Ariella kept a close eye on all of the children as they made their way up the side of the Mountain. Jarl was leading the way and she brought up the rear, minimizing the chances that any of the, now, six children in their care. Lavicus was directly behind Jarl and the other four Grumptoes were behind him, excited voices drifting through the trees. Ari kept close to Vincenzo, who was near the end of the line by her, making sure to never let him out of her sight. She would not fail Ayero’s faith that she could keep the woman’s brother safe. She thought about her own experiences with her sibling and hoped the two would have lots of time to bond after Ayero finished with whatever it was she was really doing with the Imuchakk man. A friendly smile gracing her face, she walked beside the young half-Fanalis boy.

“So, Vin. Have you lived on the mountain your whole life? Me and the kids have spent most of our time in a city, so this is all kind of strange to us.”

Despite having spent his entire life in mountainous terrain, Vincenzo Shiba still felt a bit awkward as he trailed along after the younger children. Two life-changing events had occurred over the span of only a few days, and the young Fanalis boy was having trouble figuring out what emotions to feel. He was no longer surrounded by death and stillness, instead he was surrounded by the lively shouts of friendly children and the warm adults that were escorting them. The excitable kids kept him distracted from thinking about Ayero and his family. The duty of teaching them the ways of the mountain that his older sister had entrusted him with was on his mind as well.

When Ariella addresses him, his head jerks up as if he’d been shaken from his thoughts. He looks up at her with a startled expression for a moment before that look dissolves into a more flustered one, his cheeks heating up as he looks away for a few moments to compose himself. Vin thought of Areilla as very pretty and kind, but the 9 year old boy vowed to not let this infatuation in the way of his job. Nodding in affirmation, the boy spoke.

”My whole life. I kind of want to visit a city though, but I hear that they can be dangerous…” Vin had heard stories of what “the big city” was like and yearned to see the towering buildings and the bustling marketplace. What amazed him most was the idea of seeing hundreds of people grouped into one place. Squinting ahead at the Grumptoes, Vincenzo tries to get used to only using one of his eyes. ”You sure have a lot of kids, Miss Ari…”

Ariella listened to his soft voice, taking note of the blush on his cheeks, but not drawing attention to it. He seemed very sure footed in the rocky terrain, unlike the other kids that kept tripping and stumbling over themselves. At his last comment, she chuckled softly.

"They aren't my kids. They all have their own parents, but I help out with watching them. Their families don't have much, so me and a friend of mine are trying to make sure they get a good education and get to see some of the world. It is important to see how different people live. That is why I brought them out here today. All they have seen is the city and, more recently, my farm. But none of them have seen the mountains."

She called out to Lavicus as the boy jumped onto a large boulder with a loud cry, acting like he had defeated some great monster.

"Lavicus, you are scaring away all the wildlife! Get down from there before you bust your butt!"

She chuckled as the boy pouted but obediently climbed down. It did not take long for them to come to a creek and Jarl declared it was time to have a snack and rest. While the boys dug into their little cloth bags of fruit and nuts, Jarl went about filling up the water skins with fresh water.

"So, what kind of animals do you think we might see out here, Vin?"

As she asked the question, two of the younger boys came over and clamored excitedly, wanting to know what great adventure they might encounter up here. She gave the boys a gently reprimanding look, not wanting to overwhelm Ayero's brother, who looked like he had not been around a large group of other kids.

”O-oh…” Vin muttered softly and looked down as a new flush crossed his face., this one of embarrassment at having through that all of these kid belonged to Ariella. But his silly mistake was soon forgotten when Ari reveals that she’d been educating and exposing these children to new environments. Vin and his siblings never had a formal education, they never needed to learn to read or write or do arithmetic with their lifestyle. But they knew how to hunt and raise game and which plants were poisonous and which could cure a headache. Above all, they knew how to survive in the mountains.

”Not a lot of people live in the mountains.” Vin pauses to reflect before adding, ”Well, not this far up. Most travelers don’t go too high up the mountain, unless they’re lost.”

Smiling a bit nervously as he now had an audience, Vin takes a few moments to ponder the question. ”Umm…probably some…squirrels, and maybe snakes and sheep. Deer live here too, but they don’t like loud noises…” He smiles sheepishly, recalling the noise that these city folk had made. ”There are bigger animals too, like bears and mountain cats. But those live really far up, but my sister said that we shouldn’t go too far up the mountain…” He pauses before addressing the two younger children who had come to listen. ”Are there animals in the big city, too?”

