Bells tolled as dark clouds gathered in the sky. The ringing beckoned a dreary atmosphere to descend upon Magnostadt creating a fitting atmosphere for a funeral. The body of Mikael Koval was being returned to the rukh today. In accordance with his wishes, a great flame would consume Mikael reducing the empty vessel left behind to ashes on the wind. There was not a large crowd gathered, but most of the people present were elderly magicians with influence and power within the academy. Some were friends of Mikael, some were enemies, but all of them held some respect for the man. His contributions to the academy and research into the creation of magic tools did not break new ground or revolutionize the world, but it was also performed with integrity and passion.

Mikael had been placed on a stone slab in the middle of a beautiful garden. His corpse had been dressed in a simple black academy teacher’s robe despite him being retired for years leading up to his death. A team of four Red magicians stepped forward and gathered around the body with ceremonial staves in hand. None of the four said a word as they took position at the for corners of the slab. Their solemn silence was echoed by the gathering of mourners. The only sound was the blowing of the wind and a distant rumble of thunder. Most among them had grim expressions but there was one magician present who held a sincere smile on their face.

Zion Koval had promised he would see his adoptive father off with a smile. The youthful looking magician was with Mikael when the old man passed away. Zion had yet to move on past that moment and even as he stood at the funeral now the scene played over again through his mind as it had many times in the two days it took to arrange things. The entire time Zion kept a soft smile on his face, an expression forced forward in order to keep that promise...

Returning to the moment once more in Zion’s minds eye, he found himself sitting beside a bed in a dimly lit lab. An emaciated old hand covered in wrinkles reached out for him. Zion gently took it into his own hands and looked down at his father who had been breathing slower and slower as the moments dragged on. Mikael’s eyes had already lost their light and his voice had become weak. There was no question that his time had almost come. ”Zion...My son...” Though he could no longer see, Mikael opened his eyes and slowly turned his head to face the living doll. Zion felt his chest tighten in response to his father’s voice. ”...are you…smiling?” It sounded like just speaking those words took everything Mikael had. Zion bit his lip at first and remained silent for just a moment. He then swallowed down the anxiety and fear he felt and put forth the brightest smile he could muster.

”Yes, father. I will be right here smiling until you are gone...Just like I promised.”

”Good...good...” The old man smiled back and squeezed Zion’s hand with what little strength he had left. ”There...is a letter...on my work desk...You know...what to do with it...yes?” The elderly magician had to pause for breaths between words. But he sounded at peace with himself and his end. Zion squeezed the mans hand back and replied, ”I should send it to the academy once you have returned to the great flow. I haven’t forgotten, father...When they come for you I am to wait patiently for instructions from someone named, Casvallion Deikraft.” The youth spoke with confidence but he struggled to hide his indignation. He did not want to be placed in the care of someone else, he wanted to remain with Mikael. But the old mans life coming to an end was inevitable at this point. Mikael’s life span had already been extended using magic at the cost of his vitality. It could not be prolonged any further, his time had come.

Mikael knew what Zion was thinking but he could only smile bitterly at his own misfortune. ”If only...I had broken...that damn shard sooner...I would have had...more time...Forgive me...Zion” Mikael’s eyes slowly closed once more and his voice weakened even further. ”Father, you gave me everything. There is nothing to forgive.” Zion consoled the old man and watched as he fell into a deep slumber. Seconds turned to minutes and minutes blurred into hours. Gradually the old man’s breathing stopped, then his hand lost its warmth eventually turning rigid. Only then did Zion gently place Mikael’s hands over his chest before standing up to deliver the letter.

The memory was all Zion could think about as he stood before the stone slab his father’s corpse was resting on. Reality tore the doll from his thoughts to brand another scene Zion could never forget into his mind. The four Red magicians called out a spell in unison. Flames were summoned forth forming a giant pillar of swirling flames that rose ten meters into the air. Zion felt the heat of the flames lick at his face and force his eyes into a squint briefly but within seconds the tornado of heat died down. Nothing was left of the body other than scorch marks and ash. Zion felt a cold emptiness in the bit of his stomach but he didn’t look away and he kept on smiling. To the magicians nearby it seemed strange. Some even began to whisper wild theories to each other generating a few baseless rumors. A few claimed that Zion was an outsider that took advantage of Mikael in his old age. Others suggested that Zion was a bastard child of some other magician whom Mikael took pity on. None of them knew the truth, only that Zion was Mikael’s heir.

