The Great Slave Auction JZ5YFiD

A large area in Heliohapt was set aside this day for a very special event. Inns closed, shops locked their doors, and citizens were temporarily removed from their homes, relocated to short term housing. About thirty percent of the entire city was cleared out as "rented space" and had been refurbished into the worlds largest auction venue. The doors to various buildings along the streets were blocked by long narrow stages with a podium at one end and iron rings poking up from the floor boards at spaced intervals. The interiors were converted from their original purposes into holding cells. Plazas and were filled with luxury food and drink and turned into processing centers for bought goods. The Great Slave Auction was beginning.

The streets were filled with people looking to buy slaves as dawn rose and the slave owners began leading their merchandise onto the stages. Almost immediately, money began to fly back and forth as the rich and privileged began to bid over people who had nothing. But the real auction had yet to begin as none of the highly anticipated Fanalis had taken the stage just yet. Never the less, rumors that someone was planning to break a large number of slaves free had only become more widespread now that the event began and many Heliohaptan Royal guards were dispatched on scene to keep the peace and ensure such acts of rebellion were quickly squashed.

Thier job was made difficult however, as many of the people looking to buy slaves had encountered a young boy who was selling masks for incredibly cheap prices. Those with a sense of guilt or a kink for anonymity had taken the boy up on his sale and now more than half the auction goers were hiding their identities making it almost impossible to distinguish who was suspicious and who was simply jumping on the bandwagon.

Slipping the mask over her face, Ayero’s fingers work quickly to knot the tie in back in order to secure the covering in place. Her hands shake ever so slightly as she throws the hood of her cloak over her head, smoothing a few loose tendrils of hair underneath the fabric. It was stupid for her to simply be here; a lone Fanalis-human woman at the world’s largest slave auction. But the halfling had traveled to Heliohapt for this sole purpose and she wasn’t about to let her nerves get in the way, which is why she took every precaution possible to neutralize her identity. Her own run-in with slave traders shortly after she had left her home nine years ago flashes through her mind in a sort of warning. Collapsing her right hand into a fist she takes in a deep breath, resolving to steady herself and be as smart as possible about this. She wasn’t that naïve little girl anymore, she was a capable adult.

Slithering out of the alleyway, the black-clad woman melds swiftly into swarming crowds. The streets were much busier than usual and held a different atmosphere as well. Strange men were yelling and barred carts holding slaves drove past. Most everyone on the street acted as if this were the most normal thing in the world, but perhaps that was because the majority of them hid behind masks. The whole experience was uncomfortably surreal and she steels her resolve to keep moving forward. She had come this far and was potentially close to reuniting with her lost brother.

”Watch it.” A deep voice growls and the halfling stops short, having been so lost in thought that she had nearly walked into a man…a man leading a row of heavily chained slaves. He spares her a quick glare but the people he’s leading remained hunched over in submission, not daring to look up. Silently letting them pass, she makes her way to the main auction stage by following the signs posted. Standing at the edge of the sea of people gathered at the stage, she watches in disgust as a fully nude young woman is paraded around. The jeers and offers from the crowd are sickening, but her eyes shift to the side of the auction. Perhaps, if I could find a way behind the scenes…

After hearing rumors of a massive slave auction taking place in Heliohapt, Diego's blood began a slow boil. The idea of owning another person and taking away their right to live, their right to choose how to live, was a grievous slight, one that Diego could not forgive. He had taken off earlier in the day to walk around, scoping out the stages.

Diego rode atop Madam Trixie so he could see above the crowds, with Zanzibar hugging onto his shoulders. There were signs posted to show the way to different areas, Diego heading to the main stage. A young, nude woman stood on stage, the sight bringing a blush to his cheeks. He averted his eyes, surveying the area, spotting a line of slaves led by chains. Diego squeezed his legs softly, Trixie moving forward as he led her with his knees. They wove through the crowd, approaching the line and stopped next to a masked person nearby. Rage glimmered in Diego's eyes as he saw the defeated expressions on the slave's faces.

