Liberating Aosta I:

"When your castles of sand crumble into the ocean, will you stand by that which you held in splendor, or will you fade like the beautiful lie you lived in?"
500+/500
~

Amaya sucked her breath in silently, holding her body back from a physical reaction as best she could. It hadn't been that long, had it? Another soft movement had her slipping into the passing crowd, utterly hidden from anyone and everyone by simply existing in plain sight. She would wait. It was obviously the only logical course of action, after all, assumptions only made fools and corpses, and Amaya wasn't keen on becoming either of those. Caution was always the modus operandi, but the Tan family demanded a different level of respect, even if it was their youngest member. Amaya had to be sure, a string of insatiable curiosity following her. A flash of white and a stylized ear that peeked from her pack was all the woman needed to confirm her suspicions. It was indeed the woman she thought. Amaya instantly made herself scarce, disappearing down an alleyway before slipping into the tents and commons of the bazaar.

The building was rather...dare she say, dilapidated. Still, it was the lead she had been given, and the woman was intent on following through with the job, at least for the payment she had been promised. Tromun was no Remano. It paled in comparison to the grandeur of the capital city by miles. Still, it was incredibly developed for a frontier town, and the fact that the town had grown large enough to have a visible class divide impressed her. She ran some probability estimates and figured that someone here acted as senator, which meant someone wanted his seat. She sighed, wishing the poor bastard the best of luck before she rapped on the planks of the near-decrepit door.

A thunderous rattling and explosive clang greeted her ears, followed by a muffled "Goddammit." She cocked her head to the side, her hands slipping casually to the ends of her scarf. Amaya prided herself on being prepared for a great number of things, but a goliath suit of armor opening the door and beckoning her past the threshold was certainly something she never would have accounted for, not even in her wildest of fantasies. She moved forward utterly stunned as the workplace stretched out before her, the goliath returning to his post in a seeming arena. A tall, pale blonde with startlingly amethyst eyes set her gaze on the woman, stone faced. The facade suddenly broke as her bubbly nature shone through. "Oh! A guest! Damnit!" She flicks her staff from her back, a sudden flurry of seeming automatons shoving unnecessary rubble and debris aside. "Come on, find a seat somewhere...Wherever there's a chair..."

She rolled her shoulders back in the inn letting the tension drain from her body. The rubble certainly didn't make for the most comfortable of seats, but it was something she could deal with. Her mind processed the information she had been given. The Kou soldiers had defected from their group as the army began to lose. As a consequence, the soldiers that remained were routed. She could only theorize that these defectors would have lingered somewhere, and could perhaps be the reason Aosta was now cut off, but ultimately, nothing was for certain. She simply eyed Perseus and let the steam from the scalding tea mask her face, her mind wondering precisely who else the buffoon had trusted with this job.

AOIFE REIS
Aoife rushed off the boat into the coastal town, blowing by townsperson and whatever inflated sense of ego official was in front of her, drawing many a rude glare or “hey! watch that!” from men and women she shoved out of her way. She was unsure what to do, where to go, the only thought in her mind was making her way to her hometown and check to see if her parents were okay. Her grandparents, her friends--all the people she held dear in life, they couldn’t possibly be gone. Aoife stormed toward the city gates, her staff gripped tightly in hand.

Halt! The city’s gates are closed until further notice--there are reports of bandits nearby,” A gatekeeper barked, his halberd pointed at the young magician’s face. Torn from her vengeful trance, she stepped back in fright at the guard’s act of aggression. “It’s for your own safety, miss. You will die if you leave town…” There was a hint in remorse in the warrior’s voice. Perhaps he was hurt in the same way Aoife was, faced with constant worry that the fates of her loved ones were left unknown--perhaps the guard lacked closure in the same way Aoife did now. Or perhaps his passiveness meant he had the closure Aoife desired currently, and for just a moment, the pain of believing what was already probably all too true, was far too great to rise up in anger, but instead to wallow in despair.