Ari hid a grin from the flustered Vin, tugging back one of the other boys as he nearly climbed into Vin's lap.

"Most of the time, all we have in the city is cats and dogs. But on the farm, we have cows and horses. And in the woods, there are some weird creatures."

She was cut short at a loud cry of surprise and turned just in time to see one of the boys slip off one of the massive boulders and tumble down the side, landing on his head at the bottom.

"JARL! HELP!"

She yelled for the farm foreman in a panic as she ran over to check on the boy, making sure not to touch him until Jarl could come look at him. The boy's head was bleeding from a cut and there was a large lump forming on his forehead. She wrung her hands in worry, not well versed in first aid. Her mother had been a life magician, if they ever hurt themselves, she just healed them, but she did not want to risk healing the boy without knowing where all the injuries were just yet.

”Ohh…” Vin nods at Ari’s description, his one visible green eye shining at the thought of going to visit a city and seeing all of the new sights. Some families in the village had kept dogs for hunting and protection and cats as mousers, but he wondered how many that there were in the big city.

He scrambles to his feet in surprise, mimicking Ari’s worry as they witness one of the boys tumble down the rocks. Wondering why Ari wasn’t rushing to help the boy (she was an adult after all, and in his mind all adults knew how to care for bleeding and bruised children), he looks up at the magician woman and catches the worried look in her eye. Head turning back to where the boy had fallen, the Fanalis child pulls on Ari’s sleeve to get her attention. ”We should put some snow on the bump on his head.” He tugs at Ayero’s scarf which was wrapped around his neck, slowly unraveling it. ”We can put it in this. It’ll make it hurt less.” Being the youngest in his family, Vin was so used to being the one taken care of. But now another child needed his help, and he felt as if he had a sense of duty.

Ari turned to the tug at her sleeve, relief flooding her features. She hated feeling useless, but at least someone knew what to do. She grabbed the scarf and kissed Vin’s forehead before rushing over to a pile of snow and shoveling it into the scarf. By the time she returned to Timmy’s side, Jarl had arrived and straightened him out after making sure the foolish child had not snapped his neck. Ari knelt and placed the scarf of snow on the welt forming on the boy’s head, being as gentle as she could. Grabbing the edge of her skirt, she ripped part of it off and wet it down with her water skin, using the damp cloth to clean the cut on the boy’s head. It was a pretty deep gouge and she sucked in her breath, worried at how deep it was.

While she cleaned the wound, Jarl checked the boy over for any other injuries, Timmy crying loudly, partially in pain but mostly in surprise. He knew that when adults acted like this, it was serious and it was adding to his panic. Ari tried to whisper soothing noises at him, waiting until Jarl nodded at her to let her know the only injuries were the ones she could see before she pulled her wand out.

Using her free hand, she gently scooted the other boys back, unsure of how it might affect the spell if one of them touched Timmy while she cast. Closing her eyes in concentration, she focused on the rukh fluttering around her, the white doves fluttering about as she pleaded with them to heal the boy, casting her Major Heal with a hopeful whisper. The rukh fluttered around her, responding to her plea. She watched as Timmy quieted slightly and sniffled out a question about the little butterflies and she realized he was probably seeing the rukh. The gash on his forehead sealed shut and she ran the cloth over the skin again to make sure it was clean and healed. She carefully pulled away the scarf of snow to see the swelling there go down as well.

She sat back on her heels, breathing a sigh of relief that the spell had worked. She was still not fully comfortable with the healing aspects of magic. She gave Timmy a playful scowl.

“Don’t do that again, young man. Had me all worried!”

With a smile, she turned to Vin, her eyes serious but grateful.

“Thank you so much, Vin. I don’t know much first aid. You were really helpful. I am glad you came along!”

Vin tried to smile encouragingly at Ari, but his expression turned to one of awkward surprise as she kisses his forehead in thanks. His cheeks begin to flush red for the umpteenth time today and he stands a bit hesitantly, wondering what he should do now. He wanted to make Ayero proud and help more, but he didn’t know how else he could help seeing as how the adults were taking care of the situation. Standing on his tiptoes, the young fanalis tilts his head and squints ahead of him, trying to make out Timmy’s small figure between Ari and Jarl. After a moment of pause, he moves toward the injured boy, his brotherly instincts kicking in. Although he was the youngest of his brood, he was eager to try and assume a big brother-type role, one he had admired for nearly 10 years.

