Lexi and the rest of the Canis tribe remained in the cave for two more days before sending a scout to check out the village. The scout returned with a sad look, but it seemed the village was clear, for now. The group gathered up what few supplies they had and made their way back to the village, hoping to scavenge what they could from the ruins of their home. While they were a nomadic tribe, it was difficult to think of losing over half of the tribe and most of their supplies. The trip back was a morose affair, none of them wanting to think about what they would find when they arrived. The first sight of the village made Lexi raise a hand to cover her mouth. Most of the huts had collapsed in a heap of soot and scorched leather. While the leather did not burn as easily, the support beams had been made of wood. The smell coming from the area filled the air with the stench of death and decay. Lexi hung back, Nymeria strapped across her chest as she held the hands of both of Shana’s children, allowing the woman to investigate and find the remains of her mate.

When Shana returned, her face was covered in ash and her cheeks were streaked with tears. Lexi hugged the woman tightly before handing Nymeria off to her, doing a search of her own. She found Onyx’ remains near their hut, one of the few left standing. She collapsed near his body, tears streaming down her face. She knew they could not remain here long and so she tried to keep her mourning brief. The traders could return at any time, it was not safe to remain here or try to rebuild. She pushed to her feet and returned to Shana, the woman giving her an understanding, sad smile.

“You watch the kids, I want to help get everyone buried. Once that is done, I will watch the kids while you help gather whatever remains for supplies.”

Shana nodded in agreement and Lexi gave Nymeria a nuzzle before making her way back into the village with several other villagers. They did what they could to gather the bodies, using pieces of the huts to make stretchers to drag the bodies into the woods. They took their dead and began stripping off the clothing and valuables to return to the remaining families. Normally, they would make small markers before burying the bodies, but there was not much time, so they simply found a small ravine and began putting the bodies there. At least the wild animals in the area would eat well for a bit. As they searched through the huts, Lexi found a bow. One of the hunters gave her a sad look and told her she should keep the weapon, the craftsmanship was impeccable, but the deceased owner had no family to pass it on to. Lexi looped the bow across her back before continuing the grueling, depressing work of clearing the bodies out. A few hours later, the village was cleared of bodies and the group that had been watching the children switched off to begin the process of gathering what they could of the leathers and remaining food.

Lexi bounced Nymeria around as she helped watch the children while Shana helped to gather supplies. Onyx and Leo had both been placed in the small ravine with the rest of the villagers, none of the other tribespeople arguing when the tiger was laid to rest, knowing it had died protecting one of their own. Lexi cried as she watched the children, unable to stop the tears as she waited for the rest of the villagers to return. Finally, as dark fell upon the destroyed village, everyone returned. The leathers from the huts were piled with what food and supplies they could reasonably use and Lexi helped to drag it back to the cave they had been using. By the time they arrived, she was exhausted, all of the work of dragging bodies and supplies around had been draining.

The next days were spent with scouting pairs looking for a new place to move to. While the scouts were out, Lexi spent tireless hours in the woods practicing with her bow. She could not help but feel that if she had been a better aim or had been stronger, she would have been able to save Onyx. Day after day, she made targets on trees and worked on increasing the strength in her arms. With each arrow she released, she pictured the face of the man that had killed Onyx. A week passed with her working on building up her arm strength and focusing on her aim. At the end of the week, another suitable place had been found and she let Shana carry Nymeria as she helped to haul their supplies, knowing it would help to increase her strength even more. They traveled for two days before finding the next cave, they pace forced to a crawl because of the number of children with them. Lexi traded off with Shana, carrying Nymeria as she helped herd the young children along the trail, her eyes ever vigilant. By the time they arrived at the new cave, she was able to carry her portion of supplies without feeling completely exhausted and her arms were gaining more definition.

The cave they had found was much larger, allowing them to take a better inventory of what supplies they had. Lexi used her practice times to also hunt down fresh game, wanting to save the dried meats as long as possible. The creatures in this new area were faster than she was used to, forcing her to work more on her aim and leading the target to account for the travel time of the arrow. It was a great way for her to burn off some of the anger building inside of her and work on her aim at the same time. As she gained more strength, she began practicing with the bow she had found in the village, finding the draw was more difficult than her old bow, but the arrows flew faster and hit harder. Every day, she went out to hunt, focusing on flying beasts. The feathers were useful and she knew that if she could hit a flying target, an enemy on the ground would be easier to hit.

