If Merari wasn't so concerned with the state of his robes, he would've sat down against the fence instead of just leaning against it. His legs were already starting to get tired from just standing around for the past hour, but he didn't want to risk sitting down in something he couldn't see while out in the dark.
With a somewhat angry sigh, the young Magician crossed his arms over his chest as he squinted his eyes. There wasn't much to see, and what he could see were some the dark figures of the cows that dotted the pasture. Turning his head, Merari then checked his sides before looking over his shoulder to peer behind him.
Again, nothing. If there really was something that was bothering the cows it hasn't shown up yet, and already he was starting to feel cranky. Merari didn't want to stay out here longer than he had to, but he already promised that he would help the farmer on behalf of his Magnostadt.
With a groan, Merari pushed himself away from the fence and stretched out his legs. Lowering his gaze, Merari tried to watch where he was stepping as he begun to pace around. As he walked, the Magician would occasionally raise his head to glance around before going back to watching the ground.
What felt like was an hour, but in reality couldn't be more than ten or twenty minutes, passed before he heard something. Coming to a pause, Merari grabbed the fence to steady himself as he looked around. His eyes were still squinted against the dark, though he was able to hear something. It sounded like some sort of bird calls, and the longer he listened, the more it started to grow louder.
Out from the dark came out a pair of birds that fluttered about, and from what he could tell only one was making that obnoxious sound. They weaved and bobbed through the air, with one of the Hooter's squawking filling the air.
Taking out Komori, Merari was preparing to pluck the staff's strings when one of the Hooters spotted it. In a screech, the bird that was causing most of the commotion folded its wings and dove from above towards Merari, his talons outstretched in preparation.
Merari's Borg flared to life in an attempt to block the incoming attack, but the Hooter shot through the Borg, the glowing globe that surrounded the Magician immediately cracking and falling apart. With a cry, the bird's claws easily tore through his robes and raked across his shoulder before flapping away from Merari.
The bird, spreading its wings, was about to circle back around to attack again when Merari began to play Komori. Three notes were played before he flipped the staff around and waved it. He then preceded to utter, "Adagio", and suddenly, the Hooter's speed dropped significantly as its body was filled with lassitude. It gave a desperate squawk as it flapped its wings to steady itself.
Before the Hooter could resume with its attack on his person, Merari with furious fingers began to strum Komori once more. The notes resonated in the air as the Magician flipped the staff around and swung it in a horizontal sweep, the words of "Allegro" being whispered from his mouth.
In a miniature display of magic, the Sound Rukh clashed together before resulting in a sound wave that "exploded" in the male Hooter's face, shoving it back into the fence. With a squawk, it fell to the ground, and in that moment the second Hooter, upon seeing that her potential mate was down, began her own attack.
Merari, spotting the incoming blob of a figure, used the flute part of Komori to blow a lively tune. Just as the Hooter was closing in, Merari then gripped Komori by the neck before pointing the staff at the Hooter.
"Gilliard!" He shouted, and in a rush the spell tackled face first into the Hooter. With a cry, it fell to the ground, defeated by the spell.
Seeing that his last enemy was down, Merari put Komori back before raising his hand to grab his shoulder. He winced in pain and drew his hand away after feeling his fingers grow wet. The damn bird managed to draw blood.
With a scowl, Merari gave a glare to the downed Hooters before grabbing them in both hands, holding the dangerous birds by the talons, before starting to march back to the farmer's house to inform them that their troubles were over with. Hopefully, they would take pity and bandage his shoulder for him, or, better yet if they knew Magic, heal it.