Please...my...I just...I just have to know if they’re okay…” Aoife couldn’t manage to articulate the words she wanted to scream, all she could do was plead with what little vocabulary she had control of in the moment. The guard merely shook his head in refusal, gesturing the lady magician to walk away. Perhaps it was best to leave, at least now she could blissfully live with the ignorance that her family was alive. Frustration took hold of Aoife yet again, her thoughts were spiraling out of control, ruminating only on the worst possible outcome. How could she know if her parents had died? How could she know her tiny village was razed to the ground? Sure, her father was a successful shipping magnate, but her home town was just a simple mining settlement. Her father enjoyed the outdoors and wished to expand into different business ventures, there was absolutely no reason that he would live in such an off-the-beaten-path town, but their mother insisted it would be better for Aoife to be raised in a small town. It was strange, no matter the stress, no matter the hard times, Aoife never thought to look to easier means to quell her pain, but there was nothing really effective that could satiate her sadness, so she took to the nearest tavern, hoping to find solace at the bottom of a bottle of substantially alcoholic spirits. She walked in, feeling a bit overdressed for such an establishment, and placed herself right at the bar, slamming her hand on the table to order a drink. At least, that’s how she figured one ordered a drink at a bar.

You look rough...bad day?” The bartender inquired, pouring some mystery liquid into a glass and handing it to her. Aoife merely nodded and grabbed the bottle from the man, pouring a healthy dose of liquid into her mouth before grimacing in pain at the bitter taste of alcohol. Her eyes widened as it traveled down her throat, the burning sensation VERY apparent.

Holy shit...why does anyone drink this?” She asked, clutching the bottle in her hand. The bartender merely laughed and took the glass of liquor for himself, sitting back down to wait for a new order as he kept to himself, tending bar. Aoife took another swig, thinking a “why the hell not” as she winced again as she swallowed the burning liquid. “Werll...it does, uh, hic, it does make you feel reaaaaaaaally good that’ssss fer surrrrrrree

She was a lightweight…

Aoife witnessed a few patrons walk into the bar, taking seats in a section of the room. Whether it was her “slightly” intoxicated state or the sheer bravado of someone who’s a little too lost in the sauce, she “carefully” edged her stool closer to the table, hoping to eavesdrop. She insisted it was woman’s intuition, or perhaps the mad musings of drunken stupor, but there was something telling her that these were the people to follow.

The two had been traveling together for months now, without as much as a single word being passed between them. It had been a quiet journey, though it didn’t bother her very much. This wasn’t the first time Sung-Sun had been assigned a silent ‘watcher’ before. She had actually preferred them this way, since she wasn’t exactly the talkative type herself. Despite all these ‘watchers’ having varied personalities, their appearance always seemed to stay the same. Each and every one of them sported the following gear; a simple white hooded-cloak, clean bandages that wrapped up to above their nose, and a large grey backpack on their back. The assassin had no idea what they had looked like beneath all of that, but she didn’t exactly care either. They were simply there to serve her and her family’s every motive. In this specific scenario, it was to escort the youngest member of the Tan family to the country of Reim.

“Looks like we’re finally here, young miss.” The raspy-voiced man would state with a wheeze, stopping in his tracks entirely. Sung-Sun however, would continue to stay quiet, only to give the man a nod of reassurement. It sure had taken them quite a while, traveling primarily on foot, but they were finally able to reach the country of Reim. It was quite different from what she was used to, in Kou.

The duo had entered in through the bottom of the country, by boat originally. It was kind of like the border between Reim and Heliohapt in a way. The Western Front, it was a miserable and war-shattered land. Everything looked so dry, in comparison to the beautiful weather her homeland got around this time of year, and despite it being very desert-like, the place was freezing cold. Despite all of this, she was still extremely fascinated by the scenery. This had been the first time she’s left Kou, after all. She had officially become of appropriate ranking within her family, so she was now permitted to travel the lands.

“I suppose I’ll be seeing you then.” Sung-Sun’s watcher would say, handing her a large folder before walking off. After taking about ten steps forward, he would pause yet again. “Oh, also. Whenever you’re ready to go back home, contact Zhang. You’ll be able to find him far north of here, where the thorns grow the thickest.” with that, Sung-Sun would officially be on her own from here on. The girl could be seen scratching the bridge of her nose, looking upon the town she had been led to. “Time to get to work.”

