Ayero couldn’t deny that she felt a bit uneasy seeing people in Kou attire on the open streets. Not that she had an inherent distaste for the people of eastern nation, but the looks they were being given by some of Reim’s more patriotic citizens were rather unnerving. The majority of Reim didn’t take too well to the invasion, and honestly she was on their side. It was never a pleasant experience to have one’s home occupied by a foreign country. But it was still too early to determine how Kou rule would shape the empire, and as such the Fanalis woman reserved her final judgment for the time being.

Things are surprisingly quiet. Humming softly to herself, the red headed woman stops in front of a booth selling fresh fruit. While she eyes her potential snack, the older woman running the booth offers her a smile and a greeting upon seeing that she was not in Kou attire. After politely smiling in response, the black snake wrapped around Ayero’s body begins to stir. The noises from a ruckus further down the road tickle her ears, and she turns to see what appeared to be an angry mob in the distance. Putting the apple she was holding back down with the others, the woman narrows her gaze and moves to approach the gathering.

Pushing her way to the front of the crowd, Ayero is surprised to see what appears to be Reim warriors harassing people dressed in Kou clothing, women and children among them. While the Fanalis did not approve of Kou’s militaristic involvement in her home country, harassing innocent civilians was unacceptable. Her mind briefly flutters to the Azix, the Kou magician she had helped fell several beasts with a short while ago. Initially distrustful of him, she eventually came to realize that his country of origin did not define what type of person he was. He also proved to be rather genuine, somehow able to revive her from the brink of death. With this in mind, she steps forward.

”Is there a problem here?”

Her voice cuts clean through the air as she crosses her arms over her chest while taking a slightly widened stance. She was aware that her actions would be looked down upon by some, but she wasn’t about to walk away from such a blatant display of harassment, Kou or not.

”I ask you to leave these people in peace.”

Jian had noticed a lot of people giving him dirty looks since he'd come to this country. He'd been here a long time ago and people had reacted a lot kinder towards him. That had clearly changed since the last time he had been here, and he couldn't help but wonder if it had something to do with the fact that his Emperor had been interfering with this country's politics, shoving his thumb into the already broken pie crust if you will.

It left a bad taste in his mouth that this was happening, but he had nothing to do with it so there was nothing that he could do to change things, so he just had to tolerate it.

However, there was one thing that he didn't have to tolerate, and that was people's abuse of his countrymen. Walking down the street in a quiet little village, he was surprised to hear angry yelling from a group of men, and as he approached their location he couldn't help but notice that they were abusing a group of civilians dressed in the clothing of Kou. Great, Jian thought bitterly, yet more racists. There sure is an abundant amount of these morons everywhere I go nowadays, eh?

A ginger girl stepped out in front of the men, telling them to stop abusing these people. Judging by her facial features, he made the guess that she was a Fanalis, a race that he'd only ever seen in high concentrations in this country.

Maybe it was something to do with that army brigade that he'd heard legends about... it was a shame what happened to them, he thought, but if these people were going to be a threat then she could take care of it, right? Fanalis had a stupid level of physical strength.

Well, he'd thought so, but as one of them ignored her and continued terrorizing their poor victims, Jian acted without a moments hesitation. As the man reached for his weapon, a fan found its way cutting through the morning air, a slight hum eminating from it as it sliced through the air... and, most importantly, through the man's wrist, severing his Ulnar artery, letting out a wail of pain.

"Sorry to interrupt," Jian added, his voice seemingly devoid of any intonation ",but you seem to be bothering a few of my countrymen. If you're looking for someone to take your frustrations out on, why not someone who can fight back, eh? More fun that way, no?"

The snake-like smile on his face was the only indication of any sort of emotion - he seemed weirdly happy about this situation, a sadistic aura coming from him that was unable to be ignored.

”Hnng?!” One of the men turned around to face the newcomer, retaining his grasp on a young woman while a child clung to her robes. A look of surprise then anger flashed onto the soldier’s face at the Fanalis woman’s interference. ”YOU of all people should be angry at them.” He spits out, glaring at the half-Fanalis. ”These bastards invaded our country and slaughtered the Fanalis Corps!” He tightens his grips on the woman and shakes her for emphasis, causing her to cry out in pain.

