Bringing Along:

Azix would find Garret waiting for him in the room they had spoken in the other day. Garret was standing, looking out the window with his back to Azix. "It's time to test your mettle. We have work to do, and the portfolio is on the desk."

Unclasping his hands, Garret turned to Azix "As you will note in the portfolio, our target for this mission is one of the Fanalis Corps members. You may be familiar with their strengths, but if not it is all documented in the portfolio. The target's name is Manius Decimus. We are to remove him from the Reim Empire's board, permanently."

Garret paced from one side of the room to the next. "It is important to note that should he get to you in close combat, you would likely be quickly dispatched. Therefore it would be best if we come at this from a different angle. The head on approach is no good."

Garret stopped pacing and looked at Azix. "You will also see that there is no request for how we take him out, but I believe it is obvious that discretion is our way of working. Simply killing the man in broad daylight would not do. So here is the plan; one of us will follow the man, learn his habits and gather more information. Information the portfolio is strangely lacking." Garret was sure he had an idea why the information was lacking. Just another thing he had to add to the list of annoyances he was going to have to deal with from now on.

"Meanwhile, another one of us will move about the city, a bit more freely and without the danger of being 'burned', caught that is, while noting guard patrols and movements. We will then meet back here after two or three days, and determine the best course of action with the information we have learned. Any questions?"

Azix grabbed the portfolio and looked through its contents, noting that the report lacked any real meat to it. He contemplated the challenges each of the jobs provided and he felt that he would be better suited if he tested the guards. They would need to know things like patrol size, patrol paths, when the guards switched, as well as the response time in different areas. He made a note to study the maps of Reim as well. He realized that the report mentioned nothing about Manius' movements and wondered if that was intentional. He would have to wait for Garret to report on Manius' movements and Azix briefly wondered if Garret was setting him up. He would deal with that when it happened, for now he had a mission to do.

"I think I'd prefer to track the guard's movements." He raised his eyebrow, "For an espionage mission, this lacks any real substance." He set the file back down on the table after he committed the details inside his head to memory. "I can only imagine two scenarios, either you expect me to die during this mission or your organization is shoddy and Zou's resources are being poorly wasted. I would hazard a guess that it is the latter, though." He looked straight at Garret with a neutral expression, "That leaves a very important question, are they throwing you away with me, do they have that much faith in your abilities, or are you ordered to see to it that I fall as a scapegoat for an attempt on this man's life?" The expression melted into a smirk, "Either way, I intend to perform this mission with the best of my abilities." If Garret had nothing said something, he'd listen and then leave to get started, if not, he would still leave.

Garret snorted at the comments made by Azix. "If there were orders to kill you, you'd already be dead with a knife in your back. No, it's obvious someone wants you dead, and they've got the pull and the nerve to muck up my operations in hopes that it's enough to cause it." Garret shook his head and looked up to Azix. "You're a real piece of work, you know that? A new member with political baggage attached. We'll work through it, though, and it will look all the better." Garret smiled at that thought. He knew he received a quick promotion due to his backer, the Spymaster in Zou. There were some who questioned that decision, based on his background.

But Garret wouldn't let that get to him. "Good choice, on the guards. I would suggest checking the marketplace and the residential areas, then branching out to where you believe he might pass through. I'll periodically drop off information on where he has been, in this safe house, so feel free to pass by and look at what I leave."

Garret left shortly after Azix, so as not to be seen together. He moved about in a relaxed pedestrian manner, making his way to places he would believe Manius to show up for work. He spent the better part of the afternoon walking back and forth between the marketplace, the restaurants and the streets nearby the Fanalis Corps' headquarters. Unfortunately, so as not to be seen, Garret only looked at the headquarters from afar.

The afternoon passed, and it was getting close to evening when, as luck would have it, Garret caught a glimpse of that red hair. There was a Fanalis on the opposite side of the street. But was it his mark? Having no other leads, Garret crossed the street ten or so meters behind the Fanalis and began following him. He had just come from the area that had restaurants in it, and was moving on his way back to the safe house to leave a report on not having found anything. Which was strange; what was the Fanalis doing in the residential area?