Zion ignored the ignorant people around him and stood there until the rest had departed leaving the orphaned puppet alone in front of the stone slab. The clouds grew heavy and began to rain. The downpour was sudden and furious. Zion was immediately soaked as his forced smile melted away. Pain. Confusion. Anger. A howl drowned out by the deluge erupted from Zion as he cried. The rain drops rolling down his chin simulated tears the doll could never shed. After a time Zion had let everything out from the depths of his heart and simply stood there in the rain staring off into the distance...thinking. Mikael expected much from Zion, so he eventually reaffirmed the will to live up to those expectations. It was at that moment he realized the strange new phenomenon happening around him!

An unconscious genuine smile sneaked onto Zion’s lips as he looked up to the sky in amazed bewilderment. It was the first time he had ever seen rain. As a magician he could hear the rukh making sounds totally new to him. It was difficult for Zion to communicate with rukh of the second type right now, but being washed in it made him feel as though his spirit were being cleansed. Zion entered a relaxed almost zen-like state as he swayed gently under the rain. It wasn’t until a sudden stop in the downpour caught Zion’s attention. The doll opened his clear eyes to find a giant made of earth standing over him acting as a shield from all the rain. Beneath the giant also sheltered was a man wearing a red uniform and a white mask/helmet ensemble.

”You’re Zion Koval, right? I’m Casvallion Deikraft...”

Awoken from his daze the young magician now found himself face to face with the man his creator had entrusted Zion's future to. Zion couldn't put words to the emotions he had felt up till now, nor did he know how to describe the mysterious trance he had fallen into. Mikael only taught him the basic tools needed to function in the world. Speech, manners, and an introduction to magic. There simply wasn't enough time for the old man to educate Zion on matters of the heart and emotion. Confused and lost in an unfamiliar world, the doll had only one real connection to anyone other than the stout and confident looking man whom had approached him. The rain exhausted itself and the sky began to clear. Zion composed himself and offered a polite response, "Y-Yes, father said that you would take care of me in his absence..." He bowed respectfully as he spoke as he had been instructed to do.

The man in the red suit remained silent and expressionless as he watched Zion through the mask. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking but after a long pause he made a simple statement before turning to walk away. "I won't be taking care of you, that's your own responsibility." The resolute footsteps Casvallion led sparked some kind of feeling within Zion, yet another piece of his own heart the doll did not yet understand. Though the mans words were harsh, his bearing and confidence made Zion want to chase after him. Without saying a word, Zion stood and began to follow Casvallion. Silently the white haired doll wondered what the strange magnetism he felt towards the masked man.

"Could this be what father meant by being "great" someday?"

Zion did not know where Casvallion was leading him, but the masked magician's silence had a weight to it that made the doll feel it would not be right to ask. The giant made of earth was left behind to return to the ground. A gust sent flower petals dancing through the air across the funeral ceremony grounds just as they were leaving. Zion stopped and turned to look back at the stone slab Mikael was cremated on. It still hurt in Zion's chest to think of his father, but now there was another feeling burning within. It filled Zion with willpower and drive! Resolved to take the next step he engraved the scene of flower petals carried across the grave by the wind onto his heart.

There was so much Zion didn't understand about the city of magicians around him. His short life had been spent within Mikael's lab. When people came to bring Mikael's body to return to the rukh, Zion had accompanied them not really paying attention to his surroundings. His eyes watched them handle Mikael's body right up until the moment it turned to ash on the wind. Now his eyes took in the world Mikael had so eagerly been preparing him to face. A flying carpet was waiting for the two not far away and under Casvallion's control they ascended and flew towards a large city in the distance. The vastness of the plains was astonishing to the sheltered doll as he came to realize the world outside the lab was far bigger than he could ever imagine. What looked like a small silhouette in the distance gradually grew in size until its true scale as a massive city could be appreciated.

Awe at the grand structures showed plainly on the dolls face as his eyes lit up. It was new and exciting for Zion to simple marvel at the feats of engineering and magic that went into the construction of this grand city. "So this is Magnostadt..." Zion thought to himself as they descended as they came to approach an entry gate at the east end of the wall. The carpet came to a gentle stop just off the ground only to fold itself up neatly onto Casvallion's arm the moment he disembarked.