Gritting her teeth, Ayero places another foot forward. This situation wasn’t as black and white as some bandits harassing people or vicious animals causing trouble. She didn’t like Kou’s presence in her country, but as long as these immigrants didn’t cause trouble she felt as if they should be left in peace. But she didn’t live in this village, she didn’t know how the sudden influx of Kou citizens had affected daily life here. Still, she hoped she’d be able to solve this peacefully but it didn’t look like the soldiers were about to let up. ”I know. I am unhappy as well, but these people are only civilians. I don’t think that they should be here, but at the same time you’ve no right to assault them for what their country did so long as they interact peacefully.” She catches the gaze of the young Kou woman, her eyes pleading in desperate to the Fanalis.

A sudden cry of pain rang through the air, both Ayero and the man she’d been arguing with pausing in their “conversation” just in time to witness a young man in Kou clothing wielding a fan. One of the Reim soldiers was holding his wrist, cringing in pain as blood ran freely down his arm. A sudden flare of anger rises in Ayero’s eyes, irritated at the intervention. Though she would rather have everyone walk away unharmed, she had to admit that things didn’t seem to be going in that direction.

The man who had snapped at her turned back toward the red head. ”See?! Now they’re attacking us!” he bellowed, garnering angry shouts from the gathered crowd. ”Taking our capital wasn’t enough for them, now they’re attacking Reim citizens at whim!” His words caused Ayer to cringe, and she realizes that there’s no way this would be able to get called off using non-violence. Turning his attention back to his captive, the man unsheathes his sword and holds the blade to her neck. She trembles in his grasp, the child fisting her robes crying out in fear for his mother’s life.

”Enough!” Ayero barked, wary of how the situation had escalated since Jian’s arrival. She grasps the man by his shoulder in an attempt to pull him firmly away from the Kou woman. Seemingly having enough of the Fanalis, the Reim soldier growls and releases the Kou woman before turning quickly on his feet and bringing his sword down on the intervening woman. Not having enough time to pull back and dodge the longsword, Ayero raises her arms In front of her face using a Simple Block. The metal of the sword meets the gauntlets on her arms, effectively leaving the Fanalis-Human unscathed. Exhaling sharply, her hand twitches near her left hip before thinking better of unsheathing her own sword. Enraged, the Radicalist Captain moves in to make another strike but a knee meets his gut before he’s able to swing his weapon once more. The man crumples to the ground, unprepared to take a Fanalis-grade leg to the stomach.

Glancing over at Jian, she sighs in frustration. Try not to kill anyone, Kou dog.”

Okay, Jian was actually finding it kinda hard not to laugh at this point. This guy had beaten these people bloody and yet Jian was the bad guy for not letting them get away with their bullshit?

He could feel the animosity from almost everyone in the area, and a lesser man might have taken that as a sign that it was perhaps a good time to leave, or would at least have felt somewhat bad about their actions. Jian, thankfully, wasn't a normal person.

"Oh, yes, so everyone from Kou is to blame for what some of us do? Tell me; are you a gladiator, boy? Did you fight upon the fields of the western front against Heliohapt? How can you not be to blame for your country's mistakes if these are to blame for the emperor's misdeeds?" he said, striking a chord with a few of the members of the crowd, stunning some of them into silence.

Unfortunately, the adrenaline and built up animosity meant that many of them just disregarded everything that he was saying, imagining that anything that came from a man from Kou wouldn't be worth listening to.

Moving into a better position for an all-out fight with the perpetrators of the attack, Jian found himself working alongside that ginger earlier. He was about to thank her for assisting his countrymen before she said something that made him have a strong urge to punch her across the face. Kou dog?!

He actually did laugh at that point, the sheer stupidity of this situation impossible not to get at least a small kick out of. He was fighting with a racist against racists. What the fuck did he do in a past life to deserve this?

"Me so sowwy, pwetty wady. Me just stupid Kou dog, me no know what me do." Jian, working with the ammunition she'd given him, put on the mos stereotypical Kou accent, to the point it actually seemed to irk a few of the people from Kou.

