Job details:

Garret slept well into the morning, and though he slept well his senses were on high alert for any attacks during the night. When he awoke, it had felt as if a long time had passed. Garret poked at the fire they had camped by, making sure its ashes were well cold before spreading some dirt on top of it; the dirt would put out most of the chances for a random ember causing a forest fire.

Cracking his neck, the magician looked over to the child who had joined him on this adventure. I will need to continue to hide my magical skills from him... But my training has made me more than capable of handling myself, even without my magic. The feeling of the shield on his back, swords at his side, chain draped across his body and throwing needles hidden across his clothing gave Garret a sense of comfort.

The child was just as Garret remembered him from the prior night, and nothing was out of the ordinary at all. "I'll be heading out shortly. Are you still intending to follow?" He spoke with a fairly loud tone; his intention was to use those words to wake the Fanalis up. If that didn't wake Diego up, Garret would just leave without him.

The prepubescent beast tamer awoke to the sound of someone shuffling around in camp. Diego's first thought was that one of the Black Crows had infiltrated their camp and his eyes snapped open. He managed a small smile to see Trixie and Zanzibar curled against him as they slept peacefully, but it faded when he heard more movement behind him. In one quick motion, Diego rolled over, reached for his bow nearby, and strung an arrow. He aimed it at the intruder, ready for a fight, but stopped short when he noticed Garret.

Exhaling in relief, Diego relaxed and shook his head. In his panic, he had forgotten about the stranger he had come across the day before. "You startled me." Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Diego stood up, nudging his beast companions with his foot. While they woke up and stretched out, he began gathering his gear. His bow, Determination, and his quiver of arrows were strapped over one shoulder, while Razorwing was split into two pieces, resembling daggers, and sheathed on either hip.

Once he was done, Diego scrounged through his pack for a package of dried meats. He tossed a few pieces to Trixie and Zanzibar before taking some for himself. Not wanting to be impolite, Diego offered Garret a few strips of jerky and then wrapped the rest up, saving it for later. Ripping off a piece of the tough meat with his teeth, Diego slung his pack over his other shoulder and nodded to Garret. "Of course I'm joining you. I want to see this to the end."

After everyone had a chance to eat, Diego signaled to the mysterious man that he was ready. Checking the map they had found the previous night, which displayed the next Black Crow encampment, Diego gathered his bearings and suggested a travel path. Regardless of whether Garret decided to use his suggestion or not, Diego would follow him.

Garret looked towards the strips of jerky with veiled suspicion. "I will eat this while we walk..." He accepted the food and watched as the beast tamer and his pets ate them themselves. While he had a tolerance for some poison, it was not something that would stand up against an alchemist who put any sort of effort into refining the strength of their concoction. After a few moments passed, with Garret spending time finishing cleaning up the rest of the camp and glancing the beast's way, he was sufficiently confident that he could eat without worry.

It was at this moment that the child signaled to Garret that they were ready, and brought out a map. The child suggested a route for the two of them to take and, after looking at the map for a bit, Garret had determined that the route was just fine. It seemed that the young child was insistent on following the blue magician, even though the boy was the one who had suggested the route, and so the two set out.

As they did so, Garret began checking the placement of some of his weapons. The two blades were resting on his left, a dagger on his bandolier, and hidden throwing knives in the shape of needles were stored discretely upon his person. He kneeled down and fiddled with his shoes for a brief moment, pretending to check them; in reality, the movements allowed him to confirm the location of several of his hidden weapons.

Garret pulled out one of his stealthy weapons, Agha, a chain with a spike on one end and a weighted ball on the other. Swinging it, he latched onto a sturdy tree branch and climbed his way up. "If your beasts can follow, let us take the route from above. There is less chance for us to be seen. If not, I will keep an eye out for enemies and use a bird call to warn you. One note is enemy sighted, and two will be enemy approaching."

Garret would try to answer any questions Diego had, and requested the boy keep the number of codes to a minimum as they would not really have time to set up many of them. Once that was done, Garret would again lead the beast master through the woods while doing his very best to silently stalk from treetop to treetop.

Not long after they set out for the Black Crow's Stronghold, the mysterious warrior who accompanied Diego came to a halt. Curious, the young boy did the same, gesturing for Zanizbar and Trixie to heel at his side. He watched as the man produced a long chain from his person, just one of the many weapons he carried. Using the weighted ball attached to one end of the chain, Garret swung it around a branch and pulled himself up.

Trixie nuzzled against Diego as Garret shimmied up the tree, "What is he doing?' Her words would only be heard by the Fanalis through his Wildman's Charm

Diego shrugged his shoulders, "I'm not sure..." He replied while reaching down to run his fingers through the tigress' fur.