Garret kept his distance, with a decent sized crowd between him and the Fanalis. The Fanalis entered a building and... What is this? Somebody entered with him. He only caught a glimpse of long brown hair. A woman? Garret passed by the restaurant, walking a bit further down before turning around and walking back. He didn't want to enter in right after they had.

When he went into the restaurant, it was moderately busy. The end of the day was nearing, and it was time for dinner. Garret sat down at a nearby table, close to the Fanalis and cast a sidelong glance at him. A smile spread on his face. That's our man. He thought to himself, ordering a stew from the waiter. "It's been a long day, and I could definitely use something to eat."

As he waited, Garret listened intently to their conversation.

"-aby sometime soon?" The woman; she was fairly plain looking, but she seemed to have a very caring sounding voice.

Manius smiled, laughing. "That can wait, we aren't even married yet."

Ah, they're lovers. Garret tapped his fingers on the table and drank from his water. This opens up some different possibilities.

The woman continued to talk, and their affection for each other was obviously deep. Their dinner was served and, shortly after, so too was Garret's. The woman said something to the effects of 'When are we to be wed?' when Manius hushed her and said "Come on, let's eat. And besides, there's something I want to talk to you about this Sunday."

That leaves four days until Sunday... Garret finished his meal quickly, sad he wasn't able to enjoy it longer. Paying his bill, he walked outside and waited at a nearby stall that was selling food speared on a stick. That, too, was quite delicious. When Manius and the woman left, he shadowed them. It looked like Manius was escorting his lady friend back home.

When he was done, Manius left and went to his own home. He must have requested the day off, which was why Garret hadn't seen him at all near the Fanalis Corps' headquarters.

Humming a tune, Garret was satisfied with what he found. He left a note on the location of the restaurant, Manius' house and the woman's house in the safe house, leaving again and sleeping in an Inn to keep him from being seen with Azix.

Azix had left the house, his mind churning with a list of things to do. He had three days to analyze the city guard's movements and capabilities. It was a large city, but he got straight to work. He didn't want to rely on just his magical talents so the first thing he did was head to the poor area of town. On the way, he grabbed some clothes hanging out to dry and found a puddle of mud. He soaked them in the dirty water and then ringed them out. In some bushes he changed his clothes, that were bought previously that fit in with the local fashion. He also had made sure to grab an eye patch to hide his left eye. He made sure to cover himself in dirt and even wiped soot into his teeth. The taste was disgusting, but the guise would prove useful. He mussed up his hair, hunched his back and proceeded out onto the street.

He wandered around, keeping to alleys and shaded areas, acting like a beggar, while watching what few patrols there were. He noticed some dirty kids, barely eight years old, playing with a ball across the road. They all looked emaciated and the idea that people would let children starve infuriated him. He left his vantage point and approached the kids.

When they noticed him, they looked at him cautiously. Dirty beggars had harassed them before and Azix thought they were ready to bolt. He checked to make sure no one but the boys were looking and he pulled his staff out from under his robes, sending magoi around his body to form an illusion and make him appear finely dressed with a friendly demeanor. He also stood up straight and lost the limp he had been walking with to appear frail. The boy's eyes lit up in wonder as they watched Azix transform in front of them. He smiled and crouched down in front of them. “You boys look like you are starving.” when they nodded meekly, he reached into the rags, careful not to warp the illusion and pulled out some gold coins from the sack he tied to his thigh. He gave them each a gold coin and then gave them a sad look, he used magoi to make it look as if tears were in his eyes. “I can't bear to see children like you go hungry.”

The boys looked like they had never seen that much money before in their life, “Thank you mister.”

