The Copper Carafe Cafe:

Bakari sat in his often claimed chaise lounge by the windows on the north wall. The hose of a hookah (filled with some delightful mango flavored tobacco) rests between his lips. His right hand hovers above a chess board on the table before him as he ponders his next move. The day had been uneventful up to this point, and with Azhar making a journey to the capital on some unknown errand Bakari had little else to do but sit quietly in his favorite coffee house and play chess by himself. It was quite obvious that Bakari was favoring the black side of the board by the pile of white pieces that had already been captured.

There were a number of other people sitting around the shop. Some reading, others talking with one another, and some just enjoying a moment off of their feet with a steaming beverage. In a private room with the door ajar a painter was working on portraits for those customers with a little extra coin in their purses.

The day's music was being provided by a group of kids that looked as if they didn't know where their next meal was coming from. Their clothes were ragged, and stained. Their instruments were improvised, and of poor quality but the sound that came from them was decent. Slow, soft and relaxing.

With the cafe deserted, Bakari quickly finished his game and slurped down his coffee. The hookah coals had begun to burn low, and the shisha that was left was little more than a few good drags anyway. He felt as though he had gotten his money's worth. Still the fact that his teacher was gone and there was nothing to do with the rest of his day bothered him. The restless energy that normally plagued Bakari was particularly irritating and thoughts of engineering a new prank for Ahkram began to brew in his mind.

"Ding!"

The bell attached to the cafe's door chimed as the bartender Bakari encountered a few nights ago walked in. On his face as a worried expression as he quickly scanned the room. Locking eyes with the now standing Bakari he made his way over through the maze of tables, armchairs, and poufs.

"Hey there" Bakari greeted the man outstretching his hand. The bartender took it and shook firmly. Bakari could feel the man trembling.

"Hello young man. I wanted to thank you again for your help the other night, and ask you if there was any chance you might help out again." The bartender responded. Bakari withdrew his hand as the handshake went on a few seconds too long for his liking.

"Sure thing, what can I do for you?" Bakari asked with a broad smile.

"One of my waitresses was robbed on her way home from work last night. A group of thugs has been terrorizing her neighborhood these last few weeks. I was wondering if you would recover her money for her, and teach the men some manners. There would be a reward in it for you of course." The bartender answered, his hands still shaking. It was then Bakari saw it. What he first took as fear was fury. It was certain that if this man felt he was capable he would knock the thieves around himself.

"Not a problem sir. Just point me in the right direction and I'll make sure they don't rob anyone again" Bakari said confidently before placing a hand on the man's shoulder and steering him towards the door. This was just the type of excitement he needed today, and a few extra coins in his purse certainly would not hurt.

The crimson haired traveler adjusted the wide brimmed straw hat adorning his head, lowering it  even further into his light stricken vision, sighing in relief as he did so.The sun in Heliohapt could often feel like it was laying on the earth right next to a person no matter how much shade one  sought and procured.Even the sand around the country buckled under the solar pressure it would seem, bending and reflecting its power onto the hapless citizens of Heliohapt.

At least that's what Takumi always thought would be the case,The wandering Ronin was simply not used to it being so dry and arid, but the people living in this dust bowl of glittering sands and buildings of  gold were right at home and lively as ever.Over the past few years in his pursuit to become a great swordsman,Takumi had traveled to the district city of Kemet on many occasions but it still took him a few days to get used to the air, which almost always seemed to be filled with rolling dust clouds savory smells from street vendors  and children zooming around laughing and causing trouble for portly merchants who threatened to inform the troublemakers parents.

A smirk shadowed the corners of Takumi’s mouth as he padded along gracefully with long powerful strides  over a particularly uneven and sandy side street, making sure to keep a low profile. The various  gold baubles and eccentric necklaces that adorned Tak’s neck clinked together softly with a metallic whisper as his black and red accented cape-shawl billowed this way and that behind the young man like a restless veil of darkness. After a few shortcuts uneventful walking, the eccentrick swordsman arrived at his destination.

An establishment at the heart of Kemet where the fanalis had frequented on his past trips to the country if only for the rightfully famed coffee at the Copper Carafe Cafe. This time though there was business to attend to,his bounty contact from Riem would be here in an hour or so’s time.

The door swept open with a Ding as Tak stepped into the considerably cooler sanctuary from the midday’s heat. The place was just as he remembered it from a year ago, small cozy and bursting with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans.Adjusting the long toothpick he held casually in his mouth,Takumi swept the wide straw hat off his head revealing tousled red hair poking out from around the ornate headband tied around his forehead that featured a fierce looking jade green dragon.

