Xinzheng, the city which Gao Yuan Zu had publicly appeared and declared his rebellion. This was a city that had been built with natural defenses in mind; a mountainous region nearby the Shu-Fang river's mountain range. The city itself was surrounded on 3 sides by the mountains, though there was still some space around the city for fields, with a forest on the east side, meeting with the mountainside to the east of the city. The only known way in or out of the city was the road to the north.

North of the city of Xinzheng.

There were many military camps set up; Gao Yuan Zu had declared a state of rebellion. Although the man himself was no longer known to officially be in Xinzheng, as he was supposedly busy with other cities, this city became a military camp for many soldiers and recruits.

One such bustling camp belonged to that of the Fang Mercenary's Young Master, Fang Vardreth.

"Oi! Shape up! Move in step!" The young man shouted towards some new recruits. They weren't actually a part of his unit, but new recruits being trained how to fight in an army. They were currently being taught marching techniques, one of the basics of military foundations. Grunting, Vardreth turned towards one of his mercenary subordinates. "I'll leave the rest to you for now. I'm waiting for a report from Benai regarding our primary task." They were asked to survey the surrounding mountains for any passes that an army could use. While there were no known entrances, the lay of the land could become a critical deciding factor in their military strategy.

Vardreth walked towards the north end of the camp - several desks were set up nearby where clerks from Gao Yuan Zu's army were situated. It was here that Benai would report, although it was also here where many groups of people would appear to sign up for the war effort. Vardreth stood a short distance of a meter or so behind the clerks and watched the newcomers with a slight degree of interest, though he couldn't help but let off an aura of confidence which was bordering upon arrogance.

As soon as Adrastos arrived in Kou, he sent the few men he had brought with him out for surveillance, leaving him and Nox to go about their own business. For days the magician wandered and gathered intel about the situation developing within the country. Eventually, the duo heard about the city of Xinzheng, the city where the rebellion first began according to rumors. Information from the Shadow Puppets revealed that the only entrance was from the north and numerous camps were spotted about the roadside outside the Xinzheng’s sole entryway. These camps were, from what he was told, recruitment camps for Emperor Gao Yuan Zu’s ever growing army. They also doubled as security, ensuring to some degree the identity of those who entered. If Adrastos were to have a chance to at least meet with the true emperor of Kou, those camps were his only hope.

The magician, wearing a white and blue Kou hanfu, travelled there with one of his Shadow Leaders, Nox, wearing his raven robe and pale mask. With his very eyes, Adrastos witnessed the bustling men and women as they went about their duties while voices yelled at them to quicken their pace.

“Quite a lively collection of individuals, wouldn’t you say?” Nox barely signalled a response, but Adrastos knew that his silent companion agreed with him. His silver eyes scanned the camps within his line of sight, deliberating what his next course of action should be. Adrastos had picked out one of the camps and approached the recruitment post of it. He inhaled for a brief moment before letting loose words he would be unable to take back.

“You’ve put together quite an assembly of troops, however I’d wager you’ll be needing a bit more help on this side of the coming war! I’m willing to offer my assistance, but only to Emperor Gao Yuan Zu or any acquaintances of his that may be among you! Those will be the only individuals that I will speak with. Anybody else is just a waste of precious time on both ends!”

Two of the clerks working at the recruitment desk looked at each other briefly before one of them turned back to Adrastos. "C-Certainly. There are a couple of things you must do to go about that... The first of which is filling out this form." There weren't many who approached them that were capable commander-level material. In the first place, it was difficult to become a truly powerful figure, so statistically speaking there were far more weaker individuals than there were strong individuals. The number of individuals that boasted beyond their capabilities were also numerous.

Even so, the recruiters did not want to take any chances. At least they would allow the man to fill out the form, and from there it would be up to him in order to perform well enough to catch the eye of a member of the leadership. "After that... You would have to obtain the approval of one of the Generals in order to get the final endorsement..."

