Odd Job; it is a phrase that has meant a lot of different things to different people. For example, for a lot of children out there, "Odd jobs" means what people do to earn a bit of money from their parents - going to the market for them, or perhaps helping with dealing with the family pet's training.
For others, odd jobs are jobs that aren't exactly pleasant but you have to do anyway, like helping to protect a slave caravan or having to interact for a good few hours at a time with a nationalist who won't stop talking about how terrible your country is and how you should be ashamed of yourself for not being pushed out of someone's vagina in the right part of the world.
However, in Jian's book, that title had well and truly been shifted to "jobs that make you question whether someone out there in the wide world is taking the piss." In the case of the job that he had just gotten, it seemed that it was fitting well and truly into the third category, and Jian was honestly still a little shocked at the fact that he was actually willing to take it.

A couple of weeks ago, a successful tycoon who worked in one of Reim's major cities had sent out a few men to carry some cargo to another city for trading purposes. That cargo had gone missing, and people had only recently found out exactly who had taken it.
Now, that might have seemed like a pretty normal situation, especially considering that when countries are in crises like the one they were currently in with Kou, people were a lot more likely to break the law. However, it wasn't so much what had happened but who had been the ones to take it that was fucking bizarre.
According to scouts in the area, the cargo had been taken by... nine-foot tall, heavily muscled, fire-breathing gorillas. Yeah, to be completely honest, Jian had not thought the person who was trying to buy his services had been serious the first time that he had heard about the concept. He was being asked to go out there, wage into their nest and steal cargo back from what was essentially an oversized monkey? It wasn't exactly a job for an assassin now was it?
However, the explanation for why he was being hired actually made more sense than he would have given it credit for. Mercenaries had no concept of stealth whatsoever, they would just go head first into the territory and would wind up getting pounced on by the entire Band of Gorillas, and would wind up dying horribly. As such, they wanted someone who'd be able to avoid detection by all but a select few who were guarding the cargo itself.
That being said, from the information he'd been given by the scouts, the gorillas were apparently on heat and that meant that they were going to be far more aggressive than usual, protecting their area and their mates from any potential usurpers. So, were something to go wrong, Jian'd be trapped inside an area of infuriated, and probably horny, giant monkeys. So, he was going to need a bit of muscle for this particular job.
His first thought had been that Fanalis girl, Ayero, but she seemed to be busy with other things. So, he had sat and thought long hard about who else he could have help him on such a weird job. Then he remembered someone he'd already worked with, someone who was just as strong as Ayero and seemed to be okay with doing stupid missions like this.
That was why, as he leapt from tree to tree, he was being flanked by Jahanigar.