While many bet on slaves, caught up in the frenzy that swept through the crowds, there were a select few with other intentions, lurking among them. Several small children scanned the crowd, searching for those who displayed a disgust of the event. They would approach, slipping notes in people's hands as they melded into the crowd. The note read, 'If the performance on stage fills you with contempt, meet me to change the final act.' Underneath, there was a drawing of a map, a circle hovered over a house.

A man covered in a dark cloak and mask, hovered near the boy handing out masks, watching the faces of the one's who grabbed them. He watched a Fanalis woman purchase a mask and take an alleyway towards the auction. Smirking under his mask, he shadowed her as she made her way to the slave lines. He watched her search around, seeming to look for openings and security, instead of the slaves. Before he could say something, a teen Fanalis boy riding a tiger approached, a look of anger burning in his eyes.

Slipping between the two, he whispered so that only they could hear him. "I recognize that anger, if you wish to help them, follow me." He waited a few heartbeats before turning around and slipping through the crowds. If they followed, he would lead them to the house that the note indicated, waving off questions until they arrived.

Dynatos had been mixed in the crowd wearing a black hood. Something late he rarely wore. The time hade finally come; the Fanalis Slave Auction would happen on this night. Dynatos had heard rumors of someone planning to free the slaves and Dynatos would help and take this opportunity to invite the freed slaves to join him. He also hoped to find his Moth, Father, or both mixed in with the massive amounts of slaves. He moved on the outskirts of the ground and noticed someone he had seen before. He did not know the man's name, but he was with two other people. This intrigued Dynatos, so he quickly followed the trio as the vanished from the crowd.

Diego noticed a cloaked figure slip by him. A male voice whispered that they had a plan to free the slaves, before turning into the crowd. Curious, Diego squeezed his thighs slightly, indicating to Trixie to follow the man. They made their way through the crowd, coming upon a less crowded street. Diego tried to ask the man what his intentions were, but he simply waved it off and led them to a house. He waited a second as the man walked in, he was hesitant, it might be a trap. He took a deep breath and steeled himself for what was beyond the door.

Her eyes catch a flame of red hair situating itself next to her and she turns her head slightly in nervous curiosity. Is that… There, sitting atop a tiger completely out in the open was what she had feared. Ayero could have sworn that her heart froze in place as she fought the urge to jump and scold the boy for being some place so dangerous and for not taking the proper precaution to hide his heritage on top of it. But as she holds  herself back from causing a scene, she’s able to notice the look of disgust in the boy’s eyes. Huh…perhaps he has a reason for being here…

As she’s about to address him (then drag him somewhere safe and try to convince him to leave or at least use a mask and some sort of head covering) a cloaked figure appears between them. The mysterious man whispers to them, pauses for a few moments then turns to slip back into the crowds. Ayero hesitates. Had she heard him right? This man…wanted to help the slaves gathered here? It seemed far-fetched and suspicious and if it was true, highly dangerous. But then again…this already was dangerous and she didn’t exactly have a plan to follow through on should she encounter her brother.

Her hesitation is broken as Diego moves forward and she too, finds herself following the stranger. I’m only doing this to watch over him. She tells herself, though in reality she knows that the beast tamer can handle himself and that her curiosity had gotten to her.

Whoever walked into the house behind the mysterious man would be ushered into a room with three tables, holding various magical and scientific instruments. Jars and bottles also cluttered the tables, filled with different liquids. The sunlight poured through two open windows that illuminated the room. Along the back of the room held two shelves, stuffed full of books from floor to ceiling.

The Great Slave Auction Cloaked_by_doctahoptimus-d38d8jf

The man sat down on an empty corner of the table in the back, peering at the others from beneath the folds of his hood, his face hidden behind a white mask with an elongated nose. The man clapped his hands, drawing attention to him. He would look at those before him, calculating their potential to the plan. "You are all people that see the injustice displayed by those people out there. I have a plan to save those poor souls that are having their life determined by savages who believe a life can be bought or sold. I have gathered you here to help achieve that goal."