On the ground, an enemy had a limited number of directions they could move, making them a more predictable target. In the air, the enemies could move as they please, making them unpredictable and more challenging. She could not count the number of arrows that had missed their mark during her hunting attempts, but she did not let it discourage her. She simply went out and gathered the scattered arrows before trying again. Her nights were spent with her daughter, Nymeria growing more each day. The infant remained a happy, quiet child, and began sleeping more and more through the night. While Nymeria slept, Lexi worked on making more arrows, using the feathers from the flying game she had killed as fletching. Shana kept a worried eye on her, hating seeing her friend in such a dark place. The only time the anger left Lexi’s eyes was when she held Nymeria, the infant was the one thing keeping Lexi from falling into a place of despair she could not rise from.

The cycle of moving continued for over a month, the group never staying in one place more than a few days before moving on. When they moved, Lexi made it a point to pile on more and more supplies to push her strength. All of the excess weight from her pregnancy was gone, replaced with toned muscles. By the end of a moon cycle, Lexi had nearly doubled the amount she could carry. She also had figured out how to balance carrying Nymeria and supplies without disturbing the infant. Every time they stopped for a few days, Lexi could be found working on hunting down different creatures to feed the group, trying to hunt down a variety of prey to sharpen her skills even further.

She knew humans would be far more difficult to hunt, but she practiced as much as she could on the beasts in whatever area they were in. The rage inside of her did not subside as she practiced and she channeled that anger into pushing herself further. Each day, her arrows flew straighter and farther than the day before. Her aim improved and she found it easier to take down flying creatures. The group was well fed from the amount of game she was bringing in and she made a point to hunt down larger creatures so the supply of leather would grow as well. Most of the sheep had been lost, so the wool the tribe used to make clothing was dwindling and leather became more important.

Lexi cradled Nymeria as the infant fed, a rare smile reserved only for the child crossing Lexi’s face.

“Don’t worry, baby. Mama will make this world safe for you.”

Over a full moon had come and gone since the attack on the village and they continued their travels. They were heading east, a prospect that worried Lexi, but what few merchants they had passed had given news. Apparently, Kou had retreated from the Plains, making it safer to travel without fear. The group had begun looking for a place to settle down until they had to find a winter home. While summer had barely begun, they needed to begin building their supplies to make it through the winter, which meant drying meat and leathers. Most of their crops had been lost in the attack, so while Lexi was not practicing with her bow, she was out helping to gather wild vegetables and fruits. She knew she had gotten stronger, but she also needed to move faster, so she began working on increasing her speed. When she went out to gather food, she would run to wherever a scout had spotted a patch of viable food. Sometimes, she would spend almost half a day running to a location, only to rush through gathering so she could run back.

She hated being away from Nymeria for very long, so she pushed herself to run faster each day. She also found it somewhat freeing, feeling the wind brush her hair back and tickle at the feline ears perched on her head. All of her running also helped build her endurance. Between the running and hauling of supplies, she found it took much longer to become tired than it used to. She was in better shape than she had been in before her pregnancy, all of her childhood pudge melting away to leave behind finely toned muscles and a woman’s curves. Nymeria had left her body broader than before, but in a good way. Her biggest struggle was learning to wrap down her chest while running. She was still heavy with milk and she found out quickly that it hurt to have them bounce while running. Shana had helped her out, using silks to tightly wrap her chest down so she did not jiggle as much when she ran, but after one of her marathons to gather supplies, she was often very sore.

Finally, after what seemed like ages, they found a suitable place to try and settle for more than a week. It took two days to bring all of their supplies over and the next two weeks were spent searching out suitable wood for making huts. Lexi did more than her fair share, helping to haul the tender wood back to the settlement and then helping to shape everything. Her newfound strength was useful when assisting with stretching the leathers over the wooden supports, allowing for a more stable structure. Shana helped her build a large hut, the two women planning on sharing the hut since they had both lost part of their family. Rebuilding the village was an equally sad and hopeful time. Memories of their loss weighed heavily on the group as they rebuilt, but most were hopeful for a more peaceful time.