However, he cleared his throat afterwards, trying to get back on a more serious track. "You think you Fanalis would understand the plight of a people being persecuted for something they're not responsible for, you hypocrite. If you saw your people being abused, you'd step in too. These kinds of people can't be reasoned with; their bigotry makes them illogical."

As a low-ranked swordsman charged him, blade at the ready, Jian realized that perhaps now was not the most intelligent time for a verbose debate. Instead, he simply decided to put his all into this. Running forward for a second before using the cobbled street like a spring, he span through the air in a 720' arc, before dropping and rolling next to his collapsed fan. Slipping his foot under it and kicking it into his hand, he was ready to go on the offensive.

Parry a sword blow with one fan, use the other to hit them around the head, parry, slicing their face and stepping out of the way of the third blow, letting the attacker falter for a second before kicking their leg out from underneath them, collapsing on top of the one currently clutching his face.

Something that was quite hard to ignore about the fight.. whilst it was clear he was having to put a lot of effort into it even with restraining himself from killing someone, it was weirdly fluid. Where the Reim fight style seemed brutal and efficient, every movement of his seemed like an intricate dance - the radicalists were his partners, every blow led to a parry or a move backwards before slipping around and advancing upon them; to be sure, it was a deadly foxtrot.

"Since you asked, Fanalis-girl, I'll not kill these fools, but you really are a hypocrite."

Ayero quirked a brow at the strange Kou man’s words, a bit surprised at how sensitive he was at her remark. What did he honestly expect? For a proud empire with a lengthy history and a rich culture to welcome the people of an invading country with open arms? A flash of fury rises in her eyes when he compares the enslavement of her people to their current situation. Pushing down her anger she ignores his taunts for the time being, instead directing her focus on trying to subdue the aggressive soldiers.

”I understand your anger and frustration. But these people are not soldiers. I ask that you put down your weapons.” She struggles to do damage control for Jian’s words, the crowd clearly not pleased at being talked down to by a man from Kou regardless of his points. It seemed to Ayero that he didn’t quite grasp the feelings of the invaded people, but in the least he had agreed not to kill the irate soldiers. Turning her back to the fan wielder, she leaves the approaching soldiers to him and faces the remaining captain and gives one last attempt to talk them out of violence.

”Please, captain. Call your men off and let these people go in peace.” Her words are pleading but her voice is far too commanding for the captain’s liking, not that what she said would have changed his mind anyway.

”What good would that do!? Our village can’t sustain these leeches much longer! Let them live in the city, or better yet send them back to their own country! We should not have to play host to an invading people!” Brandishing his sword at her, the captain gives her a threatening look while some of the onlookers shout in approval. Staring down the man and his weapon, there is stillness from both warriors for several long moments before a soldier behind the captain smacks a woman upside the head as she tries to use the distraction Ayero and Jian were creating to get away. Instinct took over and Ayero lurches forward toward the assaulting soldier, only to have her path blocked by the captain.

Pointing his weapon at the Fanalis, the captain lets out an angry cry before swinging his Longsword at her rapidly, his movements forming a Dicing motion. Ayero’s sword hand twitches again, her reflexes telling her to reach for her own blade but she’d make the situation that much worse if she pulled out a weapon of her own and began slicing at the soldiers. But her hesitation costs her, a single strike cutting along her shoulder imparting C-tier damage before she’s able to side-step the following blow. Fighting the urge to leave a fist shaped dent in the man’s skull, the woman focuses on finding any openings the captain may have.

Seeing his left side unguarded, she aims a kick at the open torso only for her leg to meet the captain’s blade, quickly blocking the halfling’s attack with his Riposte defensive ability. The steel sword clanks against the metal of her shin guards and she draws her leg back, narrowly dodging another swipe from the captain.

From his perch on her shoulders, the large black snake watches the battle with a discerning gaze. He could tell that his master was conflicted from how unwilling she seemed to fight these men, seeing how usually her blade was the first thing to be drawn. Deciding to help, Kabu glides gracefully from her body in a lunge, Constricting his heavy body tightly around the captain’s sword arm. He emits a low hiss while the captain looks on in shock, the feeling leaving his arm and replaced shortly with a tingling numbness. Releasing his hold on the man, Kabu slithers back around the Fanalis woman’s body in time for her to catch an opening as the man’s paralyzed arm drops to his side. A fist to the man’s gut sends him toppling over, slumping to the ground from the pain of being assaulted with a Fanalis fist.

