I propose that for Christmas 2014, the forum hosts a Holiday Lottery!

Items that could be won:

  • Past Dungeon Beast Transformations
  • Items from the Marketplace (Pages, Magical Tools, Pets)
  • Huang 2x Boost (Duration: Week)
  • XP 2x Boost (Duration: Week)
  • The Prinny Overlord's Dagger

I was thinking ticket prices probably around 25-50k. What do you guys think about the idea?

I'm thinking week long boosts are a bit overboard lol

Aside from that, this is a good idea, but I feel like I should mention that technically the forum already had a lottery system in place. It just never got updated after balbadd(the board its located in) was archived.

Yeah, the XP probably is a bit much, I was just jotting down a list of potentials. I already knew about the Balbadd lottery and figured a similar system would be used.

While the idea is nice, and I like it, Ari has already brought up concerns about allowing people to gamble, and how she doesn't want those legal repercussions for the site. The Coliseum is very close to it, but we don't have a better fleshed out system for player interactions for gambling because of these very concerns.

The lottery is a form of gambling. As such, I would believe we should take the same approach towards it. Perhaps instead have them as Limited Time Offer items, with prices varying based on the strength of the item itself.

There are no legal repercussions for "gambling" fake money. If there were, online poker games would be illegal. Since there is no real money involved on this site, and nothing exchanged on it can be redeemed for real money, there are no legal issues to worry about.

There are rules and regulations that restrict online gambling games, and some states even completely outlaw them. I just finished reading up on the legalities of gambling, including lotteries.

What the States say:

I also checked Forumotion's rules and regulations/terms of service:

Forumotion's Terms of Service:

Now I'm no lawyer, so I don't pretend to know every state law and regulation, but I do understand what these rules and regulations are inferring. Before going further, I want to lay out the facts on our systems right now:

1) Our Huang is an item that is awarded to a player based on personal effort, and it's only value is the reflection of 'personal effort'.
2) Our Huang is an item that is given to players free of charge.

This means that, in most places, this type of lottery would not be considered 'illegal gambling', as Congress has decreed it so. However, individual state laws are able to enforce stricter laws than Federal if they would like, effectively prohibiting such gambling.

With that out of the way, lets move on to Forumotion's Terms of Service. I put it in bold above, and I will briefly explain why I have put it in bold. The first item is put in bold because it is a broad overarching subject that is open to interpretation, and I want to make sure that everyone is aware that gambling MIGHT be considered 'inappropriate activities on the server'. Furthermore, in some places gambling is considered 'ethically reprehensible', which is why I put the second section in bold as well.

I will not stop such an event from taking place, but if the event is posted it is done so with knowledge of these possibilities.

Edit: Mind you, a lot of what our characters do on the site might be considered ethically reprehensible LOL, so I don't think they would be that hard-up on it.

It's possible but highly highly HIGHLY improbable that forumotion would crack down on us for holding a lottery. Lotteries have been on multiple forums for years and I've never seen a single one get slapped with a violation of anything. Lets drop the overcautiousness about whether or not this would be "allowed" by the powers that be. Elementary schools hold lotteries like this. There is no reason why we couldn't.

Instead, lets move this thread to a much more important focus such as what would be reasonable prizes and whether or not we are actually going to DO this event.

Some other possible rewards could be a sum of huang or a sum of exp.

I'd also recommend a sum of 15k huang to be the price of a ticket. This is a reasonable sum that even a D-tier character could amass within a short amount of time allowing all to participate with relative ease.

I like the idea of cheaper tickets, but I was worried that the ratio of winning a prize vs cost would come into play the cheaper the ticket was. For example, a 25k ticket with a guaranteed random prize, vs a 1k ticket with a 1/4 chance of a prize. I am fine with whatever price is set forward though.

As for the betting, Forumotion's stance is: help.forumotion.com/t123605-is-in-game-gambling-lotteries-allowed

I was assuming the lottery would run like what we already have in the balbadd casino(which was why I brought it up) where the dice roll system would be used.

The first dice roll done would set which numbers are "winning" for each of the prizes involved.

Then people who purchase lottery tickets would roll the lottery dice and those who get a winning number get a prize.

Although, the number range for the current lottery system is pretty wide. Perhaps it should be edited down to under 100.

I've rolled the dice 5 times with this post so those who've never seen it in action can see what a lottery dice roll looks like.

The number range is quite high, though until a list is created with each item attached to a number we won't know what it should be. Also, I do want to point out that a system like Garret suggested where items are just sold on a LTO at a discount would also be cool. I could support that.

This is what I would price things at, and I will create a ratio of how likely it should be to win it as well due to price.

Tier 1:
Tertiary Specialization (300k) (Unique)

Tier 2:
The Prinny Overlord's Dagger (150k) (Unique)
Potion of Rejuvenation (75k)
Magical Charm (50k)
DB Xforms (50k)

Prinny Overlord's Dagger:

Tier 3:
Huang 2x Boost (Duration: 5 jobs) (30k)
XP 2x Boost (Duration: 5 jobs) (30k)
Potion of Good Health (20k)
Ability Voucher (1 B-Tier, OR 2 C-Tier OR 4 D-Tier OR any combination that equals 1 B-Tier.) (15k)

3 different tickets: Tier 3 tickets, which will run at 3k a piece. Tier 2 tickets which will run at 15k a piece. Tier 3 tickets which will run at 30k a piece.

Bring the rolling down to double digits. If it's possible, a number of 1-10 for the rolls. Any doubling up on the same item results in a refund for that ticket. Limit 1 of each item per applicant.

Unique items are 1 in stock only. First come first serve.

I don't like the idea of ticket tiers or of having tertiary spec being among the available prizes. I also don't like that any of the prizes are "unique" where only one person can win them.

Personally I just would like to have a single group lottery of items and allow for multiple ticket purchases. If a player gets multiple "wins" from their rolls then they can pick one of the prizes they would like of the winning rolls and the other winning rolls get refunded.

This would be much simpler and allow for an even playing field for all those involved. No potential superior prizes for those with more money and no mix of tiers with varying ticket prizes.

That's just my opinion though. Prizes that were suggested by Garret which I approve of and support are:

Potions
Magical Charms
Ability Vouchers up to B-tier

I guess I should also mention that I don't like that the double bonuses last for 5 jobs. MAYBE 3 would be cool but I'd rather it just be one or two jobs.

Them's be my thoughts. Here are some more prize options I'd like to see. If we do go with a straight lottery then the more potential prizes there are, the more likely it will be that we see people get winning rolls so I'm all for a ton of prizes!:

A Pet
Voucher to redeem one Mount in the Beast Emporium
Extra Ability Slots
Blessings of the Rukh
Any of the items that have been sitting in the shop for more than a month except for the ruler gems
Various lump sums of huang(25k, 50k, 75k, 100k)
Various lump sums of exp(50, 100, 200, 500)

Im suggesting Other:

I think the sale with limited items like forms would be nice but its kind of like buying them though which is sad :(.

I think the lotto would be fun for us to do.

If we also ran a small sale which would mean things like forms maybe these would require someone to of course do rp of how they gained there dungeon beast form etc as well as currency,
