What... what the hell was...

Jian prided himself on the ability to keep up with events as they happened. He was a very sharp man, and his years of dealing with clients had given him a basic understanding of the human psyche. These two facts combined to allow him to stay above other people in almost everything, taking control of even the most desperate situations. It was a huge part of his fighting style. That being said, he was confused as to how this had happened.

---

Jian didn't even have to struggle to keep up with the swinging of the boat upon the water. Instead, he flowed as the water did, constantly swaying and adjusting his position as he made his way across the deck, moving towards his target; one of the lackeys.

He couldn't afford to throw his weapon this time (if it went overboard, it was gone forever) so instead he went in with his physical strength, spinning and slicing the man across the throat with his left fan, a foot planted on his chest kicking him overboard with a gargling scream.

---

He had been hired to look after a ship from some old man who wanted him to help them get their cargo to another part of the Empire. Or, what was left of the empire at any rate. Though, perhaps he said "wanted them" as he had been assigned to work with someone he'd never met before - a man with unarguably Heliohaptian descent.

Now, he had met plenty of people from Heliohapt in his day, and he knew that their culture was a very fascinating one, but said culture often made them difficult to get along with. they were a proud nation, and often that pride made them irritating as all hell. However, this kid was irritating for a whole different reason. He was... nice.

Now, don't get me wrong - Jian had no problem with nice people. His line of work was often difficult socially, but it was always good to meet new people. Unfortunately, there was such a thing as too nice. It felt like this guy was trying to ingratiate himself, he was cheeky and playful and Jian had to put up with a lot over the trip from him and the man that his "companion" had affectionately called "harpbutt"

---

Flicking his fan to get rid of the obtue amount of blood that had gushed out of his throat, he smiled towards his fighting partner who was obviously having just about the same amount of luck. "Worry less about me, Jahan, and more about yourself. I'd hate for you to ruin that pretty outfit of yours with blood."

---

Somehow, after almost a day worth of travelling with his companions they'd wound up in some sort of cave through a mountain. It was essentially a canal, constructed to cut off ten days of having to sail around the mountain. It was clearly the work of a very skilled magician, and he would have spent time admiring it but, before he knew it, they were under attack.

and he still barely knew what was going on.

So far the battle was going well. Despite the fact that the sea was the domain of their opponents, it didn't seem to be giving them much of an advantage. Sure, it made it very difficult for Jian to fight at full strength, but even at half strength they weren't exactly very hard to beat. He'd often heard that pirates were ex-navy who had gone rogue, but he couldn't help but wonder if these men had been dishonourably discharged for simply not being good at their jobs.

The exception to that rule, and there is an exception to every rule before someone complains, is the fact that the captain was actually holding his own. The old idiot was actually firing fireballs at a wooden ship that he had thrown himself onto. Their own vessel had long since been passed, and now the captain was trapped on here just as much as anyone else was. He was either an idiot or suicidal... or both.

Finally deciding that enough was enough, Jian decided to assist his compatriot with the captain. There was one lackey left who might actually pose a threat, but he had obviously realized his own captain's stupidity as well as he was off his guard. Were Jian to press the situation, he could be defeated with ease, but he had more important things to do right now.

"Keep him busy, Jahan. If he keeps using those fireballs we're gonna go down in flames, and I don't think any of us could survive swimming to shore." Moving to the side, Jian decided that he had to do something to supplement Jahan's own action, and that surviving was worth risking losing his blade.

Shoving his hand into his tunic's inner pocket, he pulled out his well-used red crystal vial, before dosing the end of his red fan with the liquid inside. He had to use more than usual, since he wasn't sure which side would cut through the man, but it would be worth it.

With a moment of aiming, Jian loosed the fan, letting it curve through the air like a boomerang. Jahan's distraction of the man allowed him to not be thinking about where his legs were moving and, with a cry, quickly found out why that was a bad idea as the blade sliced through his flesh just above his knee; a glancing wound but no less a wound.

As he stumbled backwards, he'd find the blood oozing its way through his system, dulling his reaction speeds. Furthermore, with his head beginning to simulate a strong feeling of dizziness, compiling onto the rocking of the boat to generate a strong feeling of Kinetosis. To the uninitiated, the captain's sea legs weren't working no more.

Lucky for Jian, his aiming had paid off - the fan continued flying through the air before finally cutting into the ship's guardrail, digging hard into the wood and keeping a tight position there. It'd be hard to pull out, but it wasn't lost at least.

As the fight on the upper deck continued, Jahan called out that Jian should focus on his own fight. This was his fight, he would argue, except for the fact that it simply didn't seem necessary. It seemed like the boy had everything in his hands, and for some reason Jian got the feeling he could trust him with this. So, with that, he turned his head towards the pirate, smiling wickedly at the man as he realized exactly what was about to happen.

Pulling out his sword, it appeared that he decided that if he was going down, he was going to go down swinging. A very admiral decision for someone like this, but it certainly wasn't a smart one. He'd have had a better chance surviving if he'd thrown himself overboard. Jian would have to make this quick and painless in respect of the man's abundant courage (or, perhaps, sparse braincells)

The man struck first, and whilst Jian could normally dodge an attack like that with ease normally, the ship took this moment to lurch, catching jian off guard and letting the man deliver a blow to his shoulder. Tssh, Jian exhaled through gritted teeth in an attempt to avoid screaming. That blow actually really fucking hurt. Fuck respect, this was going to be painful for him.

Thankfully to Jian, it was at this moment that the ship got out of the strongest part of the waves inside the passage, allowing him a smoother bit of movement. Now there was no lurching of the boat, Jian moved with the perfect fluidity of a dancer around the man's blows. It was obvious that he was barely having to try to avoid this guy, and that fact alone seemed to infuriate his opponent, causing him to become sloppier as the blows went one.

Swipe, step, thrust, side-step, swing, duck - Every single attempt seemed more desperate and badly performed than the last, slowly degrading until finally Jian managed to get behind him, delivering a punch with the bare palm of his hand, slamming into the man's pressure point.

As the man's body began to lock up on him, there was an obvious moment of panic as he tried to move his resistant body one last time, almost begging his body to allow him to escape.
"Sorry, boy, but you really should've just dived overboard." With that, Jian launched an upper-cut of a kick to his victim's chin, strong enough to launch him into the air.

The "ball" shot through the air for a second, before a second blow sent him flying off the ship, crashing into the water below. He wouldn't be able to swim with that little paralysis trick of his, and if you couldn't swim... well, this wasn't the kind of place you wanted to be.

Jian tried never to be cruel. He honestly did, but those who picked a fight had to be eradicated.
