Merari followed one of the teachers to an outdoor courtyard built to resemble an amphitheater. The arena-like court was set below the sitting area, so spells launched by Magicians in the circle would hit a wall instead of a student. Meanwhile, the benches were elevated slightly, giving spectators both a better view and a staircase to climb. To get into the arena, one needed to just enter the fence. The courtyard was one often used by classrooms for practical uses of spells. From putting theory into practice to actual duels between students, the walls were worn and marked from cuts in its stone to scorch marks.

The teacher Merari was tasked with following led him into the arena, explaining to him that he was one of the students who was chosen to prepare their classmates. As she spoke, he learned that he was to be paired with another 3rd Kodor, and that together they would have to face off against a gaggle of students, five to be precise.

She left him at the fence as she walked up to the spectating benches to watch over her students, the teacher's pace brisk and quick. With a sigh, Merari pushed the creaky fence open and walked into the arena. A group of students with badges identifying themselves as 4th Kodor gathered together, peering at their would-be opponent and whispering among themselves. Merari didn't recognize any of them, nor did he have any way of identifying what type of Magician they are. Though, the most important thing at the moment was that his partner has yet to arrive from the looks of it.

His hand drifted to Komori, his fingers brushing the strings before he grabbed the staff-instrument combo. The sooner his partner arrived and the sooner the battle began the better. Merari was always thankful for an excuse to practice his magic against another, though patience wasn't exactly a virtue the young teenager had.

xxxxxx "..."

xxxxxx It was dark. There was noise but it was all too faint to pick up on it. Out of the myriad of sounds, there was one that stuck out. Setekh groaned in displeasure, digging his head deeper into his arms. He was practically touching the desk below him. It was a lot quieter now but he couldn't manage to get back into the state he was in. A state of sleep. In addition to his countless misfortunes in this moment in time, the consistent voice got louder.

xxxxxx "Setekh!"

xxxxxx Along with a sharp pinching feeling on his ear, he was awake. His eyelids were still quite heavy, especially as he lifted his head. The sunlight peering through the windows blazed into his vision. He placed his hands over his eyes to block the rays.

xxxxxx "Class is over, c'mon! The professor is going to be mad if you're late! And it's mandatory this time, Setekh!"

xxxxxx A familiar yet... nagging voice. It was that of one of his many female friends and not one he sleeps with. Isabella was reliable and one of the few people he trusted to an extent. She was also one of the group of students that found him dying on the side of the road. He wouldn't be there if it weren't for her and her other friends.

xxxxxx There was a nasty taste in his mouth. He didn't want to speak since his jaw was still quite stiff from his nap. Setekh had this horrible habit of clenching his teeth in his sleep. It would sometimes leave him with a bit of an ache or lock jaw in the morning. But nothing severe. He took a deep breath and removed his hands from his eyes, letting them adjust to the bright lights. "You're annoying," he groaned, stretching his arms behind his head.

xxxxxx "And you're going to be late. Let's go!"

xxxxxx She tugged on his arm and he chuckled, shaking his head. He managed to force himself up and practically tripped over the desk as she dragged him out of the classroom. The hallways were practically empty. Being late wasn't anything new to Setekh. It was just another part of the day.

xxxxxx They had finally reached the arena. It was the one most students took their kodor tests in or solved scuffles. Isabella went on her way to talk to a teacher and Setekh was left on his own. After getting his own instructions, he was told to wait by a boy he was partnered with. Despite wanting to fight by himself, he made his way over to him.

xxxxxx The young magician had a large instrument resting on his chest, strumming the strings and creating a pleasant melody. Setekh stood behind him, leaning up against the wall behind them. There were a few students on the field that had already begun to fight. His fight would be next and he wondered how this fellow magician would preform. "Hey," he said, gazing over to the musician with an inviting smile on his face, "I'm Setekh, you?" He was unsure how the boy would respond but hoped he was kind.

With gentle fingers, Merari plucked an aimless tune on Komori as he waited for his partner, the staff-slash-instrument resting in his arms like a lyre. The neck part leaned against his shoulder comfortably as he played away his impatience.

"Hey."

Pausing, Merari's finger lingered above the next string before he lowered Komori. Moving the staff so he held it by the neck in his palm, the Green Magician turned to face the other. Using his free hand, he brushed some hair out of his face. Cocking his head slightly to the side, Merari looked up at Setekh with a smile that most would describe as charming.

