...Tenma was actually amused with this second task he received from the Shikizui... well, why not? Back in the Kou's Civil War, he was tasked to focus on defending the fort and to actually trying to win the war. Now... this Shikizui's man wanted Tenma to assist in defending the Shikuzui fort because there was a smaller clan under this rival clan that were trying to attack the fort. Well, like grandfather like grandson it seemed... If the one eyed man remembered correctly, Yoshihiro Shikizui's daughter married Gao Yuan Zu and Yoshiro was born after that. It was still amusing to think that both of Tenma and Yoshiro's maternal grandfather was a member of Kina clan, although the swordsman wasn't sure about his maternal grandfather's whereabout now. He only heard from his mother that, Genjiro Morihana, moved to live in Kou and never really bothered to come back to Kina. For now he was just curious about what kind person his grandfather was, but he wouldnt be able to actually try and ask around, so he would just keep in with him for now.
As Tenma headed to the fort with Rui Li, he wondered if Noir would be interested to know that her magician blood was originally rooted from Kina Country. She might be very interested, she was a rather curious person after all and she would want to know everything. But if he told her that they were siblings... would she accept...? Hopefully she would, he was hoping for it. It would break his heart, shatter his world if she didn't... If only he could quickly find out who did that... years of searching for clues but nothing got him closer to who murdered his parents... The swordsman would let out a sigh, it was not the time to actually worry about that... He should focus on his task in Kina at the moment.
"Brother." Rui Li called Tenma, following the restriction to not call him General outside the Kou's imperial palace. "I am worried about the samurais here... Not like in a bad way, but they seemed... very stiff? as if they are very nervous." The girl would whisper to Tenma, trying to be as quiet as she could because she was afraid if someone could hear her and got upset. "Hmm?" Tenma looked at the girl before shifting her eyes to look around, he must be doing a really deep thinking for not focusing on his surroundng. "I think... I know why." He said to Rui Li, although he sounded a little bit hesitant about it. The swordsman recognized the expression that the samurais made, it was a mix of hopelessness... despair and void... He saw that kind of expression at the Civil War from before and it was caused by endless war, that seemingly won't be reaching any end soon.
Endless war would be always bringing a lot of despairs, it could easily make someone losing all their will to be alive. But how constant was it here... 6 rivaling clans, each of them had their own power and ambitions... if one clan stopped to attack, the other would still be coming to attack and it became a complete circle... there was no ending and they probably didn't know how to end this. They could only try to survive...
The leader of the samurai at the fortress would come to visit Tenma though, greeting the one eyed man and the silver haired girl before explaining what was needed to be done to protect the fort. "With all respect, Sir. May I ask for how long ever since you and your people start defending the fort?"
The man seemed taken aback by that question, but he didnt have any reason to not answer it. So with a tired sigh, the leader would explained, "We have been doing this for years... Defending our fortress every night and day because we don't know when the enemies will be coming to attack... But we are trying our best to do it because it is our duty." The man would pause for a second before looking at his subordinates, "I can only hope I am doing the best for them as well though... Being a samurai is tough... but it's a honorable profession." A warm smile would appear on the man's face though, as if he was trying to show his warmth towards Tenma and Rui Li, "But we are counting on your help, both of you."