Using the remaining words in the thread to train an a-tier ability

Aoife's stupor would be cut through by a sudden, and powerful "WHAT?!" The man's voice was thunderous and, Amaya thought, rather unbecoming of a man who claimed such wisdom and social prowess.

"You heard me the first time you fool," she muttered, taking a sip of her ale. "They haven't left yet. Or rather, there's the possibility that a gang of criminals has stayed." She sighs. "Unfortunately, that doesn't give us shit. We still don't know if they're the problem, or if they're even in the town. They could be hiding in fear for all you know, trying desperately to blend in with the locals. We need more conclusive evidence before we pin this down and slaughter a bunch of thugs." Her eyes narrow at the man, the sudden storm in her gaze mirrored by a visible seething in the tar-colored rukh around her. "I'm not about to slaughter my kin on a hunch of yours, you blasted fool. If we garner enough to prove them criminals I'll do it, but no proof means no contract, and you know that." She glowers Perseus, the placid expression holding back a palpable rage.

"Look, I'm the one paying you t-" A swift thunk cuts the man off, as her dagger stabs into the table directly between the man's index and middle finger. "I have my conditions, and you haven't payed me yet. Don't overstep your power, old man." She rips her dagger from the wood, a several splinters carried with the force of the blade. She kicks her chair in, turning her head to the man. "You know how to find me when you've come to your senses." She glides past the counter, taking her leave up the stairs as a wave of rage and murderous intent wash after her.

She sighed. The knife laying against the table as she bled into the bowl once again. The pain was almost a comfort at this point, and it reminded her of the promise she had made. She would be better than the war-hungry frames of her kin. There were other ways to bring pride to her name, and she refused to let her lack of self control better her. She ripped a strip of cloth from her supplies, shoving a paste of herbs into the wound before wrapping her forearm. Her form fell against the mattress with a groan. One day she'd let things like that pass her by, but one day seemed to be further and further away. She threw her armor back on, wrapping herself in a cloak before lumbering downstairs to sit at the bar top. She waved the bartender for another ale, sinking into the silence of the alcohol.

AOIFE REIS
She jolted in her seat, nearly falling off her stool at the man’s thunderous yell of inquisition. Well, this was certainly juicy! Aoife had never experienced the highlife of Reim before--her father usually sequestered her to stay in the confines of her hometown: “all that you need is here, my apple~” he would say, rubbing her head and sending her off to play with the other children in the town. Simpler times, those were, where Aoife needn’t worry about principles of magic, or making friends, or the most grave of worries: if her friends and family were alive. At this point, the altercation (as Aoife defined it in her current state) was loud enough that it was entirely possible to ignore the back-and-forth of the two bar patrons. She tried her best to ignore it, edging her stool back to the bar in hopes of ordering another round, until the word ‘criminals’ echoed throughout the room. Time stopped as Aoife was saddled with unbridled rage...she had never felt this before, she had never felt this indiscriminate anger toward an entire classification of people. She had hoped to turn around and casually introduce herself into the conversation, but before she knew it, the woman aggressively took her knife and whisked herself away upstairs, leaving the man at the table with a dumbfounded and slightly stupid looking expression.

Rats…” She sighed, gently pounding her fist against the counter top as she reluctantly gestured her hand and knocked on the mahogany bar, signaling barkeep to pour her another cold one. “To...waiting…” Aoife clinked her glass with absolutely nobody, creating an imaginary figure next to her with which she could cheers her drink with. It did not hit her until now, but she was woefully unhappy--Magnostadt was superb, yes, but all she learned was the study of magic. Thinking back on it, she made absolutely no friends...her (brief) return to Reim was supposed to be magical, uplifting...it was supposed to give her the zeal to return to the stuffy academy and knock her studies out of the park. Instead, she was left to drink alone at a bar in the (what seemed like) annals of Reim as two drunken patrons argued over the possibility of bandits. She took one, large, substantial swig of her ale before setting it down on the bar, immediately hiccuping and belching in rhythmic tandem as she fought back the urge to vomit right there. As she felt her hand over her mouth, trying to pass off her inability to drink as a silly quirk, the woman from before sat down at the bar near her, ordering a drink. Every fiber of Aoife’s being was telling her that the woman probably desired silence, but the alcohol inside of Aoife was kicking those fibers and telling her that this would be a wonderful opportunity to potentially make a fool out of yourself. Perhaps she was charmed by the prospect of making a friend...not sure why drunken Aoife would think a stranger in a bar in a town she’s not familiar with is a friendly prospect but she wasn’t going to fill her life with that sort of negativity.