"I'm Merari. It's a pleasure to meet you," He responded as he regarded the obviously older Magician. Stabbing the teeth of Komori into the ground, the staff held upright as he let go of its neck in favor of stretching out his hand to shake Setekh's in a formal greeting. It wouldn't matter much to the long-haired boy if his newfound partner shook hands with him or not, seeing how he merely extended out his palm simply to be courteous. Regardless of whether or not Setekh took up his offer or not, Merari would step back and grab hold of Komori once more.

"I believe we are due to fight in a moment or two," Merari stated in a soft tone, his red gaze moving from Setekh to glance at the group of student they were to fight. None of them were older than the Water Magician, nor were they younger than Merari himself. From the way they held themselves, they seemed to be confident that either their ability or their number would lead to their victory. "Is there anything you wish to inform me of before we start? Plans, strategies, anything I should look out to avoid from you? Or are we good?" He inquired, his attention returning to Setekh as he spoke. One of his carefully trimmed eyebrows rose to peer at the Magician, waiting for an answer.

Setekh wouldn't have long to reply to Merari's question before the teacher would call out dully for them in a minute or two. Their match was to start, and the time to retrieve any forgotten staves or further exchange words has passed. With a clang, the teacher rung her bell and begun the fight before picking up her pen to take notes of the match.

Immediately, one of the girls from the group of five activated a flight spell, taking to the air and moving closer to the two boys. With a wave of her staff, she cried out, "Fiery Slice!" A burst of flame started out by the tip of her wand, its form stretching in a matter of minutes into a full-fledged spear before it was launched in Setekh's direction.

xxxxxxSetekh was pleased with his reaction. The boy responded in a kind smile and welcomed his introduction with his own. He hadn't heard of him before. The school was too big to know all of the students but he liked to think he knew them all. Merari had extended his hand out to Setekh which made him flinch slightly. With good manners, he took the offer to shake hands. But he made no effort into it and made the least physical contact as possible. Things like that just made him uncomfortable. He was unsure if he was always like that or if it was something new. But it wasn't anything his mind lingered upon.

xxxxxx Merari mentioned their fight was coming up. He would be lying if he said he wasn't excited about it. But it was more of an excitement to get it done and over with. Setekh wasn't the biggest fan of violence since it brought out the worst in him. But it was a simple part of life here in the academy. Even though he would rather learn. Setekh stuck one of the sharp ends of his staff into the ground and leaned against it. "Hopefully we'll get it over with soon." The young magician inquired about any plans or dangers. It took a moment for him to think of some and ran into dead ends. "If they're worth their salt, I might get a bit hectic. But as long as you're fine with a little bit of cold, we should be good." Setekh winked towards him as a friendly gesture.

xxxxxx Just as he was done speaking, the teacher called out for them to participate. Setekh twirled his staff skillfully between his fingers like a baton. It was quite clear he wasn't taking any of this seriously. He stabbed his staff into the ground and waited for the teacher to count down. To his surprise, as soon as the bell rang, one of the girls had shot at him.

xxxxxx "What the-- Tetrakarn!"

xxxxxx He tapped his staff against the ground as quick as he could, bringing a wall of ice between him and the fiery spear. His eyes were wide with shock as he stepped back with a goofy smile. Upon impact with the fire, the wall shattered into harmless shards. A dark expression soon formed on his face as he locked his eyes on her. While he wouldn't hurt her, he wasn't about to lose to her.

xxxxxx "Bufula."

xxxxxx With just a simple mutter to the rukh, a large shard of ice shot out from the tip of his staff as soon as he pointed at her. She underestimated the spell and attempted to block it with her staff. The shard collided with it and shattered into a thick ice that encased her staff and hands. In a panic, she attempted to break the ice off but it resulted in her staff being snapped in two. There was nothing she could do without her catalyst. Though his assault on their opponents wouldn't stop there.

xxxxxx "Mabufu."

xxxxxx Two small shards began to shoot out of his staff at one of the male opponents and the other three were aimed at the girl to disqualify her. However, the boy intercepted them with his own icy spell. Setekh placed his arms up in front of him, being impaled by the leftover cone of ice. Shit... Blood trickled out of the light lacerations on his forearms. He prepared another spell as the student began to cast his own yet again.

xxxxxx "Bufu."

xxxxxx The boy flinched in anticipation of a spell to see nothing appear. Until it hit him. A large ice spike appeared from behind him, stabbing him into the back. Setekh made sure it was angled enough to hurt him but not kill him. The teacher made sure to have him pulled out as well. With two students down, there were only three left. He couldn't help but wonder how powerful his partner was.

