‘Are you sure that you’re feeling fine, Sukh?’ As the sun broke through the white-clouded skies, he saw Kut and Zubaidah riding alongside an Ash Company caravan on the Kavir sands, ‘Of course, Kay.’ ‘If you’re still in shock, that’s entirely reasonable. It’s only been a few days since Darius was injured.’ ‘Believe me, Kay, I’m fine. I’m more surprised that he’s fine after taking that explosion point-black.’ Seeing how Kut looked back at her, just as concerned for him as she was, Zubaidah remembered that Darius and Kut had once been co-mentors, ‘He’s already sent me word about how well Salleh was taking care of him. I’m sure that the Saffat will make sure Darius comes back somehow better than before.’ ‘If you’re sure…’
‘So, uhh, how’d you get Salleh out of that whole jam?’ ‘Oh, you mean after Kavan detained him? Well, that wasn’t anything hard to be honest, just took me two days tops. I found some evidence proving that Salleh couldn’t have used wisp oak, since Saffat hasn’t seen a crop of wisp oak in years. It’s the same with Amakh and Lamet, and none of his official or personal accounts show payments from abroad.’
‘What about the involvement of, well, you know.’ ‘Oh, yeah, Fadahl and Nazairi…’ She looked into the sun-soaked distance in pained silence, ‘Well, apparently they hadn’t been seen at the Saffat branch for months.’ ‘Why do you think they did it?’ ‘I don’t know…’
‘Did I push her into this? You know, after we duelled for the title of Hashashin grandmaster and all. She never spoke to me again after that…’ She paused again, looking back towards the radiant sun, ‘Of course, I know that Fadahl wasn’t too bothered. He said that himself!’ ‘But he always said that it never mattered what he thought. Only what she did…’
‘When we were attacked in Palaiz, I looked into the memories of that assassin…’ ‘And she was there?’ ‘She was giving him orders to take out Achaemenes.’ ‘You think she’s obstructing our attempts to open relations between Amakh and Isadora?’ ‘I can’t think of any other reason.’
‘Think about it in terms of the duel and the funeral. Both times she wanted to take down myself and the Amakh branch. She even enlisted the Isadora against the other Hashashin. It’s like she doesn’t care about the Hashashin, just seeing our plans for Parthevia fail.’
‘Then we gotta make sure that this plan succeeds, huh?’ ‘You make it sound so simple - ’ ‘It is simple.’
‘We cut this deal between Ghanim and Artarushu, and we’ve won. We just gotta keep them safe till all the paperwork’s signed, right? Once that’s done, she’s plain lost.’
‘But that’s the problem, we don’t know when danger will strike. It could be here on the road, during the meeting or right now without us even knowing. She’s more dangerous than anyone we have ever faced because she knows how we think.’ ‘No, she knows how the Hashashin think.’
After another day of horseback travel, and no obstructions, the Hashashin caravan arrived in small but beautiful Nirraz. A border-town surrounded by palm-trees, and harbouring one of the few oases in the southern Kavir desert, Nirraz was largely unaffected by the Sunset Bay treaty. Unlike Palaiz and Salehi, which had both seen massive transformations with the new Parthevian politics, this town had maintained an atmosphere of relaxation and laziness. If there was somewhere better for a quiet meeting between the Isadora merchants and the Ash Company, well, Zubaidah could not find it.
And so, once their horses were stabled, they were led to the local merchants’ guild in Nirraz’ town centre, where Achaemenes joined them, escorted here by one of Darius’ squadrons, ‘Good to see you, Achaemenes!’ ‘Right on time, lady Mansur!’ ‘You seem in good spirits?’ ‘You mean, in spite of last weeks’ events? Well, I’ve found this sort of event to be fairly routine since hiring Jawhab. And thanks to sir Darius, I am entirely unharmed - and ready for business. I owe him that much after he put his life on the line for us both.’
‘Speaking of which, how is the honourable Irdani faring?’ ‘I’ve recommended him to a good doctor.’ ‘Ah, one of…’ Achaemenes looked around conspiratorially, before whispering to Zubaidah, ‘…the Hashashin?’ ‘Indeed.’ ‘It’s nice to know we have them here for the meeting. I wanted to bring Jawhab and the Ganzak Three, but they’re dealing with some problems on the Saffat-Isadora coast. Puts my mind at ease that we have people just as capable.’
As she saw their bodyguards, Hashashin of course, slip away into the shadows, Zubaidah nodded towards Achaemenes, ‘Are we all ready?’ And he returned it with a playful wink after looking at Nirraz's town-square, ‘I believe we are! I just saw Ghanim’s coach park outside, and Artarushu has been here for the past week. If you’re also ready, then I think it's time that we join them in the conference-room.’

‘But I feel like I don’t know anything about them anymore.’
‘I get you…’
‘I mean, the Nazairi we knew couldn’t hurt a fly.’
