Job:

The moon hung high in the sky, its crescent shape granting an eerie silver light to the ground below. Along the dry dusty floor one could see the forms of several different wagons and horses trampling along the grass. There was a caravan travelling in the dead of night. The sound of their movement was quiet yet loud at the same time. The group was clearly trying to keep itself from going noticed. They were moving swiftly and didn’t seem to speak at all with the exception of the occasional call to move the group left or right. However, the long caravan was still filling the area around them with the sound of creaking wheels and stomping horses.

There were ten carriages in the caravan. All of them were covered in white cloth, hiding what lay within. Well-dressed men on horses could be seen patrolling the caravan as they went. One could make out glistening chains on their hips, lit up by the moonlight. Furthermore, riding on the edges of the carriages, there were several people in tattered clothing peeking out from under the white sheets. More chains would glisten in the light, but these weren’t on their hips. These were the chains of slavery that hung around their necks and wrists.

Near the back of the caravan, a young girl sat on a seat, next to the man driving the carriage. A wooden staff lay across her lap as she sat; her dirty blonde hair whipping across her face as they moved. She seemed very young, but the way she gripped that stave hinted that she may know magic. Silently, she sat, looking ahead as the caravan left the city. They were about thirty minutes away from it now. In another hour or two they would be out of the country.

All around her, the sounds of soft moans could be heard coming from the carriage behind her. Within the veiled wagon, there were about a dozen slaves. All of them were drugged. Each carriage held either slaves or merchants, with the majority holding the first. Most of them had been drugged to make transporting them easier. Because of the new laws against slavery, most of the slaves spent the majority of their days drugged until they were transported out of the country. The new laws bred disobedience and hope that if they escaped they would be free. The merchants did not want that.

So, Liri sat, shifting as she brought her legs up against her chest and hugged them. The air was much too fresh for her thin shorts. Her purple eyes dropped to the dust that rose up, biting down on her lower lip. Slowly, the girl turned to peek over the edge of her seat, peering at the abyss behind them. Earlier, she had been able to make out the fading city lights, but now, all that the girl could see was darkness… wait. No, there were shapes back there. Where they being followed? Every pore in her trained body screamed to report it, but, for some reason, the girl simply turned and sat silently, not speaking a word about the approaching strangers.

So, something had been in the darkness following them. Liri sat silently in the front of the carriage; both hands clutched her stave tightly as the commotion up ahead rang out. The girl could see the smoke bombs and chaos ahead of her. What was going on? Her purple eyes shifted, staring out towards the  rising clouds of smoke. The sound of clashing metal filled the air, turning the heavy silence that had been suffocating them mere moments ago into nothing but a faint memory. The girl stood, letting out a soft breath as she felt he carriage’s bars ripped open. The carriage driver stood, ready to fight off the man freeing the goods in the back, but, clearly, he didn’t survive too long.

When the man with the strange symbols appeared before her, asking Liri if she wanted to break the chains, the girl didn’t know how to respond. The man had just killed someone who could be considered an ally, kind of. Didn’t that mean they were on different teams. Her face turned red as the girl became flustered. She opened her mouth to reply, but then, the sound of a man shouting orders in the distance could be heard. Almost immediately, her mouth shut. She mumbled something softly under her breath as her eyes darted down to the ground, as if she was replying with a soft muttering.

However, instead of replying to him, she was casting a spell. Suddenly, five half meter wide balls of Magoi would shoot out at the man at 10m/s, which was more than enough for he was but a few mere feet away. The girl had cast some sort of Growth spell at him. She was aiming for his neck and face, trying to have the magoi balls plot themselves on his eyes and neck. She aimed three for his eyes and two for his neck. Should they hit, he would find growths appearing on his eyelids, making it impossible for him to open them. If they hit his neck, he’d find himself having difficulty breathing from the growths that would crush his esophagus.
