Hannah stood on a bank of a narrow river that cut through the mountains and eventually made its home to a lake right outside of the capital city of Kou. For some reason or another she had notice that the ruhk was pulling her towards this direction, for what reason she was not blessed to know but she could not fight the flow of destiny anymore than the next person. She had been traveling the country of Kou alone now for about a month or two now, her family’s village was a bit away from where she currently was now but after she had learned some magic to cure her dad or earned enough money to pay for the medication he needed. So far she had only really had a grasp on wind magic but she was bound and determined to learn new magic so that she could do more in the world. She was rather nervous about being so close to the capital after hearing the rumors about what was going on up there, they said that civil war was close to breaking out.

Hannah had even heard rumors that the army and some nearby villagers had gotten into an altercation to the point that many civilians died and even a number of the country’s soldiers. Hannah had never had much grief with the government other than the fact that they made the medicine prices so high that it was hard for her family to afford the cost of medication that they needed for her father. Other than that she had no problem with the current government. She knew little of the politics that were going on but she felt that sooner or later all citizens of the Kou empire would know.

There was a couple of smaller villages dotted around the capital’s radius, these were mainly suburbs or farming villages that provided the capital with the resources that a place with such a large population needed. Hannah had only been in this region a few times in her life and the last time that she had came here was a long time ago so she was rather unfamiliar with the terrain. This river was bound to run past at least one or two of the villages so she knew that if she continued to follow it she would eventually find some place to rest. Worse case scenario she would just camp outside again, she was used to it after all by now.

As she stood on the bank of the river her staff laid on the ground by her feet. She shuffled through the rocks around the water’s edge looking for the flattest and smoothest one so that she may skip it across the water like she used to do when she was a small girl. After finding one she felt was perfect she stood up and lined the rock in her hand. With all her might she threw the rock across the water watching it skip three times before sinking beneath the water’s surface. The face that was just a moment prior pure joy quickly faded into disappointment.

“Well damn, I was expecting more than just a few skips.” “Yea that was kind of a pathetic throw there.” The new voice right behind Hannah caused her to jump in fear. As she came down she landed right on her butt. She rubbed her tosh and looked up to see who was the one that spoke behind her. “Who..who are the hell are you? Sneaking up on people like that is just rude!” The figure was in fact a young woman, probably in her mid to late twenties. “Well that’s not the language one would expect from such a young lady, did your parents not teach you how to be polite and respect people?” The woman was giggling as she scolded Hannah causing Hannah to get mad. “My parents did teach me manners! Obviously yours didn’t since you are sneaking up on people when they are caught in their thoughts!” The lady tilted her head in curiosity before bursting out laughing. “You’ve got spunk kid, I’ll give you that! Are you a magician? Or is that just some fancy walking stick?” Hannah quickly grabbed her staff and aimed it at this woman that appeared, she was ready to strike at this stranger just in case the reason she was here was to harm Hannah.

“Woah woah little mage, Don’t cha know we are in the midst of a civil war? Aiming a weapon so carelessly could get you in a hep of trouble if its at the wrong person. I just spotted you as I was flying by and spotted you skipping rocks out here by your lonesome. I figured I’d come and see what was up, plus I saw Yoshiro’s forces patrolling the area nearby, you might want to be careful. They’ve been attacking citizens left and right just in case they’ve allied themselves with the old emperor. You’re a sitting duck out here by yourself, I could always keep you company you know?”

“They’re really going around attacking innocent citizens? That’s just horrible, all those poor people that can’t defend themselves.” Hannah stood up and brushed off the dirt that had gotten on her butt from the fall. Hannah had no idea that the army was patrolling the area attacking people. It made sense though, they were so close to the capital that an increase in patrols was an obvious occurrence. “Is there really a patrol unit nearby?” The lady just nodded her head. “Yep, and no offense kiddo but judging by the ruhk flowing off of you, you wouldn’t last very long in a skirmish against them. Chances are they’d take your staff and either throw you in jail or slap a high fine on ya.” “You can see my ruhk? Are you by chance a magician as well? Wait…you said you were flying? That means you can use strength magic can’t you?!” Hannah was now more intrigued by this stranger than scared or mad. If she was a fellow magician then Hannah could learn from her, strength magic would allow her to use gravity magic and she could fly from town to town instead of walking. That would cut down the time it took her to get places drastically and she could avoid the troops of the war. “Do you think you could teach me some strength magic?”

“Well I’d love to teach you something but I think that those guys over there might want something from us. Maybe if you can get rid of some of them the rest will tuck tail and run. I’m sure you can manage to take out a couple right? In fact I’ll even give you a handicap over them.” From inside her robe a simple wooden wand popped out. “Pause!” A black bubble surrounded five of the warriors and suspended them in mid air. “Well that’s the only handicap I’m giving you. Now you just have three to deal with. Hop to!”

“Their magicians! Don’t let them cast their magic! If we can press them they will be at a disadvantage!” Hannah was shocked that stranger was able to subdue several soliders at once, that was something Hannah could only dream of doing. There was no time to daydream though the government’s soliders were charging straight at her. She held her staff out and screamed her strongest spell out. ”Gale Blast!” The wind rippled from her staff and right towards the group of three men. As it traveled through the space the men help up a sword that was glowing a red color. They made a slashing motion causing it to clash with her wind magic creating a powerful gust of wind.

“Ugh what the heck?! Why are you guys attacking us?” The men kept charging so Hannah started to bounce backwards quickly though she was getting close to the water’s edge again. If she was not careful she was going to fall right in and be swept up by the current. “For the Emperor! You civilians will bend the knee whether you like it or not! We will have you in shackles by the end of the day, even if you are crafty mages!” Tsk, these guys are targeting me for no reason, just like those poor other citizens. I guess I’m getting dragged into this dumb war even if I don’t to. I have no choice I’ll blind them and then launch a few spells. It seems that they have magic tools though, I wasn’t aware that common soldiers were given such rare items. Hannah stopped jumping back and instead charged the men while yelling the name of her next two spells simultaneously.   “Dust Cloud! Double Jump!”

She slammed her staff on the ground causing a giant cloud of dust to surround the entire area. As the cloud spread across the area Hannah was launched high into the air above the group of soldiers. From this location she had the advantage against the men. She was aiming to fall right into the middle of the three men, though she could not see them due to the dust cloud she knew that they were still in there and this next spell of her’s should hit them regardless. As she fell into the cloud she poured magoi into her staff, more magoi than she was accustomed when using this spell, she was boosting it to the amount that should take care of these jerks. As her staff slammed into the ground she shouted as loud as she could. ”Shredding stance!” The wind ripped around her and started to circulate at such a high speed and force that it would rip to shred anything that was within its radius.

The wind whipped and howled and as the dust cloud settled Hannah saw two men laying face down on the ground but the third one with the magic tool was standing there in a defensive stance. Hmm, can I take this guy on alone? He’s been able to block all my attacks and that last one took a huge chunk of my magoi. I’ll have to some conserving from this point onward She as she aimed her staff at the man and was about to utilize a spell to blast him into the air the man collapsed to one knee. “You’ll have to face your crimes in court. I’ll remember your face…both you magician’s faces. His Royal Highness will know of your traitorous ways.” The man fell to the ground his eyes closed, Hannah did not think that he was dead but he must have used a high amount of magoi or stamina to block all those attacks, he was probably depleted of all his energy.
