briefly ventures back to his explanation of the guild he headed, wondering if he truly was committed to protecting the people of Reim. It was a nice thought that there were others looking out for the people, especially in such tumultuous times. Admirable, even.

Keeping watch on the young man as he concentrated, Ayero noticed the slight movement of his hair and clothing. Given that there wasn’t a breeze at the time, she supposed it had something to do with him being able to register his magoi. Not waiting around for him to affirm this, she speaks once more to him.

”Feeling it now, eh?” She comments, running a hand through her red locks. ”Now try and move it, focus it into your fists or legs. Once you think you’ve got that…” She widens her stance and smirks, raising her arms in front of her in preparation. ”…come at me.”

Over the past month, Ayero’s thoughts on Jahangir shifted rather dramatically. At first she thought he was just some punk kid looking for a fight or some way to get into trouble. Though wary of him initially, she had agreed to teach him what she knew of magoi manipulation as sort of a test to satisfy her own curiosity. Harnessing the power of one’s magoi to the point where it could be used in battle was not an easy task and would take more than just a few days of intensive training to master, so she figured that Jahan would likely give up on learning it after a short while. She was surprised when he met her at the same spot the next day, and continued to do so for a few weeks.

Even though she initially outmatched him in skill and the sessions often ended with him fatigued, she had to admire his dedication. He was surprisingly apt in fighting to begin with, and eventually the Fanalis woman was able to see that the kid had potential to excel in battle. It wouldn’t come easily, and she reminded him of this every so often, but he didn’t seem to mind. It was during this time that she also felt somewhat of a bond form with the other halfling, often scolding him for his sometimes eccentric behavior. So it came as no surprise to her when instead of Jahan, she found his message to her one morning when she went to meet him for their daily training. With a shrug of her shoulders and a roll of her eyes, she departed for the next town. She’d try to return in a month, but she was running low on coin and needed to go someplace more populated to find decent work.

After roughly a month, Ayero found herself in a good enough position to allow her to return to the small town where she had first met and trained Jahan. Strolling to the outskirts of the village where they often sparred, she scans the horizon for any sign of the dark haired young man.

Ayero hadn’t seen Jahan meditating on the boulder. From where she was standing, the gentle hills cast a shadow over the young man that hid him from her brief visual scan. That…and she wasn’t used to seeing Jahan completely still in one place for as long as he had been. She turns to face in his direction when he calls to her, brows furrowing as she doesn’t immediately recognize his voice, probably due to the fact that he’d referred to her as big sis. ”Jahan?”

”Wha—!” She yelps as he encases her in a hug and whirls her around, certainly not expecting this kind of greeting. ”Big sis?” She echoes his words after hearing him call her that again. After he puts her down she scratches at her head softly while looking him over. She noted how his figure seemed to fill out more over the past month, his Fanalis heritage showing through his muscular frame. And…did he get a little taller, too?

”I’m doing well and Kabu is behaving.”

She can’t help but let a chuckle slip out, eyes softening a bit as she spoke to him. Now that she thought about it, she did sort of care for Jahan as if he were family. Their similar heritage may have helped, but she would be lying if she said that the young man hadn’t grown on her with his antics. At first she was a bit annoyed by him, but gradually she was able to conclude that he was a determined man with a good heart.

”And how are you? I hope you’ve been getting to bed on time.”

The halfling woman would scold Jahan when he stayed up too late or didn’t eat what she considered to be a balanced diet. “You can’t fight if you don’t take care of yourself!” She would lecture, firm in her beliefs and not afraid to nag Jahan seeing as how he had come to her for training.

She listens intently as Jahan recounts what he’d been up to for the past month, raising her brows when he mentioned having mastered magoi manipulation. She wasn’t all that surprised that he was bragging, considering that this was…well, Jahan.

”Alright, punk. Show me what you’ve got. If I find out you’ve been slacking, I’m gonna beat you black and blue.”

She takes a few steps back and crosses her arms over her chest giving the dark haired young man a hard, challenging look. She’d pushed him hard in their training of the basics because she saw potential in him, and now he had to prove to her that he was able to learn the rest on his own.

Ayero always tried not to underestimate her opponents, hence why she was keeping a critical eye on Jahan. She didn’t think that he’d intentionally try to hurt her, but well…the boy could possibly get carried away seeing as how he loves to fight so much. With this in mind she spares a few moments to take in her surroundings should she need to move quickly before carefully watching Jahan has he prepares to show her the fruits of his labor. When he announces the name of his technique, Ayero feels the reverb of his voice nearly vibrate against her skin. Must be from gathering his magoi… She wonders silently, noticing how Jahan seemed far more focused than usual.