Lexi could feel her new strength vibrating through her muscles. She felt more ready now for an attack than she had before, but she knew that she would still need more. She had lost her brother and her beast, her protectors. She would never feel comfortable trying to tame another animal. While she had adored Leo, she had never intended to keep him, she did not believe in having pets. Leo had been more like a child to her than a beast. She would figure it out, she just knew she needed every tool at her disposal to protect her daughter. The last month of training would not be enough, she would need to keep pushing herself.

With the loss of Leo as a companion and means of defense, Lexi knew she would need to find another way to amplify her own abilities. For a short period, she had considered trying to use one of the swords they had recovered from the raid of the village, but the large weapons felt awkward in her hands. Growing up, she had never used a weapon with a reach like that before and it just did not feel natural to her. Her bow had been second nature, the years spent with her parents had engrained the stringed weapon into her abilities. While she had loved having Leo at her side, she had never intended to keep the white tiger as a pet and she did not feel right trying to tame another creature. The only other weapon she had ever been comfortable using had been her hunting knife and other daggers. When she had gathered Onyx’ belonging from the ruined village, she had reclaimed the dagger her carried, something their father had given him when he was quite young. Perhaps she should try mastering it. The weapon was small enough that she could see herself becoming more proficient with it than with a sword.

She sat in the hut, humming to Nymeria while she fed, her eyes dancing over Onyx’ dagger. Perhaps, if she learned to use it well enough, it would be like her brother was still there, protecting her. Her mind settled, she brushed her hand across Nymeria’s brilliant red ears, smiling at her daughter lovingly. She would begin training the next day.

One of the other hunter’s in the village offered to help her learn to master the blade left by her brother. Lexi had left Nymeria with Shana while she went to meet with Drago, leaving her bow behind. The older man gave her a warm smile when she approached, the pair moving towards the edge of their new settlement to make sure there was no chance of a stray blade injuring someone unintentionally. They settled down on a large, flat rock and Drago’s warm, gravelly voice drifted on the breeze when he spoke.

“First, you must learn to care for your blade. This dagger is in good shape, you can see that it was well cared for, but do you see this edge? It has begun to dull. So first, you will learn how to sharpen and care for the blade.”

He dug into a small pouch at his waist and pulled out an interesting looking stone. It was smooth and dark grey. He handed her the stone and explained to her the proper way to rub the stone over the valuable metal of the blade to make a sharp edge. He handed her one of his own blades to practice on, understanding her sentimental attachment to her own dagger. He showed her the correct angle to hold the stone at and how much pressure to apply. She was tentative at first, afraid of ruining a good knife. He gave her gentle direction, assuring her that she would not hurt the blade. It took her an hour of practice before he deemed her knowledgeable enough to try on her own blade. The rest of the afternoon was spent on honing the blade to a sharp edge.

Drago tested the edge with his finger before nodding in appreciation. He moved over to a nearby tree and snapped a leaf off the sapling, handing it to her.

“Test it on the leaf. It should slice through without any pressure aside from the weight of the blade.”

Lexi gave him a dubious look but did as he instructed. The knife slid through the leaf like it was nothing, leaving a clean slice in the leaf. Drago chuckled at her delighted laugh, shocked to hear a sound of happiness from the depressed girl.

“Now, you must learn the after care. Metal will rust if exposed to moisture. So after every use, make sure you wipe off any water or fluids on it. Occasionally, you should also use an oil on the blade. While it makes the blade shiny, it is not just to make it look good. The oils will help to repel any moisture the blade may be exposed to. If you do not have a bit of lard or oil, there are certain leaves that secrete a liquid that will suffice.”

Lexi nodded in understanding, having seen her brother often treating the blade. Before they returned to the settlement, Drago showed her a few leaves that would substitute for oil or lard in a pinch and Lexi memorized them before returning to her daughter. Gathering up the precious bundle, she smiled at Nymeria, confidence sparking in her chest. She could do this, she could learn to better protect her daughter, and she would do it with the help of Onyx, even if he was not actually there. By using his knife, Lexi would make sure he was still able to protect their family.

The next day, Drago began showing Lexi the proper way to use a small blade. While she had a rudimentary understanding of daggers, she had mostly used them as a tool in the past, not a weapon.

“First, you must remember that a small blade like this will put you in striking range of anyone you are attacking. It is not like a bow, which you can fire from a distance, keeping yourself safe. A dagger puts you in the opponent’s space, which puts you at a disadvantage, especially if you are used to shooting from a distance.”