“Call me Xeno,” he whispered to them. He looked around and checked that no one else was within ear shot. “If you'd be interested, I do have a way for you to get more money.” He made sure they were listening before he continued. “I have a job for you, whether or not you accept, you can keep the money I just gave you. I'll give you each two coins for the next three days if you help me. No one else can know what I tell you.” He said the last part with a serious look on his face and when they all nodded that they understood he smiled. “Good, I need eyes around this town. If you prove your worth, I will have more jobs like these for you guys in the future. You may be able to dress as fine as me if you work hard. I will give you each a section of the city to watch. I want you to pay attention and tell me where the guards go, when they move and how many. Do you understand?”

They nodded eagerly and he proceeded to give them all different sections to watch. They agreed to meet him at dawn in an alley nearby every day and he explained how to move unseen and explained that the dirtier they looked, the more they'd be prone to be ignored when they wandered the nicer areas of town. He left the rich areas for himself, not trusting his theory on the upperclass snobs, who would probably have the guards kill a child just for staining the presence of their streets. He planned to go over their areas as well, not taking anything to chance. He couldn't know how well they'd pay attention or if they'd be shoo'd off the street.

With that done, he released his illusion and transformed back into the dirty old beggar with a hunch and a bad limp in his right leg. The children seemed amaze at Azix's ability and he thought that maybe it would impress them enough to do a good job. He made his way through the rest of the poor area, noting key points that the guards traveled. In the poor area, it seemed the guards frequented the main roads in pairs every couple hours and they'd hurry through. He watched them ignore the people's complaints about the conditions and noted that as well.

Before he finished up, he came across a man selling fruits on a road with a few pedestrians. The last thing he had to check here was the guards response times. He prepared himself for a quick run and then wandered over to the man's cart. The man gave a disgusted look at Azix's garb and started to shoo him away. Azix darted forward, snatching some fruit from the cart and ran into an alley. The man shouted after him, but lost him in the maze of back alleys. He heard people shout for guards and he made his way back to the road, keeping to the shadows where he could see the man. After fifteen minutes, guards came up and questioned the man. They spoke briefly before shrugging and walking off.

It was evening by the time he got to the middle-class part of town. He had changed back into his clothes and had found a creek to wash off in behind some buildings. He felt filthy but still had work to do. He wandered around, checking patrols and even spotted one of the children doing the same. The boy didn't recognize him as Azix walked by and seemed to have two piles of rocks. Whenever he saw guards walking by, he'd scoot a rock from one pile to the next.

It was late at night by the time he rented a room at an inn and was exhausted. He had learned that the patrols in the middle-class areas moved in fours and made frequent patrols every half-hour. He had nearly gotten caught trying a similar trick to test out the response time. Thankfully, he had been able to hide in a barrel before they came around a corner and found him. It had taken the guards two minutes to arrive this time and the guards had gotten a party to search the area. Azix had had to slip into a clothing store and change his attire as well as change his face, in case they had gotten a good description.

In the morning the boys reported back to him, he had assumed his beggars disguise and paid them their due gold. They gave him surprisingly detailed information, and the child he had seen with the pile of rocks had counted accurately. While he didn't tell him times of the patrol, he had enough rocks that the math was correct. He gave them all a tip to check the position of the sun and the activities of people around them to gauge the time better. If people were going to eat in groups, then it was likely that it was near a meal time and by the position of the sun they'd gather what time it was.

He spent that morning making sure that the patrols hadn't changed based on day and notated any changes in paths in the middle and lower class sections. He then made his way to the rich part of town after cleaning up and getting better clothes. Mansions and elaborate buildings lined the streets with groups of guards everywhere. At minimum, five guards were stationed at nearly every crossroad. The guards changed their positions every few hours. Azix had caused a commotion and then ran for his life into a series of back alleys that seemed a maze. When he had a second, he changed his appearance and hair color, narrowly avoiding a dangerous scene. It had only taken less than a minute for an army of guards to descend upon the area and thoroughly search it.

