Lexi shifted Nymeria on her back, making sure her quiver was not going to be hindered by the infant or put her daughter in any danger. She would need to move fast if she hoped to free these people and find out where they were being taken. The sound of steps on stone alerted her to movement coming into the cave and she was immediately in attack mode, drawing her bow free and notching an arrow on the string. Her arm was tense as she waited to see who the intruder was, the string pulled taut. Her face had fallen into a mask of neutrality, her complete focus on the approaching steps.

Around a crag of rocks, the guard came into view. She did not wait for him to take notice of her and risk sounding an alarm to the trader, she simply released the string she had drawn, the arrow flying forward and striking between the eyes of the guard. The man fell to the ground in a heap, a clatter echoing from his armor and blade hitting the stone ground. Lexi remained vigilant, her ears straining to try and detect any other sounds of movement that might indicate the trader might be approaching. When she heard nothing, she relaxed a bit but her body was still prepared for anything. She knew she would not be able to release the slaves until she had taken care of the trader, so she carefully made her way back to the mouth of the cave. The night was still pitched in darkness and she could hear the man snoring near the fire.

With steps as silent as any predator, Lexi edged closer until she was within two meters of the man. She pulled her dagger free, preparing to leap on him and demand answers, when Nymeria gave a soft gurgle in her sleep. It was all the warning the trader needed and his eyes shot open. At spotting her, he used Quickness to roll 10 meters away, drawing a dagger of his own. Lexi did not have time to be frustrated with her daughter’s ill-timed noise and sheathed her blade quickly to draw her bow. She took only a moment to formulate a plan, knowing she needed him alive until she could get more information from him. She grabbed 4 special arrows before launching Quad Boom towards the trader, the four arrows each striking a point 1.5 meters from him and exploding. The explosion would not harm him, but it would keep him where she wanted him, at the very least. She notched another arrow, arching a brow at him.

“Where are you taking them?”

“Like I would tell you. You belong in a cage with them!”

Lexiara snarled, her eyes flashing dangerously. No one threatened her with slavery. She notched another arrow, Boom flying towards him and landing right in front of him and exploding, the fire eating away his clothes and singeing his flesh. He gave a cry, but his Armor kept the flames from taking him down completely.

“Where are you taking them, slaver?”

Trader Bob gave a hiss of pain before lunging forward, trying to hit her with Slave Strike. Lexi saw his intention to move and by the time her arrived at her position, she had used Dash to slip to the side and draw Onyxia again, slashing at his leg and forcing him to fall to the ground. He gave a loud grunt as he landed on the ground, dropping his dagger to grab the wound with both hands to try and stop the bleeding. Lexi took the opening he had provided, kicking his dagger to the side and launching herself on him, pinning him down with a snarl. Her face was contorted with her anger, looking more like the jaguar she resembled with each passing second.

Bob had a look of panic on his face, realizing he was in a very bad position. He struggled, but the pain from the burns and the slash to his leg had weakened him, leaving him vulnerable to the vicious woman’s attacks. Lexiara put her dagger at his throat, growling out her words.

“I ask again, where are you taking them?”

The trader realized he had lost this fight and mumbled out something about an auction in hopes she would spare his life.

“Where?”

“South, halfway to Balbadd.”

“When?”

“Two-… two weeks.”

Lexi had the information she needed but the rage still boiled inside. Nymeria had been woken by the rapid movements of her mother, but she remained silent, instinctively seeming to know that now was not the time to gurgle about her rumbling belly. Images of Onyx falling to an attack flickered through Lexi’s mind and, before she could even think about her actions, her dagger was slicing across the trader’s throat. He gave a gurgle and a gasp as blood poured from the wound but Lexi did not leave him to suffer a slow death, her blade slicing again and again until the man’s head was severed.

Lexi panted and heaved as she looked down at the stump where a head had been a few moments before, some part of her mind registering that her hands were covered in blood. Reality came crashing back in when Nymeria gave a curious coo in her ear and Lexi pushed to her feet with great speed, moving away from the dead body. She searched through the bag beside the trader’s sleeping pad and pulled out a skin of water and immediately rinsed the blood from her hands before moving over to coldly search Bob’s body. In one of his pockets, she found a ring of keys and she snagged them. In moments, she was moving into the cave, taking the winding path to where the slaves were kept.

When she walked into the room, she could see everyone tense, eyeing her warily. She tried to pull a comforting smile to her face before jingling the keys at them and then moving to open the cages, one by one. Her voice was soft as she spoke after opening all of the cages.

“You are all free to return to your homes. If there is no home left for you to return to, there is a settlement you may seek refuge in. Follow the creek back until you find an ancient tree, from there, go in the direction the sun rises from. After about a day, you will come on the edge of the settlement. There will be scouts who will come to meet you. Tell them Lexi sent you, they will take you in and provide shelter.”

The adults came up to her, each offering her soft words of thanks. It was the children that took notice of the sling across her back and the bright red hair peeking out and giggling at them. She shot the kids a small smile as their parents gathered them and began moving out of the cave, leaving Lexi alone in the desolate surroundings. This would be as good a place as any to rest for the night, but first she went out to gather the belongings of the trader, searching until she found a sheaf of parchment. The slaves were pilfering the other valuables the man had, and she made no protest. What she needed was information, these freed people needed the supplies and goods the man carried far more than she did. Once she had gathered everything that looked important, she made her way back into the cave, following the light coming from where the people had been kept, a small fire there illuminating the dim, damp walls.

It was not the most comfortable of surroundings, and it certainly was not the hut she shared with Shana, but it would provide protection for the night. She would investigate the papers tomorrow and make her way to the auction. Her task would not be finished until she had taken out every slave trader she could find.