He pointed to a pile of several small satchels laying in the center of a table. Inside they would find some balls, small enough to fit a few in their hand at once. There was a mix of red and white balls within the satchels.

"We shall wait a few minutes to see if anyone else shall arrive before we proceed." He would refuse to answer any questions while they waited, simply listening if they talked amongst themselves.

The situation only became more bizarre as Ayero found herself following after the man into the house, strange objects scattered about on the tables. What on Earth…? But she persists, settling into the room among the others that had gathered here before her and Diego. She wonders how to approach the situation, was this man sincere in his words or was it simply a lure for individuals that may potentially cause trouble during this event? The man’s clapping gets her attention and she shifts her focus onto him, taking in his words.

She wasn’t particularly surprised by his announcement but she still felt some level of excitement over it. Not excitement in a good way but…certainly accomplishing this would be dangerous. No, attempting it would be dangerous. Her eyes narrow behind the mask, curious to know the identity of this mysterious man and just how well prepared he was for such a task. The satchels of balls on the table made even less sense to her as she couldn’t guess their purpose. Eyeing the strange man for several moments, she sighs to herself and lifts up the corner of her mask to peer down at the younger Fanalis to her side.

”Diego.” She says lowly, waiting to catch his attention. ”What on Earth were you doing in the middle of the world’s largest slave auction?” She growls, chiding him like a mother. ”Do you have any idea how dangerous this is? A young fanalis is prime merchandise to these people. You could have covered up your hair in the least.”

Diego's curiosity piqued as he walked in the room, staring in fascinated wonder at the objects in the room. He investigated the different contents, wondering their purpose as the cloaked man moved to the back of the room. Zanzibar squirmed around behind Diego on Trixie's back, eager to do something. With a gentle stroke of Diego's hand on its fur, Zanzibar calmed down.

The man clapped, drawing Diego's attention and proceeded to give a short passionate speech to the others in the room. Much of what he said was in line with what Diego felt, he too saw injustice in slavery and the belief of privilege to own another being. He approached the table with the satchels and picked a few of the balls up. He wondered at the different colors of the balls, but set them gently back in the sack as he heard a familiar voice whisper his name. He turned to see Ayero underneath the slightly raised mask.

She chided him for walking around a slave market without covering his face and he blushed, realizing for the first time that danger. "I didn't think about that at the time. I'll have to find one later. I'm here because what those people out there are doing is wrong." He kept his voice to a whisper, thinking there was a reason she had kept her tone low. "Wait, why are you here? You must think it's wrong too, right?"

"How barbaric." Altair muttered to himself. He was walking among the crowd with a mask he had just bought from a child. It was in the masquerade style, with a partial crown. Perfect for The Sovereign to have. He looked at the note that the child had handed him as well. It had a small message written on it, saying that if he wanted this event to end he should come to the place marked on the map. Altair stood outside the building for a short while, watching as two other figures went inside. The first person had their face hidden under a mask, but the second Altair immediately recognized as Diego. Interesting. So he wanted a part in this as well.

Altair entered the building after a few more moments. He entered to see a man in a robe giving a short speech about why they gathered here. Altair walked down the aisle and sat down on the opposite side of the row from Diego. He remained completely silent.

Dynatos followed closely behind the Fanalis duo and the hooded man. Luckily Dynatos himself wore a hood and had left Ares and Athena behind because they would have drawn unneeded attention. The group had ducked into a house and Dynatos followed closely behind. He slid into the house and listened to the mans words and saw various bags and a number of people there all in hoods or wearing masks. Looks like the rumours were true; it was then Dynatos saw the Fanalis that he had followed here. Considering what was going on one could only assume that he would have at least hidden himself; just to draw attention away from himself. They would love to be able to get their hands on him and turn a quick profit for free basically.