Ahem!!

Takumi raised an eyebrow swiftly turning to his right to witness where the sound had come from

“I never forget a face that's been through these doors young man..i believe you still owe me for a cup.”

Tak shifted his weight uncomfortably as much of the patrons focused there attention on the eccentric newcomer being accosted by an older Woman employee with intense lavender eyes.

“Eh...well it's been awhile hasn't it? ... i'm in better shape these days though ma'am so here you are”

Tak flashed her his gleaming megawatt smile eclipsed by a single solid gold tooth before reaching into a coin purse on his belt and handing her some Huang.

The woman snatches the currency up and huffs walking away and grumbling something to the effect of: young whippersnappers and trying to charm their way out of everything.

Exhaling softly Takumi shook some loose sand out of his winged gold coloured sandals and headed to a corner with plush chairs and a large round table that was facing the doorway.

"So much for keeping a low profile"

He furrowed his brow slightly  while taking in the now overly curious locals, knowing that he had more to worry about than just a disgruntled cafe employee if he was going by his last visit to the  golden Country of Heliohapt.

With his fresh shoulder wound stinging with every little movement Bakari desperately wanted to relax. It was nearing midday, and he had a terrible thirst. Rather than waste his time going home, and being laughed at for his injury by Akram the young magician decided it might be better to pay a visit to the Copper Carafe Cafe. There was fresh coin in his purse demanding to be spent. Upon arriving Bakari broke his usual protocol of finding his favorite chair in front of the table with the chessboard, and instead made his way to the counter where the aging owner and server Aasima was serving customers. Bakari waved a friendly greeting, and hopped up on one of the stools close to the till.

"Hows it going today Grandma?" Bakari said poking a bit of lighthearted fun at Aasima to get her attention. The gray haired lady shot him a look that told him exactly where he could shove that "grandma" comment.

"Just fine dear" She replied her tone much more sweet than her expression. Her eyes widened and her expression shifted to one of great concern however as she noticed the bandage wound around Bakari's left shoulder. "I'm guessing you can't say the same?" She added trying to mask her concern with professionalism.

"Not at all. It's a fine day in my opinion. Made some coin, and a few new friends in the slums. I'd wager they aren't having any fun about now though....ugh" Bakari winced as he leaned against the counter. "May I have some black coffee please, and anything you might have that can dull this pain"

Quicker than one might expect from a woman of her years Aasima prepared a steaming mug of black coffee, and plated a flakey pastry with some sort of red jam oozing out of the vent holes in the top. Setting them in front of Bakari she noted "I'm not sure that it will do anything for the pain dear, but this might be just the thing to put a little pep in your step". Bakari instantly reached down to his waist to grab a few coins in payment, but Aasima's hand grasped Bakari's undamaged shoulder to stop him. "Not today, it's on me".

Bakari mouthed a silent "Thank you" before digging into the pastry. It wasn't at all bad. Sweet, a bit tart, and lightly brushed with a mixture of honey and butter. Before he could get out another word both the food, and his coffee were gone. "So Granny..." Bakari ducked this time. He knew that Aasima would only tolerate so much sass before she would decide to chuck her shop's namesake at his head. "Any new leads on work? I want to make sure I have enough coin to pay Azhar a years wage by the time he gets back from the capital".

"Not exactly, but you might ask around the shop today. The place is busier than usual, and more than a few of the folks here aren't locals. You know travelers, they always have money to spend and problems to solve". Aasima advised before turning her attention to another customer. Bakari scanned the room, and sure enough there were a few faces that were certainly not regulars. Picking one at random Bakari stood up with an audible groan, and made his way over. His first choice was a Fanalis male hidden under a straw hat. It wasn't often you had Fanalis in Kemet, and given their fearsome reputation if anyone was going to have a lead on the type of work he was looking for it was this man.

"Hey there, new in town?" Bakari asked in an attempt to get the man's attention. "I'm Bakari Al-Amin" he added before extending his arm for a handshake.

Tak scanned the room casually taking note of all those coming and going within the confines of the small cafe. The fanalis contact or "fixer" as they are known on the streets was a tall muscular man from Heliohapt named Gilga. The fixer was a good enough guy but usually only had bounty related jobs to offer whenever Tak floated into town,The fanalis wasn't exactly a hardened criminal but also didn't have any where near a squeaky clean record.Even still a few of the bounties that came up inevitably  were some past associates and job partners.

