Mori never truly thought he’d end up within the vast expanse of land that was the Jade mountains again for the foreseeable future, but, still trying to get accommodated to this world, he had to travel where the work was. One of the various pointers he’s gotten from the multitude of common people has talked to is to travel to the mountains where the more simple folk live. He’d only assumed monks and those of religious origin lived with the great Jade peaks due to his origin from there, but apparently tribes and such had occupied the mountains all the same, being silent neighbors to the abbeys that lived atop them.

The directions the young monk were given weren’t exactly up to par with what he was used to, usually there was some sort of landmark that he’d look for, but this time, he was just told to follow the road east of the village at the edge of the mountain-chain and you’d eventually come across one of the many tribes. Although something told him he should’ve been more suspicious of this advice prior to his journey, he’d make the trip all the same, do now, think later sort of situation. The people of this land have yet to give him a reason to not trust their word, so he’d continue to do as he was asked.

Almost like clockwork, Mori would eventually come across a forest that he’d been through before. It was the one he had to walk through on his trek from home to one of Kou’s cities. The dirt path seemed so unfamiliar considering he’d walked upon it about a month prior, something about it was making his head hazy. Before entering the forest itself, Mori would take a glance at what seemed to be the border of it, and all of the fauna and plant life he’d been picking within his youth popped out like a red ball rolling through green grass. For old times sake, and the fact that he knew which plants were poisonous and which ones weren’t, he’d go gathering, filling his pockets filled with plants. Unbeknownst to him, an onlooker would find what he was doing to be rather curious, watching him from one of the various nearby natural sight-shielding bushes to mask their presence from Mori.

Mori would almost seem like a natural, stuffing his pockets with various herbs and spices, each having their own purposes, whether it be the plant could be grinded with water into a medicinal ointment or it just brought out the flavor in certain foods. They would serve as comfortabilities for Mori’s continuing journey. The eyes that were cast upon Mori although, noticing that the boy didn’t have any provisions other than a staff mounted atop the massive backpack he wore, would slowly arise from the bush, making a unique rustling sound. This would almost immediately alert Mori, and he’d spin around hastily in response, only to see a stone spear pointed in his direction.

Seeing this, Mori would almost immediately throw his hands into the air in order to portray the act of surrender to his potential attacker, flicking all the herbs and spices he held into the air to expose his open palms. The stalker was a woman of tanned skin and dark hair who wore a boar skin around her upper and lower body. She seemed rather relaxed for the situation that she’d put herself in, but Mori was already sweating bullets.

Observing that Mori was 100% truly not a threat at this point, she’d raise her spear and plant the blunt end of it into the dirt beside her. Using an idle hand, she’d turn around and motion Mori to follow her.

The woman that Mori had found.. or rather the woman that had found Mori scavenging the area for plants, had motioned Mori to follow her through the forest. This, most likely being one of the signs Mori was looking for in terms of work, would follow along, not exactly thinking of the repercussions. However, the woman had been showing her back to him, so she was either really powerful or super trusting of him, a complete and utter stranger(his masters used to do both to him in the combat circle).

His feet trampling on the local plant-life as he followed behind her, Mori would slowly be led back to the main camp of the tribe. It was evident that he was getting close due to the smoke that leached into the sky, which Mori had apparently not seen before walking within the confines of the forest, he proceeded to make a mental note that smoke usually meant civilization of some sort. Their camp was made up of a couple of pitched cloth tents, decorated with various designs and embroidery surrounding a large fire. One tent was notably bigger than the others, and the flap of which was open to reveal a shoddily built wooden table bordered with about six men, all sitting neatly around it. Mori would recognize their sitting positions as that of meditation, and the faint smell of an incense was understandable.

Before Mori could take another step towards the camp however, the woman would turn around and inch her spear towards him once more before tapping the end of it onto the floor twice, extending her hand with an open palm in his direction, signalling him to stop. She would then walk within the tent where the meditating men sat and would make a grunting sound, awakening the attention of the men before motioning in the direction of Mori. Awkwardly smiling, Mori would raise one of his arms to give a subtle wave at the men within the tent. Autonomously, all of the men would stand in a hurried fashion, grabbing a bunch of spears saddled beside them, not before seen by Mori and would uniformly exit the tent and surround Mori. Mori would in return, raise his arms once more in the same surrendering fashion that he’d done with the woman who’d caught him off-guard the first time.

