When they arrived back at the small village with the slaves, the Elder’s eyes widened slightly before nodding to two more of the tribe members. The villagers rushed forward to begin helping the rescued slaves, one trying to check on Lexi before backing up at the small growl Onyx let loose. He would care for his sister himself.

Lexi shifted in Onyx’ grasp, signaling that she wanted to be on her feet. He obliged, tilting her body so she could gain steady footing. Once he was certain she would not tumble over in her tired state, he loosened his hold on her so she could approach the Elder.

“Great Elder, we are sorry for bringing them here, but we did not know where else to take them. Most were too traumatized to be able to tell us where they were fun.”

“Worry not, child, we will give them the night to rest and then see about locating their individual tribes to return who we can. The rest are welcome to remain with us, as long as they can contribute.”

As the two females spoke, a young boy approached, his gangly appearance making Lexi estimate him as just hitting puberty. His voice was quiet and respectful as he tried to politely interject on her conversation with the Elder.

“Elder… Miss… I know you have done much for us, but…”

“Speak, child.”

“I heard them talking, one night. I think I know where their boss is.”

Lexi’s eyes flared, fire burning in her belly. If she could find the leader, she could eliminate an entire branch of slave trade. While she wanted to shake the answers from the boy, she instead crouched in front of him with a friendly smile.

“Well, that would be very helpful. Where are they?”

The boy stuttered and stumbled through the words as he tried to repeat what he had heard, both her and the Elder listening intently. When the boy had finished his tale, she sent him back to the villagers to arrange a place for him to rest. Once he retreated, she pushed to her feet and looked at the Elder to see if the woman could fill in the blanks on the boy’s story.

“I believe I know where he may be talking about. About half a day’s travel from here, there are some small caves. It would make an ideal place to rest for a long spell. We typically head there for winter, when roaming the Plains is not advisable. It sets a decent distance off the main road, but is close enough to make transport a simple enough thing.”

Lexi nodded in understanding, contemplating. If she and Onyx were to go after these men, they would need enough supplies to last for over a day. She thanked the elder for the information before retiring to the hut where Onyx and Leo waited. She was nearly asleep on her feet by this time and made herself comfortable as she stretched out between her brother and her tiger, relaying all of the information she had learned to Onyx. Onyx’ face was filled with concern, sensing something was amiss with Lexi. It was not normal for her to tire so easily.

“Sister, must we? I do not want a slave trader around here anymore than you, but we still need to find our tribe.”

“Our tribe will never be safe, as long as there are traders so close. If we do not destroy them, they could simply follow us as we search for our tribe. How would you feel if we were responsible for that kind of devastation?”

Onyx’ head dropped dejectedly, unable to argue against her words. If their actions brought ruin to their tribe, he could never forgive himself.

“Very well, sister. But first, we will rest. I think you must be sick to be so tired. The traders will likely not receive news for a couple of days about us taking out one of their men. We will get plenty of rest tonight and prepare to leave tomorrow afternoon, okay?”

Lexi chose not to disagree, feeling her need for rest deep in her bones. She drifted to sleep within moments, the deep purring coming from Leo lulling her to the land of dreams.

Lexi slept until the sun was high in the sky and Onyx refused to disturb her, knowing she needed the rest. When she finally stirred, it was to a churning in her stomach and she rushed from the hut, darting behind it before falling to the ground to evacuate the meager contents of her stomach. Onyx, who had been preparing supplies for their small trip, came rushing over, rubbing her back soothingly, his face full of concern. Finally feeling her stomach settle a bit, she gratefully took the water skin he offered, sipping at the cold water despite her urge to guzzle it. She turned her face up to him with a grin.

“I guess dinner last night did not settle well. I will be fine. Are we almost ready to go?”

Onyx did not look convinced at her explanation but nodded towards Leo, the tiger fitted with a couple of packs filled with food and fresh water, along with Lexi’s bow and quivers. Not wanting to waste any more time, Lexi went back into the hut to change into fresh clothing. When she came back out, Onyx was just putting the last few supplies into the small bags attached to Leo. The Elder came over, making sure they understood where to find the caves before the siblings headed out.

The sun dipped below the horizon as they traveled and sounds of nocturnal life filled the Great Plains. Wolves could be heard howling in the distance and the hoots of owls echoed through the trees. The sounds were familiar and comforting to Lexi, reminding her of the time she had spent traveling with her family. When she had been in Heliohapt and Reim, the bustling cities never seemed to sleep and the night was filled with raucous laughter and raised voices. Here on the Plains, there was just as much noise, but it was more muted and infinitely more peaceful.