The next morning he met the kids and they provided him with new details about their areas. He had made sure to check on them in between his patrols and found them diligent at their jobs. He paid them extra and told them he would find them again if he had a job. Thankful the dirty work was over, he headed to rendezvous with Garret, probably still smelling funny.

Garret and a red-haired woman were waiting for Azix when he came into the Safe House. Garret introduced the woman. "This is Carmen, she'll be helping out in this one way or another." It was at this point that he began fleshing out the details of their plan. "So, this is how we are going to approach it." Garret said, a huge grin on his face. "The man has a lover. They're soon to be married, actually. The first phase of our mission will be two-fold. One: A present member is to convince the woman to follow them to a certain restaurant via back roads. This location," Garret pointed on the map to a spot away from the Fanalis Corps' headquarters. "was chosen due to it's position in relation to the headquarters, as well as the fact that guards are relatively lax here at noon; most are closer to the marketplace or patrolling the governmental buildings and upper class residential areas." Garret nodded to Azix, acknowledging his part in gathering the information necessary to make the judgement call.

"The second part to this is that another member, either Carmen or, depending on your abilities, yourself, will have to determine who will be the one to lead Manius into the restaurant. The goal here is for the woman to see Manius enter the restaurant, hopefully arms linked if you can create such a moment, with another woman who has red hair." Garret thought the deception brilliant, and continued.

"With this, the individual escorting the woman will convince her that an admirer of hers had seen Manius with the woman several times over the past few weeks, and has even proposed to marry her on Monday.

It is imperative that the one who takes Manius into the restaurant inform him of this slaver group, whom I have already arranged something with. They were chosen due to how far away they are from the woman's house. When he arrives he will be met with a messenger who will tell him, wait for it, that his fiancee has been kidnapped, and is being transported to a hideout, outside of the city! The message has already been written, and has a warning for him to not make any stops on the way to a warehouse within the city if he wants to see his fiancee alive.

This is where the third member comes in. He needs to watch Manius and make sure Manius doesn't go for help. The letter is a ransom note, so hopefully the provocation will be enough to convince him to come alone." Garret was nearly finished explaining the details he had fleshed out on the second day, and set up on the evening of that very day.

"Now, we need to make sure they don't meet between her seeing Manius and Manius entering the restaurant. We want her to discuss this issue with at least one other person, preferably her friend that she lives with. We will then await for her to leave her house, or her friend to leave the house, before the individual who led her in the first place kidnaps her.

By the time Manius reaches his destination, the stage will have been set. Choose your roles between yourselves, and I will fill whatever is leftover." The plan was a bit convoluted, but if everything went well, they would find themselves face-to-face with a very, very upset Fanalis and a motivation for the woman to kill her fiancee.

Without a chance to bathe and relax, Garret introduced Azix to a red-haired woman named Carmen. At first glance he thought she was a Fanalis, but after a closer inspection, he realized it was a clever guise. As a fan of disguises, Azix was impressed at her talent. Seeing that Garret was ready to start briefing them on the plan, he found a chair and sat down, paying close attention.

The plan was complicated and it seemed to take a few factors to chance, but overall it was well thought-out and if executed properly, the effects would be the talk of Reim for the next year. Azix was impressed with Garret's strategy, especially considering the lack of information they had started with. Out of the three jobs, Azix had agreed to deal with Manius' fiance, thinking that suited his strong points the best. After the briefing, he had discussed some finer details with Garret before retiring for a quick bath.

----

Half an hour later, Azix made his way to the slums of Reim and found the shack he had rented behind a small tavern. He hadn't revealed to the owner his real appearance, rather using the old man guise he wore now. The street rats he had hired before were guarding the entrance from clever vantage points he had mentioned to them before, to not look suspicious. They followed him in, eager for more work. He grabbed a map from a small table before taking a seat, beckoning them to follow suit. The young boys looked up at him, anxious to learn as he studied the map, marking an area.

When he was done, he passed the map to them, "Do you know where that is?" It was a test to see if any of them could understand maps.

