Adrastos Thanatos

Adrastos Thanatos roamed the moonlit streets of Reim. There wasn't much life other than the drunkards and typical night activity that went on in most cities in the world. In some areas, there was bright lights and in others there was utter darkness where houses slumbered along with their owners. However, unlike most of the people out tonight, the silver haired mage was awake to train some new spells he had been thinking about creating. After the monster goat job, Adrastos realized that he need to get stronger and that he couldn't waste time doing it either. He had goals to achieve and if he stayed at this level, he'd never reach them. He needed the power. He needed the money. He needed to rise to the top so that he would be able kill those who destroyed his life and make them suffer. In order for him to do that, he had to train and train hard with no rest unless it was absolutely necessary. Adrastos could not afford to mess around anymore. The time to act was now before it was too late.
Adrastos went to the outskirts of the city, away from people and their distractions. He stood in an empty area that overlooked the city he had just left from. Above him, the moon illuminated the ground and the stars glittered the sky in huge numbers. Adrastos inhaled deeply, allowing the scent of the air to fill his lungs with oxygen, and then exhaled slowly. His eyes closed as he tried to envision the spell he wanted to bring to life. He concentrated on his breathing and heart beat, making sure they were even. With his mind clear, he began to imagine how the first spell would look, how it would feel. The blue mage gripped his staff until his knuckles turned white and he loosened his grip. Arrows. Water then ice. The wind swirled his silver hair around wildly before suddenly dying down. Adrastos got into a position, one that he thought would benefit this certain type of spell. He imagined the movement of the spell, the distance it would go, the strength of the spell, how it would impact his opponent, and how fast it would be. All these details were important to the spell so that it would work, so it wouldn't blow up in the blue mage's face or fail countless times with no chance of success. Adrastos opened his eyes and pointed his staff at a rock that was twenty meters away. Taking one last breath, Adrastos thought of the spell that he wanted to perform and gently whispered the words. The rukh moved with his command, making arrows of water and sending them toward the rock. The speed didn't look fast enough, only going ten meters per second, and the water did not turn into ice like he wished. The water arrows splashed at the rock with not much impact. Adrastos exhaled heavily, getting into his stance and pointing at the rock again with his staff. This time, the speed was at fifteen meters per second and the impact was greater, but the arrows still did not turn to ice. "One more time," he muttered. As he pictured the spell in his mind, Adrastos applied the name that he wanted this spell to be called, "Glaciem Aqua Sagitta!" The arrows of water were sent straight at the rock with the correct speed, and strength. The signal that it had been perfected was when the arrows turned to ice and dealt the necessary damage to the rock that was needed.
Adrastos exhaled loudly, nodding to himself. He'd rest for half an hour  and then continue his training. He sat down, closed his eyes, and leaned against his staff.

After taking a thirty minute resting period, Adrastos decided it was time to work on the next spell he had in mind. This one, in his mind, felt like it would be a bit easier to master since it did not involve turning the water into ice. Still, it was complex since it consisted of ten swirling cyclones of high-pressured water. Unlike the previous spell he had done, this one did not have a calm feeling associated with it. This spell made the mage believe that rage was necessary to control the wild water cyclones. The rage was not as easy emotion to bring to light since Adrastos was one who kept his emotions to himself. Shaking his head, Adrastos closed his eyes and allowed his mind to go back in the past, back to when he was a child and when the slums he lived in was attacked.
Adrastos remembered how chilly the night was with the wind that traveled from the sea and bit at his bare skin. There was no moon that night, so darkness covered the sea and the slums like a thick blanket. Only the candles in the houses provided enough light to see in the streets and houses. Adrastos was up late, practicing with his father, building up his strength so that his body would be strong enough to use magic that would soon be taught to him, when the ships sneaked into the harbor. Everyone else was slumbering in their beds and hammocks, even his mother. It only took a matter of seconds until the night was illuminated by the hungry flames set by the pirates and thieves. The streets ran red with blood and the silence of night was shattered by the piercing shrieks of people everywhere. His father had run off to get his mother, but was stopped and killed by a giant man with an ax. Adrastos remembered feeling so terrified that he could move. He remembered trembling, wondering if he was going to die as well, alongside his father who only wanted to protect his family. Instead, Adrastos was taken by the man, now covered in the blood of his father, who wielded the ax on his back.
Adrastos zeroed in on the fear that had turned into rage and held it as if it were a lifeline that he could not afford to let go at all. Keeping his eyes shut tightly, his hand clenched his staff until his hand hurt, and imagined how this new spell would act just as he did that last one. He held on to the rage, not wanting to let it go just yet. Adrastos spun his staff and opened his eyes, his silver irises glowing white like the moon as he clenched his teeth and prepared to cast his second spell. As if he were about to unleash a battle cry, the blue mage opened his mouth and spoke the words to his new spell. "Aqua Cyclonas!" The rage he held and let build up was unleashed into the new spell. The rukh moved at his command, producing high-pressured water cyclones that moved almost randomly until they all advanced toward the rock and hit it from all angles.
Adrastos' breathing was a bit heavy, not because of exhausting himself, but because the rage he felt still lingered. Before attempting his next spell, Adrastos decided to calm down so that he would be able to focus on the task at hand.

It took longer than Adrastos had anticipated to calm down after his last spell. An whole hour probably passed as the mage paced back and forth, but another hour probably went by when he tried to meditate and calm himself. He never liked emotions since they allowed others to get closer to him and left him more vulnerable. Certain negative emotions he enjoyed, especially those that belonged to other people and he was the cause, but he was not fond of being unable to control his own sometimes. It was nerve racking and very annoying. The only way he truly released most of his anger was when he unleashed his last spell at least two more times.
For this spell, he decided to feel nothing and allow his body to go numb. After calming most of his seemingly endless rage, Adrastos hoped it would be easy to accomplish. He tried to picture what it would feel like to have his body covered in ice. Better yet, he tried to imagine what it would be like if her were in Imuchakk, where the snow would fall from the sky with no end in sight, wearing nothing but a vest and a pair of pants. He imagined that there was a blizzard and that the wind sawed away his nerved and ripped his skin raw. His body shivered just by imagining the cold. He felt like he had frostbite, like every inch of his skin was turning darker and darker until it matched the black on his cloth, like his limbs and skin would fall off from the lack of blood circulation, and none of it felt like a pleasant sensation to have at all.
Adrastos opened his eyes, seeing that he was okay, that there was no cold like the one he was imagining, that he was safe in Reim where he would not be buried in snow, but he held onto the feeling that he had felt. He didn't want to inflict damage to himself, so he had to try and imagine himself pushing it away from him, like his borg was protecting him from the severe cold. Adrastos knew that if he messed this up, he would injure himself. How stupid would it be for him to get hurt by his own spell? "Pretty stupid," he responded out loud in a whisper. He looked around him and focused on the water molecules in the air. He attempted to remember how it felt to imagine the cold from earlier and minimize it to a scale that he would be able to control. He kept his breathing and heart rate even, but kept his emotion away, not wanting them to interfere and ruin his spell. Adrastos held his staff with both hands in a horizontal position and focused on the image in his head. Swallowing hard, Adrastos uttered the words to his spell. "Adrustum Aura." Instantly, he felt the cold surround his body as the rukh froze the water molecules in the air. He concentrated on moving the cold away from him at least ten metes in all directions. He could barely feel his body when the cold was pushed away from him. Seeing that his spell was complete by looking at the frost that lingered on the ground, he loosened his form and sighed heavily. "Now would be a good time to rest," he said, feeling proud at his accomplishments for the night as he headed back to the inn.