Garret's voice rang out from above as he called down to the Fanalis boy and suggested that they traverse through the treetops. Diego grinned when he understood the plan, realizing that it was an effective way to get close to the stronghold without being spotted. Most guards would be focused on watching the approaches to the facility from the ground, not taking the time to look through the leaf-littered canopy.

Diego looked down at his orange-fur covered hand and the long, sharp claws that protruded from his finger tips. He then turned back to the tree, searching for the easiest path to climb up it. Before he did so, he used his Wildman's charm to relay orders to his beasts. "He intends for the two of us to take the high road. Trixie, take Zanz with you and scout ahead of us. If you see anything, report back to me before attacking, if you can."

"I shall, Diego." Trixie replied before gripping one of Zanzibar's legs in her teeth, lightly, and threw him onto her back. She took off in the direction of the Stronghold, intent on fulfilling the Fanalis' orders.

Diego took a moment to watch Trixie disappear into some brush before approaching the base of the tree. He reached up and dug his claws into the trunk, testing how much weight it could hold. Satisfied that it would support his body-weight, Diego clawed his way up the tree until he reached some branches thick enough that he could stand on. He nodded to Garret, "Let's go."

Diego would follow behind Garret, using his cat-like reflexes to silently maneuver from tree to tree. As they traveled, the Fanalis kept an eye out for any patrols, prepared to quickly put them down with a volley of arrows if need be. Of course, depending on Trixie's proximity, he wouldn't have to.

With Trixie's speed, it wouldn't be long before she reached the stronghold. She would quickly scout the perimeter, using the surrounding cover to remain out of sight as she did so. Once she got an idea of the forces placed around the outer-edge of the compound, the tigress fell back to report her findings to Diego and the stranger. On the way back, however, she came across a small patrol of a few swordsman and an archer.

"What do we have here? A spider riding a tiger? And a beautiful tiger at that."

Trixie froze in place, turning to face the man speaking. She remembered Diego's orders not to engage the enemy, but she had been uncharacteristically spotted in her reconnaissance. If she ran off now, there was a possibility that the patrol would raise an alarm. That would endanger the mission, a failure she did not want on her hands. Growling, Trixie made up her mind and charged towards the Black Crow Swordsman.

Seeing that the tiger meant to fight, the swordsman unsheathed their blades while the archer fired an aimed shot at her. The tiger was faster than the archer expected and the arrow missed its target, but still managed to lodge itself in her rump, a hair shy of Zanzibar's face. The spider let out a squee and fired a Ball O' Web from it's spinneret, aimed at the archer. The webbed ball hit the archer in the face and knocked him off his feet.

Trixie pounced on the nearest swordsman, mangling the man with her claws as she took him down with her forward momentum. A spray of blood shot into the air as a chuck of flesh was ripped out of his chest. As soon as the man hit the ground, Trixie was on to the next two swordsman, taking them out with a flurry of fangs and claws. In a matter of seconds, the patrol was dead and Trixie was able to continue on back to Diego.

Garret watched from above as the Fanalis boy was interacting with the beasts. He couldn't tell how the child was relaying information, but supposed that was what it was like to be a beast tamer. Going back to his own tasks as Diego joined him, Garret jumped from treetop to treetop. He was careful, maneuvering his body through the lush green canopy. It required nimble movements, but he aimed to land on thicker branches. Furthermore, when he landed, he did so as close to the central part of the tree as possible in order to minimize rustling.

With this their pace was slightly slow, though it wasn't likely they would be moving much faster if they were on guard. Extra care would have to be taken when approaching the stronghold, regardless of their means of approach. Garret confirmed the younger companion's position, as he had been doing his best to simultaneously track Diego's progress across the tree tops. As expected of someone of his race... No issues keeping up. As this thought crossed his mind, Garret caught movement from the corner of his eye and froze in place. Slowly he lowered himself down on the branch, keeping himself from sight as best he could.

It was then that he saw a patrol heading their way. Knowing the birds indigenous to this forest, as he had spent some time with Marinus hunting hostile creatures here, Garret imitated their call twice. It was the signal to Diego for approaching enemies.

He watched through the openings of leaves as the men approached. With his current vantage point, he couldn't really see how many were with them, though he could see the movement through the cover. Before long, the group passed beneath him quietly, and Garret was able to get a proper head count. Hmmm. Three swordsmen and an archer. It would be wiser to remove the archer first and clear out the other three from a range... I have just the thing for that. Garret narrowed his focus to his immediate surroundings, and the sight of his enemies. He no longer knew where Diego was, exactly. The magician prepared the throwing weapons Vaer.

Once the four patrolmen advanced past his branch, Garret finished matching his breathing to their steps. Aiming for the archer in the back, he immediately threw one of his daggers, aiming for a critical blow to the man's heart. The angle of the attack bypassed the rib cage and entered from above while Garret simultaneously gave out another bird call in an attempt to override the sound that would have otherwise been made.