The form itself wasn't terribly long to fill out. A general questionnaire was presented on who the applicant is, why they want to join, and what they are capable of. If the form was to get an idea of the individual applying, then the approval of one of the Generals was the 'test' of skill for those looking to obtain a direct position in the upper ends of the war effort's echelon. Up front there would not be much looking into things, however there was a certain level of danger for those who attempted to infiltrate into the upper echelons with ill intent. At a certain level, Gao Yuan Zu was sure to have stricter background checks performed on those who obtained standing within his army.

Vardreth stared at Adrastos, as if measuring the Magician's capabilities. If Adrastos completed the forms, Vardreth would then step forward, interjecting himself in the space behind the desk that was between the two recruiters. "I can cut down some of that red tape. Save you the time of finding a General capable of granting an endorsement... If you're as good as you say you are, that is." There was something about the man that stood before Vardreth that gave him a strange vibe. He couldn't shake the feeling.

The magician cast an icy stare towards the clerks that spoke to him about forms and approval, clearly uninterested in the recruitment camp’s sluggish protocols. He wasn’t thrilled about giving any written information about himself, no matter how small, and thought that writing down his skills was just adding on the amount of time wasted. Here he had to speak with clerks and go through a screening process when he had just said that anyone other than the Emperor or his acquaintances would be misuse of time. Deep down he understood the importance of their procedures. After all, there must have been many individuals that waltzed right on in to claim their own importance or power without evidence to back their allegations, but the silver-haired magician was not one of those people.

He was the one to assist in splitting apart the Reim government and kidnapping of Councilor Roark to prove himself worthy of the Alchemists and Brotherhood of Ash, he had killed the lives of innocents to test his own power, framed a politician in Balbadd  for accepting bribe money from Emperor Yoshiro, who had been blamed for the massacre of numerous families by rogue Kou soldiers because he had turned a blind eye, implanted his own pawns within the Balbadd cabinet so that he could control the country, and controlled one hundred Shadow Puppets as the Shadow Master that would do whatever he'd command. Adrastos may have been just a magician, but he had come far, too far to be stalled by meaningless paper and tedious procedures.

Adrastos, however, maintained his neutral and cold demeanor as he continued to gaze at the two clerks before him. “Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough,” he hissed, “but what else is to be expected from disposable puppets?” He had half a mind to signal Nox to flip the table or perhaps torment the clerks, but a young man, Vardreth, caught the magician’s attention. A young man could have been an understatement considering the eyes Adrastos stared into belonged to a boy still in his teens. Despite that, the teenager carried an aura of authority and power that was not to be prematurely challenged. They were studying each other, measuring the other's capabilities.

“Good evening to you,” he mused with lips curled in a thin smile. “It seems we’ve caught each other’s interest. Perhaps you could make this process run more swiftly seeing as how I’m not a man of patience regarding dreary obligations.”

Vardreth's eyes widened in surprise when Adrastos blatantly disregarded the forms. In his heart he sneered at the newcomer before him. So, he thinks he can skip the paperwork just as easy as that, huh? Well, let's see just how good he really is... Vardreth stepped backwards a few steps, clearing himself from between the recruiters, before walking out from behind the desk and towards a clear field. Before he completely cleared the desk, within earshot of the recruiters, Vardreth turned his head and spoke to Adrastos. "Come, then. So long as you show a decent amount of worth to Your Father, I, then he will vouch for you. But don't go around thinking you can stay anonymous forever." With that said, Vardreth pulled his blade out and lazily rested the dull edge of the sword upon his shoulder before turning his head back to the front and walking forward.

Though the young mercenary leader had opened his back to Adrastos, he would not be vulnerable to a sneak attack. Although the draw and subsequent resting of the blade seemed to lend an air of arrogance and disregard to Adrastos it had allowed Vardreth the opportunity to use the reflective surface of the blade to watch the other man's actions. If one had particularly keen eyes, they may be able to see the reflection of the blade showing Vardreth's seemingly indifferent eyes gazing into back at them. Fifty meters away, the two would find themselves in a flat landscape. The grass swayed as a valley breeze blew towards the slopes of the distant-yet-near mountains. There was enough room for a crowd to spectate, however the discipline of the lines and recruitment centers did not easily forgive people for wandering off. Even so, those in line would be able to spectate the fight if it were to occur where Vardreth was standing.

