Job Info:

Are you sure that you’re feeling fine, Sukh?’ As the sun broke through the white-clouded skies, he saw Kut and Zubaidah riding alongside an Ash Company caravan on the Kavir sands, ‘Of course, Kay.’ ‘If you’re still in shock, that’s entirely reasonable. It’s only been a few days since Darius was injured.’ ‘Believe me, Kay, I’m fine. I’m more surprised that he’s fine after taking that explosion point-black.’ Seeing how Kut looked back at her, just as concerned for him as she was, Zubaidah remembered that Darius and Kut had once been co-mentors, ‘He’s already sent me word about how well Salleh was taking care of him. I’m sure that the Saffat will make sure Darius comes back somehow better than before.’ ‘If you’re sure…

So, uhh, how’d you get Salleh out of that whole jam?’ ‘Oh, you mean after Kavan detained him? Well, that wasn’t anything hard to be honest, just took me two days tops. I found some evidence proving that Salleh couldn’t have used wisp oak, since Saffat hasn’t seen a crop of wisp oak in years. It’s the same with Amakh and Lamet, and none of his official or personal accounts show payments from abroad.

What about the involvement of, well, you know.’ ‘Oh, yeah, Fadahl and Nazairi…’ She looked into the sun-soaked distance in pained silence, ‘Well, apparently they hadn’t been seen at the Saffat branch for months.’ ‘Why do you think they did it?’ ‘I don’t know…

But I feel like I don’t know anything about them anymore.

I get you…

I mean, the Nazairi we knew couldn’t hurt a fly.

Did I push her into this? You know, after we duelled for the title of Hashashin grandmaster and all. She never spoke to me again after that…’ She paused again, looking back towards the radiant sun, ‘Of course, I know that Fadahl wasn’t too bothered. He said that himself!’ ‘But he always said that it never mattered what he thought. Only what she did…

But this isn’t just about that fight or the funeral, is it?

When we were attacked in Palaiz, I looked into the memories of that assassin…’ ‘And she was there?’ ‘She was giving him orders to take out Achaemenes.’ ‘You think she’s obstructing our attempts to open relations between Amakh and Isadora?’ ‘I can’t think of any other reason.

Think about it in terms of the duel and the funeral. Both times she wanted to take down myself and the Amakh branch. She even enlisted the Isadora against the other Hashashin. It’s like she doesn’t care about the Hashashin, just seeing our plans for Parthevia fail.

Then we gotta make sure that this plan succeeds, huh?’ ‘You make it sound so simple - ’ ‘It is simple.

We cut this deal between Ghanim and Artarushu, and we’ve won. We just gotta keep them safe till all the paperwork’s signed, right? Once that’s done, she’s plain lost.

But that’s the problem, we don’t know when danger will strike. It could be here on the road, during the meeting or right now without us even knowing. She’s more dangerous than anyone we have ever faced because she knows how we think.’ ‘No, she knows how the Hashashin think.

But we’re not just Hashashin.

-----

After another day of horseback travel, and no obstructions, the Hashashin caravan arrived in small but beautiful Nirraz. A border-town surrounded by palm-trees, and harbouring one of the few oases in the southern Kavir desert, Nirraz was largely unaffected by the Sunset Bay treaty. Unlike Palaiz and Salehi, which had both seen massive transformations with the new Parthevian politics, this town had maintained an atmosphere of relaxation and laziness. If there was somewhere better for a quiet meeting between the Isadora merchants and the Ash Company, well, Zubaidah could not find it.

And so, once their horses were stabled, they were led to the local merchants’ guild in Nirraz’ town centre, where Achaemenes joined them, escorted here by one of Darius’ squadrons, ‘Good to see you, Achaemenes!’ ‘Right on time, lady Mansur!’ ‘You seem in good spirits?’ ‘You mean, in spite of last weeks’ events? Well, I’ve found this sort of event to be fairly routine since hiring Jawhab. And thanks to sir Darius, I am entirely unharmed - and ready for business. I owe him that much after he put his life on the line for us both.

