Arik had been meaning to take a trip for quite some time. He still had a couple months before his exam, and he was free to come and go still as long as he went through the proper channels. In fact, a couple of his instructors encouraged a good journey as a way to build up physical and mental fortitude, and were more than happy to point him to the proper paperwork to get this trip approved.

Arik took plenty of time to prepare before his trip began, however. He'd started packing two days prior, gathering food and maps and waterskins and the like. Everything was arranged in two bags, which were currently open on his bed next to his staff. "Food. Water. Compass. Map. Rope. Fish hooks. Fishing line. Twine. Candles. Flint." He continued to name off items, pulling them out of the bags as he called them out before placing them back within. Two minutes later, he was satisfied with his preparations and slung the two bags across his shoulders so that the straps formed an X-shape across his front and back. The weight was heavy, but distributed evenly enough that Arik could walk without undue impairment.

The plan was to join a caravan and travel with people who knew the route from Magnostadt Academy proper to the coast, and from there to gain passage on a ship to Balbadd. The trip itself shouldn't take long; a week or so. The caravan would be leaving shortly; Arik made sure his room was in proper order, picked up his staff, and headed out towards the gates of the city.

The trip to the coast proceeded without much incident. It wasn't exactly the most dangerous walk. Between the city and the ocean was a lot of foot traffic, almost constantly during the day. Arik and his group fit right in, as they should. A couple other wizards were coming and going on various bits of business or journeys like Arik's own. The water was a wonderful way to travel. The port was almost as bustling as Magnostadt, minus the abundance of Magic Tools that the academy city itself had going 24/7.

From the port, Arik boarded a ship. She was a Reim ship, stopping near Magnostadt to resupply before she took her cargo to Balbadd. From what Arik understood, she was carrying machines that had been ordered by various citizens of Balbadd to make everyday tasks easier. Things that aided in the grinding of grain, the weaving of thread into cloth, that kind of thing. What impressed Arik was that none of these were magic tools, which fulfilled that purpose in Magnostadt. They worked on manual input alone, and yet did their assigned task with almost magical ease. One of the wheat grinders was broken, and Arik spent most of the journey puzzling out its workings. Every piece served an obvious purpose apart from the others, but yet they all worked together at once. using half the energy to do all the steps at once that it took a normal person to do them one by one.

Arik's investigation of what the Reim traders called "machines" was cut short by the sighting of a port ahead. The flag named it out as the city of Balbadd itself. Arik rushed to the front of the ship, leaning over the railing to get a good look. "So this is what a goi nation's capitol looks like," he muttered to himself. It was bustling, even from this distance. He couldn't tell what everyone was about, but everyone was doing something. That much, then, was the same.