Merari quietly noted Setekh's reaction to his hand; it was a small flinch, likely because of something else and not his hand itself. And while the other Magician did shake hands with him, it was a weak one. Again, it didn't seem as if Merari himself was the problem and that something else was bothering the man. Hopefully, it wouldn't get in the way of Setekh's fighting capabilities. Merari was as excited as he would allow himself to be for an event such as this. While he wasn't thrilled by causing pain to others, it was the chance to see how much stronger had become against others in combat. Not only did the Academy freely give him many opportunities to see the practical effect of spells on humans, combat between students was also a refreshing way for him to relieve pent up stress or anger.

As Setekh stabbed what was presumably his staff into the ground, Merari took a step back himself, resting his palm on top of Komori. It would seem that his partner wasn't all too excited about their upcoming match if his comment bore any truth to it, though Merari could honestly care less. The Green Magician stayed quiet as the other thought for a moment, only to reveal that he had nothing other than "I'll get hectic if they're actually good". How reassuring. The wink totally and the fact that he was a Water Magician totally made up for it. But, truth be told, a plan most likely wasn't needed for their match considering the foes they were to be up against.

Thankfully, the moment Setekh stopped talking their teacher shouted for them to begin. Pulling his staff out from its place in the ground, Merari kept a tight grip on Komori's neck while he turned to face his opponents. One of them, a girl, immediately launched an attack, her Fire Spell launching straight towards his partner. For a brief moment, Merari glanced at Setekh to see how he would fair, watching as he created a wall of ice that shattered into the air at the spell.

Turning his attention away from Setekh, Merari lowered his staff and plucked some of the metal strings. Using nimble fingers, he quickly played a simple repeating tune. While it seemed to be an inappropriate gesture, it led Merari to then point Komori's teeth at his chosen foe.

"Canon."

The Sound Rukh, already vibrating and buzzing together from the tune, shot out in a concentrated sound wave at the poor boy at the utter of the word. The spell, true to its name, produced a bang that one would hear from a canon, the sound echoing in the small arena.

Merari didn't pay any attention to the boy he hit with the spell, turning his attention upon a Water Magician who had moved closer to his position and created quite the group of ice shards that would no doubt give him an Icy Chill.

"Kaze Mane."

Merari murmured quietly after lashing Komori from one side to another in response to the girl's spell. A breeze of wind then rushed forwards, creating an updraft that pushed aside the incoming ice shards, knocking them down and rendering them ineffective. Again, Merari lowered his staff and brought it forwards, his fingers now plucking a short but merry tune. His foe, already frustrated that her spell was knocked aside so easily, began to become even more upset at the site of her own competitor playing music.

Just as she raised her staff to cast another spell, Merari whipped forwards Komori and pointed the staff at her while the Sound Rukh buzzed around him in anticipation.

With the called word of, "Gilliard!", the Rukh took the form of a sound wave that was barely visible to the eye. They spell, having had more Magoi pumped into it than usual, slammed like a charging bull into the girl. The force of the spell knocked her off her feet, though it was apparent that while she was hurt, she wasn't too damaged by Gilliard.

Looking back at the remainder of the battle, Merari quickly spotted out the one other that was downed. A moment later, a spike of ice, presumably made by his partner, stabbed another boy straight in the back. He fell to the ground, making four down and one poor boy left.

He didn't stand far from either Setekh and Merari, and seeing how he was the only one of his team standing, the Green Magician saw no reason to drag out their match further. Taking a single step forwards, he raised Komori and waved circularly, its golden teeth pointing directly at the boy.

"Iesar!"

Merari muttered, the Rukh around him kicking up sand as the winds formed, circling around the boy. The winds were quickly manipulated into the small figure of a tornado. The spell lasted only a couple moments, but within that time it had left gashes and cuts in the boy that most definitely hurt. Once the winds had completely dispersed, he fell down, marking the last of their opponents.
