Off the Meridian coast it was a sunny day with a calm sea. The Red Spine cut a wake through the waves with its sails fully open. The ship had a fair wind at her back and she was full speed ahead. The sound of the Red Spine's forward canon roared and black smoke spilled from its mouth. Ahead of the ship the cannon ball landed not far from something underwater ahead of the ship. The shockwave and splash from the shot caused the waves to stir and for a moment that underwater shadow was revealed to open air slightly for a moment. A large shell. But the creature dove back under the waves and continued towards a small chain of islands. The Red Spine gave chase firing off canon shot relentlessly during the pursuit.
The creature made it into the chain of islands and navigated the waters between them easily out maneuvering the larger ship with ease. The Red Spine turned about and circled the island with broadside canons opening fire in successive volleys. But the bombardment was just a distraction. Of the aft of the ship men were cracking open barrels full of an orange liquid and dumping them into the water. The ship dumped the barrels around the group of islands. Soon the orange contamination spread and fish turned up on the surface of the water dead.
The underwater creature thought himself safe in between the smaller channels that broke up the islands. But the humans on the ship were craftier than expected. By the time the Deepscale Tortoise noticed the toxic addition to the waters and moved to land to avoid them, the Red Spine had already started deploying smaller row boats and sending teams of men into the islands. A large turtle-like humanoid clambered onto the beach of the largest of all the islands dragging a large piece of driftwood that was fashioned into a club behind him.
Though the beastman had a savage appearance, he also wore a blue cloth and had a number of pouches and vials worn. It was clear that the tortoise was far from a mindless monster. "Heh, looks like this old self has made quite the enemy. These guys aren't your average pirates." Said the shelled reptile in a deep gravely voice that sounded somewhat worn with age. Rather than wait for his attackers to arrive on the beach, the tortoise hefted his log onto his shoulders and headed into the dense forest on the island disappearing into the trees. Though the island wasn't very large, the pirates would still need to conduct a tedious search to find their prey.