One boy by the name of Lavius nodded, "That is by the Colosseum. There are some shops and restaurants on that street, mister." He beamed when Azix nodded.

"That is correct." He took a moment to pause and look like he was deep in thought, "You know, I think you deserve a promotion." He watched Lavius' eyes light up, "You are now Captain of this unit we have here." He pointed back at the map with a serious look, "Now, this is a very important job. Failure won't be an option." He took a few seconds to make sure they understood before continuing, "Upon success of the mission, you will be rewarded five gold coins each this time." He pulled out a sack and gave them each a couple coins, "This is not payment, this is for new clothes, specifically for this mission. You each will go to different clothing shops and purchase new outfits and then wash up. You will have to do this quick, we don't have much time. You will need to look nice so as not to attract attention." He pointed to an area nearby the area he marked on the map, "This is where we'll meet. Do not be late."

After the boys took off to fulfill his orders, Azix left, heading for a clothing shop to find suitable attire. When he removed his eye-patch, he used his light magic to change his eye color to blue to hide his left eye. He picked clothes to make him appear a wealthy merchant and took off to meet the boys.

Azix smiled when he saw that they were all there and had picked out appropriate clothes, they had listened attentively. "Well, don't you look sharp." he said with a friendly smile, to let them know who he was. They weren't surprised to see Azix looking different, they had seen that trick before. He looked around and spotted Manius' fiance walking down a nearby street. She seemed to have a skip in her step and a wide smile. Azix smiled inwardly, her happiness would soon be tarnished. Reaching into a pocket, he pulled out a packet of liquid that had a similar texture to blood. "Lavius, choose two others and put this all over your clothes."

The boys seemed confused but did as he asked without hesitation. As they applied the fake blood, he gave them pointers on how to apply it for the best effect. When he thought they looked like they could make a mother faint in fear, he nodded his approval. He asked Lavius and the two others to step forward. With a quick movement, he landed a quick blow with his staff to their faces, knocking them on the ground. They looked up in shock with tears welling in their eyes. Azix smiled, "I'm sorry. That was necessary, you need to be crying for this next part." He pointed out Manius' fiance on the street and whispered in their ears. They nodded and ran off towards her. He asked the others to hide and wait for the next phase after explaining their job.

Lavius ran towards the lady, loudly crying. He thought of the abuse his father gave him in drunken rages late at night, so the tears seemed real. Collapsing in front of the lady, he clutched her skirts, "Mi-Miss! We-we were playing with M-m-manius and he got, he got HURT!!" He let out a big sob at the last part. Between the blood-stained clothing and the boy's tears, it appeared to have the intended effect. Her face went ashen as her eyes went between the boys.

"What are you waiting her for?! Where is he?!" She followed them as they ran towards the restaurant.

Azix lay in wait, from the west he saw Manius wandering up with his arm wrapped around Carmen. Azix noted her success ensnaring the target and planned to compliment her later. He turned his head and saw Lavius running up from the east with the fiance close behind, heading towards Manius. Now it was his turn, he started moving towards the fiance waiting to see the spark of recognition in her face. With a stream of magoi, the illusion around his face shifted so it appeared tears ran down his face. When the fiance stopped in her tracks with a wild look in her eyes, Azix took a quick glance back to see Carmen and Manius getting close to the restaurant. Azix moved forward and bumped into the fiance, knocking her on the ground while he let out a sob.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry." He sniffled and offered her a hand, while taking a quick glance back. The bump was successful in preventing her from seeing Manius lead Carmen into the restaurant. She leaped up, ignoring his hand and scanned the street. When she didn't see Manius in the crowd, she broke down in tears and looked at Azix, surprised to see him crying.

"I can't believe this, we were supposed to be married..." she paused before looking back at Azix, "I'm sorry I bumped into you, I just had seen my fiance with another woman."

Azix choked back a sob, "A woman? Was she a Fanalis?" he asked, his voice cracking up, like he was about to break down.

