Azix reflected on his spells as he sat in the safe house he shared with Garret. It had been a few days since he promoted Lavicus, putting faith in the Grumptoes and hoping he wouldn't regret it. If anything they did leaked, there would be problems, but he would take countermeasure for that soon. For now, he had to deal with his limited offensive abilities. At the moment, he felt confident with his utility spells.

He remembered the joy at burning the flesh to a crisp on Manius' face. There was a joy to using focused beams of light. Toying with an idea for a better beam of light, he decided he would try mixing a few tricks into a new spell to add to his arsenal. Blinding Manius' fiance and the slave trader he fought with Tai, had been very effective. His Flicker was a personal favorite spell to use and he hoped that the same concept would be effective in a beam.

The first task as to expand the beam of light into a wide, long beam that could hit multiple targets. He cleared his mind and focused on envisioning the beam, making it solid in his mind. For the next couple days, he would practice creating larger and larger beams. The work was mentally exhausting and he would be fatigued at night. He would fall asleep strengthening the mental image of the beam in his head. The larger his beams got, the quicker he seemed to exhaust himself, and it took a week and a half of diligent training and mediation to accomplish his goal.

He was finally satisfied with the size and speed of his new light beam. Now came the second part, incorporating the blinding effect of Flicker. While, casting such a large beam wasn't as great of a drain, adding the intensity required to flind someone made it exhausting. Azix continued his training regiment of solidfying the image of the spell in his mind, willing a duplicate in reality through commands to the Ruhk. Meditation and practice consumed his days, only taking breaks for a short time every few days to get reports from the Grumptoes.

Azix had to take frequent breaks as he grew more adept at brighter beams, they would blind him for a few moments after. He would have liked to use his Light Vision, but that would have taken a greater toll on his mental fatigue. Plus, it was the only way to effectively gauge if he had obtained the desired effect. He had a mild concern that he might be doing permanent damage to his retina, but it was a concern easily shrugged off. He did notice that repeated beams had burned the grass where he practiced.

Two weeks of incorporating the blinding brightness to the beam paid off, Azix could handle the strain. Proud of his accomplishment, he decided to take a break from training and visit the Grumptoes in the morning. There would be time to create new spells later, for now he had a terrible headache and felt the lack of a rested mind. The constant draining had taken its toll on him.