”Ahh...” She wasn’t able to sense his magoi or anything like that, but she knew what was coming. The air held the same feeling in it when she was about to release an attack from the built-up magoi around her sword. Digging her both of her heels into the ground, Ayero springs backward at 15 m/s. Sailing through the air, her eyes remained locked on the other halfling as he performs his attack and the subsequent blast that erupted, making it almost look like he had cast some sort of destructive magic. Though she had expected Jahan to come up with something both creative and destructive using his newly learned magoi manipulation, she was honestly a bit taken aback at his results. Then again, knowing the dark haired half-Fanalis boy, something like this was to be completely expected.

Even though Jahan was the one who was supposed to be showing what he had learned, Ayero hadn’t taken a break from her usual training. She had always tried to make use of her natural speed and strength within battle, but lately she felt as if she wasn’t reaching her true potential dictated by her Fanalis heritage. Over the past month she too had been busy, mostly working on moves that weren’t entirely offensive in nature. This particular jump that she had performed was something she’d been training herself to do and involved a few previous attempts in stretching her muscles to accommodate the movement. Landing 10 m away from her initial spot as Jahan’s first attack ripped through the ground, her eyes flickered as he saw him bring back his other palm for a second blow. ”Shit.”

She hadn’t taken her eyes off of Jahan the entire time, knowing of the boy’s reckless behavior. But even as he left a rather large crater in the ground he still didn’t seem satisfied…she had to praise his perseverance, the guy certainly took his training seriously. But as his palm met the earth once more and tore the ground to shreds, she quickly realized that she was in the blast range. The magoi enhanced technique was shredding through the earth too quickly for her to move backwards in order to get away. Turning her back on the attack to use her full speed wasn’t the best idea either, so Ayero figured she had to stand her ground and deal with this head on. Though Jahan had certainly grown exponentially in strength, his teacher was no weakling.

Tilting slightly forward on her feet, Ayero inhales deeply and focuses on the pieces of earth heading toward her that were kicked up from the force of Jahan’s attack. Moving at 15 m/s, the halfling woman side steps a piece of rock to the left, leaping out of the way of another chunk as it comes in from the right. She never pictured herself dodging large pieces of rock, figuring that if she had to be light on her feet she would do so in the presence of arrows or needles…some sort of projectile weapon. She ducks and weaves through several more rocks that come her way, narrowly dodging the hunks of ground in an effort to not expend more energy than she needed and to conserve her movements should she need to dash. As the magoi manipulated blast ended, the shreds of earth that remained airborne clattered to the ground after losing their momentum. A large dust cloud had been kicked up and simultaneously settled down over the area, allowing both Ayero and Jahan to see just how much damage had been done.

Exhaling slowly, Ayero reaches up to weave her right hand through her hair. That was…unexpected yet expected. While she figured that Jahan would come up with a grand technique that use his Fanalis strength to the fullest, she didn’t expect it to have that sort of massive range. It made her begin to think about her own method of apply magoi manipulation, perhaps she shouldn’t just use her blade and take advantage of her natural strength. Shaking her head with a fleeting smile, Ayero mused on how characteristic it was of Jahan to “go big or go home”. Spotting a head of dark hair some distance away, Ayero makes no move to approach him quickly but rather takes a leisurely pace as she strides toward Jahan. As she drew closer she noticed how he looked a bit displeased, clenching his teeth while surveying the product of his technique.

”I don’t want to say that I’m too impressed because it’ll make your head big. Well…bigger.” She puts her hands on her hips and shifts her weight to one foot. ”If you’re not pleased with your own work, then I suppose that you need to train more.” She gives the boy another once-over before turning her gaze to the large craters he had made. ”However…” She cracks a small grin. ”You’ve done better than I expected. I think you’ve given me an idea for a magoi manipulation technique of my own.”

A thoughtful pause and then she continues. ”When I first agreed to train you, I was sure that you wouldn’t last a day. But you proved me wrong, and continued to do so about you. You may be a hyper little punk of a kid, but you’ve got unparalleled determination and strength. It takes more than just physical prowess to learn how to manipulate magoi the way that you did.” Magoi manipulation was more than just putting all of your strength into a punch, it involved a level of focus that Fanalis didn’t really need to achieve in battle due to their natural strength and size. She predicted that this would be Jahan’s biggest obstacle, but once again he had surprised her. And she was glad for him, glad that he was able to harness this power and cultivate in on his own. It was almost as if…

”I’m proud of you, Jahan. You worked hard, and it shows.” She lashes out suddenly, grabbing the boy’s head with her hand and violently ruffling his hair. It was a playful gesture that was probably caused a bit of discomfort with how roughly she was treating him, but to her it was a sign of affection.