So, um, seemed like an, *hiccup*, sorry, heh...it seemed like an intense argument…” Aoife stammered, bravely making her way through the sentence. She grabbed her class and decided to stand up, her balance definitely not even remotely steady as she jammed her foot into the ground, as if that was going to help stabilize her. “So, what exactly is this group here for, exactly?” The redundancy was not lost on her and she merely mouthed the word “fuck” as she continued to speak. “Maybe...I...can help?

Sung-Sun couldn't help but get the feeling that someone was watching her. Of course it wasn't that strange, considering she was amidst a large crowd at the time. So she'd simply push the feeling back, as the last thing she needed was some sort of silly distraction. She had a job to take care of, a job that had been hand-written by her father. Just before leaving home, he had given her the small sliver of paper containing said job.

Pressing up against the paper with her nimble fingers, it would easily slide open. 'The Burning Lantern.' it said, written in a fine blood-red ink. The young assassin wasn't expecting much information to begin with, considering how small the paper was, but she still expected something more. A name at least? Instead, she'd simply get the name of what seemed to be an inn. Hopefully whatever she needed to do there was obvious, because she didn't have much to go on.

Letting out a sigh of disappointment, the girl would place the paper back into her front pouch. She couldn't help but wonder what was in store for her, and whom had been assigned as a target. If this was even a mission to kill someone, that was. Whatever the case, Sung-Sun knew she had no right to be upset. If she hadn't stormed off from dinner the night of her departure, maybe she would have more info. She couldn't help but feel as if her big brother had something to do with the lack of knowledge.

It wasn't long after that, that she had found where she needed to go. The Burning Lantern, a sort of shoddy looking inn placed towards the edge of town. She didn't know what to expect before going inside, hell she hadn't even been inside of an inn before. Let alone one that looked like this. Pushing the two doors forward, the youngest member of the Tan clan would take her first step inside of the building. That's when she would be greeted by the sound of an angry drunk, pushing her aside to exit the place.

A trickle of sweat would form on the nape of her neck, as an anger would begin to build up in her small body. She knew she needed to keep calm, but what kind of disgusting and rude troglodytes did this place even serve? Instead of causing a ruckus, the girl would simply stick her tongue out towards the man's turned back. After brushing off the shoulder that the man had touched, she would find a seat towards the back of the bar. It was near a couple of unfamiliar, yet civilized looking women. Despite them not looking like a potential threat to her, she would still make sure to keep a distance from them, by sitting a couple of seats over.

"When your castles of sand crumble into the ocean, will you stand by that which you held in splendor, or will you fade like the beautiful lie you lived in?"

~

It was a face she'd recognize anywhere. The deep, unsettlingly blue hair, the polished physique. She was a Tan, of that there was no doubt. Amaya cursed herself under her breath for getting too comfortable in the area she was in, reaching into her pack and plugging away at a trinket. She turned her voice to the clearly sloshed woman, maybe a whore of some kind? It didn't matter. She wasn't paid to keep the information private from someone who was obviously too drunk to be of use to anyone.

"There's a gang of criminals keeping Aosta cut from the rest of the western front. It started in the wake of the Kou invasion." She presses a button on the small gizmo, the spring suddenly pulling a gear into a rotation, reeling in a piece of wire along with it. Another button released the tension from the string, allowing her to pull the wire back to length, testing the mechanism several times before she took another sip of her liquor. "I don't see how you'd be able to help. You can't even help yourself stand in that state, and you certainly couldn't fight anybody in that dress. Is your intent simply to fellate these murderers into submission?"