Lexi nodded in understanding. While she did not intend for the dagger to become a primary weapon for her, she knew a bow was not good for close combat and she needed more versatility.

“Now, there are a few vital areas you can focus on. Any pressure point is an excellent area to aim for, depending on if you are intending to hurt, maim, or kill. If you are going for a killing blow, the dagger should be aimed for similar areas as where you would aim your arrow. Eyes and necks are usually the most vulnerable. While the heart is a good target, it’s difficult to hit because of the ribs. If you are looking to disarm, aim for the wrists and arms. If you are down and looking to flee, aim for the ankles. Anything soft enough to drag your blade across is a viable target.”

Lexi focused her attention on his lesson, her mind running through the different exposed areas that would be easily accessible.

“Now, I want you to try and stab me.”

Lexi froze but his reassuring look eased her mind a bit. She stepped back before moving forward, raising the dagger over her head to try and stab him. It took him half a breath to slam his forearm against hers, knocking her arm and the blade to the side.

“It is not as easy as it looks. Remember, you are close enough for them to hit you back. If you had been trying to hurt me just now and I had a weapon, I could have easily taken advantage of your exposed side to strike.”

He tapped her side where her arm was raised to demonstrate and she took the lesson to heart. He had her try again, encouraging her to move faster and to keep her limbs close to her body. He explained how a jab was more beneficial than a stab, as it kept her arm close to her body and did not leave her as exposed to retaliation. By the end of the day, he had shown her several basic attacks and run them through with her. Returning to the settlement, she was exhausted and her arms hurt in places she had not expected. The movement of a dagger was entirely different from that of her bow and worked a completely different set of muscles. Snuggling up with her daughter, it did not take Lexi long to drift off.

The next two weeks was spent battling with Drago as the man taught her the intricacies of close-range battle with a dagger. It was exhausting, but exhilarating, just the knowledge that she was bettering her chances to protect her daughter filling her with determination to become better. During one of their mock battles, several of the villagers had come to watch, interested in seeing how the young woman was doing with her drive to become a more deadly force. They all understood her anger at their losses, each of them had lost something in the raid on the village, but not many knew she had already lost not one, but two sets of parents, and had now lost her brother and beast.

Lexi carefully circled Drago, the hand holding her blade was almost relaxed, only a thin thread of tension keeping the dagger in her grip. Her feet shuffled over the ground carefully. She made sure each of her steps kept her frame balanced and centered. Too many times, Drago had managed to knock her on her behind because of a misplaced step or an overextended reach. She had come to think of the small blade as an extension of her arm, the blade like a single, deadly finger at the end of her fist. With a near twirl, she circled around to the side of Drago and her arm punched forward to jab at the man training her. He swayed gracefully to the side, but not far enough, and the blade left a scratch. Lexi grinned, pleased with her victory but remaining focused. The last time she had lost focus, Drago had knocked her down and given her a stern reminder.

Instead of moving away, she took advantage of his sway to sweep her leg out. With his body already off center, all it took was a small yank to drag his foot out and he was tumbling to the ground. Without wasting a moment, she moved to straddle him, placing her dagger at his throat. When he grinned up at her, she began to move off of him in victory before feeling a prick against her side. While she had dropped him to the ground, he was still ready and had his blade in a good position to deal massive damage to her side. With a curse, she stood and helped him up.

“You did well, Lexi. You managed to get me on the ground, at least. I think our next lesson will be on teaching you to not show your movements.”

Lexi chuckled and nodded, knowing she still had a way to go before she was anywhere near the man’s skill level. The group that had gathered all clapped, Shana bouncing Nymeria on her hip as Lexi approached. With a bright smile, Lexi swept Nymeria into her arms, snuggling against the happy baby. She knew she was just a little bit closer to being able to protect the joyous bundle.

The next week was spent chasing Drago through a small patch of trees and learning to move without being heard in the nearly silent area. She had to be light on her feet to avoid snapping twigs, which she was good at, as a hunter. However, as a hunter, she had time to be slow and cautious with her movements, now she needed to learn to prowl about without a sound while moving fast enough to chase something. The older man gave her a run for her money, able to disappear in a flash only to reappear behind her, blade in hand. It was easier to learn this part than to wield the dagger, as it was simply a faster version of stalking animals to hunt.