She nodded with a surprised look on her face, "Yes, how did you know?"

He put his face in his hand, to prevent her from seeing the smirk on his face. She was falling hook, line and sinker for it. When he regained his composure, he played it off like he was trying to not break down in tears, "Was she with Manius" he implored her, hoping it wasn't true. When she nodded, he let out a sobbing sigh, "I'm sorry dear, he seems a horrible man. His arm was around my fiance. I heard they've been seeing each other for months and were to get married this Monday. She told me.." his voice broke and more tears streamed down his face before finishing the trap, "That I wasn't Fanalis enough for her." He broke down collapsing onto the street in loud sobs.

Manius' fiance wrapped her arms around him, trying to comfort him as she cried too. They sat like that for a few minutes before she stood up, "I'm sorry, I need to go home. Thank you for telling me the truth." She noticed eyes on her tear-stained face and with an embarrassed look, stormed off down the street, back the way she had came.

Azix made a scene of wiping his eyes and composing himself as he stole a glance to the bushes where the last two boys were hiding. As the fiance passed their spot, they quickly shadowed her without drawing attention to it. Azix made a mental note to tip the boys extra for being so efficient at their jobs. He kept them in sight as he followed behind.

The fiance was inside her friend's house, Azix and the boys were spread out in the alleys around it watching for movement. The job so far had gone smoothly, the fiance hadn't ran into Manius and she was now most likely pouring her feelings out. He looked at the merchant's wagon near the house, that the boys had found abandoned in a nearby alley. The next step was to discreetly kidnap her and bring her to the warehouse. Lavius let out a whistle from across the street, signaling that it looked like she would be leaving soon.

Azix walked across the street and hid behind the wagon, waiting for the fiance. He heard the front door open and her friend wish her luck. He waited for the door to close and her footsteps to get closer. He walked around the wagon and waved at the fiance, while pulling out his staff from within his cloak. "Light Vision", he whispered, lenses formed around his eyes, preparing to filter out the light for his next spell. "Flicker~," magoi streamed from his staff and formed a small sphere of bright light in front of her, blinding her. Taking the advantage and making sure no one else was around, he grabbed her and threw her in the wagon. The boys ran from their vantage point and punched her, knocking her out, before throwing the cloth tarp over themselves and the lady. Azix put his staff back in his cloak and started pulling the cart down the street. Thankfully, no one had been around to see and he made his way to the warehouse for the last part of the job, taking back streets to avoid attention.

Garret spoke briefly on the details with Azix for the part of the mission he had chosen, impressed with the man's choice of actions. It's true, when he outlined the mission it was a very quick plan that he had come up with on the spot, and had to commend Azix for personalizing his part of the mission. The method was important, but only insofar as how the results are perceived. At least, for this mission that was how it was.

That left Carmen with the job of making Manius look like he was cheating. The woman was great at disguises, and was able to almost flirt without the other even realizing it. How she managed seemed like magic to Garret, but he didn't bother thinking into it too much.

He was left with a dangerous job; to tail an enraged Fanalis and ensure that he did not inform any guards. The most difficult part of all that would be keeping up with the Fanalis once he started running. To keep matters simpler for him, Garret had set up his vantage point at the fastest crossroads that the Fanalis would be able to take in order to inform the guards and in order to get to the warehouse in time.

Garret waited and waited until the Fanalis began running by. He cringed as the man started running towards the guard's barracks, then steeled his voice. "MANIUS! I wouldn't do that." The Fanalis stopped dead in his tracks and turned towards Garret. A feral smirk was on his face.

The Fanalis charged towards Garret's spot in an alley and cornered him against the wall, slamming a fist into it and snarled "What's keeping me from killing you right here, child."

The threat was real, and Garret did his beast to condition his heart beat to not move faster. "My boss has men stationed, just like myself, watching where you go." Garret lied to Manius. While he would have liked that, he hadn't had time to set up a group of people to be on the lookout. But was Manius going to risk it? Garret was sure he wasn't. "They already know I approached you. If I don't show up with you, then they'll kill your fiancee. Kill me, if you choose, but do so knowing that you will have sentenced her to death." Garret paused, staring at the Fanalis.