Whatever response the drunken woman could muster, Amaya would move on with her project, attaching a knife to the end of the string, and testing the wind several more times until the other, hopefully, ran out of breath. She'd suck in a pained breath, before suddenly flinging the knife just in front of Sung-sun. "But you'd be quite a help, wouldn't you, little Dahlia." Her eyes narrowed at the girl, the steely gaze concealing a mixture of apprehension and determination. "After all, mom and dad finally let you leave the house."

The knife leapt from the counter with a whirring noise, winding back quickly to the machine that was now fastened to Amaya's wrist. "Do you remember me, Dahlia?" Her gaze relaxes, allowing the girl to peer into the face beyond the scars. "Because I remember a lot about you. I made herbal salves for you, brimming with neurotoxins that dulled the aches and pains of your training. I can at least see that they weren't put to waste after I left." She eyes the girl again, taking another sip from her liquor. "So what did you come here for? Loose ends? Business? Pleasure?" She scans the room again, trying to determine if she had brought a retainer with her. She couldn't place anyone, but her hood found itself upon her head once again, just in case.

Amaya swore again, mentally this time. It was a gamble, that was for certain, but if she needed anything, it was an ally right now. A lone woman from Kou trying to subsist in the heart of the western front? She'd be a prime target. She was confident she could deal with idiots, but anyone with substance and skill could pose a challenge. Of course, the Tan girl could also be here on things that certainly didn't concern her, and the fact that she knew her could instantly spell her death. But she knew Dahlia...somewhat, and this was a gamble she felt she needed to take.

AOIFE REIS
Well, certainly a first, she was insulted for her appearance. It took her a larger amount of integrity that she should have used to hold back a smirk, quietly entertaining the brutal repartee, and taking on the face of a woman who would be insulted by such boorish insults. She held her hand at her side, lazily clutching her staff as she leaned in closer to the woman, now so obviously intent on ignoring her.

Hmm...maybe I do…” She cooed, her body hunched forward toward the assassin near her, her free hand held at her breast as if she was keeping the fabric of her dress intact with only that hand, “No better way to subdue a man, right?” Her gaze now turned to the blue-haired woman near them, her body still hunched toward the direction of the other female. “You two know each other, eh?” Losing interest in playing a little game with the two girls, she sat back down in her seat, hoping to turn around and eavesdrop on their conversation and get a little more drunk than she was currently.

The witch observed the assassin next to her, watching as she fired off questions at the “Dahlia” girl. Dahlia eh? Must be an interesting relationship if they call each other flowers, but perhaps it was a running joke between them...inside jokes were so much fun, Aoife hoped to have them. A thought jumped into her head that these girls might be ones to have inside jokes with! Her heart fluttered with glee for but a moment, that is, until she realized they were all strangers still. Yet, there was something about the two girls that intrigued the witch, something that could lead her in the direction of her home city. A certainly delayed reaction, but necessary to defend her dignity nonetheless, commenced where Aoife would start fiddling around with magic, hoping to impress the two women (as clearly they shared a much bigger bond...which, of course, was natural--she was a stranger).

For the record…” Aoife muttered, divining a tree root to erupt from the ground of the bar, bringing a little bit of fear to the bartender and a few patrons, though most were unphased, “I’d rather fellate my enemies with this...sure I can’t help, girl?” The confidence Aoife exhibited was assuredly confident as the large tree root she summoned merely wagged around, its movements tame and controlled.

Her slur was gone, and her drunken stupor all but a distant memory, this time, a sober Aoife entered the conversation. Perhaps then someone would take her seriously, though it was nice to have fun...it’s been months since she’s been able to joke around.

Sung-Sun was shocked to learn that this woman knew who she was. She would try to scan the depths of her mind to figure out who she might have been, but it was to no avail. Her memory wasn't the best, so it only figured she would have forgotten.