This was only effective for the first few moments, until the man would crumple to the ground; the noise would not be cover-able. Garret brought out a total of two more throwing needles, preparing to throw them at two of the soldiers. He hoped that Diego would be somewhere nearby to pick off one or two himself, and released the two towards two of the swordsmen below.

Diego's ears twitched, picking up the sound of a bird-call nearby. 'That's the signal.' The Fanatiga stopped and crouched down, carefully looking every which way until he spotted the patrol that Garret had seen. In the time it took Diego to prepare an arrow to his bow, the enigmatic swordsman had dealt a fatal blow to one of the Black Crows. The Fanalis Hunter fired off two arrows in rapid succession, both shots sailing through the air into the heart of a bandit.

After Garret finished off the last bandit remaining, Diego resumed leaping from branch to branch towards the stronghold. Along the way, he came across Zanzibar and Trixie, who had an arrow sticking out of her butt. In as quiet of a voice as he could muster, Diego called down to her. "Are you alright?"

When Trixie heard the sound of Diego's voice she looked up to find him in the trees. "I'm fine. We just ran into a patrol." She gave him a brief description of the layout of the stronghold and the positions of the guards.

Diego quickly communicated that information to Garret, keeping the volume of his voice low, in case there were more patrols around. "We should attack from two fronts, similar to before. I'll create a distraction from the south gate, which should allow you to slip in behind them." Assuming the mysterious spellsword, whose magical talents were still unknown to Diego, agreed to the plan, then the young Fanalis and his beasts would part ways with the man to get in position.

The forest broke off about twenty meters away from the stronghold's southern wall, granting Diego perfect cover from which to scout out the fortifications. There were several archers that were in sight between the crenels of the parapets, four of which he was able to pick off with carefully aimed arrows before the alarm was raised. After each shot, Diego had moved to a different spot along the tree line to confuse the enemy. Now that more archers began appearing on the wall, he grabbed an explosive arrow and nocked it to the bowstring. Inhaling, he aimed it at his target, the gate, then exhaled, releasing the arrow. Bodda-Boom! The resulting explosion reduced the gate to nothing more than shards of wooden shrapnel that were sent out in every direction.

"Now!" Diego shouted down to Trixie. Without hesitation, the electric tigress took off into the Stronghold. Switching his position again, Diego focused back on the archers atop the wall, only pausing long enough to aim, fire a shot, and then move again.

Meanwhile, Trixie didn't make it very far into the stronghold before being greeted by two swordsmen and a knight. Before they could circle around her, the tigress charged towards the closest swordsman and slashed at his chest with Lightning Fury. On contact with her claws, bio-electricity was discharged outward, hitting all three men. While the Knight was able to shield his vital parts from the blast, the two swordsman weren't so lucky. In retaliation, the Knight swung his Knight Blade at Trixie's back, which she deflected with her Iron Tiger Claw. The Knight's blade slammed into the ground, a few feet from her right side. Going in for the kill, Trixie roared, mouth stretching open wide as electricity danced around her muzzle. A moment later, an arc of bio-electricity fired from her mouth like a Lightning Cannon, leaving a gaping hole in the man's chest.

Diego grimaced as he came up behind Trixie and saw the carnage she had left behind. Looking away from the lumps of blackened flesh, Diego contemplated going deeper into the Black Crow's lair, when he heard the pained cry of an animal. The cries turned into wails of terror, tugging at Diego's heartstrings. He didn't even have to look at his beasts to know they felt the same way. Without a word, the Fanalis and his beasts followed the cries to a long building.

Two guards looked up at the sound of the door opening, startled by the sight of a tiger, followed by a tiger-man wielding a bow. Before they could get up, Diego fired off four arrows using a vector trick.  The arrows bounced off the walls before hitting their targets, two hitting one of the guards, while the other two hit the other.

While Trixie walked over to make sure the two guards were dead, Diego looked behind the door they had been guarding. He discovered a long corridor with cells on either side. A sour smell permeated the air, a combination of bodily fluids and waste. At the far end of the room, he saw a Knight looking into a cell. Light flashed from the cell and Diego could hear a cackle of laughter.

Trixie scooted around Diego and with an incredible burst of speed, ran towards the Knight, tackling him in a pounce. The Fanalis followed after her, watching as she tore into the Knight's throat with her fangs and dug her claws into his chest. The Knight was able to shield Trixie's blows with his shield, but he couldn't get her to release her hold on his throat. He attempted to scream, but the only sound that came out was the gargle of blood.