To Vardreth’s left was a treeline, which he would lead Adrastos into if the newcomer requested discretion. The trees were fairly thick, some of the smaller ones being a meter wide while some of the wider ones closer to three meters. On the exterior of the forest it was the former that were most numerous. A twenty meter depth into that forest would block peering eyes from observing the battle.

Items Brought:

Adrastos nodded toward Vardreth in understanding as the young warrior walked away. The magician turned toward Nox with an outstretched hand so that his comrade could give him a few items. Adrastos had to be careful since wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the teenager, so as a precaution, the magician slipped on three rings on this right hand: the Dantalis Serpent, a dehydration magic item from Dantalion’s dungeon, the Grim Reaper, an animation ring, and the Ring of Erosion, a acid magic imbued item he came across in a marketplace. With that done, Adrastos approached Vardreth, studying the field he stood in.

The area was spacious, but there were too many eyes that could watch. The magician disliked the idea of having an audience that consisted of men and women whom he didn’t know and trust. Any one of them could potentially turn traitor at the last minute. Adrastos shook his head, “This won’t do. I’d prefer to be in a location a bit more private than here.”

Once in a more secure location, he signalled Nox to put some distance between them while making sure he kept watch. After a few moments of silence, Adrastos spoke, “I only remain anonymous to those I don’t know or can’t trust. I have a sort of image to uphold when it comes to the public eye because I’d rather not have a giant target painted on my back just yet. Perhaps you might understand.” He cleared his throat. “How do you want to go about this?”

Vardreth had expected the man before him to have acted out earlier. Instead, he had patiently held out and followed Vardreth. ... Huh. He withstood my provocation. When Vardreth was advised that the newcomer did not want his capabilities seen by others the two had went into the forest and Vardreth had a better understanding of his opponent. There was a saying; conceal oneself to look like a pig in order to eat the tiger. Hiding your strengths could give you the opportunity to defeat opponents due to their lack of vigilance. Or perhaps he has some strength, but personal opponents are still stronger than him and so he hides it in order to overwhelm them once he becomes strong enough? And then there is the other man...

There was a certain sense of strength coming from the follower that this newcomer had with him... But it still wasn't enough to mark high on his sight! Vardreth temporarily put the person out of his mind as he refocused on Adrastos. They were silent for a moment before Adrastos broke the silence with an explanation on his actions to this point. Ah, likely the second of those two actions, if his words are to be taken as truth. When Adrastos asked Vardreth of what the test would entail, Vardreth spoke. "You have three attacks to impress me. I will grade based on strength and accuracy. If you don't manage to show me the level of strength that grants you your arrogance, well, I don't think I have much more to say. Humph." There would be an unceremonious rejection of any who had decided to waste his time with this kind of attitude. However the victor was King and the loser was the thief - if the person had the strength to be arrogant, then that was to be expected!

"Come, then, whenever you are ready!" Vardreth stood in a fairly open stance, ready for Adrastos to attack. He also kept his senses strained for any attacks from people other than Adrastos... After all, this anonymous fellow might not be here for what he said he was here for!

Three attacks. That’s all that would be allowed for the blue magician to prove himself. He had to make them count. Right off the bat, Adrastos knew which spells he would cast, and he wasted no time. As soon as Vardreth welcomed Adrastos to attack, he fed magoi into his ring to cast Call of the Dead, causing any corpses to rise from the ground. He cast Call of the Dead two more times for a total of twelve undead to command. The magician pointed his wand at Vardreth, “Attack.” As the undead rushed toward Vardreth, Adrastos pointed his wand in the air while feeding magoi into his wand to cast Shadow Realm, a spell consisting of a dome of darkness that enveloped a 15m diameter and 10m high with Adrastos at its center. With it, he could sense the location of any individual inside. He whispered softly to the rukh, “Black Death.” Though it could not be seen, a black mist would spew from his wand toward the location of Vardreth and the undead minions, encompassing a 2m area.