The men would grunt a couple of times before noticing a bundle of herbs still shoved within his pocket. One of the more elder of the men would approach before digging within Mori’s pockets, producing the various herbs Mori had picked earlier, rubbing them between his index finger and thumb. The last patch of herbs Mori had grabbed were those of medicinal nature, and they easily ground into a white powder. Making a grunt of approval, the elder would signal the men to raise their spears and guide Mori to turn within his direction.

Mori, doing as he was directed, would look the elder in the eye before slowly lowering his hands back down to his sides. The elder, looking at the medallion placed upon Mori’s chest, would give a look of recognition.

“Of the Shaolin tribe atop the mountain, are we?” the elder would ask, and Mori, surprised that the man could speak the common tongue, would nod in response. “You look hungry, hunt with men, and you feast with us for night, token of gratitude for protecting tribe in past.”

Mori knew the monks of his monastery had a reputation of helping those that needed it, but always for a price; it was clear that his temple had helped these people in the past. Mori would nod his head in acceptance before motioning his finger in the direction of one of the extra spears he’d spotted resting against one of the tents. One of the men would toss him the weapon, and he’d be off to catch a piece of meat within the wilds.

The tribesman did a majority of the tracking, and ended up putting the final blow upon the boar. Mori was simply accredited with distracting it long enough for them to get to it.

It took the young monk and hunters a few hours to get around to making a kill on a good animal. Most hunters had opted to hunt for smaller game, such as rabbits or fish, but Mori wanted to go for gold, and another hunter had the same idea. They split up into small groups, Mori and this fellow hunter, the woman that’d originally brought him to the camp of the tribe before, hunted together. Mori was by no sense capable of tracking anything, to which he relied on the young woman, and when she found her mark, she definitely made it known. After missing her original spear throw, Mori had tustled a bit with the boar in hand-to-hand combat.. hand-to-hoof combat and wrestled it into place as the woman lunged forward with the spear Mori had dropped and ended the hog’s life.

The scream that the woman had made had attracted the attention of the other hunting groups in the area and they rushed to the direction in which the birds flew from their trees. The pig wheezed and whined about the spear lodged within it’s jugular, but with a quick twist of Mori’s spear, the tribal woman finished the game off. The other hunters soon arrived, rabbits and smaller game roped to their belts, and would help Mori and the woman carry their kill back to the camp.

Upon returning, Mori would almost instantly return his spear, resting it upon the same tent that one of the fellow hunters had tossed it to him from earlier in the day. He was grateful that he was able to use it to help out the tribe with their feast, and about to be more grateful because he was about to partake in it. Like clockwork, they prepared the carcass of the boar for feast, sticking it gruesomely upon a stick and placing it above the hot fire that the camp had surrounded. Throughout the next couple of hours, it would slowly be turned by various people, slowly cooking it above the bonfire. Using Mori’s herbs and spices, the camp would slowly yet additively add a little handful to the roast every now and again, which would singe and collect upon the cooking flesh of the boar.

It almost looked too delicious and the young monk, never having a taste of the delicacy that is hot meat within his life, or as far back as he can remember, lamented in the smells that would perfume his nostrils. His taste buds yearned and seemed to crawl within his mouth, almost wanting to go as far to lick the still-cooking roast, but he would adapt a meditative state and maintain DISCIPLINED! A few hours would pass, and although Mori was unfamiliar with the speak of the tribe to everyone besides the elder, he seemed to get along well with their populace.

After a long wait, the roast was finally done, and Mori would dig in as soon as he could, devouring everything that was put in front of him. It was as if he was a starving vulture who hadn’t filled it’s belly in weeks. What a beautiful slaughter. The meat, freshly cooked, was something he’d never experienced in his life, and something that he felt, he could never be without again.

Afterwards, the tribe would bid Mori farewell as he grabbed his massive backpack and headed on his way, gifted material goods and tribal gifts to help him along his journey.