Zion was startled as he feet suddenly dropped a small distance before meeting earth. There was little time to recover his wits however as Casvallion didn't give him so much as a glance before walking towards the gate. Fearful of being left behind Zion stumbled slightly before following after the masked man. He was so flustered that he nearly ran into Casvallion when the  red dressed magician came to a sudden halt.

Catching himself just in time to avoid colliding with Cavallion, Zion finally got a hold of himself and looked to see why they had stopped. Standing in the gateway were three large burly men. "Welcome back Mr. Deikraft~" Each one wore the armor of an official gate guard along with arrogant looks as they grinned in Zion's direction. What's this? A new face? Even if its your guest, Mr Deikraft, rules are rules~" The man in the middle feigned lament towards his words but the sneer on his face was evident.

Casvallion smirked and began to walk forward, "Do as you like." The guards made way for the masked man but blocked the path once more immediately. This time, however, Casvallion stopped to wait for Zion leaning against the wall casually with his arms crossed. The young doll was left alone and unprotected against the three men. Zion felt scared and confused but he bravely stepped forward, albeit in a stance that made his frightful weariness quite obvious.

Cracking his knuckles the brutish guard in the middle hefted a large hammer upon his shoulders. Beside him the other two began to make a gamble between themselves. "Hehehe, I bet it's a cryer" one snickered but the other shook his head solemnly. "He's a pants-wetter for sure!" The declaration was followed by a self assuring nod. The goon in the center explained the situation to the bewildered Zion who didn't understand what was going on. "Only magicians are allowed to enter the great city of Magnostadt. The first time you enter, you must pass a simple test..." Surprisingly the burly man spoke in an amiable tone which caused Zion to relax unconsciously as a nervous smile came over his face. Naive as a child, Zion did not notice the awkward pause at the end of the mans speech nor the malice which swelled in his eyes. Casvallion relaxed against the wall and had remained stoic while he observed the doll, but now his mouth dropped agape briefly before he recovered himself and made a brief smirk.

BOOM!

Golden light formed a shell around Zion just in time to intercept the burly man's hammer. Zion's eyes widened in shock as his borg immediately shattered and collapsed around him. He didn't even notice the man swing the hammer, Zion only realized what was happening when the hammer had already rebounded off his borg coming to rest casually on the guards shoulder. He looked quite proud of his technique and held a smug look of superiority over his face. The other two were watching with wide eyes to see Zion's reaction. The youth lowered his head, his eyes obscured by hair, the guards could only see his lip trembling as his hands clenched into shaky fists.

"Look~ He's about to cry! Looks like I get to hammer the next one!"

The man thought his prediction came through so he whispered excitedly to his comrade next to him revealing that the guards were playing a game to take turns administering the test. Zion was not on the verge of tears however, on the contrary he was furious. The magician felt as if he had been tricked! To be deceived was worse than the physical violence itself! It made Zion's chest throb with pain and his blood turn cold. "You faker...you tried to make me think you'd be friendly..." Zion muttered under his breath.

"Huh? What was that?" The guard with the hammer was already turning around to hand the hammer off to the "winner" of the bet. He still had that smug grin as he turned back to Zion only to find that the young man was throwing a child-like violent tantrum! Zion was almost feral as he raised his head revealing eyes bloodshot with anger as he leaped forward clawing for the guards eyes with both hands. The doll had never experienced this emotion with such intensity before, he did not know where it led or when to reign it in.

The guard had just enough time to cover his face only to feel a smack to the side of his head and a scratching claw hand rake across the brace of his uniform. "W-What the hell!?" The guard had never had an entrant turn rabid on him before and his smug look fell away. The other two guards were stunned for a moment but they quickly moved to help tear Zion away from the guard only for kicks and fists to pepper them while they tried to pin the wild magician down.

"ENOUGH!"

It was like time froze as a film of black light covered the four brawling fools binding them in place. The resulting sculpture-esque scene was of Zion being held off the ground by three points with is foot firmly planted in the face of one guard while his teeth were biting down on the finger of another. Casvallion's voice and the sudden forced stillness allowed Zion to snap out of his fit. The voice made him realize that he had lost control of himself. The black light vanished with a swipe of the ivory wand Casvallion had produced. The guards backed away from Zion looking towards the masked man fearfully. Zion fell to the ground looking at Casvallion shamefully. Zion expected to get scolded but to his surprise, the enigmatic man began to laugh heartily.