It would be interesting to see, or find out rather, what Vardreth would do, but the magician didn’t doubt for a second that the young warrior couldn’t find a way out of this. He was well gifted and pretty smart after all, a young prodigy by the looks of it. Adrastos just hoped this would prove himself worthy.

He had worked towards preparing to intercept his opponent's 'attack' and subsequently defeat it, however a sudden shroud of darkness expanded from his opponent. His heart skipped a beat, as he had no way of seeing anything from within the blackout.

Immediately a sense of danger overcame Vardreth. The warrior used his inhuman speed to dash backwards while simultaneously summoning twelve Sprites with the help of a magical ring he had won in a gambling match back in his days of the Shu-Fang Military Academy. Vardreth didn't stop there - using those magical creatures as a shield that allowed him a sense of what was coming, while simultaneously fighting off his opponent's summons, Vardreth would detect their deaths and measure his level of danger based off of that.

As he was jumping back, the warrior noticed many had died simultaneously. A grave look pasted itself upon his face as he activated another magical ring of his, causing a thick layer of ice to form around himself. Soon enough the thick layer of ice was covered in a mist - Vardreth still could not see, however at the time he had flash-frozen himself he was close to the edge of the darkness. The mist did its best to invade the ice, however it had to spend the entirety of its energy just to enter it. The protective layer of ice cracked due to the invasion, splintering and shattering apart, whereby Vardreth continue to move in order to escape the dark shroud. "Enough! Your s-s-strength passes!" Vardreth's body was shivering and his teeth were chattering due to the chill.

He was well aware of the strength required to break that protective ice. The magical ring that was capable of this was a ring he had gotten from the man who wanted to renege on the gambling match in which he had won the first ring. Vardreth recalled how much effort he had to expend to kill the man. The first ring alone was not worth that much effort, however the overall spoils were.

Adrastos couldn’t see what was going on inside his dark dome but his hearing was not affected. The blue magician was proud to hear Vardreth’s words through his shivering and ceased his spells immediately. He slipped his wand into his robes while Nox made his way toward his master as silver eyes gazed at the shivering warrior. The magician’s strength had passed, but that was about it. What else was there to prove? His loyalty? His intention? How much longer until he could meet the Emperor Gao Yuan Zu, or at least be trusted within the ranks so he could climb up himself.

“Just my strength,” he murmured. “What else will I need to prove?” If Vardreth interrogated Adrastos, he’d give responses that would dance around the truth just enough for him to sound believable without revealing too much. Of course, there was a saying that trust went both ways, but Adrastos didn’t want that sort of trust, not the one where it consisted of him revealing his true self and operations.

Vardreth continued to shiver, his goosebumps refusing to recede. His strength is top tier, and he's a magician to boot. Those types are difficult to deal with. In truth, Vardreth hadn't fought many Magicians in the past and was inexperienced in those types of fights. The small tricks that could barely harm novices did not concern him, however those with true magical strength had power beyond reproach. At the very least they deserved some respect. "I didn't realize we had an esteemed Magician joining the forces."

An excuse towards his brash provocations earlier.

Even so, Vardreth had a strong level of self-pride. He refused to provide a straight apology for his actions. "You don't seem to be the type that wants to fight out on the battlefield... Though I am sure you would have a good level of effectiveness there, to a degree." Vardreth spoke in a measured cadence, navigating the words so his shivering did not interfere with his communication. As he continued to speak, he continued to narrow down on the pauses until they disappeared. From what you said earlier, and your actions up to this point, you dislike being visible to the public. There are only a few questions I want the answer to." Vardreth voiced his deduction of the situation so far. He was seventy percent certain that he was correct in his conjecture, however it was also true that one could not say for certain what another was thinking while knowing little to nothing of that person's inner workings.