By the end of the week, she was still not able to keep up with the man training her, but she was able to move at a great speed through the branches without disturbing the small birds and raccoons found there, often startling a poor bird in its nest. She had found that mama birds did not appreciate being snuck up on, she had done this once and gotten a face full of angry, pecking, scratching bird. She had come away from the experience covered in scratches and bleeding pecks and Shana had chuckled as she helped clean the wounds.

While Lexi knew she still had a long way to go, she had improved her abilities massively with her training with Drago. If she could keep improving her skills, she would be better able to keep her daughter safe.

Drago was satisfied with Lexi’s progress with the silent running and kept working with her by sparring each day. However, he felt she could vary her range of attacks by learning to use the dagger as a projectile. He took her outside of the settlement where he had marked several trees with small markings. Lexi initially snorted at the short distance, used to hitting such small targets from much farther away. Drago simply gave her a patient smile and then nodded at her to try to hit them.

The first throw ended with the dagger lodged in the dirt about a meter in front of her, the hilt of the blade seeming to mock her from its place in the ground. With a grunt, she snagged the blade from its resting place and moved back into position, glaring at Drago. The older man chuckled and nodded back to the target. This time, the knife made it a bit farther, but bounced and skittered across the ground, the blade not even embedding. Lexi stomped over to grab the blade up before moving back into position, glowering at her mentor.

“What am I doing wrong?”

Drago chuckled and moved to stand behind her, shifting her body slightly.

“You are trying to fire the dagger like you would an arrow, using your body as the bow. Unfortunately, that is not quite how it works. For throwing, you are still launching it, but a bow has a different way of forcing the projectile forward.”

He altered her grip on the blade before moving out of the way again.

“That should help. The key is not trying to throw the blade so it does not flip in the air. While you may be able to master that in time, right now, focus on simply trying to get the dagger to fly and hit the target, regardless of if it is the hilt or the blade. We will go from there.”

She spent the rest of the day trying to hit the small target, not stopping until her arm ached and the hilt of the dagger bounced off the target. Drago patted her shoulder with a proud smile.

“We will stop for the night. Tomorrow, meet me back here.”

Day after day, Lexi would meet Drago for a small spar and then he would work on showing her how to properly throw the blade. It took three days for her to be able to have the blade strike the tree. It took another three days before she could hit the target consistently. After a week, Drago began moving her back, little by little, and she learned how to alter her throw to account for distance. The next week was spent with Drago teaching her different types of throws that could be useful in different situations, based on the position of her body and the location of her theoretical opponent.

Lexi found herself practicing any time she was not gathering supplies or taking care of Nymeria. The girl was just starting to be able to lift her head and was still as quiet as the day she had been born. While Nymeria slept, Lexi worked on her throwing skills, aiming for a support beam in an unoccupied part of the tent. When the dagger would miss, she would promise Shana she would repair the leather. By the time she was hitting more than missing, she had mended the cuts in the hut too many times to count, but her aim kept improving. Lexi settled in next to the bundle of furs and leathers which contained her daughter, smiling as she added another method of defense to her growing list.

Daily, Lexi worked on using her speed and stealth to move silently as she hunted, further honing how close she could get to animals before being noticed. During one of her training sessions, she caught sight of a snake as it lashed out and bit into a mouse, wrapping its long body around the tiny, paralyzed creature before devouring it whole. It reminded her of when she had dabbled with using poisons before. She knew it could be a valuable addition to her arsenal and she vowed to talk to the herbalist in the settlement. While she knew how to milk a snake for its venom, she knew a snake was not always available, but there were several herbs available that would produce similar effects.

The next morning, she rose early to seek out the help of the herbalist, who gave her a small book. In the book was carefully drawn pictures and descriptions of the plants and what they could do. She thanked the herbalist and returned to her hut, strapping Nymeria to her chest before heading for the woods. The day should be relatively danger free, so she felt confident bringing the infant along. Nymeria seemed to enjoy going for walks in the woods, her tiny hands grabbing wildly for the passing leaves and flowers. Lexi chuckled at the baby, handing her a leaf she knew was harmless. The baby promptly stuck the leaf in her mouth, making Lexi giggle softly. As they walked, she kept an eye out for the plants in the journal, carefully picking a few that she found and tucking them into pouch. She was cautious, using a cloth to gather the plants to keep the sap off her fingers so she would not accidentally touch Nymeria with the potentially dangerous contents.