He stops a few feet away as he witnesses Ari heal Timmy’s wound almost instantly, his mouth dropping open at the sight. Though Ayero and Yakuroro assured him that magic was indeed real, this was the first act of magic he’d ever seen.

”That was amazing! I’ve never seen anything like that…was that magic? Can you heal anything? Can you teach me how to do that?” Vin had closed the distance between him and Ariella quickly, exclaiming excitedly with a wide eye. After his little outburst registered, he looked at the ground, a bit embarrassed for some reason before turning to Timmy. He smiles encouragingly at the boy and reaches out a hand, perhaps to pat him on the head or shoulder. But due to the boy’s recent injuries and his own Fanalis strength, he thinks better of it and withdraws his hand. ”You were really brave. Falling around here can be really dangerous and scary. You gotta be careful!” He offers the younger child a bright smile.

Ari looked up startled at Vin before realizing the boy had probably never seen magic, especially considering his family was half-Fanalis. She ruffled his hair affectionately.

"Yes, that was magic. I healed him with magic. I would have done it sooner, but healing someone without knowing how badly they are hurt can be a bad thing, you might heal something wrong. Unfortunately, I can't teach you magic until I talk to your sister. It is really difficult for anyone with Fanalis blood to do magic, so I would have to find a tool for you. But I will talk to her and see, okay?"

Ari chuckled as he began talking to Timmy, who was looking around dazedly. When Vin started speaking to him, Timmy gave a bright smile, the seriousness of his injuries fading away and his child-like invincibility coming into play.

"Naw, I was alright. Miss Ari has got us covered. But you sure know a lot. Wanna go play in the snow?"

Ari covers her face with her palm at the quick recovery of the boy, hoping they would avoid any more incidents like this one before returning to the village. Hoping Ayero and her quest to "guide" the Imuchakk were going well, she rounded all the boys up and Jarl began leading them to their planned camping spot for the day.

The Fanalis child listens with wide eyes and open ears, giving Ari his full attention. He’d been skeptical of magic’s existence when Ayero and her supposed magician friend, Yakuroro, had spoken of it as truth. But this was the first time he’d seen it in action. He looks around, noting that the other children seemed to be more focused on their injured companion or, after seeing that he was fine, resuming their own activities. None of them seemed to be particularly amazed at the bit of magic that had taken place.

He doesn’t seem deterred from the idea of magic even when Ari gently mentions that Fanalis aren’t able to perform magic. He has no idea what a magic tool is, but hopes that Ayero would deem it safe enough for him to use. His eyes reflect the curiosity and wonder of a child who was confronted with something new and amazing as his mouth continues to spill forth questions. ”Can you do other things with magic? The doctors in the city, can they all do magic too?”

Turning back to the younger boy, Vin rubs the back of his head awkwardly. ”Are you sure that you should? Does it still hurt?” He looks up at Ari for clearance, still not used to seeing wounds healed almost instantly. In his short experience, a fall like that would warrant a trip to the village medicine man and no more playing outside until mother said so. He follows Ari and the others quickly, his mind still stuck to the idea of magic.

Ari chuckled at the child’s wonder with magic, remembering he had probably never seen it, growing up in a household of half-Fanalis. She ruffled his hair again.

“Some of the doctors can, sure. But some just use good old fashioned methods. Where I grew up, everyone could do magic, though! A whole city of just magicians. But the cities here have lots of different kinds of people, magicians and non-magicians.”

When the other boy wanted to play and explore, Vin seemed very unsure and Ari gave him a nod to let him know it as okay.

“It’s alright, he should be fine now. But we should hurry to the camping spot for the night so we can get set up before it gets really cold. You guys can play there after we get set up, okay? Now hurry up before Jarl leaves us all behind and eats all the food!”

The kids al scrambled to catch up to the farm foreman, who was chuckling at their antics. Lavicus was trying to jump across the creek without getting wet and almost made the jump but one of his feet slipped back into the water, soaking his foot. It was going to be an uncomfortable trip for him until they got the fire set up to dry him out.

Vin eagerly bobs his head, excited at the idea of leaning more about magic. Won’t his sister be impressed when he relays to her all that he’s seen today! The boy always loved seeing different animals in the forest and hearing stories of the outside world, but Ari’s magic had captivated him completely! He hoped that Ayero would allow him to learn how to use magic, unaware that it was impossible for Fanalis to become magicians. But Ari hadn’t said that it was impossible for them to use magic, so his hope and excitement ran high. Eagerly speeding after the other kids, he did his best to make sure that the younger children didn’t end up hurting themselves.