Vardreth began to succinctly state the questions he wished to know the answers to. "Let us start with the name you go by." Vardreth intentionally left the question ambiguous. He knew that if the person wanted to lie about his name there was nothing Vardreth would be able to do about it and no way for Vardreth to actually know. "Next, what is the reason you have decided to join the efforts of Emperor Gao Yuan Zu to retake Kou?" If the first question was to get a sense of identity of the man before him, the second question was to get a sense of purpose to the man's presence. A lot could be told from what a person said, and even more from what they left out. "Lastly, what is your specialty, or rather what type of role do you wish to fulfill while working for Emperor Gao Yuan Zu?"

The third question was arguably the most important of the three. The first two could be answered dishonestly with few backlashes, however the last one would have an impact on where he was placed. It was said that birds of a feather flock together - in this case, a certain degree of personality, ambition and intention could be garnered based off of this final question. Especially so when used in conjunction with the answers to the previous two questions.

To this point, Vardreth still hadn't said a word about himself.

As expected, the young warrior questioned Adrastos, but only voiced three seemingly simple inquiries. Vardreth was smart and very cunning, the magician would give him that much. The warrior had a good idea that the magician had no desire to be known to the public, and he asked some rather obscure questions. The questions were vague, but each would allow Vardreth to obtain information on who Adrastos was as an individual. The first was what name he was called, however Adrastos had quite a few aliases. He had his real name, Adrastos Thanatos, his normal alias, Neo Mortem, his Alchemist name, Kareem, and his back-up alias, Sullivan. So many names to remember and keep up with. Adrastos glanced at Nox then back to Vardreth. “I am Neo.” A simple answer for a simple question. “My reason for joining Emperor Gao Yuan Zu’s side is simply that I dislike Yoshiro and the direction he is taking this country. This civil war is also an ample opportunity to test my skills further or develop new ones.” Another simple answer, though this wasn’t exactly a lie like his previous response. He omitted the parts where he thought Kou would be better off without Yoshiro as its ruler, how the conflict would only produce further chaos in order for him to do whatever he needed or wanted to do, how Emperor Gao Yuan Zu was almost like an idol to the magician, and how Adrastos felt the situation could offer more power to him.

The final question was the ultimate test. How was Adrastos suppose to answer this? He bowed his head slightly. He didn’t want to be with the rabble, but he knew the chances of him being with the Emperor were very slim. “I will serve whatever role the Emperor wishes me to perform so long as it is befitting my skill and capabilities.”

The answer Adrastos gave was probably the best one he could have given. It wasn’t his place to demand a role or even decide his role when there were others who were, much to the magician’s distaste, much more powerful in both skill and authority.

From his pocket, he grabbed a small bag containing onigiri to eat and replenish his magoi. He ate neatly, almost like a noble, despite having been raised in the slums so long ago.

Vardreth listened carefully to the newcomer's words, analyzing them and attempting to root out possibilities. Hmm. He only provided a single name. No surname... Or perhaps he is implying 'Neo' is his surname..? Vardreth continued to listen. Taking a step back, he determined the intent behind Neo's search for recruitment seemed to be believable enough. If his strength was weaker, perhaps the stage of a new recruit, the first reason he provided would have been enough... But anyone with the ambition and desire to become as strong as he currently is would have a hard time passing just that as their sole reason for joining... Many with strength wish to test their skills and temper them by fighting against others of strength.

Truthfully, Vardreth understood that while the weaker recruits would cite the first reason as their reason for joining, many soldiers joined as a way to earn a source of income. That wasn't just to say that they would do so at any time. A true crisis would need to be present for war to truly break out for there to be such a large drive for soldiers being recruited.

When it came to the final question, Vardreth narrowed his eyes. Is he intentionally concealing his motive, or is he genuinely uninterested in his role... The answer did not provide very much light on Neo's intentions. It was, perhaps, the safest answer that could be given. Vardreth sighed internally, shrugging his shoulders. "To my knowledge, Emperor Gao Yuan Zu is not here at this time. I'll have a letter of recommendation sent on your behalf, and the emperor will determine how to handle it moving forward. I'm sure you understand that our short confrontation did not test the extent of your capabilities, which is why I asked what type of role you would like to have... Either way, you'll be able to discuss that further in the future."

