ARIEL HAREL

("effectively threatening, yet effectively well.")

HE TURNS HIS HEAD THOUGHTFULLY. HIS BROWS FURROW AS THE THUG PROVIDES INSTRUCTIONS TO LAPIS'S WHEREABOUTS.

“WHAT'R YOU TALKIN’ ABOUT WHAT?” THE THUG HUFFS AND ATTEMPTS TO WRIGGLE AWAY FROM ARIEL. THE MAGICIAN PRESSES HARDER WITH HIS FOOT AND PLACES THE EDGE OF HIS WAND TO THE OTHER MAN’S NECK. HE HISSES A WARNING - ONE WRONG MOVE AND HIS HEAD ROLLS ON THE FLOOR WITHOUT HESITATION. THE MAN FREEZES. HIS EYES DRIFTS TO THE SHINY BLADE THREATENING HIM OMINOUSLY.

"HOW PLEASANT..." HE MUTTERS. ARIEL SHOOTS THE MAN A DARK GLARE, HIS GAZE DIGGING PAINFULLY INTO THE BACK OF THE THUG'S HEAD. WHAT A DISTASTEFULLY IRRESPECTABLE MAN, ARIEL DECIDES. WITH AN INDIGNANT HUFF, HE POKES THE THUG WITH HIS WAND. THE THUG'S HEAD JERKS AWAY, BUT HE DOES NOT UTTER ANOTHER COMPLAINT. ARIEL CONTINUES TO PRESS HIS WAND TO THE SIDE OF THE MAN'S NECK, FORCING IT INTO A SLIGHTLY TURNED POSITION. HE CANNOT DENY HIS UNCHARACTERISTICALLY VIOLENT DISPLAY OF AGGRESSION YET HE CAN HARDLY BOTHER WITH THE MORAL SIDE OF IT. NOT WHEN THE MAN DESERVES ALL THE SHIT ARIEL DELIVERS. SOMEHOW HE HAS A FEELING THE HEAVENLY JUDGES WAY UP IN THE SKY [ or, the authorities ] WOULD DISAGREE WITH HIM BUT HE COULD HARDLY CARE ABOUT WHAT THEY THOUGHT.

WITH TIME PASSING BY EVERY MOMENT WASTED ON THIS SCUM, HE STARTS TO REMIND THE THUG OF DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT COOPERATING BUT THE OTHER BEATS HIM TO THE FIRST WORD. "RECENTLY THE BOSS CAME ACROSS THIS LITTLE GIRL AND STARTED TALKIN' ABOUT BEING RICH AN' STUFF," THE THUG STARTS.

...LITTLE GIRL - RICH? A RANSOM? NOT LAPIS. COULDN'T BE. BUT HE CANNOT RESIST THE URGE TO ASK. HE NEVER COULD. "HOLD ON - RICH? HOW?" HE DEMANDS TO KNOW.

"DUNNO. IT DON'T MAKE SENSE. I NEVER SEEN THAT LITTLE GIRL IN MY LIFE - AND SHE DON'T LOOK LIKE SOME RICH KID. MAYBE THE BOSS IS GONNA SELL HER. SHE DOES HAVE A PRETTY EXOTI-"

"NOT ANOTHER WORD OF THAT," HE INTERRUPTS. HIS VOICE SHAKES SLIGHTLY, AND HIS EYES GLIMMER ANGRILY. LIKE HELL HE WOULD LET THIS BASTARD DARE SUGGEST SUCH A- SUCH A- DISGUSTING IDEA. HE EASES HIS ANGER INTO A QUIET SLEEP, REMINDING HIMSELF THE THUG MERELY STATED THE POSSIBILITIES WITH NO BIAS HINDERING HIS JUDGMENT. "NOW, WHERE ARE YOU KEEPING HER?"

("unafraid - forward forward - life is without fear - life is without delicate.")

"SO…YOU GONNA TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON, ARIEL?"

THE FORCE HE UTILIZES HIS WAND DISAPPEARS, AND HE ALLOWS THE THUG MORE BREATHING ROOM. HE GLANCES AT REED BUT IMMEDIATELY COWERS BENEATH THE OTHER'S SERIOUS EXPRESSION. HE STARES AT THE GROUND INSTEAD, STUBBORNLY DECIDING NOT TO TALK. BUT THOUGH HIS EYES SHIFT AWAY HE CAN STILL SEE REED'S EXPRESSION. IT MAKES HIM WILT, AND HIS RESOLVE DISAPPEARS LIKE WATER POURED ON SUGAR. HE STEPS AWAY AND KNOCKS THE THUG OUT. RELUCTANTLY HE TURNS AROUND AND APPROACHES REED WITH HESITANT STEPS. BUT NOT ONE INCLINED TO SKITTISHNESS, HIS WARY MOVEMENTS TURN CONFIDENT, AND HIS SHIFTY EYES BECOME DIRECT.

"HAVEN'T YOU ASKED ENOUGH QUESTIONS TO UNDERSTAND? AS I ALREADY TOLD YOU - I AM CURRENTLY SEARCHING FOR A CHILD. IF YOU'RE TIRED OF FIGHTING THEN YOU'RE WELCOME TO RETURN TO THE UNIVERSITY, BUT I WILL NOT GO WITH YOU. I'M STILL SEARCHING AND I WON'T STOP UNTIL I FIND HER." HE SPEAKS WITH UNABASHED RESOLUTION, HIS DETERMINATION SHINING THROUGH HIS EYES AS HE ADDRESSES REED.