"I-I can't say that I do remember you. I've met a lot of people throughout my life, so you'll need to excuse my rudeness." She would say, hanging her head low. She would begin to nervously tap her painted nails against the wooden bar, leading into a slow-beat rhythm. "You did just call me Dahlia though, that's a name that the average person wouldn't know about. Clearly you're someone of importance to my family."

Continuing to not make eye contact with Amaya, Sung-Sun would quickly alert the bartender. -- "I'd like just like a glass of water, please."

"I do remember that day, though, I think anyways." The girl would start to clear her throat, before speaking again. "I'm guessing you're the person my dad sent me out here to find. Well, I'm not really sure if he wanted me to really find you, but maybe help?" She would say a bit confused, passing the slip of paper her father had given her right to Amaya. The words on the paper said the following; "The Burning Lantern"

"I know it's not much to go by, but maybe there's an encrypted message in there I don't know about. You tell me.."

The drunkard was giving away far to much information about her capabilities, although that was purely Amaya's opinion. "I go by Lyra here. It's the name you'll get to know until I decide whether or not I trust you" She narrows her gaze at the magician. "You give away far to much about yourself without care; both of your body and of your capabilities. You'd do well to learn a thing of silence if you intend to be a true help to me." She brushes the woman's presence aside for the moment, directing her gaze back at the girl. "The same goes for you. I'm rather glad you don't remember me, as it makes my job all the easier. As for this note? This is where I stay, and where your family has been finding me for the last month." She narrows her eyes. "Your messengers need to learn when to approach someone who desires to keep their presence hidden."

With this she turns back to the (presumably irate) mage, and simply deadpans, "If you desire so desperately to be of some form of assistance, then go and speak with Astrid. Astrid is a local diviner and presumably was here when the Kou attempted to raze the city. Find out anything you can from her, if you actually stick by your words." Her gaze was sharp, condescending, and filled with an icy disdain. She had run out of her patience long before this mage arrived, and her belligerence was beginning to try Amaya. "Maybe then I'll credit you with some form of competence."

Amaya would then completely ignore the mage until she came to her own decisions about what to do. Her gaze turned back to Dahlia, a stick of charcoal falling from her wrist. She scrawled something on the back of the paper, returning it to the greenhorn. "Speak to the owner of the inn and his wife. They'll have some semblance of information concerning the same topic. I trust in your abilities enough as it is. We can talk more about your family in private, where the walls have no ears and the lights have no eyes." She nods to the girl, pulling her cloak close around her and pushing the stool away, her statement directed at both of the women. "Meet me where the garden blooms the darkest, beneath the shades of oaks."

With that, Amaya would seem to drift through the pub and out into the cold night air. If the pair could decipher the riddle, they would find her flower shop in the bazaar next to an old oak tree, "The Black Rose."

AOIFE REIS

You must be a delight at parties, Lyra.” She spat as she dismissed her spell, the roots beneath the bar slinking back into the earth from which they were conjured. She glided past her newfound critic and made eye-contact with the other woman at the bar. She scanned her up and down...quite the fit physique for someone so meek. There was certainly more to her than meets the eye, but Aoife wouldn’t press it any further. “Lyra” seemed to be fond of her and she was not in the mood in aggravating her any further. Her heels clacked into the ground as she started to walk away and leave the bar, waving her hand high in the air as her hourglass figure swayed from side to side (read: entirely intentional), catching the gaze of many males in the establishment. “Toodles!” As she left the bar, Aoife removed her hat and threw it on the ground near the bar, tying her hair up into a pony-tail before making a trip into the tavern across the street. It was where she was staying, and attempting to keep a low profile, changing into something a little less loud, but of course very slimming. Donned head to toe in what appeared to be a tight-fitting, black jumpsuit, Aoife grabbed her staff and left her room, looking to locate this “Astrid.”

