Spoiler:

Apparently the trouble with the Rabid Coyotes was far from over and didn’t seem to affect only farmers. The beasts were apparently seen scavenging the bodies of the dead in a town that was unfortunately part of General Kaito’s warpath. When the relatives of the deceased had tried to claim the bodies of family members, they found the Rabid Coyotes feasting on the corpses of their loved ones. Even the anger of the distraught citizens could not best the tricky beasts as only a few of the coyotes had been killed before the people had pulled back to treat their wounds and rest from the poison in their systems.

The news was sickening, like salt in the wounds of the surviving Reim citizens who now could not even find solace in burying their dead properly. Upset by this, Ayero had volunteered to travel to the destroyed town and take care of the coyote problem. She knew from experience how quick and dangerous the beasts could be, but she was confident in her abilities and did not want to allow the Rabid Coyotes to disturb the dead if she could help it. Determined to slay the beasts and allow the dead to rest in peace, Ayero set out for the appointed town.

When she had finally arrived, the Fanalis woman felt her heart sink at what she saw. Building were destroyed and toppled over, homes were charred and bodies of men, women and children littered the streets. Similar to the Western Front, things were eerily silent and sparked an uneasy feeling in the pit of Ayero’s stomach. Though scavenging through an enemy camp for supplies was unsettling, the scene before her was heartbreaking. These people were not enemy soldiers, they were innocent citizens who had paid the price of a war they did not want.

Familiar feelings of anger and injustice towards Kou welled up inside her, feelings that had been simmering on the backburner of her mind until now. She had done well to ignore them after Lagi’s final address, concentrating on helping rebuild Reim instead of letting her feelings consume her. Bastards…! Ayero grit her teeth to try and keep her anger controlled, turning her gaze away from the bodies. Kou influence was gone from their country, but the damage they had done would have last effects.

Drawing in a deep breath, Ayero’s head snapped upwards as a noise reached her ears. It was the first noise she had heard since arriving in this town, and the Fanalis woman followed the direction of the sound with her eyes, gaze landing on a pack of coyotes that were scavenging a pile of dead bodies. The beasts didn’t seem to notice her at first, too preoccupied with their noses down against their meals. Growling, Ayero’s face hardened and she drew her blade in flourish before jogging over towards the beasts.

Ayero didn’t try to be stealthy as she charged toward the feasting coyotes, but she did try to avoid stepping on any stray limbs in her path, not wanting to disrespect the deceased any more than had already been done. As the noise of the woman drew closer, the Rabid Coyotes looked up from their meal and snarled at the approaching woman for disturbing them.

Ayero zeroed in on the coyotes, counting six of them as she approached. Knowing that the coyotes were able to pounce at an impressive speed, the Fanalis formed a quick plan in anticipation of being pounced. As she had predicted, four of the six bore their fangs and performed a Puntra Pounce, arcing around her at different angles. Waiting until her prey was close enough, Ayero raised her blade and kicked off from the ground with one foot, sending her body into a spin. Her Pinwheel Blade slashed across the faces and bellies of all four approaching coyotes, the beasts dropping to the ground and whimpering in pain as the blade dealt devastating damage to their bodes.

One of the two remaining Rabid Cototes had Puntra Pounced the moment the others fell, snarling and gnashing his teeth as he aimed for Ayero’s throat. Mimicking her own movements during her last bout with the beasts, Ayero crouched under the airborne coyote and cut along the length of the creatures stomach with her blade before moving quickly out of the way. The beast landed to the ground with a heavy thud, in too much pain from the devastating wound to make much noise.

The last remaining wolf charged towards Ayero, nearly foaming at the jaw as he prepared to deal a Rabid Bite to the Fanalis woman. But he was met with a sweeping kick from the woman’s leg to the side of his body, yelping as he was sent several meters away and crashed to the ground in a similar fashion as the beast before him. Though heavily damaged, he was still alive and had full control of his vocals. Using this to his advantage, the defeated wolf let out a piercing howl as a cry for help.

Ayero frowned at the noisy beast and her sword arm twitched, wanting to drag her blade across his throat and end the annoying sound as well as his life. She was still upset, projecting her anger towards Kou onto the Rabid Coyotes, not even stopping to think about how the beasts were simply doing what they were intended to do.

A chorus of growls and snarls behind her alerted the woman to a fresh pack of threats. Spinning around on her heel, Ayero gawked at the sight of five more Rabid Coyotes prowling towards her, all looking very angry. Realizing that the howling coyote was calling for help, Ayero cursed her luck and gave the beasts a challenging growl of her own. Suddenly, a sharp pain scored through her legs and she looked down with a startled expression. A sixth coyote had snuck up behind her and managed to land a Rabid Bite on her, teeth sinking into the woman’s upper thigh. The coyote glared up at her through a low growl as one of the coyotes from the new pack used a Puntra Pounce towards her. The four other coyotes burrowed underground as the first coyote’s jaw began to loosen around Ayero’s leg.

Trying to think quickly with so many enemies approaching her, Ayero as able to successfully shake the beast latched to her leg away, her Alchemist Charm once again nullifying the effects of the poison so that only minor damage remained. Thrusting her free fist at the pouncing coyote, Ayero used Knockback to send the coyote flying 10 meters away, knowing that the force behind her fist would be enough to cause a good amount of damage to the beast. If not, then she had at least bought herself some time by sending him further away.

The four coyotes who had burrowed underground surfaced all at once, surrounding the woman on each side. Ayero’s heart beat rapidly in her chest at seeing them all so close but she steeled herself and slammed a foot into the ground, using Magnitude to shake the earth around her. The coyotes began to yelp and scream as the ground they were attempting to surface from began to shake and shift violently, causing heavy damage to their bodies.

Just as she pressed her foot into the ground to perform her attack, a searing pain spiked through her other thigh. Wincing at the sudden pain, Ayero looked down to see the last remaining coyote with his teeth sunken into her upper thigh. …! In the chaos of the battle she had forgotten about the wolf who had initially bit her, concentrating on causing damage to the threats around her as quickly as possible. Her Alchemist Charm did not kick in this time, and Ayero began to feel the familiar effects of poison as it worked her way into her system.

The surprise of the bite and Ayero’s slowed movements from the poison allowed the coyote to remove his teeth from her leg and jump upwards, landing a clean Swift Claw down the length of her face and neck. Hissing in pain, the woman stumbled backwards and dropped her sword, lashing out with her hand in blind desperation. Her fingers closed around the Rabid Coyote’s throat in a Crushing Grip, choking the beast and crushing its throat in her tight grip before releasing her hold on him.

Shit…can’t see… Ayero wiped the blood from the damaged side of her face, the crimson fluid obscuring her vision. She was breathing heavily from both the poison and the rapid battle as she tried to steady herself. Looking around, Ayero counted the defeated forms of the coyotes as they lay strewn among the bodies of innocents. It was silent now and her stomach began to turn, causing her to wretch at the putrid scent of decaying bodies and her own disgust with the situation.

Her heart beat anxiously in her chest and she fought down the feeling of panic rising in her chest, forcing herself to focus on bandaging her wounds and reporting the completed task as quickly as possible. Perhaps I should go back into the mountains, even if only for a little while…