Manius gritted his teeth and backed away from Garret. "Get a move on before I change my mind." He growled the last words out, about ready to lose it at any moment.

Garret quickly led the Fanalis to the abandoned warehouse. When he opened the door Azix was there with the Fanalis' fiancee. The Fanalis moved quickly, grasping Garret by the throat and lifting him off of his feet but without the intent to harm him. Manius, too, now had a hostage. "Release her or I kill him." The Fanalis threatened.

Panic nearly took root in Garret's mind, as an instinctive need to remove the Fanalis' hand attempted to seize Garret's actions. Garret was a conditioned spy, he fought back his body's initial reaction and instead allowed his wand to slide down to his hand, which he had behind his back. Several barrels of water that were set up in the warehouse burst open as a bubble of water formed around the two due to Garret's Water Manipulation Technique.

The Fanalis narrowed his eyes and began to squeeze on Garret's throat in order to choke him, but Garret's Borg activated. While not seeming to have cast anything immediately, Azix would be able to see a change; some sort of film of Magoi covered Garret. He had cast Ice Phase in preparation as the Fanalis overpowered and shattered his Borg with his grip. Garret simultaneously cast State Transmutation, which turned the ball of water Manius and himself were floating in, into a ball of ice filled with water.

The hand that was crushing Garret's throat was still painfully grasping. Garret cast Pressure Control which constricted the Fanalis and placed a strong strain on his body. At this point, the Fanalis released Garret, who kicked off of the man's chest and simply phased through the ice wall and into the warehouse. Garret fought back the need to gasp, concentrating on the Fanalis and cast another spell: Jet Stream. The tip of his wand rested upon the ice sphere and Garret narrowed his eyes. Using the water inside of the ball, Garret made an almost invisible attack that was only apparent due to the large amount of bubbles the sudden change in the water's movement made. A cut, an inch wide, appeared near the man's heart and dug deep as four beams of water simultaneously struck the same spot. Garret could no longer hold back his coughing, and began throwing up bile and water. "Not... Finished." He gasped, but was fighting for air. The fiancee struggled against her restraints to no avail.

The Fanalis was struggling within the ice, but was about ready to pound on it and break free. It was up to Azix to finish the job.

Azix stopped the cart and let the boys out. He gave a side-long glace at Lavius and grinned, "Lavius, you should give your team a name."

The boy thought for a moment and looked at the others. "How about the Grumptoes?"

Azix raised an eyebrow, "Grumptoes?" He chuckled, "What's a Grumptoe?"

The boy smirked, "You know, scrumples." The boys laughed at the joke and Lavius snorted, "It's what they call kids that stay out late in the slums. 'If you walk around those muddy streets all night, your feet with smell like grumptoes!' My nan says that all the time."

Azix chuckled, "The Grumptoes squad you are hereby named. Meet me tonight and I'll pay you then."

Lavius nodded, "Ok." He looked to the back of the cart, where the fiance was hidden beneath the tarp. "What are you going to do with her?"

Within a heartbeat, Azix had his hand on his staff and his appearance started to change. His eyes shifted to black orbs, black flames danced in fury, as he looked down upon the boy like a furious God looks down upon an ant. "Don't push your luck." Just as quick, his appearance shifted back, his blue eyes gazing in adoration at a younger brother. "Be safe and remember, tonight!" He called as he took off, pushing the cart along down the street.

The fiance was unconscious, bound in a chair in front of him. Azix stood behind her with a firm grip on his staff as the door opened. He briefly wished the woman were conscious to rip at the man's heart more, but it seemed the Grumptoes had done a number on her. Garret stepped inside with the Fanalis and before Azix could blink, the scene had shifted.