As the man waited, he was surprised to overhear the masked woman call the young Fanalis, Diego. He peered at the boy, realizing who he was, he hadn't expected to see him again. Behind his mask and cloak, it would be near impossible to notice the surprise and he quickly recovered. He turned his attention to the room and cleared his throat. "It seems that you four are the only ones with the courage to stand up to injustice. Not to worry, that will be plenty." He sat up, sweeping his cloak around him as he paced the room. "I appreciate you coming, despite what you may have thought seemed like a trap. The satchels on that table contain a mix of one-use magical tools. To use them, you only need to drop them on the ground. The red will provide a loud bang, while the white ones will cover a five meter area in smoke."

He paused, taking the time to answer any questions if there were any. After a cough, he continued, "You will need to be in pairs for the mission. Seeing as there are countless stages with slaves held all over most of the city, you will be spreading these balls around the different stages and holding cells. I have reports that some of the slaves are staying in the houses around here as well. It would be wise to drop the red balls near the walls of the houses, making sure not to be noticed, of course. The balls will go off with a signal, when they go off, it will be up to you to free as many slaves as you can. The city will be in a massive panic, use that to your advantage.

"Meanwhile, I have plans to distract the bulk of the guards, to slow their response time. You will have to handle the guards protecting the holding cells, but I will do my best to prevent reinforcements." He paused, seeming to consider something, "I will warn you, however, not all the slaves may make it out. It will be dangerous, but I assure you, those poor souls will not get another chance."

He looked between those gathered in front of him, "If any of you don't have the courage after what I have said, speak now."

She studies the boy silently for a few moments, instinctively wanting to scold him. You shouldn’t be here. This is too dangerous. She was aware of how clever and capable the young Fanalis was but…hell, this was just as dangerous for her, for any of them in this room. ”I’m looking for someone.” She answers simply, letting a thoughtful silence fall between them before pulling the corner of the mask back down to cover her face, turning away from the boy to face the man who had brought them here. ”Any civilized person would.” She mumbles, low enough for him to hear in response to the second part of his question. She gazes around the room beneath the mask, her eyes landing on the two others who had joined them, both having hidden their faces.

She takes in the man’s words, her suspicions not quelled but the idea that she might be able to see her brother and what’s more, free him keeps her there. ”And where will we route the freed slaves to once they escape?” She speaks up, running the plan over in her head. She and Diego could break normal chains with no problem thanks to their enhanced strength, but the bindings used on Fanalis would be particularly difficult to break. They’d have to scope out the stages and holding cells. Neverthless she remains silent, watching the other two participants.

Altair thought through the plan. the basis was simple. Create havoc, and allow the slaves to get away during the confusion. The hard part however would be keeping the guards occupied while the others helped the slaves escape. They would also need someone to blame when this whole thing was over. Altair thought about it for a moment. This would be a great way to get The Sovereign on the global map. First a big score in Balbadd with the hit on that aristocrat, and now a sabotaging the largest scale slave auction this side of the world. If The Sovereign were responsible for that, he would become a household name, not just an urban legend. It would be incredibly risky for Altair. He would need to plan his actions perfectly, and not leave anything to chance. But he was confident he could do it.

"If you need someone to distract the guards while the others help funnel the slaves through the escape route, then i will help you do that as The Sovereign. I can keep them distracted long enough for everyone to get away. However, i will be doing so in a way that indicates myself as the sole conductor of this operation. And as i assume no one else wants to get caught, then i assume you all have no problem with this. I need this operation in order to get the name of The Sovereign on the map as a global icon for Slave Freedom. My work in Balbadd has already started this. With your help, i can start this revolution." Altair remained seated throughout his speech. He didn't look up from the table, nor did he make any move for the items in the bag. He would wait to hear the responses of the others.

His eyes had closed and it was obvious he wasn't paying full attention to what was going on, but when he heard that some of the slaves might not make it out his eyes snapped open. The look they had in the was of pure shock. Dynatos would die before he let anyone of the slaves he was helping escape die. The air around Dynatos had become even more serious than what it was before. Meanwhile, Ares wandered around outside looking for Dynatos. He had gotten a bad feeling, so he disobeyed the command of Dynatos. Dynatos could feel the other participants looking at him, but he did not care what the plan was as long as the ultimate goal was accomplished.

