- He sat by the water, looking at the glare of the shimmer in the water. The melting sun peeked its way into his eyes which looked hazy and like caramel. He picked up a stone nearby and tossed it in the river of Alfeios. The ripple effect transversed until it died down. His eyes were constant at the little bumps in the water.
"What are you looking at?" asked Typhon, now five-headed baby Hydra. His body quiver and fresh scales finding it hard to discover and adapt to the outside world.
"Nothing baby Hydra, I couldn't ever swim in my life, strange isn't it?" Ghost replied as he sighed. It seemed like he was talking to the mountain in front of him.
"Well! You are a magician. You can do anything right?" Hydra replied patting his shoulder. Although Hydra was only 20 cm, his gesture of comfort made Ghost's heart move a little.
"Yeah, magician or not swimming is something we all should know right? Especially if we continue to live here. You never know what day it might come in handy." He chuckled. Flecks of sunlight remained in his eyes as he got up.
"Don't worry my precious friend, I have something that will cheer you up, by the way!" Typhon added. He was brushing his tail against Ghost's slender body as he let those words out. Like a poor kitten.
"Something for me?" Ghost was taken aback, how a little dragon who still had a long way to go anticipated such a thing.
"I am of age and I want you to train me, train me to fight against the real dangers out there. The monsters of the land, the sea, and the air. Maybe one day I might train you to swim too" He gasped.
"Nah Nah, swim, and you? It's an odd occurrence you are all fire and flames." Ghost clicked his tongue as he teased him. He extended his hand and rubbed his little belly.
"I am much obliged, that you considered me deserving enough. Let's head to the caravan once the sun is completely down. You can see your flames more clearly, where they are directed and how to aim better." Ghost said folding his arms.
They watched the sun hiding behind the mountains completely, silently watching the auras of the sky change. The shades of purple and cotton candy pink now spread across with little twinkles of the star.
"I think you aren't happy that I chose you, Ghost," Typhon said, breaking the silence.
"No, it's nothing like that, I am really glad just a little occupied at the thought that everyone has limits no matter what they think of themselves." Ghost said droopily.
" I bet, you can swim one day! Come on!" Typhon said as he held his hand.
Ghost smiled meekly at him as they both walked towards the open ground, under the blanket of stars and the moon. Days started to pass by, Hydra growing stronger with each move. He had learned how to perfectly aim towards his opponent, how to adeptly use his wings and fight off some of the most vicious little bugs too.
"Let's measure you little thing, it seems like you will burn down a house with that flame of yours!" Ghost said one day.
"I bet I will, anyone who comes in my way," Typhon replied showing off his new skills.
" 50 cm! That's huge!" Ghost exclaimed as he stretched out a long measuring tool to him.
Since then, over the course of nine months, hand in hand engrossed in deep conversations they would tread to the caravan.
Hydra had learned a lot of things with the help of Ghost's insight. His five heads were enormous and huge, he had outgrown Ghost long ago and he was ready to take in on some serious battles. The scales on his body were outgrown and could hurt someone on a touch. His flame is long and directed to the point. He had in fact known the best of skills and Ghost was indeed proud of him. And well, so was the hydra, he believed he had made the right choice a year ago and everything was falling in right place.
Ghost was out in the evening practicing how to raise objects in the air, using his magic when an owl delivered a scroll, when Typhon rushed, his heavy feet making strong noise as roared at the tent from behind.
"Ghost! It is about time, we leave this place and travel" Typhon exclaimed! as he was excited and joyous.
"Travel? travel where? You know Typhon, we have been here all our lives. I can't abandon my duties like this, my caravan my duels..." Ghost said as he dropped in a sad tone taking it beyond.
"Oh! silly, I meant we should go see the other parts of the world too and come back here when we want. I am strong now too, we both will protect each other. It will be our little adventure. Now that Mya and Moka are also taking some time off." Hydra added explaining his stance.
"Oh vacationing! You mean, sure I mean I would love to, your training is almost over too and I feel pretty trapped in here if you would ask me."
"Oh! I love you for this! thank you so much, man! it means a lot to me, to see the worlds of the outside too" Typhon said as he hoped on his feat.
"I am thinking somewhere near the sea, I love watching the sea take its toll and then my student alongside me." Ghost replied as he instantly went to roll up his things.
The place they decided was not too far away, yet the beauty of it was unparalleled. Ghost kept his sleeping bag, rolled up, and nothing else. They didn't need to, Hydra's wings were strong enough to carry them both.
He flew effortlessly on the clouds of gray and silver. Ghost holding on to his body, and scales. he felt comfortable and was sure he would make this flight. Reminiscing how he was only a few centimeters. He knew he would bring strong, and he has proved him right in every instance with each passing day.
