A crisp chill swept through the room as Asha clutched the sheets and threw them over her head, burrowing herself in the soft warmth of her bed. Today was the day; the day when all of her studies, her diligence…that incessant drive to improve her skills would culminate in one single tournament—the 2nd Kodor. It was with great trepidation that she began her routine for the day. It was standard fare—wash the body, wash the hair, practice good hygiene—the list goes on. It was getting closer to the witching hour and with one deep breath and introspective moment looking out of the window, she grabbed her staff, scarf, and her study materials and whisked away down the steps of Magnostadt, her scarf lazily whipping in the wind behind her.

She faced the door leading to where the students were up for their 2nd Kodor were waiting. The usual festivities occurred in the audience, it was a whole spectacular event focused primarily on the vicious and potentially life-threatening display of intelligence, skill, and magical prowess. She pressed open the door, the metal cold against her gloved hands. The sounds of conversation permeated the air, and all Asha could hear is the immense noise that enveloped the room. She walked past her would-be opponents, all familiar and forged in the strenuous fires of Magnostadt curriculum.

You seem nervous,” said a voice from behind Asha. She turned around to face the voice, nervously clutching her belongings, “And jumpy!” The voice came from the face of a beautiful young man, with shimmering gold hair and a handsome, firm appearance. Asha’s mouth gaped open, unable to speak or respond. She let out a quiet, interesting murmur that piqued the man’s interest more. He merely laughed and walked away, shaking his head in what Asha assumed was disbelief at someone could lack remedial social skills. Asha merely sighed and trudged along through the waiting room, finding an open area to plop down, and rested her legs after a stressful adventure. She sat down on the ground, her staff resting behind her, as she popped open a book and began reading whatever more she could learn about magic to help her out in this exam. The announcer’s resounding voice boomed throughout the examination grounds. Asha trembled with anxiety, nervous for the battles ahead. She locked eyes with another girl in the room, this girl just as nervous looking as her. Finally, the announcer called for the first match of the day—Asha had no idea what her classmates’ names were, but she recognized the handsome man and the girl she locked eyes with walk out into the arena. Feeling curious about these opponents, she went out to watch them fight.

STUDENTS OF MAGNOSTADT! ESTEEMED MEMBERS OF ACADEMIA! WELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL SECOND KODOR EXAMINATION! EACH YEAR WE TAKE FIVE EXTRAORDINARY STUDENTS AND ADVANCE THEM INTO THE SECOND KODOR WHERE THEY CAN FURTHER THEIR STUDIES HERE IN MAGONSTADT. BEGINNING THE TOURNAMENT ARE THE EXHIBITION MATCHES! …BEGIN!” The announcer boomed, his voice amplified by his extraordinary skill with sound magic. Out stepped four students into the arena. Asha was confused, as she was under the impression these matches were one-on-one, but nonetheless it was too late to bow out anyways. The magicians sprung into action, a flurry of fire, and ice, and electrical discharges flying about in majestic splendor. The handsome man fared quite well, yet his elemental specialty remained unknown to Asha for she couldn’t quite pinpoint which magic was his. She found herself studying the strategies and skillful ways in which these students used their magic. It was a shame two of them would be eliminated in this round; especially considering all four of them could easily advance into the 2nd Kodor. It finally occurred to Asha just how competitive this tournament was. In what seemed like fleeting moments, the match ended, with the handsome man and the shy girl as the ones to go on to the “real” part of the tournament.

Well…that…that was stressful,” She muttered to herself as she walked back to the waiting room, passing by the two winners of the match. The handsome man made eye contact with Asha, and in stupid fashion, blushed at the sight of his eyes meeting hers. “Damn it! Get your head in the game Asha!” She thought, or so she thought, as the handsome man only laughed at her once again and moved back to his spot in the waiting. The exhibition rounds all finished up nicely, and confused as to why she wasn’t allowed to participate in the exhibition round, watched all the students remaining around her leave and rest up for the matches tomorrow.

Uh, um, hi, excuse me!” She said, chasing after the announcer leaving the arena, “Um, hi! Yes, hi, hello I am Asha, Asha Samara, I was supposed to be competing in this whole…2nd Kodor thing and I wasn’t called to participate am I, am I like disqualified or am I not allowed…” The announcer merely looked her up and down, sighed, and looked through the list of students.

You know…” He mused, dramatically flipping the pages of the manifest, “Most students would consider this “someone throwing them a bone.” In any case, you were given a bye, congratulations, you’re an excellent student, so you were a bye this round.” The announcer fled the scene, very matter of factly, and wandered off to wherever he seemed to be residing at Magnostadt. Before Asha could ask what a ‘bye’ was exactly, she took it to mean she somehow tested out of proving herself, before proving herself several more times in order to make it into one of the nice and fabled “final five.” Feeling as though she was wildly unsuccessful in her efforts to feel even remotely confident in her abilities in order to nab the coveted spot to move up to the 2nd Kodor, she walked back to her room, burying her face into her books as she tried to learn more about magic in order to excel at using it.

GREETINGS STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF MAGNOSTADT ACADEMY!” The announcer boomed, filing the air with deafening sound that made Asha wince in pain. She sprawled out in her little “waiting area” she made for herself, and starting running through spells in her head, some she’s mastered, some she’s concocting in her brain, training her mind all she could. The handsome man walked past, doubled back, and stood over the studious Asha.