”Y-you…helping them like this…nothing but a…a traitor…” The defeated man begins to cough violently, blood spattering onto his hands and across the ground. He looks up at her through the discomfort with a hate filled gaze, eyes reflecting his belief that he considered her to be as bad as Kou scum. Not wanting to stare into those eyes any longer, she turns her attention back toward Jian to see how he was faring. Sensing her unease, Kabu hacks a dose of Healing Touch saliva over the wound on her arm. The menthol-like sensation of the spit and the gentle sizzling of the wound as it began to heal did little to soothe her nerves.

Not having paid attention to the argument between the girl and the captain other than to keep track of the man's position in regards to everything else, so as to avoid being sneaked up on, Jian instead readied himself with the larger job; continuing to take out the lesser soldiers.

The only issue with that was that he was having to keep track of four people at once. The ones on the ground had appeared not to stir, so it was only the ones he'd not touched yet.

Unfortunately, as he danced around their blows, he found that it was impossible to keep moving and keep track of all four. He could keep track of three at once, and even that was often pushing it.

Every time he moved, one got behind him and struck at a weak spot. Most times they were glancing wounds, but enough glancing wounds add up.

His shirt was cut as a strike hit him in the back, he had small streams of blood dripping down his right arm and left leg, and the more he got injured the more difficult it was to keep up his fighting style. Moving on his left leg was stinging like fuck at this point.

Well, perhaps it was time to do that. He just hoped it wouldn't shock Fanalis girl too much. After all, this was kind of his ace in the hole when he had to do fights like this where he was so outnumbered.

"Oi, Fanalis!" Jian called out as the four men began to encircle him, their blood-soaked swords raised. "I'd recommend getting the wounded and moving back. This is gonna hurt."

A simple flick of the wrist, and a small red ball was in the Kou-man's hand, before throwing it down on the ground resulting in a relatively loud blast.

A plume of acrid black smoke arose from where the capsule had been thrown, covering a good three meters radius around the epicentre. To those stuck in the smoke, their eyes were assaulted with the equivalent of pepper spray. At least, those who didn't already know about the results of the capsule. Jian, for example, had closed his eyes before it had exploded, and was instead using their cries of pain to locate them.

It was nowhere near as precise, but over the course of the smoke, Jian managed to take out the other four men. He honesty wasn't sure how many blows he had to use on them, he was pretty sure most of them were glancing blows with his shitty human ears, but it was enough.

Finally, after a minute, Jian simply walked out of the cloud, clearly somewhat badly injured and bleeding, but with a crude and genuine smile, even with his red, inflamed eyes.

"Know a good doctor, Fanalis? I could really use with one, and I think so could our friends."

Her ears catch Jian’s voice just as she turns, slightly startled when the young man calls out to her. Heart still pumping rapidly from the adrenaline of battle, the Fanalis only reacts to his words. Gathering the wounded soldiers by their arms and legs, the woman hoists them onto her back and sprints several meters away. The bang from the smoke ball reaches her ears as she props the injured men against the side of a house, turning in time to see the thick black smoke and civilians crying in surprise as they run for cover.

She raises a brow in surprise as the Kou man emerges from the smog, looking to be in pain but still holding himself up. After he speaks to her, the snake hisses in warning from his perch on her shoulder, wary that the man might be sneaky and try something. Rolling her eyes at Kabu’s antics, Ayero doesn’t scold the serpent but rather places a hand on his head to calm him.

”Speaking honestly, I’m not sure if the local doctor would be willing to treat you.” She strokes the black scales on Kabu’s head while glancing over the man’s wounds. She didn’t know if this village had a life mage or a medicine man, or even if said provider would be more interested in protecting their country’s integrity rather than healing the wounded regardless of nationality. ”We can try.” She shrugs, hefting the injured into her arms with a grunt.