Zion slowly got to his feet confused as Casvallion finished his chuckle only to turn and head into the city. "Hahahahaha!...Come! Welcome to the city of magicians!" His hand waved through the air beckoning Zion to follow. The youth's face was still throbbing as he had taken a few punches himself, his lip was even starting to swell. Battered and confused though he was, now that the guards weren't stopping him Zion returned to the task of hurrying to keep up with the only guidepost left for him in the world. "W-What about the test?" Zion asked tentatively, not sure if Casvallion would even answer him. In his fit the youth failed to even realize that his borg had been the test. "You passed." Casvallion stated simply.

As the pair entered the grand city of magicians Zion couldn't help but marvel in awe. The large structure at the center had been visible from outside the walls but now he could see that Magnostadt was full of buildings of elegant design. There was a geometric perfection at play everywhere Zion looked and the air was full of vibrant rukh. There were magicians everywhere flying around either using carpets or their own power. Much of the traffic appeared to be centered around the great central academy which stood over all other buildings. Today was the day of the Iktiyar! Many were rushing off to watch and see the students compete for the right to advance their Kodor. Seeing so many people headed towards one place, Zion naturally felt a desire to see what was going on, but Casvallion led him elsewhere in the city near the wall, far from where the excitement was happening.

"We're here. Follow me inside and I'll explain everything."

Casvallion finally stopped in front of an inconspicuous door to an otherwise large and conspicuous red stone manor. It seemed to be some sort of servants entrance which led into a dimly lit passageway. The scene was dark and ominous but it didn't take long to brighten up as Casvallian led them through another door and into an elegant hallway with polished obsidian stonework furnished with fine red carpets trimmed in gold. There were windows letting sunlight pour in from an inner courtyard giving the grand hallway a less oppressive feeling than the cramped grey stone passages. Zion was happy to leave them behind. They walked only a short distance further before Casvallion led the young magician out into the courtyard. There he stopped and turned to face Zion with an enigmatic smile. Zion couldn't tell what the man was thinking at all and gulped down his nervousness to prepare himself.

"We're finally somewhere ears can't easily listen in...Allow me to introduce myself once more. I am Casvallion Deikraft, some call me the "Crimson Rock" for my deeds in the war against Kou just a few years ago...but your creator called me his student, even up to his death bed."

The man reached into his glove and revealed a folded up piece of paper. It was the letter Zion had sent following Mikael's death. Zion didn't quite recognize the paper immediately, but upon hearing that Casvallion was a former student of his fathers made him relax a bit mentally. Casvallions voice was also noticeably less detached and cold than before which helped to ease the mood. "To be honest, I thought the old man had lost his mind when I first read the letter." The masked man said as he began to unfold the document in question. "I don't particularly owe Mikael any favors, but I've always respected him and refusing a dying mans request would leave a bitter taste in my mouth...So I've decided to accept this burdensome task entrusted to me by your creator."

Feeling like he was in a safe place with someone he could trust, Zion heaved a sigh of relief and gave an awkward smile as he asked, "So what did my father ask you to do?" His eyes looked on with curious hope. Hope that this man could tell him what he should do to become great. Casvallion made a strange look and paused to gather his thoughts. "Well...to put it bluntly...He asked me to hide the fact that you aren't a "real person" so you could attend the academy normally." The red dressed man said it casually but the words were a sharp blow to Zion. Not a "real person"? Zion yet to really understand what this meant but it made him feel deeply upset. Did that mean he was just a fake? Was his existence a lie?

Seeing the trouble stir in Zion, Casvallion cleared his throat and continued, "Originally I thought of you as just some imprint of someones rukh placed onto a doll with a stored amount of magoi. Much like a golem or sorts. After all, golem creation magic was the specialty Mikael taught me.  But...your little scene at the gate convinced me Mikael wasn't lying when he said he was able to create a new "life" born of magic. You might not have noticed but the rukh around you became excited back then. I don't know why the rukh acknowledge you, or how he did it, but your creator truly did manage to perform a miracle. You are truly a "real person" in spirit. It's your body that is the problem..."