Care to explain why you’ve decided that now is the most opportune time to bury your face in a book? You have a, ah, thing today,” He asked, flashing a winning and charming smile. Asha giggled at the man, it didn’t matter what he said, she felt it was just the perfect response to words coming out of his mouth. Reeling it in, Asha merely stood up, book in hand, and tried to make conversation with the debonair gentleman.

Uh, I-I just really need to qualify for the 2nd Kodor, y’know? Usually I get nervous and screw up…” She explained. Her rambling continued further, and sometime in between explaining how the fundamentals of magic is quite the page-turner and why life magic is a valuable and underrated, the announcer called the remaining participants into the arena grounds to commence the official start of the day’s events. Asha walked somberly, staff in hand, to the center, where everyone could see her. Her armpits started to sweat a little, and she kept doing this weird hiccup-burp thing that made her look like she was having trouble swallowing a really wet noodle. In any case, she made it out semi unnoticed and took her spot in the line of contestants appearing.

Good luck, Asha,” The man told her as they stood in line together, “I am sure you will do well.” These little words of encouragement did absolutely nothing for Asha, as now that she felt this man’s interest in her was riding on going right out into that tournament and kicking some magical ass. She was now pumped up and ready to pile-drive the closest person with one of her spells.

WE HAVE THE FIRST MATCH OF THE DAY TO SEE WHO NABS THEIR SPOT IN THE COVETED “FINAL FIVE! UP FIRST, IN THE..THAT CORNER WE HAVE THE SOFTSPOKEN, THE SLIGHTLY GREASY, PAOLO! AND IN THE…THAT CORNER WE HAVE THE GIRL AFFECTIONATELY NAMED “GIRL WHO IS OBSESSED WITH PANTIES”, ASHA! GET READY FOLKS, GET READY CONTESTANTS, AND WHIP ‘EM OUT!” A little taken aback by the announcer’s odd phrasing, Asha found herself immediately in the throes of battle. Pallo, or whatever he’s called, rushed at Asha, flinging very large fireballs her way.

Uh, ok, uh fire, probably really bad for plants…uh” Asha thought, her thoughts whirling around in her head, before she noticed the fireballs and enemy gaining toward her, “Ah screw it!” Asha, as fast as she could, strafed to her right, and thrust her staff up from the ground and up toward the opponent magician—“ALSIF KRMAH!” The vine emerged from the ground, and shot straight out as if it were a javelin aimed at the Paolo’s heart. The vine merely bounced off his Borg, and Asha positioned herself at a safe distance from the man and his great balls of fire. Seeing this as her chance to swing the tide of battle into her favor, Asha held her staff low to the ground, chanting several commands to the rukh. Waiting to see the enemy’s movements, she stayed her spell, waiting for the enemy to make his next move. Her opponent wasted no time in charging toward her, summoning tiny wisps of fire around him as he made his way toward Asha. Before the enemy magician could twirl around in a fiery frenzy, Asha called out her spell to entrap the magician. Her spell, Rkud Aldm, snatched the enemy’s left leg and staff arm, pulling the poor lad to the ground and sending his spell to misfire and miss Asha. With one fell swoop, Asha launched her finishing move, and unleashed her Zahhak to coil around the frightened enemy, crush his borg, and coil around his body,

AND…THE...WINNER…IS MISS SAMARA! DID NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING!” Asha was a little insulted, but still quite overjoyed that she won this round! She would still have one more match later, and if she won that, she’d be place into the 2nd Kodor regardless of winning or losing the third match. She waltzed into the waiting area, brimming with confidence and just a smidgeon of arrogance to see only two other students in the waiting room.

What…where is everyone else?” Asha asked. It appeared the only two students left were the handsome man and shy girl.

Well, I guess two people in here were expelled for academic dishonesty…which is a super lame reason to get kicked out of a school for people gifted with MAGIC but to each their own, eh?” He answered, admiring his staff, “I suppose that since we are the only three left, we’re all advancing no matter what and the entire tournament portion of the exam is just, I don’t know, canceled I guess.

This is ridiculous! Did you see, like did you see, with your eyeballs, how awesome I was? I can confidently say I am the smartest person I know like I would wipe the FLOOR with you both and then rinse you out in a river and wipe the floor with you both again!” Asha rambled, leaving he shy girl to recoil in confusion and the handsome man to only roll his eyes at Asha’s arrogant musing and return to admiring the delicate woodwork put into his staff. Just then, the dean of students responsible for all those in the 2nd Kodor walked in to congratulate the three victors on their magical prowess.

I must…I really must say it was a good showing from all of you! I cannot wait until you three test into the 1st Kodor—to see such young talent! And three students with unbridled potential! I can feel my body responding to the soothing vibrations of your untapped skill! It makes me shiver with anticipation!” The three students gazed at the professor in horror as she verbally pleasured herself while addressing the students. “A…a-hem, well, in any case, you three, yes, brilliant minds. You seem to have taken your studies here at Magnostadt seriously—you’ve all improved immensely.

Asha awoke the next morning, slightly sore from the tournament the day prior, to the sun shining only on her eyes and leaving her head feeling like it was being burned by thousands of tiny magnifying glasses. She tied up her hair in a ponytail and grabbed a book and sat down at her desk.

“Still more to learn…” She said, diligently writing down notes.