By the end of the day, her pouch was full and Nymeria was sleeping soundly in her sling. When she returned to the hut, she got Nymeria settled in her basket of furs before grabbing a small bit to eat. The dwindling light in the hut made it difficult to read the book, so she curled up around Nymeria’s basket and fell into an exhausted sleep. The next morning, she waited until Shana and the kids went out to do chores before she began experimenting with the herbs she had gathered. Most of what she had found were mildly poisonous, enough to slow someone down a bit, but even a small drop in speed was an advantage when fighting. One of the herbs she came across was described in the journal to give the afflicted with visions and she set those to the side. For now, she wanted to focus on the poisonous aspects that would slow her opponents.

For days, she worked on mixing up the herbs, boiling them in a special pot to keep from accidentally contaminating their food. She kept a small vial of antidote nearby which the herbalist had been gracious enough to provide. Most of making a poison was trial and error and then testing the poisons. As she did not want to try it on wildlife, the results often fickle when applied to humans, she was forced to test the poisons on herself. After three trips to the herbalist with unexplained effects, she started making the poisons in the herbalist’s tent to save herself the trip. Each time she tested one, she would scribble her results in the journal so she could track what was most effective. By the end of the week, she had learned to mix a variety of poisons to coat her blade with that had a wide range of effects. She was always careful to wash her hands thoroughly before handling Nymeria, but she was satisfied with her progress by the end of the week.

With a small supply of poison pouches now securely tied to a belt with her dagger, the next week was spent toying with the herbs that caused visions. First hand, Lexi got to see the effects of the visions, some terrifying, some beautiful enough to make her weep. Shana did her best to keep the children away from her, knowing that the herbs would make her unpredictable. Shana also made sure Nymeria was fed with goat’s milk, Lexi fearing that experimenting with the poisons would taint her own supply of milk. By the time she had finished testing all the different effects, Lexi had been through a whirlwind of side effects and emotions, but she had a much better idea of how she wanted to utilize the different herbs with her weapons.

Feeling even more confident with herself, Lexi returned to training with Drago, the man meeting her every night for a quick spar. He walked her through a variety of different techniques, both offensive and defensive, trying to make sure she was as equipped as possible. While he feared the rage in her mind would consume her, her attachment to Nymeria kept her grounded and he could understand her rabid desire to protect the only family she had left.

Each day, they tried out a new technique, first working on dodges, sways and rolls that would protect her from harm, and then moving on to different approaches to attacks, stabs, jabs, and slices. She became more competent each day, using her unique flexibility and balance to twist the moves he taught her and make them her own. Once he felt she had mastered the basic attacks, he showed her blocks and how to best maneuver her body to knock incoming attacks away. While the blade was not large enough to parry, really, she could still use her forearms to strike away attacks and use her hands to twist blades away from an opponent. Methodically, day after day, for weeks, he honed her skills until she was able to best him in at least half of their spars. She showed incredible potential and dedication and it was not long before he felt he had nothing else to teach her. Anything else, she would need to find a new mentor or simply pick up through practical application. He knew she was not intending to use these new skills for the typical beast and he did the best he could to show her how to hunt and hurt humans, despite it going against his peaceful nature. While he took no joy from harming humans, sometimes it was necessary.

After their latest spar, he held up his hands in surrender.

“Lexiara, I have nothing else to teach you, I fear. You have been an excellent student and learned well, but this is as far as my knowledge goes. You have learned to be silent, to deliver death swiftly, to throw a weapon that can kill from seemingly nowhere, and you have learned to mix enough poisons that I fear for anything you decide to hunt.”

Lexi gave a small smile, appreciating the praise, but knowing that he did not approve of her intentions for her newfound skills. That he had taught her this long spoke volumes about how much he cared about her wellbeing. She gave him a tight hug, thanking the man for all of his guidance. She knew she had a long road ahead of her, but she felt more prepared than ever. She would use what Drago had taught her and she would hunt down the slave traders, every last one of them, if she had to. She would make this world safer for her daughter. If that made her a monster, so be it. Nymeria would never know the pain she went through of losing family over and over again because of some selfish, greedy men.