They kept a steady pace, not rushing to keep their energy, but wanting to make decent time. The longer they waited, the more likely it was the traders would hear about their last two attacks. They had to stop several times for Lexi to become sick, but she was insistent they continue. The moon was high in the sky when they finally spotted the rocky outcrops that led to the caves. They immediately moved slower to reduce the amount of noise they made, no longer chatting quietly. At the front of the cave, Lexi spotted four men, probably guards. They were joking and arguing amongst each other, not paying much attention to what might be in the night. It was rare to encounter anyone this far from the main road and so their guard had slipped. When a wolf’s cry cut across the field, they turned to seek out the source before deeming it a non-thread.

Lexi retrieved her bow and quiver from Leo’s back, Onyx silently unhooking the bags from the tiger so he could move more freely. Lexi’s stomach gave another tumble of upset before she forced it to settle. She did not have the time to be sick right now. Onyx made sure his dagger was ready as she and Leo silently shifted through the scrub of bushes, no trees this close to the rocks to give them cover. She held out a hand to keep Leo still, knowing that his claws would make too much noise on the scree near the mouth of the cave. With deft fingers, she pulled several arrows from her quiver and lined them carefully in her bow. With a deep breath, she pulled the string taut before releasing Multi-Shot, each of the four arrows finding a home in the throats of the guards, keeping them silent as they fell to the ground. Waving Onyx and Leo forward, she crept towards the cave.

The path through the cave was winding, not giving much room to maneuver should she need to avoid anything. As she rounded a corner, the air filled with curses as she ran into a Slave Warden, the man immediately raising his cleaver, meaning to bring it down in a Deep Impact. Lexi had only a breath to react, using Deflecting Shot to knock the blade to the side and away from her. Without a thought, she pulled back the bow once more, using Straight Shot II to take the Warden down. As he writhed on the ground, groaning in pain, Lexi used two basic shots, one in his throat and the other in his eye, to silence and kill the man. Fury burned in her eyes, uncaring that she had stolen yet another life. She knew these type of men too well, they would never change, even if given the chance. Better to end their lives and remove any chance of them spreading terror later.

Onyx made no comment on his sister’s cruelty, understanding her rage at the filth they were hunting down. It was odd to see her like this, though, filled with hatred and anger. Lexi shook in fury as she stared down at the bloody corpse of the Warden, wanting to rip him apart one limb at a time, even knowing he was dead. Memories flashed through her mind of seeing her parents trying to fight off the slave traders and of seeing Onyx jump into the fray after demanding she run. Like a coward, she had run like he said instead of staying to fight, and she still felt shame at her actions. She did not excuse her age or lack of combat knowledge. It had been her fault her family had been taken. Another memory drifted through her head, this time of seeing Onyx again in Reim, his body covered in bruises and scrapes from his time with the traders. He did not know she had carefully catalogued each and every wound and blamed herself for them.

If she had only stood and fought with her brother, perhaps their parents would still be alive and he would not have spent months incarcerated, shuffled from on auction to the other as they sought to find someone willing to pay a premium for his rare features. When Onyx set a hand on her shoulder, she jumped, shaking herself from her reverie. Now was not the time to lose focus. Leo nuzzled against her leg, nudging her further into the cave. He hated seeing his mistress in distress but knew she would not stop until her objective was complete.

With a sigh, she continued forward, Onyx scouting forward a bit to keep them from stumbling into another surprise. When he came across two more guards, he used his dagger to slit their throats before they could call out in danger. Lexi was thankful that she was not the only one filled with enough anger to kill. As they traveled through the winding cave, the tunnels widened more and more, giving them more room to spread out. Lexi relaxed slightly as the tunnels widened, hating the feeling of being trapped in such close quarters. With a small jerk, she realized it must be even more difficult for her brother after his time spent in shackles and cages. Her expression became more determined, she would make sure he never had to suffer such a thing again.

The tunnel led into a wide cavern and Lexi’s breath caught. The back of the cavern was filled with cages, each of the cages holding one or more slaves. So this is where they held the ‘merchandise’ until it was time to sell them. There were women and children filling most of the cages towards the left, while the cages on the right were filled with men, each one receiving their own cage. Her eyes flared when she took a closer look at one of the cages filled with children, spotting something familiar. Two of the children had the trademark animal ears perched on top of their heads, marking them as part of a Kimeer tribe. So distracted with this knowledge, she did not notice the Boss approach until an Icy Spear came streaking towards her.

Lexi wasted no time in stringing up a Deflecting Shot, the arrow shattering the ice of the spear. She quickly grabbed at more arrows in her quiver, launching Multi-Shot towards the Boss, all four arrows aimed for him. She growled when each of the arrows met an invisible barrier, the final arrow leaving a tinkling sound in the air as, with a small burst of glowing butterflies, the barrier seemed to disappear. Lexi had no knowledge of magic and did not understand that she was seeing the magoi disperse as his Borg was broken.