Those guys were mostly petty thieves he used to run with when he ran escort jobs for the thieves guild that showed him the world. Some men deserved to die or be captured for they are truly evil, but those  men were just trying to get ahead in a system that prefers nobility he always reasoned.A string of golden memories played in the young man's mind a moment as he considered his past silently

Still Tak waited patiently flagging a server over to his table and ordering a fresh cup while being careful not to raise the old womans ire any further who to Tak's relief was busy chucking an object at a locals head. When the server he ordered from arrived she made a big deal of sliding the cup across the table eliciting a smile from the crimson comet and some blushing from the server

“Thank you love,...if you wouldn't mind dropping some extra coin in your purse for the stellar service i've got some right here”

The woman giggled blushing some more and accepting the tip with a wary look towards Granny

Thank you!

She mouthed before hustling back to service the now packed cafe.Sure Tak often flirted with  beautiful woman finding it fairly easy to charm them but the real reason he handed the server a hefty tip was because Takumi noticed her from his trip here 10 months ago,she had been wearing the same tattered sandals all this time and they only seemed to be getting worse.

Hoping the woman would buy herself a new pair as he watched her tend to a table of foreigners not unlike himself,a moment passed by before Takumi caught movement to his right eliciting a slight head adjustment, only a single blazing Amber eye shown from underneath the shadow of the straw hat.cold and penetratingly observant.

The man was around Tak’s own age,he had a solid build, and was quite toned ,like a warrior ,despite the absence of scars on his body most  warriors seemed to carry with pride. His clothes and jewelry were of the Posh variety the fanalis noted as he drew nearer to the table.Several of the the pieces caught Takumi’s eye as a lover of jewelry and trinkets himself

The wandering Ronin had one leg folded neatly over the other and his hands were propped up behind his back as The man approaching finally reached the table and introduced himself politely while holding out his hand.Tak exhaled slightly now deeming the newcomer a non threat and reached out to shake his hand introduced himself as Bakari Al Amin

"Bakari huh...nice to meet you mate...Names Takumi...Tak if your short for words..eh"

The Fanalis shook the newly introduced mans hand only briefly, taking note of the lack of callus adorning Bakari’s palms causing Takumi to further deduce that this man could be a noble of some sort.

“Sit here if you'd like my friend...If its a travelers news you seek to swap from the east,
then i've got some Kina stories your better off not telling your sister about ,if you get my drift”

The Fanalis smirked wryly tipping his straw hat up a bit to reveal his face unshadowed and friendly,a toothpick dangling lazily from his mouth.

"Nice to meet you aswell, Takumi was it?"

Bakari answered politely before taking the offered seat across from the Fanalis. He was tough looking, and a bit rough in his speech. More than likely some sort of sell-sword or adventuring type. In other words exactly the type of person the young noble was hoping to meet. He scanned the room once more, and noticed that the chess board he was rather fond of using was unattended.

"As far as news from the east goes I would be eager to hear it. One in my position rarely gets to leave the city and when I do I don't travel far at all. Excuse me for one moment."

Bakari pointed the tourmaline tip of his walking stick towards the chess board, and whispered "Alsaahir alyad". The board gently lifted with all of it's pieces in place, and slowly floated over to the pair of gentlemen coming to rest on the table before them. Bakari quickly arranged the board to where the white side was facing himself.

"Perhaps you would indulge me in a game while we chat? If not I can play alone as I listen. I have to keep my skill up however. My tutor is returning soon, and he will be unbareable if he is able to beat me too easily."

Tak subtly kicked the chair out just a bit so that his new acquaintance could take a seat.Pleased to learn the man was eager to soak up a traveler's tale. The Fanalis reached for his belt and pulled out a small flagon of caramel rice wine and poured a generous amount into his coffee before returning it subtly.Takumi raised the cup taking a cautious sip as his eyes widened a bit,not from the alcohol spiked coffee ,but from the magic ability being displayed by his new acquaintance.

The snowy haired Magician casually levitated a chess board and all of its pieces to land in front of them on the table.Tak raised an eyebrow ,placing his coffee upon the coaster before waving his arms apologetically in regards to the proposed chess match.

*Chuckle*

well I've never been very good at chess mate, wayyyyyy to impatient, though it is interesting that my old Sword Master used to have me play him

Tak developed a sort of far off look if only for a moment, his handsome features melting back into their normal state of half amusement, half curiosity, continuing on.

"Heh I used to get an earful and extra chore duty whenever I'd cheat against the old man.. which was nearly every time."

Tak chuckled a bit before shifting in his seat slightly.

“This master of yours must be teaching you more than just chess stratagem,or do you just have a penchant levitating things around with a staff"?

The crimson comet gave Bakari a wry smirk postponing any eastern stories for the moment in lieu of his immense curiosity.