HE MOVES ONE FOOT TO THE SIDE, PREPARED TO LEAVE AFTER HE ADDS ONE MORE THING. WITH AN ALMOST LAZY GESTURE HE SAYS, "COME OR LEAVE - I DON'T CARE." WITH HIS FINAL THOUGHTS STATED, THE NOISE OF HIS FEET LANDING ON THE STONE FOLLOWS HIM OUT.

("here to fight and nothing more. the time for peace has passed; the time for war begins.")

HE FOLLOWS THE THUG'S INSTRUCTIONS TO A TWISTING AND TURNING ALLEYWAY. WITH A LITTLE DIFFICULTY [ what with being a magician and all his physical abilities aren't exactly impressive ] HE PULLS HIMSELF OVER WALLS AND FITS THROUGH SMALL OPENINGS UNTIL HE FINALLY EMERGES IN A DECAYING BUILDING. AND IT IS NOT EMPTY. NINE PEOPLE OCCUPY THE DETERIORATING WAREHOUSE-LIKE ROOM. HE SPOTS A FAMILIAR, WHITE-HAIRED GIRL CURLED UP IN THE CORNER OF THE ROOM. AROUND HER, EIGHT SWORD-WIELDING THUGS GUARD HER. HIS BLOOD BOILS AT THE SIGHT OF HIS DEAR LAPIS LOOKING SO MISERABLE AND SCARED. HAD THEY NO MORALITY? NO COMPASSION? TO TREAT A LITTLE GIRL SO UNKINDLY-! HE STEPS FORWARD WITHOUT HESITATION, PREPARING HIS WAND TO BRING IT UPON THEIR HEADS.

MANY EYES FLICK TOWARDS THE HOT-HEAD MAGICIAN. ONE THUG SPEAKS FROM THE CROWD, GLANCING WARILY AT HIS SCYTHE. "WHO ARE YOU?" HE DEMANDS. ARIEL REGARDS HIM WITH A PITILESS EXPRESSION AND INSTEAD OF ANSWERING, HE CHOOSES TO BLAST THE MAN WITH A QUICK SPELL. THE THUGS IMMEDIATELY GO ON THE ALERT. THEY BRANDISH THEIR SWORDS AND THREATEN THE TWO MAGICIANS.

REED HARPER

Reed let out an exasperated sigh as his attempt to reason with Ariel was once again met with his characteristic stubbornness. While he was fully ready to leave after having been given an “out,” he couldn’t help but feel responsible for making sure he didn’t do anything stupid. Clearly, they were dealing with some unsavory folk and taking the thugs’ conversation into account, Reed’s honor would not allow him to abandon a friend in need because he felt inconvenienced. So, it was his only recourse to follow the immensely angry and extraordinarily brash comrade into the alleyway the thug mentioned.

Ariel...Ariel…” Reed whispered, trying to get the magician’s attention, “Perhaps we should exercise just a little more caution…” His request fell on deaf ears as the magician wedged himself through a small opening over the wall, strutting right into the enemy lair with seemingly no plan or any means of protecting himself against the unknown amounts of ruffians within.

That moron!” He quipped to himself, utilizing the moderate amount of athleticism he had to leap onto the wall and peek his head through the small opening, only to glance upon Ariel confronting nine neer-do-wells with his wand. Curiously, there was a girl there, a young girl, with mysteriously colored hair. This was the girl Ariel was after? Reed felt confused but wishing to fulfill his duty as excellent friend, he leapt in, joining his friend in battle against the thugs before them. Before Reed could boast some confident remark, Ariel immediately shoots magic toward one of the men, inciting the remaining eight thugs to rush toward the two of them.

Are you insane, Ariel!? We are NOT prepared for this kind of fight!” Reed barked, before brandishing his wand. He waved it around his body elegantly, revealing a beautiful array green light before stepping out in front of his friend, ready to take on the assault of the “vanguard.” “Back off, scum--Sforzando!” The resulting blast connected with two of the thugs sending them flying toward the walls. The remaining thugs were halted in their charge toward the two magicians, giving Ariel enough time to craft a spell to fell the other ruffians.

ARIEL HAREL

("rage begott blind fury...")

'Not prepared'—if Ariel's mind distinguished voices from background chatter, the sound magician could have expected a few sharp jabs about his confidence or lack thereof. Luckily(?) for Reed, the black magician's singular focus on Lapis blocked out any of the younger magician's attempts to reason with an insane and crazed Ariel. In his funneled rage, he damned caution. Let them come at him! He heedlessly encouraged them! Rush toward him! Meet him head on! Even with their weapons out it wouldn't change their fate, but at least they might scrape up a smudge of respect as they died——wait, no! What was he saying!? No matter what he would scorn and mock the pathetic scum who would kidnap a young child—and for what!? As he concentrated his magic into his weapon, his expression turned murderous, lips curled up into a snarl and brows pressing down upon his gleaming eyes. These assholes who endangered the child whom he promised to find and protect from harm—by his blade he would cut them all down!

As the death-seeking fools lumbered forward, Ariel summoned two spheres of black light. But just as he released the spell, something obscured his vision. In his anger, Ariel did not immediately recognize Reed. He lifted his scythe, prepared to bring it down upon the blocking head before suddenly—the sound of the ground crackling with a 'boom' stopped his hands. His eyes shut briefly—he had not expected the sudden noise, and it pained his sensitive ears. But it revealed who the back belonged to—Reed. He steadied the staff and pulled it back with the realization of whom the back belonged to. But accompanying this, another fact brought itself to light. A dark shadow fell over his face. This little shit!  Ariel remained silent, stubbornly refusing to praise or thank him even as Reed took out two of the thugs, indignant of Reed treating him as a fragile, china teacup. Placing himself in front of the black magician as though Ariel needed protection! What an offensive idiot!  He reached out to drag Reed back.

"Get out of my way!" he snapped.