Diego wondered if Ayero knew someone that was being sold, but before he could ask, the cloaked man began speaking. He had a strange feeling that he recognized the man's voice, but shrugged it off. It was probably someone he had heard in passing. The man explained the plan, which seemed simple enough. Getting out of the situation would be problematic, but that would be something they would have to figure out afterwards. He nodded at Ayero's question, wondering where they would lead the slaves to.

One of the other people, in a masquerade mask, spoke up asking to be a distraction for them. Diego swore he recognized that man's voice as well. It surprised him that so many familiar people were all passionate to fight to free the slaves and it brought a smile to his face. He liked the idea of a revolution to free the slaves, hoping to catch the man again to ask more about this Sovereign. The other man in the room said nothing, seeming to be lost in his thoughts. It seemed no one had objections to the plan and he waited for the cloaked man to continue.

The cloaked man would sigh before answering Ayero's question, "Unfortunately, that will have to be determined during the mission. It will be up to you four to free them and secure their safety." With her question answered he would then turn to Altair, listening intently to his speech. "After the magical tools are in place and the signal has been given, if you'd like to make a scene to distract the guards further, so be it." He waved at finger in Altair's direction, "Realize that while you are distracting guards, there will be one less person freeing slaves from their bonds." The mysterious man waved his hand, dismissing the thought, "Who knows, maybe your distraction will buy the rest more time. Now, pick your partners, split up, and lay those balls in good locations. I will begin my part in the plan."

With that, the cloaked man bowed, before leaving the house to the four people gathered. After the groups were decided and the satchels were taken, it was time for their role.

Unfastening her cloak, she secures the bag over her shoulder before throwing the black cloth over her body again. Stopping at the door, she tilts her masked face back remaining two. ”Good luck to you both. Be safe.”

She nearly feels sick to her stomach as she and Diego peruse the stages under the guise of interested buyers, stealthy dropping the small red and white balls as they went. She tried not to look at the faces of the dejected slaves as they neared the cages in order to “inspect” them better, planting several of the balls in strategic locations where they’d be difficult to see with a passing glance. The whole atmosphere was surreal, she’d never been to a slave market that was so...celebratory. In the back of her head, she wonders about the man who had offered to distract the guards and the other one who had remained silent. Perhaps, they too had something to accomplish here today (if the other masked man’s speech was anything to go by). ”Do you think this will work?” She mutters lowly so that only the Fanalis at her side could hear.

I'll need a bit of time to set up my distraction, and i can't do it when there's a job needing to be done." Altair went to wait by the door. He readjusted his mask and took a look at where he was. Even from here, he could see the multitude of slaves and their owners all shuffling about, some making trades, others lining up purchases. Altair suppressed a look of disgust. Soon they would have their chance. Soon, they could be free. Once his partner was ready they began to place the bombs in their respective locations.

He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed, "I don't know, but it will sure cause a panic. That much will work at least." He paused, thinking of the man who had wanted to distract the guards, "What do you think of the Sovereign?"

Seeing people degrade other people struck a nerve in Diego, the sight was painful to see. Children in chains, women displayed and handled in lewd ways, the look in the bidder's eyes. Lance sat on a roof quietly as he followed a cloaked man. This man seemed suspicious to him so he jumped from roof to roof so he could keep up with the man. Lance's wore different attire than usual today as he wore a black cloak with the hood on just in case he would have to hide in the shadows. He followed the man for a while until they reached a slave auction of some kind. This peaked Lance's interest enough for him to notice the man walking into a building with some other people.

Lance slipped into the building unnoticed and hid crouching in the corner of the room. He listened to the mans plan and smirked "Explosives it sounds like... this may cause a commotion that I would be happy to watch and maybe help out with..." he said with a grin as he listened to the rest of the mans plan and only got up once everyone was gone. After they were gone however Lance noticed there was still a satchel left so he took this opportunity to go over and get one and put it inside his cloak so that he wouldn't be noticeable. It was daylight out side and there wasn't really anywhere to hide so he was already pretty noticeable when walking around so he fled to the roof tops again to get a better view of the situation at hand. Lance hopped from building to building until he was seated on top of a building next to were the auction was taking place.

