Enemy - Slave Wardens:

Damsels in Distress
Adrastos Thanatos still had not found his master after searching more after his last job. From what he was told after asking around in Magnostadt, the old man hadn't been seen in the past four months or so. It made him wonder if, like his other two masters were rumored to be, isolated in the middle of nowhere. Adrastos, thinking that maybe his master had gone out to the plains, the only place near Magnostadt that could be considered isolated, ventured there when the day was still young. What he found there was not his teacher, but rather a nomadic tribe which was going through a state of disaster. Many of the men were injured, and the elderly and children were taking care of them. What Adrastos thought was odd was the severe lack of women in the tribe compared to the men. The blue magician walked over to one of the children and knelt down. "What happened here?"

The child looked up with his eyes wide. "Slave traders came and took my sister and a few other women in the tribe. My father and the rest of the warriors tried to stop them, but they couldn't, receiving mainly injuries. The slave trader then ran off to the south with everyone in cages." He whimpered as tears began to fall from his eyes like salty waterfalls. "Please, can you help us? You could be our only hope in rescuing them."

"Look, kid. I'm not much of a fighter and I don't do things for free. I'm just a magician looking for someone. I could help, but only if I get something in return. That's just how I do business. I don't prance around with a kind heart helping everyone who needs assistance without some sort of payment." The kid sniffled, wiping his eyes with his fragile little arm. "But, we can pay you. I'm sure if you rescued them and returned them without any injuries, you'd be rewarded by the head of the tribe."

Adrastos heaved a heavy sigh while passing his hand over his face. Money, eh? Seems like too much trouble really. There's no telling how far they slave traders went, or if they even changed directions. The blue magician looked at the boy and groaned. He looked at him pleadingly as if he were a puppy in need of love from its owner. "Fine. I'll need some sort of transportation though." "You can take one of our horses."

The blue mage saddled up the horse. He had never really ridden an animal before, finding it much better to walk on his own two feet since he could actually control them. Controlling another beast's movements looked to be a much more difficult task. If it weren't for the boy, Adrastos would have tied himself up with the horse instead or would have made the long trek on foot. "It's simple," said the boy. "Just remember what I told you." Adrastos grunted, pulling the reigns a bit. "Yeah, yeah. Enough wasting time. Let's just get this thing over with." He flicked the reigns and guided the horse southward, the last direction the slave traders were seen going.

Adrastos rode through the plains, searching for any signs of the slave traders. The wind whipped back his hair back while the ride itself jostled his silver locks in every direction. The sun was slowly beginning to set. If he didn't hurry soon, he'd waste even more time when he could be learning and training to get stronger. Adrastos mentally cursed himself, wondering why he had taken this job. He should have just walked away. Perhaps there was still a little bit of good left in hims. That didn't feel right. Good? After everything he had been through, why should he help others? They did nothing for him except get in his way. Damn it all.

The blue magician pulled on the reigns tightly to stop the horse he was riding. There, about a few meters or so out, rested the slave traders. They looked to be having some trouble with their 'merchandise'. One man grabbed one of the females roughly by the hair and shook her as if she were just some silly rag doll. To them though, that was exactly what she was.

Seeing this act of violence triggered a switch that repeated the boys words in Adrastos' head. If he wanted to get paid, those girls couldn't have so much as a scratch on them. The blue magician flicked the reigns and kicked the beast's side to make it run fast. Once within range, Adrastos casted Aqua Canno II at the man who held one of the women by her hair. Nobody saw it coming. The man fell to the ground, leaving the woman sitting there with a glazed over expression on her face as she tried to understand what had just happened.

The other slave traders, looking to be more like slave wardens, unsheathed their weapons from their scabbards. They advanced, gradually increasing their speed until they sprinted at 9 m/s. One slave warden slashed at Adrastos, but his Borg activated without hesitation, canceling out the man's attack with ease. However, another warden took the opportunity and struck Adrastos in the shoulder with Deep Impact. Adrastos groaned and backed up when the cleaver was pulled from his flesh. He casted Glaciem Aqua Sagitta, commanding the rukh to form arrows of water that would be sent at the man after being turned into ice. Adrastos watched as the salve warden parried away the spell with Basic Parry. Another warden attacked with his cleaver, hitting the magician in the right arm, dealing a giant gash that ripped open his flesh.

Adrastos staggered. His silver eyes looked around him. As of now, there were three remaining slave warden's and a total of six women. Two of those warden's were fending off Adrastos while the other one remained next to the women. He had to get that one away from the women. He endangered them, and he couldn't risk losing any money if these creatures were harmed. Perhaps an airborne assault would work, thought Adrastos. No, you'll risk hurting them. The only thing you can do is fight off the opponents you are facing now. Worry about that one later.

Adrastos dodged as one of the wardens lunged. He casted Aqua Canno and Aqua Bulla, knocking him to the ground and rendering him unconscious. Two more. With losing yet another man, the warden that was guarding the girls, moved into the battle. Adrastos took another hit from Deep Impact, but this time in his left arm. Soon after, he was hit with a cleaver in the thigh. Adrastos then casted Glacialis Lamnia. One of the warden's tried to block it using Basic Parry, but fell prey to the blade of ice which cut him down easily. Now, there was only one warden left, and he was not happy about his fallen comrades. The last warden lunged, letting lose a cry of anguish and desperation. Adrastos side stepped then used Adrustum Aura II. The man fell to the ground with his skin covered in dark blue and black patches.

The blue magician didn't relax until a few agonizing minutes had passed. None of the slave wardens moved, which led the silver haired man to assume they were down and would no longer pose a threat. Adrastos walked over to the women, checked them for any signs of damage, then untied them. None of them had a single scratch by the looks of it. "Thank you, magician." Adrastos shook his head. "Don't thank me. I still need to get you back to your tribe." There were no other forms of transportation other than the carriage and his horse. These six women wouldn't be able to fit on one creature, so that left only one option. "Sorry ladies, but it looks like you'll have to stay here so I am able to transport you all back safely."

Once the horse was attached to the carriage, Adrastos made his way back to the tribe. The journey was slow since there was no real need to rush, and it was very quiet.  No words were spoken. There was just silence. Adrastos relished the lack of sound to enjoy the gentle breeze that made the tall grass sway and dance underneath the warm rays of the sun. The scent of wheat and wild flowers lingered in the air, providing a calm atmosphere that was relaxing. These were things that Adrastos did not notice as he was in a hurry to rescue the girls while chasing the slave traders. It was nice to slow down and take in the scenery just once.

When the blue magician arrived with the women, those who could stand rejoiced, thanking the magician for his kindness. The little boy from earlier beamed brightly at the sight of his sister and thanked Adrastos. The tribe elder, an hunched over old man, hobbled over toward the mage who toward over him. "Thank you, young one, for returning our women to us. For your help, I hope that you will accept this as a token of our thanks." The old man held out a pouch. Adrastos swiped it quickly and placed the bag in his pockets. "Thank you, but I do have one question. I am looking for an old magician. The people in Magnostadt say that he hasn't been around for awhile, and I was wondering if he may have traveled here. He's tall, white hair, wears purple, and has a black cat sitting on his shoulder." The elderly man nodded. "I have seen such a magician recently. In fact, he came through just last month. I believe he went east." East? Toward Kou? "Thank you."

Adrastos left without another glance back, heading east as the old tribe elder had directed. This game of hide and seek ends now, old man.
