The Next Morning
The smell of bacon cooking over a hot flame wafted through the air. "Rise and shine, sweethearts!" Abel shouted, loud enough to wake anyone that hadn't from the delicious scent of a hot breakfast. When the treasure-hunters stumbled out of their tents bleary-eyed, hungover, or well-rested, Abel served them a plate with a friendly smile. The treasure-hunters would be given time to eat their fill before being split into their pre-determined groups. Lagi, Merrze, and Bahir would be directed towards three pirates who were outfitted in gear suitable for a long hike. They each had a length of rope held at their waists, a shovel and pick strapped across their back expecting to dig, and an ornate vase slung over one shoulder.
The taller of the three pirates approached the treasure-hunters with a gruff tilt of his head, "Good morning, folks. The name's Dorian, this here is Chiggers and Giddy Lee. Guess you'll be the ones to watch our backs. You ready to uncover some treasure?" He pulled a folded sheaf of paper from his breast pocket, a copy of the map that had been made the night before. Dorian gestured to the red X with his pointer finger and ran it along the surrounding area. "Looks like we'll be traveling to the east through some hilly terrain. The legend of Gunner's treasure says that it's hidden in a cove, so we should keep the shore in sight as we travel, as much as we can."
He folded the paper up and put it back in his pocket after everyone had a chance to take a look at it, if they chose to. Dorian then adjusted his load and nodded to the treasure-hunters to lead the way. If Lagi suggested they use El Drago to fly to their destination, Dorian would hum to himself in thought before speaking up. "I've seen the way that dragon fights, he's ferocious. I'm sure he can carry all of us, but I would suggest conserving his strength for combat. I wouldn't want us to affect his maneuverability or get in the way if we ran into something." He wouldn't argue his point any further if Lagi preferred that the group flew to their destination instead of walked.
They would have to decide quick, however. With a loud groan, the island rumbled, awake once more. The crab-like creatures from the day before began surging out of the water along the beach. Madam Trixie quickly unsheathed her twin blades, running to the creatures. "GO NOW! We'll handle these bastards! Remember to hurry up, the fog closes tomorrow!"
Assuming the group did walk, they would begin their journey following the coastline to the east. The light glittered brilliantly off the crystal water of the bay to their left. They would travel for some time before Dorian noticed that the forest to their right had begun to slope upwards. He informed the group that it was time to start climbing to a higher elevation. The tree-covered canopy filtered out the sun, what little light escaped cast shadowy shapes between the trees.
A few hours of traveling up an incline in the dimly-lit jungle, the group finally came to a break in the trees. Lush green grasses covered the rolling hills and the trees grew sparse after several meters. The peak of a tall mountain loomed in the distance and if the treasure-hunters squinted their eyes, they could see black-specks circling it. Whatever the creatures were, they were too far away to pose a threat at the moment so Dorian suggested they continue on.
They climbed over a rise in the landscape and a sharp wind tugged on the group's clothing as it passed by. To the left, the group could see the lapping waters about an hour's walk away. Beyond that, they could see the impenetrable fog, a reminder that they were trapped on a dangerous island. Straight ahead, the ground sloped downward into a small valley with a river winding through it.
As they began to descend into the valley, the vegetation began to grew thicker with clumps of tall grass and waist-high shrubs. Just as they neared the river, the rustling of leaves could be heard to their left. Out of a thick clump of shrubs twenty meters away, came a pack of six Rhinejulah. The toughened grey hide of the beasts quivered, startled by the appearance of the group. They stomped their hooves and their mouths opened in three sections to let out a otherworldly howl. On either side of the beast's head, three tentacles protruded outward, writhing madly. The top pair of tentacles were fashioned with a stinger and were five meters long. The lower pairs were slightly smaller and served two functions--they were used to grip things like an extra hand and used to feel the environment with vibrations it emitted.
Two of the Rhinejulah burrowed into the earth, using their tentacles to push aside the dirt. They traveled four meters below the surface and then began burrowing towards the treasure-hunters. As they moved, the beasts emitted barely inaudible vibrations, just out of the range of human-hearing, to sense any movement above them. Once the burrowed Rhinejulah were underneath their prey, they would wait for an opportune time to strike.
Meanwhile, the other four Rhinejulah worked in unison to assault the group. Two of the Rhinejulah (A&B) moved forwards two meters and emitted a low-frequency screech, by sending tremors their lower pair of tentacles. The noise traveled in a wave that created a dull buzz, disorienting the balance of anyone it hit. Moving behind the wave, the other Rhinejulah (C&D) started running towards the treasure-hunters, looking to get within four meters of the closest targets.