Ayero & Diego

As the pair moved through the slave auction and placed their share of magic tools, there would be little in their way for most of the ordeal. Each explosive orb they placed would be another objective completed until both had only a single sphere remaining. But few opportunities to place them would arrive until at last, the perfect spot revealed itself. Behind the crowd of pigs in human clothing whom bid upon their fellow people, there was a rather large cage filled with animals. If one of the bombs were to destroy the lock on the cage, then a large number of creatures would be released into the crowd causing far more chaos than a mere lone explosion or burst of noise could ever offer.

The cage had nothing to do with the auction and actually belonged to a local farmer whose fields had been confiscated for the festival. There was a need to store his livestock and there was no where else do do so. Inside the cage of interwoven wire would be a large flock of 36 chickens. These animals were the pride of their master as a dozen of them had grown to at least twice the size of normal chickens, the largest of which was almost a meter tall! Unleashing these fowls upon the auction goers was probably the best course of action Ayero and Diego could take, however the cage was being guarded by a solitary guard. They would need to deal with him before they could get a chance to rig the magic tool to destroy the cage door.

Altair & Dynatos

Things would go a bit less smoothly for the "Sovereign" and his Fanalis ally as they began to move throughout the city. Dynatos stood out from the crowd like a sore thumb thanks to his black hooded cloak. A mask would have been more efficient, but by the time either of the men could think of this it would already have been too late. The first couple of drops went without incident, but the duo would not even be half way finished depositing the magic tools when a guard who found their movements suspicious decided to single the men out.

"Hey! You in the black and your friend too. Hold it right there..."

There was caution in the guard's voice as he glared at the two men. The guard had noticed them due to Dynatos' black hood. However it was the way they were moving around that had truly caught his suspicions. "I've seen both of you stop near every auction going on down this street. But you haven't stayed around long enough to even check out the merchandise...Something about you isn't right..." The guard had chosen to engage the two men at an intersection where a number of other guards down each street would be able to see them should any trouble arise. But so far he was not making any aggressive movements with his spear or the sword at his waist. It was still possible to forgo a battle with smooth words and quick thinking. Should Altair and Dynatos be caught now, it would cause trouble for the others who were surely not yet finished placing the magic tools. If the plan were enacted too early, they could be caught in the explosions of the orbs each group carried. An escape through non-violent means would be ideal.

Lance

There was not much happening for the rooftop running man. His decision to remain hidden from potential allies left him with no partner and no real role within the plan. The magic tool he held carried the danger of going off any minute as there was no telling when the signal to begin would actually occur. But aside from this threat, few guards were actually searching the rooftops for trouble. Lance would go unmolested for now until he left the rooftops or did something to attract attention.

((Sorry Lance, you didn't give much to go off of and didn't really do much that would garner a response just yet.))

Altair immediately ran up to the guard, putting a hand over his mouth, and bringing his other hand to his lips in a shushing gesture. "SSSHHH, don't you know who this is?" He said with a sense of urgency. He had been thinking of ways to get out of just this kind of situation, but hadn't had a chance to explain it to his partner just yet. He hoped he would catch on quickly. He removed his hand from the guards mouth and continued loud enough for Dynatos to hear, but quiet enough that he would not cause too much of a scene. "This is a young lord of Zou, here as an invited guest of the Pharaoh himself. I am his retainer, Talim. And it would do you well to show some respect! Do you honestly think that the young lord has the time to stop by every shop along the way, and waste his own valuable time looking at sub-par slaves? Of course not! You are looking at a man who knows exactly what he wants. When he doesn't see it, he moves on. Now, are we going to have a problem? I would hope you would be smarter than to cause an international incident." Altair then turned on his heel, and walked back towards Dynatos. "Come my lord, the next stall is this way. Perhaps we will find what we are looking for there."