Speaking of which, how is the honourable Irdani faring?’ ‘I’ve recommended him to a good doctor.’ ‘Ah, one of…’ Achaemenes looked around conspiratorially, before whispering to Zubaidah, ‘…the Hashashin?’ ‘Indeed.’ ‘It’s nice to know we have them here for the meeting. I wanted to bring Jawhab and the Ganzak Three, but they’re dealing with some problems on the Saffat-Isadora coast. Puts my mind at ease that we have people just as capable.

As she saw their bodyguards, Hashashin of course, slip away into the shadows, Zubaidah nodded towards Achaemenes, ‘Are we all ready?’ And he returned it with a playful wink after looking at Nirraz's town-square, ‘I believe we are! I just saw Ghanim’s coach park outside, and Artarushu has been here for the past week. If you’re also ready, then I think it's time that we join them in the conference-room.

Inside the conference room, two men sat in their respective corners with a small party of armed guards in their shadows. Word of the attacks turned the space into a silent war zone. Anything could happen yet there was nothing that could be done. So the two remained silent.

Ghanim had his eyes glued to a book flipping sporadically through the pages. Several scraps filled with notes, numbers, and currency symbols littered his space. His eyes were weighted down with bags picked up from an over alerted night. With a pen in hand, heavy scribbling cut through the heavy air despite the occasional look from Artarushu.

For Artarushu, he rested his hands over his mouth, clasped. His eyes drifted around the room, not letting a single movement escape. So when he eventually came across Ghanim, he struggled to move on. There was no pattern to the man's pointless scribbling. However, he did not the one to inject words into the atmosphere first. So brief glares were the only tool in his arsenal to signal his disappointment.

Achaemenes was first to interrupt the silence between Ghanim and Artarushu, marching into the conference-room with typical Palaiz swagger, ‘Good to see you, as ever,’ He would tap the table quietly to get the first merchant’s attention, ‘Ghanim,’ He would then bow towards the second merchant with evident respect, ‘Artarushu,’ With all eyes on him, he would divert their gazes towards the doorway, ‘May I introduce you to the lady Mansur:

And out strode Zubaidah, bedecked in a jet-black pantsuit, accompanied by Kut.

Thank you, Achaemenes, and good day to you, dear sirs. My name is Sukhainah bint Atta. You may know me better as Zubaidah Mansur.’ With the click of a finger, a steward garbed in white would deliver wine and cloud-like biscuits onto the conference-table, while a secretary delivered stacks of dog-eared files to Zubaidah herself, ‘I am here on behalf of the Ash Company to discuss the expansion of trade between the Amakh and Isidora regions. As you well know, the Rostam road has been the main avenue for trade in Parthevia for centuries, but banditry and taxation from shahzada Gawhur have made all attempts to revitalise the Rostam road near impossible.

As such, the Ash Company has devised a solution for both issues; of bandits and Parsif’s taxes. If these solutions are implemented, we can guarantee that trade between Amakh and Isidora will increase your annual profits by three or four times at the very least. All that we require in return is the promise of cooperation between the trade-guilds in Khabis and Parsif, which you two represent.’ Eyeing the three merchants one by one, Zubaidah would decided to include the next talking-point at the same time, ‘Oh, and we have some other incentives, of course.

Ghanim lowered his book to ease his heavy eyes up at the two newcomers to the meeting. Achaemenes familiar and pleasant sight to see. Had the events of late not been so dire, the man would have gladly left the company of his own shadow to shake hands with him. The best he could do was give the man a small smile. That formality would erase away with the introduction of that woman. Who she was did not matter.

"Zubaidah Mansur, Zubaidah Mansur..." The man picked up his pen and tapped it on the table feinting ignorance of the name. In truth he had been briefed on this woman about a dozen times now. It was impressive how quickly she had grown to influence her Ash Company. It was unfortunate that such praise did not bring one to the top. "I recall reading a scroll or two with that name."