After a few hours of highs and lows, the gush of wind in Ghost's hair pushed it backward and the joy of feeling free ended.
He dropped low near the sea, just like Ghost has wanted. Typhon wanted this trip to be dedicated only to his trainer, he had devoted his time, and energy to him, making him capable of what he was today. He deserved it. He made the vacation plan, and Ghost decided on the place, it was textbook perfect.
"Oh! Look Typhon! The sea!" Ghost said as he hoped off Typhon's back.
He had managed to land on the closest thing to his master's liking.
Ghost looked at the sea like a little child looks at a lollypop, with lust and a desire to concur with it.
Typhon now understood it Ghost, his long desire to swim, and why he had been looking at the water for over so long.
"This is my favorite thing in the world! See how strong it is, and now fierce too, since it's a sea and a little too big. You see Typhon?" Ghost added as he chucked, as he turned back and addressed Hydra.
" Yeah! I like it too. It's beautiful." Typhon said smiling at Ghost, how a little thing like that had made him the happiest man to exist.
"Well, I know you are stronger than the sea now since you just gave me this amazing flight just now," Ghost added as he patted his back.
The sun had almost gone it had been a long day.
They lay down under the stars a little early and decided to sleep off the tiredness. Hydra took a second as he snored loud.
Ghost glanced at his body heaving to the sounds of the night.
He quickly got to his feet and saw the sea, sleeping too. He took calculated steps towards the serenity of the sea and dipped in the water and giggled as it touched his feet.
Without realizing he was soon in it, afloat. He could feel the cold air on his wet feet. He sighed as he closed his eyes. Lost in the tranquil he paddled with his arms forward as he glided ahead, he let go of all his effort, now struggling to move. Before he could do anything, he descended down to the pull of the gravity at once. Over the year he has managed to stay on the surface, but tonight time was against him. He panicked as he opened his eyes, pitch black water surrounding him from all sides. He was frantic, inhaling in the water and trying to move upwards.
"Calm down Ghost, calm down..." He whispered to himself shutting his eyes again.
A quiet second or two passed, which seemed like hours, and he felt something touch his feet. He opened his eyes to discover a giant whale, his slick, blubber brushing his feat. Without a second thought, he pushed his body, struggling against the thrush of the water, Nothing. He almost felt frozen, captured by water. The whale grimed around, his jaw around one meter long. Sweat dripped out of his forehead, he gulped on the seawater trying to fill the anti air in his lungs but all in vain, more water filling them up.
Without considering anything he screamed at the top of his none functional lungs.
"Typhon! Typhon."
The sea consumed his screams too.
With one swift motion, the whale pierced his stomach, the pool of blood gushed out and he too became a part of the nothingness of the sea.
Excruciating pain radiated along his body, as he tried to escape and move his body.
Meanwhile, Hydra woke up agitated, knowing something is wrong, in his heart, he looked around and found Ghost's clothes by the shore, and he jumped in the sea impromptu.
He haphazardly searched and saw the whale, with specks of blood.
He struggled to blow fire, but being underneath it subsided to nothing. He scrapped on the whale's body clawing it with all the force he had. He threw it across while the whale squeaked in pain. He looked around, but Ghost was nowhere to be found. Hydra swam closer to the whale and poked his eye out. The whale bit Typhon on his tail. Amidst it all, he saw Ghost, sunk to the bottom. Running away from the whale who was following him, he grabbed his lifeless body and moved to the surface, as fast as he could. Whale constantly struck in behind them too, as he searched for oxygen too. Just as they both struck the surface, Typhon took his first chance and burned him to the skin. His top skin, was black like soot as it collapsed deep within the sea in an instant.
He pumped on Ghost, water started to spill out his mouth. He couldn't open his eyes.
" I am proud of you," He let out these words feebly.
"No! You can't leave me, you can't go Ghost, you were my everything. My mentor, my reason for what I am today." Hydra replied, sobbing. His eyes welled up as he saw the blood puddle Ghost was in.
"I swam, Typhon, I really did." He said, his voice cracking until he lost it. And never spoke again.
Hydra held onto his body, as he let out a cry and an unbroken tear stream followed along. He could never get over this, never in his life, he will stop blaming him for he brought him here. Mya and Moka soon joined in and their sorrow is fresh to date. Sea was not regarded as strong after that but rather barbaric, something that eats people and doesn't spare friends.
The irreparable bond was not broken and this was a wound that time could not fill.
Meanwhile, The trio besides the Hydra knew that Ghost would only come back to life by the morning. It was nice to see that the bon between the two has grown and it will take more them physical training to grow as a pair. But mental and emotional bonds need to be formed as well.