Vardreth then looked towards the other man who was with Neo. "Since he is with you, he'll need to make sure to put his information in as well. Try not to skulk around the Emperor, either. His personal guards are a bit touchy about that kind of stuff... Ah, and for the time being you can use my camp to rest within until you hear back." Vardreth motioned towards the direction of the camp and began walking towards it.

Adrastos was disappointed that Emperor Gao Yuan Zu wasn’t nearby and that a letter of recommendation would be sent, but there wasn’t a whole lot he could do to speed up the process. He did, however, understand what Vardreth said for the most part. He bowed his head, “I understand. I’ll make sure my companion fills out the appropriate paperwork and keep him on his leash. Thank you for the offer to stay in your camp.” The magician followed Vardreth back to camp, only stopping to fill out the paperwork that Adrastos loathed so much.

His silver eyes scanned the necessary information before grabbing a pen to write while his companion did the same. Adrastos proceeded to fill the form out, including a basic description of his subordinate which included a name, that he worked for ‘Neo Mortem’, and that the capacity he did so under was as an intelligence agent.

“Where exactly will I be staying? If you just point me in the direction, I’ll head there. There’s just one thing bothering me: Who are you? Or rather, what should I call you?” Adrastos had never gotten the teenager’s name despite giving him his, even if it was an alias. He knew nothing about this man and found it annoying to know so little about an individual.  He may have had his reasons for remaining anonymous, but he couldn’t stay that way. Not forever.

Vardreth was about to point the way when Adrastos spoke the second part of his question. Immediately the warrior blinked twice in succession. "Ah. Right. You haven't heard of me? I am Fang Vardreth, of the Fang Mercenaries! Like Kou custom, Fang is the surname and Vardreth is the given." Vardreth proudly declared his name and the name of his unit. The pride did not come with a silly flourish or look upon his face; it was deep rooted and serious in nature. His father's mercenary company was something he looked at as his lifeblood. Despite his eyes being on top of his head and not seeing others as his equal, Vardreth had a genuine love for the company of mercenaries and the work they did. It was something he had grown up with, and it was the only life he truly knew.

"I was scouted by Emperor Gao Yuan Zu shortly before the rebellion took place. It was a stroke of luck that I found an employer right before my band left the Kou region... Ah, as for what you can call me... Captain Fang or Vardreth. You have the strength to qualify in addressing me by my given name." The victor was the king and the loser the thief. In other words, might made right in Vardreth's mind. The strong were to be respected, and while he had confidence that the magician wouldn't be able to kill him, the Mercenary Leader did not have the confidence to kill the magician without expending great amount of effort. And even then, in that kind of battle, he could die.

Magic was an area that the man was woefully not knowledgeable regarding. There were certainly military tactics that were dedicated to dealing with and having magicians to work with you, but the number, scale and variety of techniques that could be employed by them were truly uncountable. It was only limited by their creativity and talent, or so he had been taught. "As for living conditions, you'll enjoy the amenities of a ranking Commander, and you may stay in one of the central tents over there." Vardreth pointed in the direction of the tents he was speaking of, which were located in the center of the camp. "You may have your person speak to my people and they will make sure you are set up. If you need anything, you'll have a scribe and messenger at your beck and call who can get your necessities fulfilled..."

“Unfortunately no. I’ve been travelling since I left my magician teacher a few years ago,” he said, noticing how proud Vardreth was with his name and his unit. Adrastos couldn’t be too proud of his name, or rather didn’t see the point. Any pride he felt in the Shadow League was slim, and definitely wasn’t something he wanted plastered all over the world.

Upon hearing that he would enjoy the accommodations of a ranking Commander, Adrastos was pleased. He didn’t have to mingle with the rabble, and it probably meant a bit more privacy as well. “Thank you, Vardreth, I’ll be sure to do that. Perhaps we’ll speak again later”

The magician waved as he walked away with Nox to make sure everything would be set up appropriately. Afterall, it would probably be awhile before Adrastos received word from Emperor Gao Yuan Zu.