"Nonsense Ghanim, games are for private meetings. Let us speak more openly today. Its not everyday the three of us come together, especially for something more... interesting." Artarushu had put on his smile well before Achaemenes came into sight. "Lady Mansur, I must apologize in advance. I'm sure you are aware of our situation. Some find it harder to take on anything new when your gambling blood not coin."

Ghanim shot a glare at Artarushu. "Games or not, I fail to see how you or Achaemenes could be so joyful over this. Now would be the perfect chance for something to happen. With an outsider in the mix, I really do hope see some sanity in this." The man's breathing quickened but a female assistant rested her hand on his shoulder before placing a silver tray with matching cup and plate of grapes with cheese cubes. "But yes, let's get to the point Lady of Ash Company."

With a sip of his cup, he snapped his fingers and 3 more trays with matching arrangements made their way to the other parties. "I won't waste our time with games. Expansion never hurts the prepared. Unlike Artarushu, I am always prepared. However, I fail to see what the Ash company has that either of us three doesn't in regards to our tax and thief issue. Had you not rode here with Achaemenes, I would have seen you out here and now."

Artarushu clapped at the end of Ghanim's little speech. "Wonderfully said. Except the parts that weren't but this isn't about envious you are of my growth. I personally love the idea, but Ghanim is right. I can get ideas from those in the slums dirt cheap. Details are the main course here my lady. Though I do enjoy dessert first. What are these incentives?"

As the merchant Ghanim and Artarushu responded to Zubaidah’s request, herself and Achaemenes remained silent. Achaemenes began sampling the almond biscuits, knowing that the Isidora merchants were no longer interested in him. It was up to Zubaidah to ensure that Ghanim and Artarushu would agree to their proposal:

I understand your scepticism, dear sirs, but let me deal with your concerns one at a time. First of all, there is the matter of banditry on the Rostam road. As you say, master Artarushu, they have made this a matter of blood and not just coin. Well, in order to combat this, I have taken a two-pronged approach.

Prong one, we limit the number of people going into banditry by creating well-paid jobs across Amakh and Isidora, and stimulating the economy of poorer neighbourhoods along the Rostam road in particular. We have already funded a preliminary job programme in Tisifun, which has decreased unemployment in the surrounding neighbourhoods by thirty percent, while crime-rates have decreased by a similar percentage. In order to stave off crime long-term, I propose that we set up trade-schools run by the Parthevian merchant guilds so that we can teach useful and employable skills while maintaining the guild workforce at the same time.

In the short-term, however, we will generate revenue to put into the local Rostami economy by promoting historical tourism. As you may know, the Ash Company has been excavating several archaeological sites along the Rostam road, mostly related to Kosrovian Parthevia. Thanks to recent events, there has been a surge of local and Reiman interest in Parthevian history, which has become easy to facilitate due to the installation of new roads from Reim into Tisifun and subsequently Isidora.

Now you might ask, how can we guard the Rostam road from bandits? Prong two, we fund guard-posts between the Rostami towns and make the stretches of uninhabited road safe for caravans. Now, this is where one of my incentives comes into play:
’

Zubaidha took a sharp intake of breath, mostly meant as a ploy to grab the Isidora merchants’ attention, but partially to steady herself for this gamble, ‘I don’t say this lightly, but you must never repeat this information. You might have heard ghost-stories of the Hashashin when you were children. I'm talking about those phantoms who supposedly protect Parthevia from their Amakh fortress. In recent times, it has seemed that they couldn’t be real. Well, what if I told you that they were not simply stories?’ She gestured towards Kut, who appeared suddenly from the shadows, startling everyone despite having been there from the very start, ‘This woman here is a representative of the Hashashin. I brokered a bargain with their leader, the Old Man of the Mountain, to have them patrol the Rostam road. To prove his sincerity, and bolster our trust, the Old Man gave me the names of some senior Hashashin. You may find that you recognise a few of them, including prominent merchants, soldiers and even nobles.