Manius grabbed Garret by the throat in a death grip and Azix noted a small tremor of fear in his superior's body. It was brief, Garret quickly recovered his composure, but Azix spent a great deal of time being observant. It helped in the Zou court, even saved your life if you were lucky. Without batting an eye, Garret flicked his wand and barrels burst open, forming around the Fanalis and himself.

The Fanalis kept his grip on Garret's throat and Azix's blood started to simmer. While Azix and Garret weren't close, Azix had taken a keen interest in his superior officer's safety. Garret possessed what he considered a sharp mind for strategy and magic, but performed with an admirable efficiency. He was the closest thing to an ally Azix had and no one touched his team. Not without paying dearly for it. He kept an eye for the perfect timing and watched as Garret release his borg.

The Fanalis' muscles tensed as he gripped tighter around Garret's throat and shattered his borg. The sphere of water turned to ice and then Garret seemed to materialize out of it. He placed the tip of his wand on the sphere and some small bubbles appeared, leaving blood in their wake. Garret collapsed on the ground, coughing up a mouthful of water and something that sent a shiver through his body, bile.

The fiance had woke up in the middle of this and sat in silence, in shock and in fear of her and her lover's life. She watched Manius struggle against the ice in a panic and began screaming behind her gag and finding her bonds. She backhanded her and knocked the chair over with a kick.

"Silence." Azix slowly approached the ice sphere with a sour look on his face. He glanced briefly to see Garret on the floor gasping for air and mutter that he wasn't finished. Azix would see to it that Manius would indeed be finished.

With a desperate punch, Manius shattered the ice, sending ice and a river water across the warehouse. It quickly covered most of the fiance's face and her nostrils were flaring, bubbles of her precious breath bubbled out as she panicked. Azix didn't notice, he was wading through the water towards the Fanalis. He was coughing on all fours, slowly crawling towards his fiance, all thoughts on her. Azix stepped on his back and pointed his staff at the Fanalis' head with a look of unrestrained violence.

"Never, ever, touch one of Xenos' team." Azix said in a dead voice. "Die," he said in a soft whisper that made the Fanalis shiver. He whispered a command to the ruhk and five purple FRAGMENTS OF LIGHT pierced into each of his limbs and head. He quickly followed up with another series of commands and formed a narrow purple beam at the Fanalis' head, dealing a PIERCING LIGHT (C-Tier). With a kick to the Fanalis' side he'd turn back to the fiance as she struggled her last few breaths. His eyes were dead as he glanced at her with a wicked grin on his face, "I wonder, did you curse Manius in the street? Did you ever so briefly wish terrible violence on him?"

He watched the recognition in her eyes as her final half-breaths of air and water gurgled. She recognized him and he spoke during her final moments of consciousness before she convulsed and died. "This is because of you." With that he'd look around and all signs of madness would disappear. "My, my, what a mess we made, Garret."

Garret continued to cough, on his hands and knees even as the sphere of water and ice burst open from Manius' attack. Azix took control of the situation and utilized the advantage of Manius' current state in order to do the finishing blow.

The flesh on Manius' face was burned and, now that Garret was able to breathe, he could smell the burnt flesh. "Carmen." Garret rasped. "The knife." Carmen came out from behind a group of barrels. She looked to Azix apologetically. "I'm not the type to fight, so I was unable to contribute."

Garret pointed to the wound he had made earlier. "There." He was still breathing heavily, though he seemed to be getting it back under control. Carmen slid the knife into the wound Garret had made earlier, and dragged the man up against a wall. "Now lets get out of here. Bring the woman's body, we'll have to dispose of it somewhere."

He was tired. It was far too close a call, and almost not worth the trouble it had put him through. "Oh." He paused, turning to Azix. "Good job. I'm impressed with your skills. I think you'll be just fine."

This wasn't the most obvious place to find a body, but Garret already thought of a workaround. He'd have one of his contacts make a report to a guard that they saw a suspicious woman enter the warehouse with a man, but only the woman had left.

It was time for Garret to call it a day.