“Oh, you have some fight to you, don’t you, little girl?”

The words made Lexi grit her teeth, shooting a Straight Shot II towards the Boss. He gave a small wave of his cane, an Icy Sphere encasing the arrow and stopping its trajectory.

“I am afraid your little arrows won’t be enough.”

Lexi heard Leo growl as the tiger came around her on one side, Onyx appearing on her other side as he emerged from the tunnel.

“Oh, you have back up? Well, so do I… BOYS!”

From the edges of the cavern, four men appear and Lexi cursed to herself. She had focused so much on the cages, she had not looked around for other dangers. Onyx gripped his dagger tightly, nodding to Leo with a vicious grin before looking at Lexi.

“We have these guys, sis. You handle him.

Lexi nodded in understanding, smiling as Leo and Onyx split up to take out the guards while she looked to the Boss with a smirk. She knew she would need something stronger than usual, but her old bow had not been able to handle the stress or power. This bow, though… this one would do quite nicely. As the Boss looked to his guards, yelling profanities as they fought with her companions, Lexi flexed her fingers around the string of her bow, an arrow balanced carefully as she took aim. When the Boss turned his attention back to her, she released the tension on the string, launching Death Shot at the man. He did not even have time to react before the deadly arrow embedded in his skull, right between his eyes. The power behind the arrow had forced it to bury through the bone, killing the man instantly.

To her sides, Leo and Onyx were finishing up with the guards, neither of them leaving a guard breathing. Giving Leo a gentle scratch as he came over, she knelt down in front of him. The tiger seemed unscathed, which she was grateful for.

“Hey, sweet Leo. Will you scout through the tunnels and make sure we won’t have anything to fight on the way out?”

The tiger purred and immediately moved to pad down the tunnels, eager to protect his mistress. While her beast scouted for danger, Lexi and Onyx moved towards the back of the cave where the cages were standing, following the pleas and cries of the slaves to find the keys on the Boss’ body. Finally retrieving the metal ring, they made their way to each cage, freeing the slaves. When Lexi opened the cage of children, she tossed the keys to Onyx to finish while she knelt in front of the frightened kids.

“Hey there, kiddos! Come on out…”

Most of the children had parents in the other cages and made their way to them. The two Kimeer children edged forward, eyes widening at seeing Lexi’s tell-tale ears and twitching tail, clamoring forward in excitement at seeing one of their own tribe here rescuing them. From behind Lexi, a soft, gentle voice spoke.

“It is not often we see our own kin, outside of meeting with other tribes. Thank you, so very much.”

Lexi straightened, the young girl perched on her hip and happily playing with Lexi’s hair. The woman that had spoken had dark, canine ears buried in red strands and her fair skin was covered in bruises.

“I admit, we did not know there would be other of our kin here. We simply came to deal with the slavers. But it makes me supremely happy to know we were able to rescue you. Which branch do you travel with?”

The woman gently extracted the small girl from Lexi’s arms, wanting to make sure her child was unharmed. As she inspected the girl, she talked in that same quiet voice.

“We travel with the Northern Tribe, the Canis. I recognize you and your brother, I think. You are from the Ookami tribe, aren’t you?”

Lexi’s eyes brightened, nodding eagerly.

“Yes, though… we have lost the tribe. Onyx was taken by slavers and our parents were lost in the struggle. We were hoping to find the remaining Ookami, it is why we are traveling across the Plains alone.”

The woman froze at Lexi’s words, sorrow filling her face as she turned to look at Lexi.

“You haven’t heard… the Ookami were destroyed. I was shocked to see you, because everyone assumed you to be dead as well…”

Lexi’s world seemed to stop spinning them and she crumpled, only Onyx’ quick actions keeping her from hitting the ground. He had returned after freeing the rest of the slaves just in time to hear the last of the woman’s words. When Lexi had swayed on her feet, he rushed forward to keep her from striking her head on the stones in the cavern. The shock of the news overwhelmed Lexi and she began to hyperventilate. She had been too late. Her cowardice in the beginning had cost her not only her parents, but their entire tribe. A whimper rose in her throat as Onyx hugged her tightly, both of them crying, tears streaming down their faces.

The woman apologized, recognizing the keening sounds of grief. If she had known they were unaware of the fate of their tribe, she would have waited until they were in a more fitting place. Anger flooded Lexi’s face, mixing with the grief to twist her features into an unrecognizable mask. Pushing to her feet, she gave a sharp whistle, Leo loping back to her. His head cocked to the side at seeing his mistress’ face but stood obediently as she instructed the slaves to begin making their way from the cave. She only took enough time to gather the gold and valuables from the room before she tugged Onyx to his feet and led them from the cave.

The slaves followed as they began the trip back to the village they had been staying in, they would deal with sorting out who went where after they had some rest and food.