At this, she picked out a number of files with signed names, all being signatures from Hashashin mentors who had agreed to this plan. Waiting only until Ghanim and Artarushu had fully absorbed all this information, Zubaidah would then continue, ‘So as you can see, if we station both guards and Hashashin across the Rostam road, there will be almost no problems for merchant caravans at all. If we implement prong one and two, we will be able to both eliminate banditry and also convert the majority of bandits into the merchant guilds’ workforce, killing two birds with one stone. I believe that this is the only way to revitalise the Rostam road, and transform it back into a goldmine for your merchant guilds.

The two representatives watched Zubaidah with polar opposite expressions. Ghanim wore a disassociated, dismissive mask while Artarushu’s smile just continued to grow off his face. Despite her essay of a speech, the idea was simple. Build up other roads through underutilized cities, develop the areas to create proper structure, and defend these routes which would have a much lower difficulty of managing. Sure it probably would work. Ghanim had scribed several numbers on a scrap of paper but he was not sold yet.
“Do you have documentation supporting these ideas? Studies? Surveys? Names?”

An assistant stepped forward to the leader of the Ash Company to collect whatever the woman was willing to give. Should the woman hand over what Ghanim requested, he would begin reviewing the works with a much more amused expression. Should the woman decline to share, his mask would evolve into something more disapproving.

Artarushu would be amused either way but if a copy was made available to him, he would pass it back to one of his own assistants in the back. “This is all so fascinating. But, I’m afraid I don’t do charity work.”
“Of course Artarushu but it's easy to coup back such cost.”
“That’s only if you can find someone with the right mind.”
“Minds can be built with enough coin.”
“I still have some reservations.”
“There are two points here… Care to make a wager?”
“Let's wait till I hear this incentive.”

The reveal of the Hashashin changed everything. Ghanim’s slammed his hands on the table dropping his pen and riling up his entourage. He quickly raised his hand, signaling his people to stand down while sharing the grin of a young boy meeting his favorite arthur. Stars glittered from his face as he felt for his pen which would be shortly passed to him by an assistant. “I fear I have no better reason to refute this idea on the grounds of security. How much are you paying them? Are they for hire? I'm sure I can find room in my budget to keep one or two on my personal staff.”

Artarushu on the other hand dropped his smile. “I doubt it was money that won The Ash Company the support of a fairy tale.” The man stood up watching as his other stumbled back into his chair. Ghanim became flustered by Artarushu's truth but Artarushu didn’t smile. [Something Achaemenes could pick up on]

“This alone should guarantee your plan’s success… I’m glad I allowed this meeting to happen.” The man would then snap his fingers and a thick smoke would erupt from the darkness behind him. Ghanim’s people would be quickly swallowed and incapacitated them while the man was stuck rubbing his eyes. “Artarushu. Please… tell me this is one of your games.”

It all started so well, ‘I’m glad that we have you on our side, Ghanim. I’m afraid that the Hashashin are not for hire, at least not in exchange for mere coin. It seems that they operate based on some sense of Parthevian nationalism. If your business is in Parthevia’s best interest, the Hashashin will lend their aid.’ And then, Artarushu showed his hand:

With a snap of his fingers, he would spirit away Ghanim’s men and leave the four Parthevia merchants alone. Well, alone save the newly-introduced Hashashin, who would reach for her blade. ‘No need to be hasty, Kay. We are here for discussions, are we not?’ As her companion Kut lowered her hand, still keeping it firmly on the scabbard, Zubaidah would smile knowingly, ‘So you must be Gawhur’s informant, Artarushu? I knew that it must’ve been you or Ghanim, you see, because Achaemenes has only been in contact with you two. But I must admit that it surprises me that you were the traitor.’ At this point, her smile began to tighten into something ugly and thin-lipped, ‘After all, your family and the Mansur household have been allies for decades, have we not?

So why've you betrayed us now, huh?’ As she continued speaking, unbeknownst to Zubaidah herself, her seat shimmered with a purple haze into the form of a golden throne, ‘Oh, and don’t even try to escape, m’kay?’ It felt like the room itself was responding to fulfil her threat, the air flickering like static and almost choking Artarushu with some invisible pressure, ‘Tell me absolutely everything…

Or I’ll show you the Hashashin’s best-kept secret.