A diviner, eh? They’re always such a bore. So much brooding…” She thought, musing to herself as she twirled her staff as she walked through the streets of the city. An unsettling feeling came over her, however, as sounds of the city at night were nothing like they were in Magnostadt, or Reim for that matter, and exercised just a little bit more caution when walking about. It would be very unfortunate if some ingrate male tried to grope her in the dark, especially with these clothes on. Her boots, having removed her heels, still clacked against the cobblestone streets, but this time much quieter, and with determination, as she paraded around the town. She came to an ugly building off the beaten path in town, with a sign that read “The Daughter of Styx.” Charming and a little self-aggrandizing, but nevertheless, this seemed like the place. Diviners were always so full of themselves. She entered the establishment, brushing her hands against her chest to fix her breasts (they felt a little compressed), as she walked through the door to find absolutely no business, much to her non-surprise.

Oh...hello…” She spoke, making eye contact with this “Daughter of Styx.” It was a girl, so it was definitely Astrid. She bashfully approached the woman and her table, clutching the back of the chair before she would sit down. She didn’t want to appear too confident. “Are...are you open?

The diviner merely nodded and motioned for Aoife to sit down in the chair in front of her. Aoife could not notice the woman’s eyes--they were so beautiful, so striking, as if they have seen everything. The witch made herself comfortable in the seat, crossing her legs as she propped her staff next to her on the seat, the shaft resting against her shoulder as it stayed firmly in the ground.

You come. Why?” The diviner barked. Aoife certainly didn’t expect that! But for a person to proclaim themselves with a title that sounds just as pretentious as it seems, that was to be expected.

And here I thought you’d already know!” Aoife mused, laughing. When the diviner did not find her joke funny, she immediately suspended laughter, and this time leaned forward, now attempting to adopt a more serious tone. “Erm, well, I’m supposed to be on my way home, it’s not far from here but those pesky guards won’t let me through. Something about “Aosta,” do you know what’s going on? I’d try for more practical methods but all I’ve got is a big pile of poo. So, here I am, asking you, “Daughter of Styx,” for your help. Do you know anything?

The diviner rolled her eyes and said nothing. There was a long, very uncomfortable period of silence between them. It was as if they were having a contest of who would speak next. Even though Aoife asked a question. Confused, Aoife opened her mouth and motioned her hands, hoping that would prompt the woman to speak.

Huang.” The diviner quipped, and held out her hand. Aoife rolled her eyes and threw a bag of huang onto the table, clearly upset with the woman’s shady tactics. And this is why she hates diviners. “The city was attacked by the Kou. Fire everywhere. There is lockdown on this city to prevent more fire. Simple. What else?”

Sheesh. This woman wasted no time. Still, this intrigued Aoife. Perhaps this Lyra was more interesting than she lets on. So, being the woman that she is, she decided to dive into interrogating the diviner.

My word...I had no idea. Is this city in danger too?” She asked, her hand moving toward Astrid on the table. Astrid pulled her hand back and placed it on her lap, shooting Aoife a disapproving look before speaking again.

No...yes. These forces, these people, they are not good. They are evil. Full of hate. They lust for revenge. If you value your life, girl, stop asking questions.” The diviner’s tone was more than serious enough for Aoife to feel a little bit of worry. What was it about this that scared the diviner so much? It would make no sense why she’d be so reluctant to share information, unless…

You know something...don’t you? What aren’t you telling me?” She asked, this time her free hand clutching her staff in case any trouble should arise. The diviner pacified the young witch’s nervousness with a simple remark.

Yes. I am not your enemy, do not fret. I...I see sadness in your future. I see death. But you must follow this path...I…” Astrid stammered, her body mildly convulsing as she spoke to the witch. Aoife stood up in amazement (and horror) as the diviner apparently broke. “Black Rose.

Black Rose?” She asked. Confused at her sudden return to reality.

Flower. Find it. Take what you know.” No sooner did she relay the message did she flee from the table, leaving Aoife alone in the room. Not wishing to stay any longer in this place, and certainly feeling an even more powerful sense of dread, she left, with “Black Rose” in mind. The young witch walked through the city, looking for any trace of Black Rose, until she returned to the town center where the remnants of the marketplace were left until daylight. Beneath an old oak tree, she saw the phrase. “The Black Rose.”

I suppose this is it…” She said to herself, swallowing her anxiety as she opened the mysteriously unlocked door of the venue...