Suddenly, Trixie was thrown into the air and slammed against the cage of the cell opposite the one the Knight had been peering into. Diego's eyes went wide and he tried to run faster, preparing another arrow. A man stepped out of the cell with his staff pointed towards Trixie. Before the man could take another step, Diego sent a Bonecrusher Arrow his way, which struck the man in the head. Brain matter splattered around the room as Diego rushed to Trixie and Zanzibar's side. "Are you ok?"

Seeing that they were fine, Diego stood up and looked into the cell the Black Crow Aide had come from. Huddled to one corner was a strange serpentine creature. What looked like fluffy, white clouds adorned its back, though they were currently stained red. To one side of the cell, Diego saw a whip lying on the ground. Putting two and two together, Diego gathered that the men were torturing the beast, probably to sell for fighting; just like they had attempted to do with Trixie.

Speaking softly, the Fanalis slowly approached the Dragon, placing his weapons on the ground. "Hey fella. It's okay now. I won't hurt you. My name is Diego" With the power of his Wildman's Charm, Diego's words reached the Cloud Dragon in a way it could comprehend.

At first, the Cloud Dragon stared at Diego fearfully, especially after watching a man's head explode. Once it saw Diego's concern for his beasts and that the strange, tiger-man shrugged off his weapons, the dragon calmed down a bit. "You...take....me....freedom?"

Diego nodded, "Yes, I'll take you out of here." A white blur shot out from behind the Fanalis as Zanzibar buried himself in the pillowy fluffs along the Dragon's back. While the furry, white spider cuddled the cloud dragon, Diego grabbed the Whip of Thunder and tucked it into his sack.

Outside, Diego searched for the mysterious swordsman, trailed by Trixie, Zanzibar, and the strange new addition to his little family.

Garret watched once more as Diego spoke to his beast; again the beast tamer somehow understood the creature on a fundamental level. Shaking his head, Garret awaited Diego's report. The child caught on quick, and suggested a two-front pincer attack. If they were simple soldiers, the plan would have been the height of folly and stupidity. Diego and Garret were anything but simple, however.

Moving quickly, the magician made his way to the opposite side of the fortification. He waited for a few moments, and then heard an explosion shortly after. The guards atop the parapets shouted and immediately headed towards the direction of the commotion. A perfect distraction... Garret dug beneath his cloak and grasped at a tool that he was fond of using; the Grappling Hook. Swinging it above his head, Garret launched the object into the air and allowed it to hook onto the edge of the wooden wall. Grinning, he tugged upon it to ensure it was well in place before trusting it with his full weight.

He scaled the wall with a practiced ease, though it was not quite as skillful as Yua's ability to do so. When he reached the top, he immediately dropped the ground. It seemed as if the Fanalis boy was making his way into one of the two large buildings. The remnants of dead bandits littered the ground. He entered that location... So I suppose all that leaves me is this one... The magician heard noises from within the building. It seemed as if a man in charge of the forces was getting soldiers together in order to purge the intruders. ... What a pain. I don't want to deal with that again... The man recalled his prior fight from the group of enemies creating and executing a strange formation. It had made it difficult for the magician to fight against them.

Wasting no time, Garret pulled out his Exuro Staff and aimed it at the building's window. He whispered his spell Ice Explosion, which formed and immediately broke through the window before exploding and killing the gathering of soldiers and the Bandit General on the floor. The building was in shambles, but Garret did not stop there. Charging the staff with magoi, Garret called upon its power over Heat. A Heat Serpent formed from the tip of the staff and rushed into the building. Those who had managed to avoid the shrapnel from the ball of ice would now find themselves engulfed in flames, and the building itself was no different. It collapsed, killing the rest of those who were within the building.

Nodding to himself in satisfaction, Garret cast another spell; Realm of Greater Invisibility. With his Magic Carpet the magician immediately took flight, leaving the Fanalis to finish cleaning up the grunts from the building he had entered.

The first thing Diego noticed was a thick cloud of smoke that filled the air. Through the smoke, he could see the flicker of flames from another building in the stronghold. Immediately concerned for the mysterious swordsman, Diego ordered Trixie and Zanzibar to split up and search for the man, while he tried to survey the burning building. He didn't imagine that Garret would have been caught in the blaze, but it was a worry all the same. Even though he didn't really know the man, Diego had a kind heart and believed in supporting your allies.

The heat from the fire was unbearable, preventing Diego from getting too close. As he circled the building, peering through any openings to see if Garret was inside, the roof collapsed. An explosion of heat propelled debris and embers outward, some of which struck Diego. He quickly dropped and rolled to prevent himself from catching on fire and made his way out of the stronghold. Trixie and Zanziber were close behind, reporting that they hadn't seen any sign of Garret.

Diego hoped the man had just left him behind, though the abandonment would be awfully rude, at least the man would be okay. Diego put the stronghold and the Black Crows behind him and moved on with his life.
